more there we go today's game is also 45 unical 76 go with the spirit the spirit of 76 and buy United Airlines the official airline of the San Francisco Giants and now joins T fizzy on wrong fairly in Twain Piper Knicks right here on channel 2 from Dodger Stadium it is Game three of the series between the Dodgers and the Giants the Dodgers have won the first two games and today it will be Orel Hershiser a 16 game winner going against Kelly downs going after win number 12 hello everybody I'm Ron fairly long with Dwayne Kuiper's Steve physique will be with us in just a second and Dwayne this ballgame very very important for the San Francisco Giants of good good pitching matchup today well let's look at it as far as what the opposition has done against both of these pitchers against Orel Hershiser opposition is hitting 227 against Kelly downs only 217 so I guess the bottom line is as both of these guys right-handers are very tough but I guess you can throw that out the window it's the Dodgers in the giant and it's always gonna be a good game it was a good game last night and one of the principles in the game last night Mike Krukow he pitched an outstanding game let's go down to Steve fizzy ack and that conversation rod I'm here with last night starting pitcher Mike Krukow five and two thirds innings and one run allowed and the big question today is how do you feel well I feel real good you know I was so excited to get into a big league game last night had been a long time I sort of been backing up to the paycheck window here the last few weeks and last time last night was a chance to get back with a big league game and help the team out and I was pumped so today I'm sort of euphoric still I'm got a little gentleman going and I'm not too stiff I would know if I would have any unusual stiffness but I'm fine I'm over the hump like Doc Campbell said he said it's gonna come slowly you have to be patient with it and I have been enough thanks Tom over the hump now and everything's fine very quickly the most important question why'd the gum on top of the hat well I can't talk and chew gum at the same time and I don't want to waste it it's just too good I just got it broken in alright Mike Krukow he'll be set to going about four or five days let's we'll be back with the starting lineups and play-by-play action with Dwayne Kuiper and Ron fairly after this it's year-end clearance time at your Toyota dealers and we've got to sell thousands of 88 models to make room for the new 89 this is your last chance to get the 4runner pickup or van of your choice at 88 prices so don't wait see your Northern California Toyota dealer today you know gals first again with three unleaded gasoline the best gasolines for cleaning fuel injectors introducing the new performance series choose new unleaded plus eighty seven proven performance plus eighty nine or high performance 92 seventy-six well let's know what do you be what's new [Music] welcome back to Dodger Stadium as we get ready for Game three of this series the Giants come into this afternoon's ball game four and a half games behind the Dodgers they have dropped the last two the opening two games of this series the men in blue today Charlie Williams will be behind the plate Joe West at first base Tom Hallion at second and I'm firing a third will be Paul Runge it is a beautiful day here at Dodger Stadium temperatures perfect for that of the game of baseball but just to touch on the Giants a little bit on this current road trip they have a record of four and five and since the all-star break they have not been playing that well they have 115 of 31 games and against the Dodgers this year as they take the field a three and seven mark the Dodgers have won the last two and four of the last six and so the Giants need a victory here this afternoon let's run down the starting lineups as we look into the Giants dugout let's take a look at the starting lineups today Brett Butler will leadoff and play in centerfield Robbie Thompson at second base will Clark at first base at third base will be I take that back at and left field will be Kevin Mitchell at first base my Calgary doing the catching will be Melvin at third base will be Matt Williams that shortstop Hosea rebei and on the mound the pitcher Kelly downs defensively Guerrero at first base Saxon second Griffin at shortstop Woodson playing third base Danny Heep out of left field with Kirk Gibson given the afternoon off Shelby and center Marshall in right field and Mike Scioscia behind the plate doing the catching and on the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers is Orel Hershiser 16 victories this year he is 16 and 6 he is tied with Maddux of Chicago for the most wins in the National League and he is ninth Andy RA at 2.85 so the Giants are going to have their hands full this afternoon they need a victory here and Roger said prior to the game he'd like to come out of here with a split which means the Giants have to win the next two games well we're about set and ready to go as you take a look once more time at Orel Hershiser and Tim Leary and Belcher the starting big 3 I guess you could say with Valenzuela down right now and Boyle boy they're basically winning two out of three as the others are a little bit under the 500 mark but right then right there you can see the big thing for the Dodgers their starting rotation and they have come up with a lot of victories Hershiser very very tough to beat there's any question about that however in his last three or four outings he has been struggling not necessarily in in getting wins as it is he has been a little bit off with his command as they have gone to a four-man rotation here in Los Angeles Hershiser his last outing although he went 9 innings against the Cincinnati Reds and won the ballgame he did not have his good stuff and so that'll be something that we'll have to follow here this afternoon we're ready to get this underway had to lead things off here's Dwayne Kuiper well thanks Ron fairly it'll be Brett Butler leading off for the Giants Butler coming in at 286 for homeruns and 35 RBIs Butler last night run hitless he was hold for three he did score run whether leads the National League with 86 run scored and also leads the National League with 74 walks and his second in on-base percentage Butler with 13 bunt hits in this 88 season and as he steps into the batter's box the first time in this four-game series as butter lines went down the right-field line and that's gonna fall he runs first he digs in a second and Catalina doubled from Nevada Brett Butler [Applause] first time in this series that Butler has been able to get on his first time up as you well know if you've been following Butler leads National League in several different categories and right here the Giants with an opportunity get on the scoreboard first for the first time Butler swinging at the first pitch of this game he is on second the hitter Robbie Thompson Thompson try we'll try to get Butler over to third he squares around the bunt and bunts it hard foul down the first base line [Music] [Applause] see the numbers for Robbie Thompson Robbie last night was one four five see if Robbie will take a shot at trying to hit the ball to the right side now he's bunting and he takes that ball down and away one and one looks to me like Roger Craig really feels like this is going to be a pitcher's duel and he's going to try to get the lead early you know when you have to quality pitchers on the mound like today when you have downs and Hershiser you know one run here one run there can mean a great deal and Roger understanding that he'd like to see his team have one-run lead before his pitcher goes out to the mound Robbie punched the sooner Hershiser he doubles it and now he dropped you don't see that happen too much and this young man [Applause] he's a very good athlete and you can see he's trying to get his feet in position to go to third but then all of a sudden he can't find the handle and whoops no I still don't have a hole [Applause] and they're going to charge an Aeron Hershiser sacrificing there and this will bring up will Clark Clark last night with a couple of base hits in an RBI that RBI tied the game for the Giants it was off of her Rosco and right now he's got a chance to put the Giants in front here in the first inning and Thompson goes ptosis throw it on a second and it goes down the center field [Applause] and we'll be a stolen base in an error charge to the catcher Mike Scioscia boy I tell you what this is a total turnaround from what we have seen the first two games Thompson with a headfirst dive I don't believe they would have got him anyway but at the same time we pointed out that Hershiser was struggling just a little bit as you can see another angle as Griffin to trying to I think make the tag before he caught the ball Griffin's responsibilities in that situation is to knock the ball down keep it from going into center field and the Giants leading one to nothing thanks to a couple of errors by the Dodgers the count is on 1/2 will Clark and that evens the count at one in one plane getting back to our point though Hershiser in his last three or four starts really not going out there with his best stuff his last outing was very hot in Cincinnati and the although he went nine innings but he was struggling he really had to work hard for it maybe he's just right for the plucking and maybe he's starting to get a little tired his Clark with a base hit to left field Thompson was holding up at second and he can go no further than third base Hey look Blart goes the other way base runners at first and third with nobody out that's good hitting right there by will Park Hershiser trying to keep the ball away from him and we'll just went right with it and of course with the ball being hit on the ground toward shortstop like that Thompson had to make sure the ball went through the infield and that's the reason he couldn't score good piece of hitting by Clark he knows that Hershiser is not gonna pitch him in set on that pitch away and hit it in the left field here's Kevin Mitchell Michell 18 home runs 67 RBIs and Scioscia with a nice play my calls ready he is in the on-deck circle and you're right last night's game he hardly could get any runs on the board and here in the first inning thanks to a couple of errors the Giants are leading one of nothing Mitchell tries to check it Joe West says he doesn't and the count is 1 & 1 [Applause] you can see Hershiser moving the ball around the plate he has pretty good control as we said the last few games oh he's been struggling but he still though he's going to make some tough pitches on you and you have to be very selective with a guy like this one in one to Kevin Mitchell and this one off of Kevin's fist and he fouls it back [Applause] Hershiser was seven complete games two shutouts to his credit he leads the Dodger staff with 183 in his pitch he also has allowed 17 home runs and that is the most of any of the Dodger starters is 119 km Larry and that ball is away they're gonna ask West again and there's no way that Mitchell went around on that swing you be the umpire now he didn't go around on that whatsoever of course Scioscia hoping I think to have the umpire first ring up strike three also trying to figure out Joe West is still angry at the Dodgers from last night well that was weird laugh doing to to Mitchell mrs. that's the purse not here and of course Denny well that's the one thing but I know really irritates Roger Craig is when you have men in scoring position like that to strike out and it was a good pitch by Hershiser here's my cult ready aldready coming in at 282 three home runs 38 RBIs Dodgers now can get out of it with a double play ground ball so what you're saying you get down to like a two and two count we may see Clark go at first pace they may go ahead and send the runner try to stay out of that DoublePlay see what Mike is hitting with men in scoring position shade over 300 with Guerrero holding Clark on there's a hole between first and second and her sides are working the outside corner on one account you can take a look when we talk about that hole between first and second you see with Guerrero on it they're holding the runner there's Robbie Thompson over third quite a bit of room for Sachs to cover and I doubt very much if Hershiser is gonna come inside or give something that aldready can pull he probably keep the ball away like he did that first pitch setting up outside there goes Clark groundball bouncing before Clark goes in the third and he stays there as he had some trouble on the field nice piece of hitting by Mike Craig plays hit-and-run that worked perfect and they even caught the right guy cover which kind of surprisingly you can see Clark going into second base now Betty who doesn't play the dog very much they had the shortstop cover and that does vacated that whole area and Robbie Thompson scores early it is 2 to nothing yeah the Dodgers are in a hole here Giants trying to add to him and they've got Tommy Lasorda mumbling early but I'm surprised when you have a guy like that why wouldn't they have the second baseman cover especially if they're gonna were called ready away like we mentioned see Hill I guess he gets up in the Dodger bullpen and for the Giants it'll be Bob Melvin Melvin had the night off last night coming in at 221 and he grounds this one to whitson woodson is gonna come home and [Applause] first I dropped the ball cool you figure well Christmas had come early the thing that's great about this is the Giants have runners at 2nd and 3rd still is one mile away they get clocked in a run down at Clark there's a good job staying in the run down to how the runners can move up but then you got the picture in the rundown and that's a no-no keep those guys and Clark just steps on home plate but a good running job for Park dog and the point that you made is a good one the responsibility of the infielders is to make that play in one or two throws that way you keep the pitcher out of the run down and now Tommy is mumbling a little bit harder plus the fact you never want to chase it runner to the next base you always want to chase him back to the base book from which he came that's ways he to be safe there's no advancement right here's Matt Williams giant runners at second and third there's one out they'd scored three times here in the first inning three runs on three hits the Dodgers have committed three errors and Hershiser just one air away from tying a record nine Tommy John I'm sure I did it just a couple of weeks ago yeah but the only thing is Tommy made three airs in one play Dodger infield is playing in where were these plays last night well it's been an exciting first inning at least for the Giants and Hershiser starts off Matt Williams with a breaking ball and that's a call strike going one good look at Matt Williams checking out at Phil Fahey down the third-base line now I know this may sound silly but would Roger squeeze in the first inning would he want one more run Roger would like to get another run and he may do it just because it's a surprise play as Williams pops this one up and I don't think Guerrero is going to have room no he doesn't you know they had to squeeze on last night with Brenly hit but it was on hold and that was the pitch that Brentley hit the sharp ground ball to shortstop and they got Nixon at the plate but they had the squeeze play on last night and when you say it was on hold assuming the pitch that Brenly hit would have been a ball or a strike if he had taken it the next pitch they might have been it might have been hot might have been go Williams behind in the count Owen to and he just gets a piece of this and fouls it back [Applause] this is the situation that the Giants would like to see Matt Williams just try to put the ball in play cut down on your strikeouts yeah you're gonna strike out but when you've got runners in scoring position especially a guy on third with less than two outs try to get the ball in play start thinking right-field start thinking right-center here's the o2 and that fall is outside wanted to now would you have the contact play on here contact meeting any ball that is hit if you're the runner at third take off running I would because the worst thing that can happen is aldready gets thrown out at home but Melvin he goes over the third and now you've got runners at person third instead of second and third and there's a flyball centerfield she'll be going back still drifting back and he makes the catch while Jenny comes in to score Melvin goes over to third Williams does his job with a sacrifice fly and your point well-taken their drain because look where he hit it center field which is easier to get a fly ball when you have a guy at third like that if you think center feel the other way just like you were mentioning it is easier to get the ball airborne they almost hit it out there you didn't need much more see what happens in the daytime here at Dodger Stadium the ball carries a lot better and they're gonna walk Jose Uribe intentionally [Music] [Applause] though the Giants have put four runs on the board here in the first inning Roger Craig feeling a little better after that disappointing loss last night but I have to tell you walking into his office this morning and you looked at him you want to know whether the dance had lost or won last night well you know that's what the mark though to me though of a good manager he has to be the rock in the clubhouse if the manager starts to panic boy the players really get punted and he said last night first time this year that he seen his club down in the dumps after the ballgame I think I think that's understandable because I think if you talked to a man down there and that Giants dugout they thought they should have or could have won the game last night he said he closed the door and he had a little meeting with him and he basically told them he said we still got two games left in this series and yeah and go back to the hotel a night get some rest and get ready to play them off swing diminished by Kelly down [Applause] there's the hum baby it's also tough on those types of losses are difficult because when you walk off the field the other team is celebrating and you have to sit there and watch that but it also can help you when you go out there the next day om - now - Kellie down [Applause] so there's plenty incentive for the Giants for losing seven to three Friday night and again that tough loss last night two to one I asked this man kelly downs to go out there and pitch a fine game Kelly swings and misses so she drops the ball and tanks belly down but the Giants come up with four runs here in the first inning and after one half into play Giants poor Dodgers coming to bat [Music] jack-in-the-box interrupts this bite to announce a money-back guarantee don't do it chicken we are on our chicken fajita pita the chicken other chickens aspire to be whitening chicken grilled onions cheese they sure know that we were on a chicken and we're so sure you'll love it it comes with a money-back guarantee the chicken fajita pita at jack-in-the-box guaranteed it's 2:00 to 4:00 this room [Music] çal football returns to Memorial Stadium where the Golden Bears face the university of Pacific Kansas and San Jose State UCLA temple and Stanford in the annual big game you can catch all but 1988 Cal football action by phoning 800 go bears for season ticket read any good beer bottles lately this one tells you that Miller Genuine Draft is the one beer that's cold filtered not he pasteurized so we haven't changed the rich smooth taste of real draft beer and you know what's the best thing about reading this bottle it leads to a very happy ending we go to the bottom half of the first inning and right now the Giants are leading by a score of four to nothing let's run down the starting lineup for the Dodgers leading off and playing second base Steve sax Mike Scioscia doing the catching Pedro Guerrero at first base Marshall in right field shall be in centerfield Heep batting sixth in left field in place of Gibson would sit at third base followed by Alfredo Griffin batting eighth and then the pitcher Orel Hershiser that is the way that Tommy Lasorda is going today defensively Clark is at first base Thompson at second Jose rebei at shortstop Matt Williams at third Kevin Mitchell out of left field Butler in center out ready and right field Melvin behind the plate and on the mound Kelly downs with a record of 11 and 9 and a tra at 3.28 going after his 12th victory of the year for Kelly downs this is his 24th start of the year his third against the Dodgers he has pitched very well against this ballclub he is 1 & 1 with a 0.56 earned run average and he will be facing the leadoff hitter for the Dodgers and that's Steve sax sax last night 1 for 5 Dwain it's very important here in this inning that Kelly downs puts up a zero it would be hard for us to try to explain to the viewers that this may be the most important inning for Kelly downs of this ballgame as that ball is down and in to a no to Steve sax the reason that is it important is that when your team scores if you can make the other team go scoreless that next half inning psychologically it does things to the other team and right now he is behind the Steve sax three and OH and the last thing you want to do his walk Steve sax after you've got a four to nothing lead and I'm sure Kelly down realizes that bottom line is he's just going to have to come back and throw a couple of strikes because Sachs is going to be taking all the way and there is a call strike green one and now it is three and two [Applause] and Sachs just got a piece of that Bob Melvin could not hold on and the count stays full you see right here I'd like to be the catcher take one off the mask like that thousands made a pretty good pitch yes he did that's almost like taking a punch sometimes here's the payoff two sacks and he grounds this one Uribe initiating sacks towards birth long way to go that will be an infield single for Steve sax once again how many times have you seen Hosea rebei make this fly but maybe we're going to have that kind of a game today who knows but that is not an easy play no it's not Uribe it's almost like if you see the ball hit the shortstop and if he gets to it you almost expect him to make the play you get so used to seeing you rebei make those kind of plays you start taking them for granted Mike Scioscia the Dodger hitter so show for for last night no associate did his job defensively once again he was involved in two plays at home plate where he completely blocked both runners off and anytime you're involved in a close game like it was last night it always comes back and I started looking and what Scioscia did defensively and he played a big part in the game as the count is now to a No Kelly going behind the mound kind of having a little clubhouse meeting with himself might be saying something in fact no wait a minute I've got a four-run lead and maybe I'm trying to be a little bit too fine here in the very first inning to a notice OSHA [Applause] want to know where that pitch was well right now he hasn't convinced whole plate umpire Charlie Williams that he's got his control [Applause] and you start throwing a lot of balls the umpires are not gonna give you the close pitches that's a call strike Kirk Gibson is not in the lineup for the Dodgers it's been replaced by Danny Heep an associate is going to have a meeting with Joey Amalfitano I'd say did you put on the hit and run but was that or he might be saying was that the take sign that I saw they the Dodger dugout here's Hershiser still trying to figure out what happened and the top of the first inning see what Scioscia has done against Kelly downs during his career and the count is three one such goes in that person third nobody out well they didn't have the hit run on and so ship talking up about three inches off the knob of the bat just surged went out of the rough field of course with the speed of sax there's no way of stopping him from going around the fair [Applause] roger has to go out and do a number now on Kelly downs and things start to stir out in the bullpen for the Giants well I think Roger more than anybody realizes that Kelly downs is a lot like the little blonde girl with the curl either she's very good where she's very bad the bad seed and when Kelly downs has a bad outing you can usually tell that it's going to happen in the first inning it's going to be early in the game Jeff Brantley who has just recently called up starting to loosen up in the bullpen Kelly his last start lost three to two to the Houston Astros but at the same time he pitched a very very strong game and could have won that game here's Guerrero 2 for 4 last night base runners at first and third nobody out here in the first inning and he takes a call strike going one first batter that you started off strike wide and it makes a difference Guerrero was ejected from the game in the 11th inning last night made no sense to me and why he got so emotional out there at second base arguing with an umpire over a play that he thought was a ball and the Empire should know what about and from that Guerrero got so upset he was ejected from the game and it turned out being roses for the Dodgers because the runner and up story and the runner who replaced him is a much better baserunner and much faster and Franklin Stubbs there's Jill West he tossed Ferraro and then Lasorda Paul Runge then tossed out Mike Davis here's the o2 and it's a fastball inside [Applause] last night in that 11th inning everything went right for the Dodgers but the Giants had plenty of opportunities in the ball game last night to score runs so it wasn't the eleventh inning that beat them [Applause] Koscheck plugs in the third here goes that psychological thing we were just talking about see the stoker darrell tough play for Matt Williams that's a self defense type of a play down there no chance but the Dodgers are very much in this game Kevin Mitchell gets over there and cuts it off now it's Dodgers at second and third nobody out in here's Mike Marshall and he swings in this one Marshall last night 1 for 4 with an RBI he is coming into the game at 272 17 home runs 68 RBIs [Applause] he steps out and he's got some kind of bee or bug that is bothering him [Applause] with the James [Applause] try the story here in the first inning [Applause] without a foot foul down the left-field line yeah this had trouble written all over the downs putting one pretty much in the middle of plate there you can see how far found that that just missed [Applause] they would Marshalls doing with runners in scoring position Kelly Downs is way ahead in the count on two and he gets just enough to piss Matt Williams is going to go to first and that's the first for five 3 with an RBI for Mike Marshall and you know what I think if Matt Williams comes up at the ball cleanly I think they have a play at the plate let's see if he kind of juggles he's looking at it yeah I don't think I should take a chance or maybe I don't have a good grip on the ball I better make sure I get one out somewhere I think you're right it looked like wall this ball was in his glove he was trying to get a good feel of it and once he did get a good feel of it his only play was first base here is Shelby the base runner at second is Guerrero it's now 4 2 2 Giants there was only one out and Kelly Downs is having his problems here in the first inning as did Orel Hershiser in the top of the first [Applause] - no now - John Shelby Shelby a switch hitter hitting 297 left-handed he had a couple of ace hits last night and poor at-bats keep alluding to the ball game last night run even though the Giants lost really was an exciting game for us to do it was an exciting game and with all those kind of games that you can look back and you can you can have fun playing with it see if we could have done this or maybe we should have done that but I think that's what make baseball so great bring out a zombie it went about three hours and four hour in four hours and you really didn't realize you're tired until the game is over with through you know two Shelby and that's a call strike green one [Music] you can see the way that Kelly likes to hold on to the baseball he's trying to hide it behind his legs so that the batter could not see in the event that he changes his grip [Applause] and that's Paul strike two you know some pictures will do that they'll hold their fastball one way and their breaking ball a little bit different seeing the replay looked like that was out of quite a bit of the plate [Applause] pull count to John Shelby Guerrero the base runner at second [Applause] strikes out John Shelby and that's the second on here at Hearst anymore [Music] tailing fastball that might not have been a strike nevertheless he got Shelby to go after it big big at-bat right here another question is would you rather go after he poor weather would you rather go after what's it I think Kelly downs is probably going to go after he pretty carefully and probably won't mind if he walks him the on-deck hitter is Tracy Woodson who is the right-handed hitter although Heep has not had a base hit since July 17 and I always worry about those guys that haven't had a hit in a while those guys scare me to death because they are do now as the starter heap is hitting 363 this is 25th game in the starting lineup and Kelly down with a good pitch on the outside corner one and one the count [Applause] awfully difficult I would think for timing was sorted to give Kirk Gibson a day off pulled one out of account but you have to take care of those guys because there's a lot of time left in the season I'll tell you what I think and the reason why Tommy gave him the day off you have a night game followed by a day game and that he had won he has won the first two games if the Giants would have won the first two games I guarantee it gets him would have been in that good point 2 and 1/2 heat and he fouls this one back 2 & 2 now the count and I have to believe that in the near future within the next four or five games then Roger Craig is probably going to have to do the same thing to will Clark I think so I think Clark needs a day off and I think he needs the day off not so much physically mentally he needs to be told you're gonna shut it down big boy although I may need you later on the ballgame but I want you to shut it down here's the two-two and he puts it away but the Giants come up with a couple of runs here in the Fuhrer the Dodgers come up with a couple of runs here in the purse inning and after one complete Giants four Dodgers two [Music] if you do business across the Pacific United Airlines Royal Pacific Service is just your cup of tea United rededicated to giving you the service you deserved halfway around the world come fly the friendly skies baldon work come on I'll buy you a drink oh there's any money oh what's this and this girl walking piggy bank grandpa I'm an awful big guy back at Dodger Stadium is the Giants 4 Dodgers 2 top of the second inning the Giants hit around in the first inning so Brett Butler will lead it off here in any number to see some of the fans here at Dodger Stadium taking advantage of the beautiful weather like I have a Stanford hat on I believe you did yeah by the way you know mark Marcus there the coach for Stanford coaching the Olympic baseball team and there they're getting ready will they let the games we just want to wish him a lot of luck you bet here's Butler little extra incentive for the fans in Northern California to pull for that USA Olympic team oh and one to Butler and that ball is way in one in one now the count know this game in a way reminds me we've had earlier this year we've had a couple of games Dwayne we really thought would be low-scoring game Butler with this wing in a minute earlier this year Russell and Tudor worked in st. Louis and we thought that would be a low scoring game once again you can see the pitch right there by a Hershiser and that ended up being a 13 to 12 game won by the Cartman and then Russell and Knepper hooked up and that was a high score outside 2 & 2 that was a 13 to 10 game and we really felt that the first night with Tim Leary and Rick Russell that would be a low scoring game although the Giants only scored three runs he'll cut 34 to [Applause] [Applause] so Brett Butler led off the first inning with a double he leads off the second inning with a line drive to left field here's Robbie Thompson Thompson with a sacrifice bunt and the first inning Hershiser can get a handle on it Thompson was safe at first he and Butler both came around to score now we're the way that Roger is going today and looking at the Giants at first inning I would look for a hit and run something here well it's one Thompson hits it in the right field Marshall gets his glasses down and he kicks it away [Applause] I think Robbie had the right idea that time he had that hole over there between first and second the only thing he did he just got under but he was trying to go and hit behind the runner because a base hit to right field good chance that Butler could go around to third we'll Clark he had a base hit between wood Woodson and Guerrero in the first inning and there's the quick toss over to first Butler with 26 stolen bases on the year that's some action out of the bullpen crews right-hander throw it are coming in with 88 RBIs that leads the National League in Butler goes and Clark hits it into left field Heep has got a beat on and that's the second out I see though Roger had that in mind sending the runners so he was thinking hit wrong he just waiting for the right kind of account [Applause] see Clark going the other way with it and on that pitch of course but there was running ball was out of the strike zone and was down and in when the hit and run is on it is your responsibility to swing the bat here's Mitchell Michell struck out in the first inning sizer we'll take a look at Butler now what's going through her Scheider's mind now is that hey my team's back in this game I'm only down by two run have I shut the Giants out the rest away my team's gonna score some runs and I can beat these guys that's what he said your sizer steps off and those two runs by the Dodgers were very important to Hershiser and it's important for him now to shut the Giants down if they want to stay in this game still just the second inning Roger Craig knowing that why is why he continues to try to get guys moving using the hit-and-run there's a pitch out and Butler does not go see Roger giving the signs to built baekjae and now pay he relaying them to Mitchell and also to Bubba and the thing that makes it tough on Fahey is that Roger Craig signs are different than the signs that Fahey uses for the player who's the one Oh right feel that will fall Butler will stay at second base and the Giants have base runners at first and second with two outs and that will bring up my called ready hitting that time by Kevin Mitchell and take a look at the fake by a butler and now all of a sudden he reads they set and Mitchell taking that pitch out of the plate going into right field here's aldready back in the first inning on an hit-and-run with Alfredo Griffin covering second base called ready poked went into that vacant shortstop spot and he came up with an RBI once again I was surprised that they had Griffin covering because out ready doesn't pull the ball back and there's a pitch inside one and Oh it usually is the responsibility of the shortstop to make those calls between him and the second baseman and who is going to cover the bag if there is a baserunner running how do you make that call and that's a call strike one on one and the shortstop what you have to do is you have to go by the hitter what type of hitter is he and what is the pitch that the pitcher is throwing and in my opinion I agree with you if they're going to pitch aldready away you should have the second baseman covering the bag one in one to Aldo and he loops this one down the left-field line and that will be out of play how would you let the second baseman know if you were the shortstop which one is covered well generally the rule of the thumb is the shortstop will cover his mouth with his glove so that only the second baseman can see what kind of sign he's giving if he opens his mouth all the way that means the second baseman is covering if he closes it that means the shortstop is covering here's the 1/2 and that ball is high and the way you explain that is if Griffin is giving the signs to Sachs and he wants Sachs to cover the bag he will open his mouth as if he were to say you and if he wanted himself to cover he would close his mouth as if to say me pretty simple here's the tutu called ready with a base hit to left field let's see if B he's going to send him and he's sending bent ler here is the three ready with the second RBI of the game big big run there that's one of those sayings hey we score useful we're going to come right back after you Orel Hershiser and once again I'll get it going the other way inside-out swing solid single into left field there's no way that heap is going to get butter it's play and the Giants finally had a base runner at second base with some speed where they had a chance to score seems like all the other occasions in this series it's been somebody that hasn't run very well and they've taken advantage of the fact that Scioscia who can block home plate have just not a chance to do it as you can see perranoski talking with the Dodger starter very interesting that you pointed out as we started this game that Hershiser has had some problems even though he's won some games well he's a 16 game winner but the last as I said the last three or four outings he's had he struggling he has had to work hard for whatever it is that he has got here's Bobby Melvin there's two outs aldready at first Mitchell at second and that pitches inside one and all but the good ones run usually will still go out there and win with bad stuff oh the good ones win carry and you have to learn to win games oh look out [Applause] three run home run [Music] buildin homerun number eight her body the Giants are now leading the Dodgers 8 to 2 big hole bran he had a good pitch and that is his fifth career home run against Los Angeles and you talk about how one swing of the bat can do wonders for your ballclub just look at that get another view at it of a different angle look at that head right on and Matt Williams hits this one into centerfield she'll be going back he puts it away the warning track well the Giants come up with four runs in the first now they come up with four runs in the second and after one and a half they are leading the Dodgers 8 to 2 [Music] LuAnn had a difficult problem and ovarian condition that was very painful and extremely difficult to treat I said to her I wish I had a magic wand or something nothing seemed to work except not giving up we solved it Lillian's fine thank goodness then guess what she brought me as a member of Kaiser Permanente you can have a personal physician one like dr. Mary Ann miner Kaiser Permanente good people good medicine right now the only thing that would taste better than a nice cold one is a cold filtered one no genuine drapes yeah if you want a beer whose real draft taste as a venture by the pasteurization we've got it down cold cold filtered Miller Genuine Draft said we've won the division last year some people didn't believe me now I'm gonna make another prediction good seats at Candlestick are gonna be scarce this year so get them now well pants step back in time with the Giants on Sunday August 21st it's a rematch of the 68 Giants and Cardinals and you'll get a chance to see such players as Willie Mays and Gaylord Perry and that's just to name a few it all starts at noon called teletran now four tickets to the old-timers game next Sunday August 21st followed by the Giants and the Phillies at 135 Bob Melvin throws the ball down to second base and he is the man with the three-run home run and the top of the second inning like to compliment Jim Lynch our director and the fine crew that we have here in LA gives us some good shots you bet gives us something to talk about here's Tracy Woodson he will lead it off in the second inning and he starts Woodson off Kelly downs does with a high fastball [Applause] and woodson this one high in the air to left field Mitchell has room and he puts it away these helicopters off the intercom that'll bring up Alfredo Griffin Griffin last night Oh for two coming in at 168 no home runs 20 RBIs [Applause] and Kelly starts him off on the fastball for a call strike on one this game started you said yourself hey Hershiser is going I'll give you a trunk did you take it yeah darn right you I think I woulda they could take four oh and two at a griffon he grounds this one to you rebate he circles it is over the purse and it's out number two it's amazing how he does it but he flows off the wrong foot and he's very very accurate and he continues to make the play watch this instead of getting cut about there it is long foot there it is no one could do that Benny better yeah you don't teach it that way no but Uribe obviously has done it since he was a youngster he gets a lot on the ball but like you said the wrong foot and I think you'll see a lot of the Latin shortstops generally throw very well off of the wrong foot [Applause] and this is a pinch-hitter it is Mike Davis so first Heiser takes an early shower and it looks like we will see Hilla goose Davis takes a call strike : one Mike Davis who was the last player on the Dodger roster eligible to play last night in the next raining game what does he do he gets tossed out of the game he's ejected from the game and talking with Mike day didn't say a word didn't say a word until the umpire looked over there and said that you shut up Aneesa that balls up the gun is not doing one it was one of those games last night it was very long and like we said it was a good game for us to do see when the Dodgers are Luke no one's sitting around Tommy Davis fouls this one back 2 & 2 the count but it all worked out for the Dodgers and ended up that one of their starters Tim Leary went up as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded and two outs and he came through a base hit up the middle Davis skies this one in the right field called ready playing the Sun puts it away so it's three down here in the second inning for Kelly downs after two complete Giants lady Nate to two [Music] when we invented the first American minivan we thought we'd see a lot of competition but when you look around the unequalled front-wheel drive Dodge Caravan clearly stands alone and with prices like this no wonder it's America's best-selling family wagon it's gotta be we carry about 40 different sizes we carry a full range of shorts we carry a full range of extra Long's we carry suits and sport coats up to size 54 we carry pants to waist size 50 we carry shirts with a 19 neck the reason we carry all don't walk to your set for the most far-out fun imaginable the hits are here so take a peek unconventional week starting Tuesday on channel 2 [Music] top of the third inning Giants leading in this ball game 8 to 2 as they scored four runs in the first inning came back and matched that with 4 in the second the new Dodger pitcher will be Shawn Hill igus and call the action and the numbers on hill against here's Steve physiography well his record this year is three wins and four losses with a earned run average of 3.9 this is his 11th outing of the year he's thrown 52 and 2/3 innings given up forty nine hits and opposing teams have a batting average of 246 against him main time Orel Hershiser remember we were sitting in the press lounge last night saying oh man we've got Hershiser tomorrow and you said hey it's likely to be one of those ten to nine ballgames and here we are 8 to 2 it was worth Hershiser zwarst outing of the year previously had given up seven runs against Pittsburgh back on May 12 but since that time he has just been brilliant he's won that nine of his last 11 games until today and you see the story Giants 8 Dodgers 2 and we are only in the 3rd inning of play Steve let me give you a quick update in Houston Padres against the Astros they are in the 8th inning and the Padres are defeating the Houston Astros 6 to 1 Hosea rebei will lead things off he was intentionally passed in any number one and there's a ground ball to Alfredo Griffin [Applause] kelly downs the number two hitter in inning number three it's strike 1 and you wonder if that heat in Cincinnati may have gotten to orel hershiser he pitched in a hundred and six degree temperatures and a hundred and forty on that turf and there's a strike on the outside corner it's no balls and two strikes and he said he was just absolutely drained when they brought him out in the eighth inning and every inning Tommy was sort of to say Orel how you do anything same as last inning you wanted to stay in there well sometimes that could take its toll we mentioned he's coming in to today's game with a hundred and eighty three innings pitch that leads the Dodger staff at second in the National League so he's a workhorse and eventually it's going to take its toll plus the Dodgers are now on a four-man rotation and you're going to ask a lot out of those for starters are there swinger miss down goes cut it down two outs now in the unit and you might see it take its toll in September Steve an interesting note in that Houston game mark parent the catcher for the San Diego Padres hit his first major league home run in the fourth inning he come back it's a second major league home run in the sixth inning six to one maybe this is a day for the catchers we saw a three-run shot by Bob Melvin against the Dodgers here give the Giants and a to lead and boy is that bring a smile to a lot of faces around the Bay Area after losing the first two games of this important four game series Giants lost the first game seven to three on Friday and lost last night in 11 two to one and a pitcher of all people Tim Leary gets back-to-back game winning RBI fouled off and strike two the Brett Butler elegance doing something that Hershiser could not do in the first two innings that's get ahead of the batter's and also try and get this guy out Brett Butler is two for two a double a single and two runs scored - foul count stays the same no balls two strikes Butler adding to his National League League leading run total coming in at 86 now he's got 88 that is exactly what al Rosen wanted when he acquired him in the offseason and a cold sprite three on the inside portion of the plate and Butler is God for the first time in this game and it's the first 1-2-3 inning for the Dodgers the Giants still lead by half-dozen eight to two [Music] now the Reds do it so to Krylon blues-rock pain turns everything old trial on new spray-on krylon for a smooth professional finish with no runs no drips no errors now that's krylon news i paint the old pitching machine with rust magic with our p2 rust magic keeps this picture in great shape and rust magic dries faster than the leading national brand so down right now the only thing that would taste better than a nice cold one is a cold feet yeah if you want a beer whose real draft taste hasn't been changed by heat pasteurization we've got it down cold cold filtered Miller Genuine Draft our guys the new host of the Family Feud and you should watch because he's the best I like Vanna she's adopted Family Feud coming September 19th to channel to all the Giants baseball cards commemorating 30 giant years of baseball in the Bay Area can be yours in this year's baseball card book day it's Sunday September 11 then it's free to the first 35,000 fans at the stick then it's the Giants Astros game at 105 called teletraan now for your tickets to this giant day right now we have a giant day at Dodger Stadium it's 8 - San Francisco Giants with four runs in the first four in the second in Kelly downs appears to have settled down after a rough opening when he gave up base hits to this guy Steve sax Mike Scioscia and Pedro Guerrero well he has to face him here in inning number 3 sax associate Guerrero Giants with 8 runs on seven hits and no errors the Dodgers 2 3 and 3 3 errors all big ones in that first inning contributing that 4 run first inning by San Francisco and there is ball one big doubleheader between first place New York and second place Montreal the Expos starting the day four and a half back of the front-running Mets in the National League East and it was the Mets winning first game for three ground ball Kelly down knocks it down as plenty of time and his one out [Applause] Pacific now a participating sponsor well New York won the first game with that doubleheader 4-3 in the nightcap Montreal is leading one nothing that's just in the first inning though that's Martinez against Fernandez not of runs being produced in Philadelphia it's seven Pittsburgh just took the lead they lead 87 now in the eighth inning bottom of the eighth inning and pirates really desperately needing the win they're not playing well in August at all it's strike one to Mike Scioscia he had a base hit in a run scored back in inning number one [Applause] my ball a strike and Cincinnati getting a shout-out from Jose Rio the Reds beat Atlanta to nothing on a nine hitter here's the one one pitch by Kelly down misses inside two balls in one strike st. Louis's head of Chicago 3 to 2 and bottom of the sixth and San Diego as Dwayne mentioned is leading Houston six to one pairen with two home runs in that game pop foul count even two two balls and two strikes one thing that Kelly downs is still doing is he's throwing a lot of pitches he did have the quickening in the second inning is he retired the three batters that he faced fouled off stays the same two balls and two strikes but he is the one guy perhaps on the pitching staff that can throw you a hundred and twenty a hundred and thirty pitches yeah he's quite the opposite of brick Russell who is gonna stay in that 90 range if he pitches eight or nine innings line drive foul and you're also going to throw a lot of pitches when you've got guys at the plate like Mike Scioscia who do not strike out too much we're gonna continue to foul pitches work the count socha good contact hitter for big guy he doesn't have much power he'll choke up on that baton again he wanted to centerfield that's the base hit he's 2 for 2 and he is that kind of hitter he has only two home runs this year and for a guy who weighs in about 230 pounds right that is really unusual choke up and just kind of slap it around see Butler coming in for a second we thought maybe he had a chance on this ball the guy [Music] [Applause] aren't you right about mike scioscia he he's just gonna put the ball in play and anytime you see a guy that is that slow foot hitting 273 it means he's a pretty good hitter he doesn't get too many infield hits if any and he only has two home runs this year as last one came on June 27 here we go with Pedro Guerrero we're coming into this ballgame he was just in a miserable slump 2 for 25 but he's 4 for 8 in this series and 1 for 1 in this ball game 5 for 9 in the series after that last base hit Butler should have a play and there's two outs [Applause] see Butler taking advantage of the sunglasses and what you have to do when you use those sunglasses as you can see the glare coming off of the lenses as you have to get those glasses down as quick as possible that way you can pick the flight of the ball up if you wait till the last minute usually going to be too late there is a bright Sun today also played with a couple of guys that used to keep the sunglasses in their back pocket them a lot of ghupat and it generally doesn't work and then they'll put them on after there's been a disaster or you wind up with her the pain in the rear your slide wrong Marshall struggling against downs in his career and there's a look at the way Kelly holds it he'll change up like so many of the split fingered artists in the San Francisco rotation social remaining on first base and Marshall takes one ball one strike with two outs here attending there were three of an eight to two ballgames San Francisco leading it is the first time they have led in this series they got down three nothing and that game on Friday came back to tie it up three all and then the Dodgers went on to win seven to three last night it was tied at 1-1 going into the 11th and Leary came through with the game-winner as a line drive base hit back at the middle [Applause] with the Dodgers trying to do is that's a high basketball that Marshall slaps in a center field trying to do is get a couple of guys on and hope that one of their big guys and hit one out of the ballpark to get them close she'll be with only five home runs this year believe he hit 20 last year so he is capable of knocking one over the fences [Applause] checks his swing and it still catches the outside corner wait now they change it for ball one and the Dodgers are a team that are capable of putting together some big innings the on vacation low two balls no strikes it's it's the team's like the Cardinals or the Astros that if you get them down early they had a tough time coming back because their main asset offensively as you see Jose Morales doing some negotiating of the outfielders their main asset is the team speed and you can take the speed away from those clubs they're not going to score too many runs in 180 on the other hand the Dodgers I just have three or four guys in their lineup that can knock the ball out of the park so you have to be careful when they get guys on they can get back in this game with one swing of the bat see mark the time the head trainer of the Giants talking to Roger Craig so she with the lead at second marshal at first two outs and the count two balls and no strikes to John Shelby swing it's two balls and one strike Kelly downs working she'll be away figuring that if he's going to hit one out might as well try to let it hit it out the opposite way which is difficult to do [Music] and he sends it the opposite field right at Kevin Mitchell squares up honor makes the catch and the two hits are denied by Los Angeles no runs two hits and two left and at the end of three it's an eight to San Francisco League [Music] it seems like yesterday the milliard girls were in their strollers today things are changing I'm State Farm agent DeRay after Shannon and Stephanie came along familiars needed our family insurance checkup I showed them ways they could update their family coverage to cover their bigger family like every State Farm agent I work with a family to help keep their insurance up to date keeping up with the girls that's their job and like a good neighbor [Music] cure for athlete's foot hey step up to the mic mic mic isn't this cures athlete's foot it's got something the others don't mic on is all there's nothing more powerful yes you got something that cures athlete's foot sure step up to the mic huh my cats in it cures athlete's foot step up to the cure step up to the mic my kitten also in deodorant spray musical's first again with three unleaded gasoline the best gasolines for cleaning fuel injectors introducing the new performance series choose new unleaded plus 87 proven performance plus 89 or high performance 92 seventy-six well let's know you'll be watched [Music] another great crowd here at Dodger Stadium 47,000 plus and we have a good luck charm that's the reason the Giants are leading 8 to - Ronnie shell he's from the Bay Area but works all over the place you know the guy charms well I thought the guys would be a little nervous cuz I was in the stands today but they're doing all right nervous when you show up they usually win that's right that's true so what we did was we called Ronnie last night say get your rear end down here because we need a victory and a season passive candlestick everything will be perfect I think they're gonna go all the way from here on out you've got to be surprised about the way things are turn at Orel Hershiser eight runs in the first two innings and he's out of here yeah but they're playing the Giants okay uh-huh well we've got Shaun Hill igus to start things up and Matt Williams will stand in a rather Robbie Thompson will lead things off then will Clarke and Kevin Mitchell there's strike one but what have you been doing where have you been I've been sullen dodges for the bad dealers of America making that big deal coming out of card tables soap operas Thompson fouls it off I got a friend in the stands who asked me if Robbie Thompson was related to Bobby Thomson right yeah is he know it would be nice but I think I've been recognized here the fans thank you you're not saying boo they're saying Ronnie Ronnie right [Applause] well Thompson has to count one ball and two strikes it would be nice to see Robbie Thompson hit a dramatic home run does send him to the center of the World Series this year like the guy of no relation Bobby Thompson a five two balls and two strikes these giants a really excited me show they really have been because they've been in position this year where the battered beaten up and they're still in the race you know I've been doing your promos for channel 2 for a number of years and I think it's that's exciting one of the most exciting teams you've seen a lot of baseballs even though well I'll tell you you are required to come tomorrow I'm gonna be here after eight runs in the first two innings the good luck charm has arrived and I wear my my Giants after you know everywhere you go everywhere two balls two strikes nobody out way inside accounts gone full three and two helices very strong with the first three batters that he faced in inning number three or ebay Downs and Butler one two three and those guys with a pair of strikeouts and he has his first full count to a batter in the game to start the fourth base hit back up the middle beautiful all right running every time we have a Giants game Ronnie we have a Giants trivia question I have a question for you what was the world series originally called that's our Giants Feldick a network pretty question what was the world series originally called I should know that because I'm an RN a retired natural that you have time to think about it we have to answer I'll give you poor innings to think about it because we're going to give the answer in the seventh inning I'll be down in the stands you know sitting in the Sun getting a tan Wilcock goes beyond season right he's two for three well he and Mike already had really worked villages and Orel Hershiser very very well in this ball game going the opposite way on four occasions so runners in first and second nobody out and the Giants are already leading by a half dozen threatening four more and this was a good move ministry mr. Rosen getting this guy from San Diego I'd say he has been so terrific the ball club because he's playing on one leg that right knee of his has been ailing most of his season and he swings and no balls one strike serious what was it called a Doubleday extravaganza close that is very close is it not really I thought I'd give you the benefit of the doubt Thompson at second Clark at first base and here's the Owen pitch to Kevin Mitchell throwing away one ball one strike well where will you be next when you go to Lake Tahoe I just got back from there July so we'll be going to there but the folks in the Bay Area can go visit you win it's a it's a negotiating as we speak but I'm always there twice a year at Dell website Sierra Lake Tahoe throw to second base but Robby slides back in as the throw is high for Mike Scioscia the meantime my latest picture can be found on my mother's shelf in your bedroom Nate by ten glossy I gave him she's watching the game big Giants fan is that Andy by tens of you and me what a guy [Applause] two balls one strike Kevin with a drive to left field but Danny he will settle under it it is a mile high and there's wild [Applause] so what's your record attending giant speed we heard you were the good luck charm give you a fall just check how many times they win here at Dodger Stadium and I'm here two-thirds of those means I'm very it's very lucky because these 6.6% that's right so I'm here 6-2 6-4 he's gonna persuade your work and follow us around that's true all dress and I watch all the games that are down here and you know they televised them when they're playing the Dodgers and at canvas on the city here in this smog la that Candlestick Park looks so refreshing anything marriages don't realize well we talked about the other day the wonderful weather you a sensational yes sir it is perfect you go back to places like Cincinnati and st. Louis and the humidity my goodness and then you come back to the Bay Area's like a breath of fresh air one ball no strikes to my called ready and there's a little check swing ground ball to Tracy Woodson play gets my card ready by a step but the baserunners Thompson and Clark advanced his third and second and here comes Bobby Melvin his last time up he took orel hershiser deep a three-run home run his eighth of the year and his fifth in his career against the LA Dodgers you know his first four hits is a major leaguer against his LA team home run is that right yes and you know economy was sort of would like to keep it right here six runs down anymore boy they're really getting out of this game I think there's more to come [Applause] Melvyn could have a career day with a base hit right here he has three RBIs already - ouch though runners on second and third in the pitches in there for strike one [Applause] Hershiser started when two innings he was blasted for eight runs Hilla goose is on now he worked the perfect third and had been in a jam here in the fourth first two runners reached on base hits and then he hits a race Mitchell and aldready and here's the oh one pitch and it's no balls and two strikes mine ears a look at Bob Melvin's three-run glass in that second inning boy he got all of it to left-center field and pushed a 5-2 giant advantage to eight to two Bantam Cal Berkeley [Applause] he's a Golden Bear nor get away from to score Megan mm second [Applause] beautiful is it alright to root when we're sitting here but here's a day you can do anything you want you're the good luck charm okay anybody win 67% of the time comes to the ballpark 67% [Applause] and that is a wild pitch giving it Shawn Hill igus will Clark goes to third base and Melvin has accounted one ball two strikes how many times have we seen that happen issue the count oh and two in a pitcher throw a wild pitch way inside 2 & 2 [Applause] bark with the leave from third one run in and the 2 2 pitch is swung on cap bowel and Social Work Act Rahzel phone play the right side Ronnie when did you fall in love with Giants baseball well I you know I was born and raised in the Bay Area so I was then before the Giants game over the San Francisco see a fan and the Pacific Coast League and my hero at that time was the guy who had managed and named Frank J I left you a deal and then when he when the the Giants came then I became the big man thanks for joining us hey listen Spray I'm in the back Lucinda bucks six Mormons you got it okay good see all right time to giant late we'll be back after this excuse me sir what kind of car do you think this is is it an import you tell me got the sleek lines of an import come on give me a hint it's sticker price under 13 thousand dollars at today's prices it's no import right it's a Buick Regal a Buick for under $13,000 I never thought of you at revalue in fact well I never thought of Buick till now before you buy you better think about Buick Regal the great American value mr. John campanero [Applause] this is as real as it gets a cold filtered Miller Genuine Draft on Sunday August 21st the 68 Giants meet the 68 cards to mark the 20th anniversary of Gaylord Perry's no-hitter it's the equitable old-timers game if they want to make it equitable they AutoCheck Gaylords hat now we televise the first three games of this series here at Dodger Stadium and we'll be televising tomorrow's game at 7:30 on most of these Giants television network stations good news from Dodger Stadium today it's a 9 2 ballgame San Francisco has to leave they scored four runs in the first four in the second and one more in the fourth here you see Tommy Lasorda Tommy kind of kicking back a little bit I'm sure that he hasn't given up hope in this ball game on the other hand Roger Craig feeling a lot better after coming off of that disappointing loss last night talking with Dusty Baker dusty of course spent many years and the other dugout with the LA Dodgers many fine years so Kelly Downs in search of win number 12 this year it's said to work his fourth inning and throw strike one to Danny Heep think about Kelly downs as things didn't look too good for Kelly in the first inning after being staked to a four-run lead [Applause] Dodgers coming to bat in the bottom of the first inning their first three hitters got base hits ground ball just over downs in comes Robbie Thompson to throw out Danny heat one out and then Kelly down settle down to get Marshall Shelby and Danny Kelly started out a little shaky but I think having that four-run lead helped him quite a lot and of course now with a seven run lead it is Kelly's responsibility basically to throw strikes and let the defense work behind you there's a strike to Tracy Woodson and you right he gave up those three basics to sack so she'd Guerrera they had Brantley working the bullpen and you wonder just how far he was going to go Roger Craig had already come out to meet with Kelly try and get him to settle down because this year he's gone hot-cold hot-cold well with Kelly's kind of stuff right now is record at 11:00 and nine hoping to get his 12th today think eventually what you will see is Kelly downs become the pitcher like an all Hershiser where he's going to be five or six or seven games over 500 consistently top straight in the air melvin searching for it now makes it a little snow gone and two outs now catchers do not have the luxury of those sunglasses so they try that I black that I black may help a little bit but it's certainly not as good as having shades and then kill her Bobbie Melvin waiting till the last minute to take that mask off and once you see and I'll fill an infielder a catcher's start moving those feet around you know that they're having problems very nice camera work as well and there's a ball one Alfredo Griffin and that has to be one of the most difficult plays for a catcher to make pop up directly over your head one ball one strike pitchers get so few pop-up setter right above them so immediately their reaction is to start looking someplace else and with that ball right on top of them gives you a tough time to try to read what's going to happen especially if the Sun is out swinging miss by Alfredo Griffin he's behind 1 & 2 I think Johnny Bench is perhaps the best I ever saw take a look at the split-finger Griffen pulling off rarely you'll see Robbie Thompson kick one and they're gonna give Robbie an air on that play is you're gonna see Griffin going after that pitch that was down in the strike zone Robbie got that in between hop and when he tried to recover when he didn't pick it up the second time he's charged with an error Griffin of course has outstanding speed and anytime you get a guy that runs like Griffin you're usually gonna have to catch the ball cleanly especially if it's not hit very hard I've talked to Robbie many times about how he feels defensively and he's a lot like I I was an air used to stick in my neck for weeks I hated it Robbie's the same way especially on a ball that I'm sure he feels is a play that he should have made and that was a play right there that not a difficult play so there's one on and two outs and the pitcher Shawn Hill ago said the plate you seem to forget the great place and remember the bonehead mistake said you man I would rather have gone into an over 20 slope and just make one err delegates really cool by Kelly downs he's in the hole 1 & 2 downs with one strike into the ballgame that was John Shelby in the first Reuben is for steal he's not going and the pitch is low ball 1 1 & 2 46,000 916 in the house today they had 48,000 on Friday they had 47 last night and right near 47 this afternoon and they expect over 40 tomorrow and tomorrow's finale I guess if you're not going to get crowds in a series between the Giants and the Dodgers and you're playing for first place you're not going to get him in those games and you're not going to get him at all better better move to Irwindale [Music] [Applause] three balls and two strikes but you wonder what the attendance will be like in about two more innings and the freeways are clearing up and Dodger fans has an opportunity to stand in line once again they'll probably start to Barbie a little early three balls two strikes and he throws ball for the Shawn Hill against official the first walk of the game for Kelly down is a base on balls to the opposing pitcher and then brings us to Steve sax Giants lead by seven billion - to see Kelly unhappy about it [Applause] I don't like to walk anybody when you got a seven-run lead especially don't want to walk the opposing pitcher [Music] Sachs has got five home runs though he wouldn't be considered a home run hitter and we remember his first one this year first pitch the ball game from Dave drew Becky to start this year and smash went into the season left [Applause] he came to the game hitting 296 he's 1 for 2 in this ball game and Iran score and the pitch to sax he is in there for strike one one ball one strike Pinal now in Houston San Diego defeated the Houston Astros six to one well the Giants can gain ground on both the Astros and the Dodgers for the victory here this afternoon [Applause] [Music] it's an error and a couple left and a at the end of four complete is San Francisco nine and Los Angeles two you know what really burns me up my feet athlete's foot kept flaring up I get rid of it for a while but it just flared up again finally I went to the doctor he told me to get tinactin so doctors and pharmacists recommend most tinactin even cures recurring athlete's foot use it regularly like they tell you and it'll keep the fire from coming back fast actin tinactin puts athlete's foot out for good read any good beer bottles lately this one tells you that Miller Genuine Draft is the one beer that's cold filtered not he pasteurized so we haven't changed the rich smooth taste of real draft beer and you know what's the best thing about leading this model it leads to a very happy ending [Music] it is the thick of the time where she is roller coaster thrills says David Ansen Newsweek it is a certain hit a showstopper says USA Today it is escapist fun that huge with relentless energy says the New York Times it is the highest rated movie ever surveyed by Entertainment Tonight the movie is diehard diehard rated are no playing at theaters everywhere this copyrighted program is authorized under television rights granted by the San Francisco Giants solely for the entertainment of our audience and any publication reproduction are the use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of the San Francisco Giants is prohibited well we head to ending number five with the Giants leading the Dodgers nine to two and we'll give you some scores from around the major leagues type already told you about Houston's lost to the San Diego Padres 6-1 st. Louis it's now down to the Chicago Cubs four to two in the seventh four to three in this bottom of the seventh Cincinnati taking Atlanta to nothing on a jose rio nine hit shutout pittsburgh see philadelphia nine eight that's the final score and montreal trying for a split of their doubleheader with the New York Mets New York won the first game 4-3 and it's tied in the bottom of the second of the nightcap 1-1 Matt Williams to lead things off he will be followed by Hosea rebei and Kelly downs Williams has hit the ball hard both times up based on sacrifice fly too deep about eight people the home run and then in the second inning he hit the ball to the same spot being about 12 feet shy of a home run we saw Hershiser now it's his first chance at villages and Steve sax could not read it through the song when you look overhead with a Sun in it and it is directly where Steve sax and he just saw it coming out of there and finally had to turn its back on it yeah he just basically turns his head because if he lose it obviously you don't know where it's gonna come down and you don't want to get caught now Dwayne he's wearing sunglasses but he did not have them flip down he didn't have time to that ball was not hit high enough for him to adjust the sunglasses down his looping line drives will eat you up here's Jose Uribe he bounced it off strike one so Williams is on first Arriba is at the play nine to two our score Giants lead by seven [Applause] [Applause] rebase slap to the pitch and fouls it off he's behind the count nothing and two and helices continues to work in the mound his birthday next Sunday a week from today he'll be 24 he was the Dodgers number one draft choice and the January 1984 free-agent Draft Nathan really like this young man he started part of this year then dropped out of the rotation when he had three difficult outings in a row at the tail of July in the beginning of August he's back to middle relief Caribe has been productive in his last few games Williams with the leave is the pitch it is a called strike three and that strikeout number four for Hill agates in the game see hillock is coming back with a pitch the inside corner he had been working Uribe away and a lot of times you get that in your mind you keep thinking away away away and then a guy comes in bust you with a fastball and the only thing you can do is take it that brings us to the pitcher Kelly downs he's a one eighty eight hitter this year and 165 in his career he takes low ball one struck out his first time against Hill again struck out his first time up in this game against Hershiser kellyo 4-2 bounce it off one ball one strike now this is a situation where you really don't want to have Kelly downs running the bases of course you don't want him to stand up there and take three strikes either so I guess what you let him do is just let them play the game it's one ball in two strikes I don't think Roger would be disappointed if he struck out [Applause] bill Fahey with the shines the one to pick and he go around the first base umpire Joe s says no and the count evens at two balls and two strikes always interesting as you see Kelly holding back that always seems like the guy who has a problem with an umpire on one particular night and it happened to be last night with Guerrero and Joe West now they're both at the same position on the infield two balls two strikes so if they want to carry that problem over into the next game they don't have to talk from long distance no they don't and it was just Guerrero at first base for no reason at all when the ball got away from the catcher for San Francisco and rolled away Guerrero went to second and on the play he must have said hi and I'm like the way you called you're not going boxing Joe Price and I'm sure a few expletives were thrown in and Joe West had you're gone by swinging the mist down goes Kelly down strikeout number five for helices in the game and that takes it to Brett Butler the Giants lead off man but Rick Monday who does the state Channel basically said for this Los Angeles Dodgers said this game started with a 20 year old rookie and ended with two stupid veterans right and there's Rick a bold statement you might catch that in USA today under strongest statements comments well I remember Rick Monday the one at bat in 1982 he hit a grand slam against Fred briny and Butler takes one peek down the right this one is [Applause] Joe West with the call he hided all the way and as soon as he threw up that right arm to signal foul Brett Butler put his head down said oh man I thought I had the Butler's got a good view of this because it's hit right down the line and you really have to wait because you don't know if his ball is gonna curl around the foul pole Wow and you can see that that ball just missed the foul pole probably a couple of feet and Butler good camera work is helping it out a little bit you know that one angle it looks like you saw a white flash like the yellow foul pole might have gone in front but no discussion from Dusty Baker so it is just a long strike one for Brett Butler and here's the pitch to Brett Dixon high one ball one strike you know you hit so many home runs in your career did you have any of those well I know but know that the knurled around none that I could even wish would stay fair [Applause] coulda shoulda woulda yeah are you gonna do [Applause] they just would not throw that fastball none of them wanted to be embarrassed face throw this guy off speech stuff away here's the to on pitch two balls and two strikes Gilligan coming on pretty strong [Applause] they do give up the run in the fourth inning I was aided by a wild pitch Butler Texas swing and we have a full count three balls two strikes with two outs a man on first base and Matt Williams where they really pray Brett Spray that ball to left field Shelby and centerfield its way around [Applause] and here's the payoff Williams going in Butler hitches the warning track look down here put their fifth of the year [Applause] now Brett Butler with a two-run home run here in the fifth inning he just missed one is it went home he comes back in a 3-2 pitch right there where he likes it and he hits this ball into the Giants bullpen Marshall going back and Butler swing it's a short swing very compact but for a little guy he does have some pop and watching very quickly take his congratulations and get out of there homerun number five for Brett Butler this year in RBIs 36 and 37 and that has to be kind of a proud moment for him because the LA Dodgers were courting him in the offseason and they're nice and pretty Gibson now they negotiating what Gibson I should say you know we really want to go to Kirk and that would make you bendable we've got a pinch-hitter for Robbie Thompson at Ernest rile so day game after a night game is good to see Robbie get a little break there's fastball up high one ball no strikes Ernest riled with a couple hits in this series his average right at 265 how do that it gives your extra men a chance to get some swings when court and a bench can be in last night's game as both managers Lasorda and Roger Craig used all of their players Brow's pops it up left field side Tracy Woodson [Music] and it's one ball in two strikes on deck is Joel Youngblood so will Clark make it a break as well see Woodson holding his ribs he goes into the wall here hard he has to extend himself to try to catch it [Applause] you can see pops up against that scoreboard and that'll jar you those things don't move generally well this ballclub does not need another third baseman with a rib problem Jeff Hamilton is out for three weeks because of cartilage pull that pulled away from his rib and he's really been in pain there's a fastball high it's two balls two strikes to Ernie Ryan believe the only players position players it didn't play last night's game for the Giants were Melvin and Chris Speier Brow's ground ball right field side Guerrero takes care of it to elegance and now I know the Giants but they come up with two runs the two provided by Brett Butler's fifth home run this year and at the end of four and a half innings of play it's San Francisco 11 Los Angeles to extraordinary things happen when you visited San Mateo County Fair and for a fiesta the sheer abundance of flowers will amaze her senses the carnival rides filling you with laughter and the plaza stage will delight your ears with an incredible variety of music have an extraordinary pain fix method for Mateo County Fair and floral fiesta I mean Friday August 4th through Sunday August 21st I'm new oh it's videos on tires man what the right set can do for your car [Music] [Music] they'll fill your car back up with performance da radios from BF Goodrich we make your car perform jack-in-the-box interrupts this bite - announcer money-back guarantee don't with chicken with chicken we are on our chicken fajita pita the chicken other chickens aspire to be white meat chicken grilled onions cheese they sure know their way around a chicken and we're so sure you'll love it it comes with a money-back guarantee the chicken fajita pita had jack-in-the-box guaranteed it's too cool for this room Giants with reason to smile on this beautiful Sunday afternoon here in Los Angeles bottom of the fifth inning they lead by 9 and defensive stick changes my called ready is now the Giants first baseman replacing will Clarke earnest Ryles takes over for Robbie Thompson at second base Donnell Nixon is the new center fielder for Brett Butler and Joel Youngblood will gone to right field taking over for Mike already who made the move from first base means immediately checking out that I sky it's good to get it by nine runs because Kurt even the day off and do one just has to wonder like Clark and Steve sax who play every single game of the season and play so aggressively if they were like Gibson just really worn to a frazzle yeah you have to give those guys a day off once in a while which is high ball one and when you get involved in a lifer like this one is myzel take advantage get some of your starters out of there and sometimes it's not physically you shut down but mentally your going on remember a great basketball coach al McGuire with his Marquette lawyers used to tell his club about 2/3 of the way through the season when they had maybe four game days off he'd say for two days I don't want you to see a pic of a basketball if you pick up a basketball and I catch you you're suspended for one game just get away from it enjoy yourself Mike search has the count two balls in one strike and when you play a hundred and sixty two games what's that mantle wear-and-tear life well it can get to you more than it can physically and something it is hard to explain what mental fatigue is like but we start going out there every day 462 games mentally and physically to poop to pitch is swung on and so she's gone and a lot of times what you have to do is is you have to take advantage but the home page that you have on the schedule a play on the west coast you don't get that luxury as much as you do if you're back east because generally you're off days are spent sitting on an airplane flying to these coasts and I always felt like that wasn't a day off doing all that flying can take as much out of you just sitting in the airplane most Pedro Guerrero comes to the plate right let me ask you this is a game like this 11 to 2 you're leading with your time you're playing second base a hot day and sometimes we forget the count and just standing out there playing day after day after day well yeah that can happen but you also have to remember as a professional athlete the last thing you want to do is embarrass yourself in a game that is completely out of hand over his head [Applause] his fastball gets away from the Kelly downs and Guerrero he just ducks Kelly down wanted to hit him he could have done it ball Matt William lays it on the second Guerrero is gone five two three when Pedro van hit you know he would come to the mound probably so David Cone hit him earlier this year on a curveball he said baby if I wanted to hit a might throw a fastball he threw a curveball this time we played by Matt will would play that backs up a little bit so he can get a better read on that last hop and you can get away with that if you have a strong arm well when Guerrero was hit by David Cone he threw the bat Adam and then was suspended consequently for like was it about a week and here's Mickey Hatcher's a looping flyball Kevin Mitchell China caught Kevin backing up action made a wide turn to Mitchell has a great arm [Applause] it's going to take Mitchell at least a week to adjust to the feel now the thing that Mitch has got going for him is he's playing on the same side of the field it would be more difficult for him if he were going from third base to right field the ball comes off the bat obviously the same way and he can view that from blood feel like he would from third base I feel right at Gill young but he makes the catch and the base hit is denied by San Francisco Marshall left stranded and at the end of five inning to play it's 11a to San Francisco [Music] come on dad you bought this Toyota Camry just got a new v6 no no the room oh I bought it cause I've wanted an affordable Camry for years charlie no really I bought it cause you like to look good going to church I bought it cause my Reverend doesn't to be six the powerful new Camry v6 Toyota quality who could ask for anything more after a long day of eating hot lead there's nothing better than drinking a cold Miller Lite white sure tastes great and it really is less filling shoot there's only one light beer Miller Lite hey Joe give me another that didn't fill me up at all next time on Cheers Frazier's girlfriend moves into his place how was your day and Sam and Diane are invited over for a little housewarming party what the hell's in this different why they sure look happy that's their recipe for love and I keep no secrets from each other oh so you know about Diana she lived with you Monday at 7:00 followed by mass on Channel two San Francisco with four in the first four in the second one more in the fourth and two in the fifth they have an 11 to 2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers and the mantle Lee things up for San Francisco will be Joel Youngblood he moves into will Clark spot and of course he's playing right field and defensive changes for the Los Angeles Dodgers Mickey Hatcher is now in right field Dave Anderson has gone to second base to replace Steve sax who has played every game this year for the LA Dodgers and Franklin Stubbs is the new first baseman Rick Dempsey is behind home plate and he replaces Mike Scioscia and Ally things up for San Francisco again it's a Joel Youngblood to be followed by Kevin Mitchell and then Mike already so tommy lasorda taking the cue from Roger Craig puts in some of his bench players in this game [Applause] a six of his last 18 swing-and-a-miss Joe collected four hits on Sunday his first multiple hit game of the year when he last hit forests way back on May 30 1981 with the Mets against the San Diego Padres he's mainly come off the bench for San Francisco and there is a swing and a Miss at a breaking pitch and it's no balls two strikes helices has thrown well but he has given up three runs in his three innings of work he will run in the fourth in a two-run home run to Brett Butler in the fifth he is struck out five [Applause] bounced it back to the screen [Applause] [Applause] one ball two strikes and I think you're right Steve some of the people here taking an early trip home - and - sure they're disappointed after two exciting games that we had Saturday night but is like Ron fairly said hey we should have known it with Kelly Downton orel hershiser throwing Griffin goes out a participating sponsor Miller Lite the great taste there's only one left and I say that with tongue-in-cheek about Hershiser and downs you expect a one-nothing duel and certainly has nothing the case like the first time they left you guys is locked up here at Dodger Stadium in the game to the season when Hershiser shut out Kelly downs five nothing but Kelly threw five perfect innings that day while I'm sure they felt the same way in Boston Steve with Eric King going against Roger Clemens Detroit proceeded to score four runs in the first and kevin mitchell rattled him down the line extra bases he makes the turn at first he'll be in a second [Applause] and we'll see what they do on this play as a relay roll comes home Danny he had all kinds of problems in left-field would that drive down the line by Kevin Kevin gets a fastball about belt high and he gets it just inside the line now it hits the cement and this rolls way away from Danny Heep and once it got by Heath Mitchell one in the third easily actually rounded third very hard and he is standing there and I believe they're going to give him a triple yes they have so Mitchell's on third base with one out here's my calls really he is at a very productive day talking about that Detroit Boston game Detroit scored four in the first five in the second five in the third they eventually went on to beat the Red Sox 18 to 6 Roger Clemens you would think someone else was would be pitching low one ball one strike so Hershiser and Clemens share the same fate yesterday the Red Sox jumped all over the Tigers and they put up the white flag and today white flag is thrown in the air by Boston and it's hitting the air left field shine but out of play and it believes that stops Boston's winning streak at home 20 poor game the happy man good thing he stuck around they were nearing a New York giant record of 26 in a row we're in second place and I believe the Pittsburgh Pirates were in first place something like 28 wins in a row and there is a live shot Tracy Woodson handles beautifully fine play by Woodsen as you can see aldready continuing to go the opposite field Woodsen fully extended takes away a hit and an RBI from my called ready but I've got to believe this is really a good sign for my called ready to of his base hits have been to left field both have driven in runs and he's handled a pitcher well when he goes to the opposite field you know his average is going to climb he came into this game hitting 282 it had fallen from right about 310 a month ago and they need his bath villages for the 1o pitch to Bob Melvin a pops it foul now that's one two three in the ballgame but is first time on an air that scored will Clark and hit the great in the three-run home run in second here's the 1-1 pitch with two hours bob pops it up Stubbs grace is over but can't make the play as it goes into the first row there's one ball two strikes and I mentioned that great play by will Clark and the person almost set the stage for this ballgame in the way the Giants were going to play will Clark got caught in a rundown and ran over the pitcher Orel Hershiser knocked him down and knocked the ball out of his glove and Clark scored in the play though it's nice to see someone else covering home plate besides ocean [Applause] but you could almost see will Clark looking forward to that collision now our catch is Rick Dempsey chili Davis has hit a home run for the Angels they're now leading the Oakland A's two-to-one that's in the bill Thank You pitch Melvin foul [Music] and we'll Clarke was saying that was he when he was on first base with Mike Scioscia he asked him he said you know do you ever get hurt over there and he says well Jack Clark hurt me the worst he really mowed me down but he said all of them are painful groundball Griffin will handle it and the one-out triple goodbye Kevin Mitchell goes for not no runs a base hit Dan our score at the end of five and a half it's the Giants 11 and the Dodgers 2 [Music] [Applause] we're American goods in American workmanship of the best in the world he turned around a 10-year economics line and created a boom that has made Massachusetts one of the hottest economies in the country he brought people together created over 400,000 jobs and pushed personal income to the highest levels in the nation he erased a massive deficit balanced ten budgets in a row and cut taxes five times it wasn't a miracle it was leadership by working together to create opportunity in a good life for all all of us are enriched not just an economic term but as citizens and as human beings for a new era of economic weakness in America Michael Dukakis for president the 40th annual Emmy Awards coming August 28th [Music] and we've got a great series coming your way at Candlestick Park David Johnson in his New York Mets parade through Candlestick on August 16th for a three-game series Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 735 and Thursday at 105 don't miss it as East beat sweats call teletran now for tickets there's your numbers to call like to mention that those games on Wednesday night actually it'd be Tuesday and Wednesday night will be on Giants vision so there's been a lot of action that folks back home have been able to pick up to the wonderful invention of television kept you employed huh oh goodness here comes a beach ball [Applause] yeah that usually happens when it's 11:00 to 2:00 fans start to try to figure out how they can have some fun here at the ballpark and generally see some beach balls start flying around and pipe I loved your comment at the break give Kelly downs 11 runs and I feel real comfortable I don't take my chances you better believe it the Giants have given him a lot of runs aboard lately he's seven and two of the two nine six earned run average in four complete games in two shots over his last nine starts and the club is average seven and a half runs in his last nine games and with that record of seven and two he settled down after throwing golly 30 pitches in that first inning [Applause] Danny Heep with the count two balls no strikes and he lies but over the head of Jose Arriba [Applause] that's the first base hit for Danny Heep since July 17th at Chicago 16 games [Applause] Bob Melvin having a little chat with Kelly downs [Music] sure that Roger Craig would like to get as many innings as he can out of his right-handed starter as you see the number of pitches that he's thrown [Music] but then again you don't want to go out and really get you right in there weary a whooping goes the opposite way Youngblood comes on makes the play on one hop runners in person second and that will get the giant bullpen bullpen busy now with Roger Craig does he want a complete game out of Kelly downs obviously you'd like to bring him back later this week with a lot of rest he's coming off of that I guess it is almost capsulitis in his right shoulder no I don't think so I think what he'd probably like to do is is see how Kelly does in this situation and then maybe use the kid Jeff Brantley when we're talking about a score that's 11 to 2 yeah you don't want to let the Dodger sneak back in but why not use Brantley because he's a young guy and he needs the experience Downs has gone is 5 innings and it's a ground ball my calls ready he'll go to first base one big out run at the bass to second and third also these are Kelly's runs that are on the basis and I think Roger would like to have Kelly be able to get out of his own Jam as opposed to bringing in a reliever that reliever gives up those runs and and then you've got a picture that's unhappy because even though they are his runs he didn't get a chance to get out of the jam himself and downs will hit in a third spot in the bottom of the sixth and we will have a pinch-hitter for Sean Hill Agusan a man gets a standing ovation Kirk Gibson this is not a tense moment the score is 11 to 2 with the dagger fans want any kind of offense they can get right now now they're gonna get get to the chance to [Applause] and put the Dodgers on the board by doing that hopefully what they think is if he hits a homerun now you've got an 11 to 5 game also he can hit a sacrifice fly pick up an RBI or even a base hit knock into plus I suppose that there are people that may have paid good money to see Kirk Gibson play well now that he has come in to pinch-hit they're going to get that opportunity to see him and there's Timmy Cruise down in the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen so he'll be the new pitcher and I should take the field in the 7th Gibson checks in there that batting average right at 300 he is 63 RBIs 22 home runs a hundred 27 hits this year and four in a close game Gibson would be intentionally walked because first base is open and Dave Anderson is the hitter on deck [Applause] but this is a close game and one thing that the Giants do not want is to have guys aboard and then have somebody hit the Grand Slam [Applause] they're gonna score runs you want to make them hurt everyone here's the o1 pitch ground ball Ernie Roz will take care of it and Gibson gets the run across it's now an 11 to 3 ballgame as scoring as Danny Heep the play goes for 3 and Gibson gets the RBI number 64 on the year [Applause] [Music] Giants have a pitcher warming up in their bullpen and I think it is Brantley [Applause] you can't seem because he's hidden by the stands here's Dave Anderson who came on defensively as a replacement for Steve sex is taking a educated guess it's a pretty good one and Davis were the only guys who didn't work last night it's two balls and no strikes yeah that's Jeff Brantley mississippi state product one of four now in the major leagues who played with will Clark his will Brantley Roger Thigpen and Rafael Palmero of the Chicago Cubs ground ball Matt Williams takes it easily and the Los Angeles Times who's here in the bottom of the sixth they come up with a run but they leave a man stranded and at the end of six complete it's eleven to three Kelly downs in San Francisco one of the biggest drawbacks in today's performance is the sluggishness caused by dirty intake systems so we developed kefir and supreme the high octane gasoline with separately no additive cleans and tire intake systems better freedom away without any drawbacks Shepard we fuel your freedom to be a going keeper always taking shots at just that's why gods like to hang out where there's plenty of friendly people you know plenty of a goalies favorite beer Miller Lite oh yeah how's it going John place less filling and there's nothing like enjoying the great taste of light with a lot of familiar faces there's only one light beer Miller Lite she never dreamed she'd win but there it was best of show she had her hardware store to thank for this two years ago when couldn't tell a fee from the fog after all if it hadn't been for that California certified nurseryman gardening would still be a mystery good things happen when a store understands service this one does [Music] top of the seventh inning the Giants the 11 to 3 the new pitcher for the LA Dodgers is Tim Cruz joining us from the radio booth from km BR is Ron fairly and there you can see the tool soldiers that used to try to play this game once in a while you of course played a lot longer than I did about 5 years younger than dirt that's true and I may not be 5 years younger than dirt but I certainly feel like it see little picture out there the mouth Tim crews taking over for Sean Hill agos those are the numbers that you can see on Tim Cruz we know this year yeah he has been used thirty times thirty first appearance decision both the Giants and the Dodgers getting the chance for their bench players to see some playing time to get some swings this game was over now you could say it was over in the second but it was probably over with on the pin that's when the score was 11 to 2 quite a contrast of the first two games in this series Giants had their hitting shoes on this afternoon Matt Williams 1 through 2 will lead things off single and scored his last time up and there is ball walk cruise wines and the 100 delivery check swing lookout set them up the other alley down there look out Rick hey Rick Russell should be one of those extra players responsibility to protect Rick Russell on those volleyball he wouldn't argue but they're down there but they're all playing Big Daddy moves around pretty good even take care of himself to left-field hit pretty good keep going back and it's off the wall back williams is going to go into second with a double so Matt Williams has a couple of hits today [Applause] four hits for him now in the series take a look at Matt Williams Cruz with the breaking ball up in the strike zone his ball hits down at the bottom of the fence and Danny Heath played the ricochet very well and Matt Williams had a hustle in the second base didn't need much more for that ball to get out of here here's Jose rebase down again Jose old for two he's grounded out and he is struck out now when you played here at this ballpark was as similar as it is since I started coming to Dodger Stadium when the ball really travels better in the daytime well it has always carried better in the daytime but the fences are 15 feet closer now center field was 410 now they didn't move the fences in they just moved home play out so there's a great deal more room behind home plate now than you are [Applause] rebei takes ball on why did they do that you see the dimensions of ballpark it used to be 373 370 380 390 and 410 but now the dimensions are 360 370 385 and 395 I realize the Dodgers probably had all that good pitching for their ballclub changed a little bit they had Garvey coming in and say and of course they've always have had beach balls here they haven't changed so is more of a hitter's park well that they kept the fences big because they wanted to protect the pitching staff they kept saying all those poor Dodger pitchers nobody scored any runs which is redolent thinking any money popped up right there at home plate Dempsey makes the catch in foul territory and rebei is out of her life now trivia question for you see if you got the answer this book what was the world series originally called well if you said the temple cup you are correct I did not know I didn't know that one either they also had the MVP they years ago and I I forget what they call that as candy maldonado is going to pinch-hit for Kelly down so candy would get a chance to swing about here but originally the the MVP was was called something and I'm not sure what that it was it named after a commissioner was it I'm not too sure but you could not win it two years in a row there's a pitch that is over for a strike that's kind of strange well it is that's the reason Babe Ruth didn't win it more Kalevala Williams out at second base check swing tap found along the third-base side strike two to Maldonado this is not a fun at-bat for Canada it is not a fun at-bat simply because it's an 11 to 3 game and candy sitting backs it okay I may have the day off you know I probably couldn't be in there tomorrow sit back and relax the next thing you know the skipper says hey get it back and you're not even ready to go but you have to take it serious yeah then you got it you got a short period of time if you better you better concentration go one ball insist on well it will be interesting to see what Roger Craig does for the next week or so it looks like my called ready is starting to swing the bat and we will see if he platoons candy maldonado and my called ready the one key thing just missing you hear their fans in the background they have a very large beach ball that is kind of bouncing around right now you can see the pitch just missing the breaking ball just missing the Maldonado outside Carly Williams took a little while to make that call I don't think he was real sure it looked like he was thinking about the strike great yeah - to pitch full count 3 & 2 you know also you bring up the point when you mentioned downs reading and that is the coaches have talked about this they said we don't know whether Mike is the kind of player that can play every day now maybe he's the kind of player that can play only like five days a week he needs a little bit of rest now free to pitch low ball for down the first base girls candy I have seen a lot of players that have been in that category they would love to have him play every day and they would love to have him have five 600 at-bats but the season being as long as it is it is good to know that you have someone that you can use like that but maybe he's one of those players that needs a day off now maybe more so than others yeah that could be an the other thing that that happens to a player like my called ready is a lot of times he becomes an insurance policy for a ball club well let's try this guy out there if it doesn't work we can always put aldready out there and that's not fair to him now here's Donnell next shuttle he takes ball one no I'm sure the Giants would like to find out what Mike can do if he does get 500 at-bats back up the middle that's a base yep [Applause] door Kenny's going to go around a third it is now 12 degree so Donnell nexor as a chance to swing the bat and he continues to swing it well Nexen hits this ball right up the middle pretty good pitch down and away and the Giants continue they have their hitting shoes on as everybody is getting into the act right now Ron perranoski the pitching coach has gone out to the the home plate umpire Charlie Williams and has said something before he has gone to the mound so that tells me that maybe something is wrong with Tim drew maybe he has a little bit of a tender arm and so perranoski wants to check with the umpire first and it looks like they are going to make a pitching change and the umpire at third base has pointed to the bullpen so indeed that is the case and that's what they're going to do it is going to be Brian hooker coming in holy really not ready down there and does not know that Kansas our he will be given enough warm-up tosses on the regular mound if he needs them he continues to throw now as he decided that he's gonna make his entrance let's get back just for a second ballot let's take a break first they're gonna make the pitching change and so Holton is going to come in and take over for Cruz the score here at Dodger Stadium as we go here in the seventh inning Giants leading 12 to 3 we'll be right back every day people make a little more sense of a complicated world with the National edition of the New York Times here there's a complete daily business section not just market reports but a full perspective on the events the trends the people who shape the way the world does business it's all here world and national news it's here the surprising new living arts section and business day the more you need to know the more you need the times have it delivered right to your office or home a couple times I wondered why'd you get yourself into McManus [Music] came together there's no telling what you can do okay especially when you have somebody who believes you can do it babe [Music] your balance is this is your bank's idea of 24-hour service you're listening to the wrong bank talk to Wells Fargo and get real people anytime you want only with Wells Fargo checking of all the banks in California only one offers real people who can really help anytime from any phone Wells Fargo 24-hour person to person checking you've got to hear it to believe it is very much in command in this game as you can see 12 to 3 margin we're in the top of the seventh inning and the new pitcher for Los Angeles is Brian Holton and for Brian he is making his 36th appearance of the year he's appeared in 35 games and as a six in three record er a oh seven and has one saved to go along with that he has worked in 65 and a third innings this year [Music] let's bring you up to date while hoping we'll be given enough warm-up tosses because of the tender elbow or shoulder for Tim Leary and so Brian Holton will given given all of the warm-up tosses he needs to get loose so let's run down some of the scores in the American League and one for the Bay Area you want to keep a track of in that California Oakland gate that is for for after five innings of play he's rolled out three runs in the bottom of the of the fifth inning to tie that game around the other games Detroit jumped all over the Boston Red Sox they won 18 to 6 and that snaps the 24 game winning streak at Fenway for the Red Sox Cleveland defeated Texas three to nothing in a shutout New York 9 to 6 over the Minnesota Twins Baltimore at Milwaukee and that is in the bottom of the ninth inning and it's a high-scoring game Baltimore let's see 5 8 11 and Milwaukee has 6 so it's 11 to 6 in that game Kansas City shutout Toronto 6 to nothing and Chicago at Seattle after five and a half innings of play Seattle leading eight to nothing in that game also we'd like to remind you of the upcoming homestand the New York Mets will be in town on the 16th 17th and 18th and by the way the Giants are 5 & 1 against the Mets this year then the Phillies will be in for a three-game series and then rounding out the homestand the Montreal Expos on the 22nd 23rd and 24th good teams coming in all those teams playing well right now especially the exponents and it should be a very very important series coming up for the Giants [Music] Dwain we were just talking a couple of seconds ago while we continue to warm up about Mike out ready and when we were talking about the fact that that it's not a bad thing to be eclair that maybe you can't play every day because I've played with a lot of guys that for some reason they just needed some time off and it they didn't mean him so much physically as it did mentally yeah there are players like you mentioned and it takes a while for the manager for your coaches or for the organization to find that out about a player the only way you can find out is by having him played for a while and then judging whether he's a player that gets tired we're not saying that that's exactly a problem for my called ready but what we are saying is if you have other players that can fill in you might as well take advantage of it of course you wouldn't do that with a will Clark because here's what he's durable he's very durable and psychologically he can play every day although you got to give him a day off too and I still think that within the next four or five days you're gonna see will Clark spending a game on the bench although he probably used as a pinch-hitter so we're ready to get this game back underway runners at first and third one man out and here is Ryan's and a pending ball is over for a strike one thing interesting about Holton when he came into the game against the Giants back in San Francisco I think he threw about 25 pitches at least 24 of them were breaking balls [Music] get on the ground to shortstop and they have the one-play on to first Maldonado scores and it is 13 to 3 so Ryan's picks up an RBI see candy coming down the third-base line he knows that this ball is hit softly and there's no way that at this point in the game Alfredo Griffin is gonna make a play at him at home plate so two men are gone and here is Joel Youngblood he is oh-fer one he bounced out to short he's only time up one ball no strikes you know it's also good to have guys like Youngblood have a chance to play and give them some advance in games like this one ball one strike and it's really not so important as to what they do now but what it does is that tomorrow or the next day when Roger wants him to come up to pinch-hit he's had enough at-bats and his chances of getting a base hit or even better it's right at least he knows what the batter's box looks like sure as you can get involved in a pennant race and have to play those key guys all the time and all of a sudden your bench they haven't been used in four or five games and then all of a sudden you're gonna ask them to win a game for you yeah game on the line and you got the winning run in scoring position the guy hadn't been up to the plate and say ten days that's tough now that's really tough one ball two strikes Colton is one of those guys as you can see anything can happen in the 13 to 3 game now with a giant's hat on when Moulton's one of those guys with the slow breaking curve ball and does throw a lot of off-speed pitches after you face the Leary and a Belcher and a Hershiser he can come in and he can trick you ace it up the middle and another run will score and it is 14 to 3 in favor of the Giants and so Youngblood comes through and that was really a good at-bat and that's those kind of things that Youngblood will will use that on his confidence level and that will help him when he's going to be needed when the game's on the line that we're just talking about I think confidence is the key word Youngblood this is a scene I base hit but when you're a bench player I think you'd rather get that pace hit and feel real good about a line drive right at somebody here's Mitchell and there's strike one you know that's something that really did happen to Harry Spellman this year where he went through a period where he hit the ball pretty well and just did not catch any breaks and when you're a bench player you're not going to get too many opportunities to get that average up there comes back with another curveball one must be after the seventh-inning into centerfield that is playable for Shelby and it takes care of the Giants in the inning three runs on three hits and we go to the bottom of the seventh inning 14 to 3 Giants you know when I pitch I used to have trouble in the late innings but I won't have any trouble pitching my favorite beer Miller Lite lights less filling and it's and it's lights list filling and it's uh likes less filling and it's uh that's it for today Mike bad delivery oh hey Rowley finish it up and it tastes great too [Applause] everyone knows certain times are better than others to buy a new car especially when a dealer needs to clear out just a few of this year's models to make room for next year's so if you are looking to make a great deal this is a good time to talk to your Toyota dealer with over five thousand eighty eight Toyotas in stock right now we think he's in the mood to listen you know what bugs me guys would never call you - they're really in a jam you never hear from til they're in trouble are you talking about pal you know the kind of people who don't call ahead for tickets no I don't well what'd you think I was talking about yeah right kids head to the stick on Saturday August 20th and you'll receive a free painters cap if you're 15 or under then you can watch the Giants play the Philadelphia Phillies had a 1:05 contest that's August 20th cheer on the Giants with your painters cap and you can call teletran right now for those tickets the Giants the new pitcher is Jeff Brantley Brantley taking over for Kelly downs and Ron you got the numbers on mr. Brantley where Bradley this is his third appearance of the year he has not been involved in any decision so he has an e ra at six and four kelly downs kelly went six innings three runs and eight hits he walked none and he struck out walk right now he's on his way it looks like he has his 12th victory of the year Jeff Brantley on the mound he made a will Clark at Mississippi State when they were in college very very nice young man and he's going to be facing Rick Dempsey the catcher followed by Stubbs and then Hatcher pilot 2nd base Chris Speier now has taken over as the next pitches have been high one ball one strike Ryles has moved over to shortstop so Hosea rebei has come out of the ballgame and Maldonado stays in right field two balls and a strike one thing that Brantley did when he pitched in Atlanta he let the guys behind the work a little bit and we kidded about him and he said well they're out there there is strike two five eleven hundred and eighty pounds signed in 1985 started his career at Fresno - to fetch and it's a full count now 302 went to Fresno with will Clark they both played together in 85 and you know what I really chuckle about on this particular road trip is that every place Clark is gone he has taken Bradley with him there's a drive down the right-field line that's going to get down and be excavation vamsee goes into second with a double that'll bring up stuff so Jeff Bradley greeted by the veteran with a double the other way vallenato was shading Dempsey into left-center field actually in the right center and MC going the other way it's a stand-up double but you're right every time Brantley has tried to pay for something wolf Clarke is basically told him to put it away yet I'm gonna take care of you just ringing a Miss strike one I bet you don't think that Brantley is paid for is maybe the morning paper huh but I like that I think that's great that will has done that I really do let those veterans take care of those kids and they may be the same age that's the veteran right eyeball on 101 but that was probably handed down from what Mike Krukow did for will Clark when will Clark cleared out was a rookie and I know that you you've told stories about how you and Duke Snider were roommates there's a drive foul along the first base side and I doubt very much if Duke Snider let you pick up the tab too often well I tell you that I was treated very well I really wasn't of course you every player that comes to the big leagues they always look back at some guys that really were very very nice tool and to show you the way and then hopefully what happens is he develop into a good ballplayer and then when you get your chance to do it for somebody else just take advantage of it the first base out ready will take care of this one and Stubbs is out number one in the inning and on the play Dempsey goes over to third so one man is God that will bring up the rightfielder Mickey Hatcher he is one for one came in the game and pinch-hit for Marshall in the fifth inning go Brantley I said now if you're smart you gotta take will to some real expensive clothing store and just look around and see how good a veteran he really is blow it out shop I know he kind of smiled I'm not going to take advantage of the good thing [Applause] Bradlee working out of the stretch an answer goes the other way and fouls it into the now almost vacant seats one thing that Brantley does is he's not afraid to challenge him he will come right at you and I realized that the score is 14 to 3 but he did that in Atlanta when the score was much closer he's not afraid to put the ball in the strike zone and but your defense work a little bit two balls in a strike [Applause] 14 to 3 Giants and spire makes a good play and we'll throw out Hatcher Dempsey will score it is now 14 to 4 but a good play by his fire see Hatcher go the other way Dempsey had to wait to make sure that spire did not catch this ball in the air spire takes it on the short hop and he retires Hatcher so two men are gone here in the seventh inning and here is the centerfielder John Shelby he is over three one ball no strikes talk a little bit about tomorrow's game Ron and will be Belcher against Donnie Robinson you had a chance to see Robinson pitch in Houston what did he pitch a game and I can tell you and he even said it he said that's the best I've ever pitched tonight he threw it one hitter and he gave up the base ship to Terry Puhl in the first inning and he and he Robinson got a glove on the ball slowed it down and a rebate couldn't throw him out [Applause] welcome to and that was the infield base hit the only hit that he gave up and he was just awesome and the guy that will be facing the Giants Belcher eating for with a 366 earned run average check swing and Shelby holds up in time and we talked at the beginning at the beginning of the game about how the opposition was hitting very poorly against Kelly downs and against Orel Hershiser positions only hitting 228 against Belcher so here's another guy on this Dodger staff that throws pretty good curve ball popped up behind home plate on the Giants side no to take care of that and he died the inning is over for the Dodgers one run on one hit nobody left we go to the eighth inning 14 two for Giants [Music] miss can you guess what kind of car this is a Honda nope how much is it it's sticker price under $13,000 I give up what is it it's a Buick Regal a Buick for under $13,000 I never thought of you work as a value fact I even thought of you it till now before you buy you better think about Buick Regal the great American value watch carefully if you live in one of these counties your auto insurance rates will go up if propositions 100 and 103 pass this November if they pass rates for most of California will go up just so rate in Los Angeles can go down props 100 and 103 can abolish rating based on a community's driving record so a rates will go up in 54 of the states 58 counties sound fair vote no on propositions 100 and 103 it used to be fish now it's seafood immediate still fish but it sure tastes good real good since the wife started shopping Safeways fish market there's a reason for that nobody sells more fresh seafood than we do we voted it fly it in truck it in every day depend on it if it's fresh and available safe ways got that Safeway service clients late at 14 to 4s we go to the eighth inning and it will be al Jenny Melvin and Williams facing the right-hander Brian Holton Brian Holton on the mound six-foot weighs 193 pounds [Applause] last year was really his rookie season first full season in the major leagues appeared in 53 games and I'll Johnny takes one lawn outside ball one now Johnny two four four in the game driven in a couple of runs and we have quite a few giant fans here this afternoon we've seen him throughout the whole series a lot of folks made the trip down to Southern California firstly then enjoyed the first two games but they like this one they've had a lot of fun today one ball and two strikes now Jenny help things along in the first inning when he drove in Iran and he also had a big RBI single in the second inning and then right after that melvin hit that three-run homer slow curveball whacked in the hold short backhanded tough play and how good he has his third hit of the game you know what is an interesting note on alt reading this year Allegretti now has 40 RBIs and he is driven in 29 of them on the road that is interesting a lot of times you can't figure out how that happens but you can see Griffin having to throw off-balance as his momentum was going towards the third-base line melvin takes strike want aldready going into that event and you were talking about it he starts out the game he's 2 for 2 you're starting to feel pretty good about that your team is winning cool so you figure hey I'm at least gonna get three strike two so he grounds out and then he hits a line drive that Hatcher makes a nice play on now you're 2 for 4 and you're starting to wonder gee now I was two for two and I'm freezing along here now and now he comes through with infield hit so it all evens out a little bit for him and he does get his three base hits Lord outside 1 2 can't tell you how many times that I was 1 for 1 in a game and end up 1 for 5 I think we've all done it get hard down the left-field line and that is hooking foul you can see a lot of the fans have left he's getting to play for the immediate family starting to look like a spring training game they're on their way to the barbecue and that's what they got to look forward to one ball and two strikes and melvin hits it well into left centerfield she'll be on the warning track leaps the third goes out ready in two second goes Melvin and Melvin with a couple of base hits today and he almost had his second home run [Applause] Bobby Melvin puts a charge into this breaking ball Shelby gets back to the fence and although it would have been a nice play I think he should have caught the ball anytime you get back there in the amount of time that Shelby has looked like he trailed the ball instead of getting back to the fence and then getting set he was going to time it here is Matt Williams and there is ball 1 and I haven't seen a fastball yet no holding still throwing the breaking stuff math 2 for 3 and he pops it up into left field and ready tagging Danny Heep is there and Al Reddy's go home [Applause] so one man has gone here their neighbor that will bring up Chris Speier who came in the ballgame that last half-inning that's not even a tough call for build pay here on no sense in a game like this risking my college ready getting hurt at home plate and I guarantee that's what he's taking up because the score is not important right now and now johnny has that bad ankle and you don't want him to be crashing into the catcher of course Matt Williams disappointed that he doesn't get an RBI and a sacrifice fly but the important thing right now is to keep your guys healthy and joints have had enough plays at home plate as it is well if they can't win with 14 runs Speier takes one just a bit outside one ball one strike while one pill toward third-base and they go across the diamond out ready scores anyway spire picks up the RBI and it is now 15 to 4 [Applause] the only thing I'm concerned about is is with all the wrongs the Giants are scoring today how many times have you seen where the next day they have a rough time scoring yeah you'd like to save them put them in a bank but you never know where they're going yeah but you never know where they're gonna show up here is Maldonado he walked his last time up and scored [Music] bending ball two balls and a strike two balls and no strikes whether Charlie Williams calling that ball high now it looked like after Dempsey had caught it he was in the strikes in which he had to remember you called the pitch where it goes by the hitter three balls and no strikes front edge of the plate run it not to be confused with the back ends on edge of the plate and there is a fastball 3 it out 17 hits in a game for the Giants and they have had fun this afternoon Maldonado bounces one foul now there's a full count 3 & 2 Animoto two base hits in his day didn't he didn't he nice man and he could come off that bench and boy could he do it 150 pinch hits man's career and I believe that that's enough a major-league record that is and of course over the other doc dugout you have Jose Morales who had a hundred and twenty three pinch-hit outside and Maldonado walks for the second straight time [Applause] now here is Donnell Dixon go ahead and regardless of what the score is is still using that breaking ball obviously that's his best pitch otherwise he wouldn't be throwing it 99% of the time but I think both the Dodgers and the Giants would like to get out of here but on the other hand you have to remember that this kid is trying to make a living and there's a ball to shortstop Griffin will go the short way and they get the force out of candy and that takes care of the Giants and they're half the inning but they come up with one more run on a couple of base hits two men are left and after seven and a half 15 two for Giants memories nothing evokes them like the house they grew up in the first stairway he climbed the first railing they peek through the first banister she floated down all part of the reason they all stayed home replacement cost guarantee exists to help rebuild your home whatever the cost right down to the spot where dad hung his hat the Allstate Home Replacement cost guarantee another reason [Music] cheat days are back that's what cheat days are back once a year for what we call your California GP leaders bring you cheat days with blow-up Arkansan every cheat vehicle in stock Jeep Cherokee cheat Comanche chief Ranger all at prices so low you won't bullied cheat days are back get amazing deals on sheep wagon a brand wegen ear every cheap vehicle is price to go that sacrifice prices we won't even mention on the air cheat days are back it's all unsafe just once a year during Jeep days only it's your California Jeep Eagle leaders where you can expect the best from the best police say he was a hit man for the New York Mafia Kevin Kelly is wanted for murder attempted murder and extortion tonight at 8:00 on channel 2 not only a September 11th baseball card book day but the Giants will host an auction featuring one-of-a-kind sports memorabilia with the proceeds benefiting the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame the auction will take place during and after the 105 Giants Astro game this is your chance to bid on professional sports collectibles so call the telephone number now for tickets to this very special day also just like to remind you tomorrow it will be Robinson going against Belcher in the final game of this series and if the chance can pull out a victory they will moved within two and a half games behind Los Angeles keep in mind that they started this road trip four and a half games back as Danny Heep will lead things off and a victory here it looks like they're gonna have one here is a pitch inside football they're gonna move to within three and a half and so they're still very very much of the picture even after dropping the first two games and the Giants pick up a game both on the Dodgers and the Astros who lost today Brown balled between first and second beyond the reaches fire so he put his second base hit of the game he'll finish this afternoon two four four brings up the third baseman Tracy Woodson Kelly down started when six innings three runs on eight hits and Jeff Bradley is now in the second inning of work Brantly a lot different than Holton Brantley will throw that fastball in there and take his chances holding on the other hand likes to use that breaking ball and then it's fouled away strike one kind of surprises me the whole will do that because I mean he's showing the Giants everything he has right now in a game like this that is a very lopsided game why would you show the opposing team everything you've got in a game like this good point [Applause] one ball one strike because when this game is over with your right the Giants hitters will have seen exactly what Holton's gonna throw them especially in situations where he has to get it out and you know that he's going to come in there with a breaking ball so even though you have a game like this there are things you can learn about the opposing team well they dug up there it is that's a little bit there it is now they got it best like the clock in San Francisco the other day the time was 995 for guys like me believe me that's tough to figure out [Laughter] they're still working on it out there forget it pick a number - to pitch [Applause] I take ya called strike three they look like they're for a second I thought maybe the scoreboard was wrong when I looked at it as Woodsen didn't want to leave the home plate area well so he strikes out that is out number one Brantley giving the Dodgers a little bit of stuff that Colton's been giving the Giants and that's that breaking ball even though the score is is lopsided as it is so here's our fatal Griffon coming the plate he is over three this afternoon he has been struggling since coming back from the DL and I know that the guys in the dugout I'm sure are screaming throw the ball straight yeah look you talk about you talk about the Dodger you throw the ball straight look at the score and there's a base hit into right field [Applause] so I'll Fraser Griffith here's one for today [Applause] and Brian Holton the pitcher will be coming to the plate and the reason he's coming to the plate and batting is because that Lasorda doesn't want to use another pitcher he's gonna make him go out there that next in it definitely want to save your staff in a game like this the Dodgers like the Giants do not have a whole lot of off days coming up big chopper to spire could be - there's one on to first double play that takes care of the Dodgers no runs on two hits and Manas left we go to the ninth inning where the Giants leading 15 to 4 [Music] more small businesses startup in California than anywhere else the smart ones will choose business phone system is flexible enough to grow with them well your business plan looks good for extending startup capital you won't regret it I know in oh one last thing have you thought about a phone system not yet well take some advice call Pacific Bell if your business grows the way we think it will you're gonna need a system that can grow - how can I know what I'll need don't worry you can start small and add lines as you need them and it's in their office so you don't have to buy all that expensive hardware good I've got better plans for this money [Music] our phone system is designed to help a small business succeed your best call is to call on us Pacific Bell you know when I played football people said I was one tough player but that not only outmuscle the other guy uh outsmarted him I used my head and a guy like me enjoys drinking Miller Lite could lie still less filling beer that tastes great but the best thing about Miller Lite is that it shows a tough guy like me can still use his head well how's that Gary you hit it right on the head there's only one light beer Miller Lite just reminder for you it is not on your regular televised scheduled but tomorrow night's game from Dodger Stadium will be televised and you can see it on most of these stations and it will be Robinson going against Belcher a 7:30 starting time and we certainly hope you join us at that time victory as we said a few moments ago by the Giants could move them to within two and a half games so it should be a very interesting matchup final game of this four-game series Dodgers and the Giants fifteen to four Giants all over the Dodgers this afternoon and here in the inning it will be Royals followed by a young blood and then Mitchell Brian Holden back to the mound as you can see at the beginning of this game they had a crowd of 46,000 916 and not very many of them left in an idea with centerfield looks like to Shelby yeah there is ball wot Ron talked about those off days the Giants will have one off day in 27 days and that off day will be spent on our 25th on and off on an airplane to New York two balls and no strikes and the next off day for the Dodgers is the same day so I guess the point we're making is is you have to try to save your staff Holton's gonna stay out there regardless of how many runs he gives up doing to it Lasorda does not want to have to use somebody else and as his Roger Craig who's going to leave it up to Brantley and there's a base hit into left field [Applause] riled his 1 through 3 with an RBI and this guy's did a good job he has played second base he has played shortstop he has played third and he's had quite a few key hits for the Giants this year as he has and there's that ball down that Ernest Ryles likes to hit here's Youngblood he's 1 for 2 he drove in a run his last time up and that is high ball one it's also nice for guys like will Clarke and Robbie Thompson now they can sit back and they can pull for the guys that don't get a chance to play too much you know that's that's an interesting point that you that you bring up because all year long you have the guys that are in the lineup right now pulling for the Thompsons in the Clarkes and what-have-you there's one hit off the hands to shortstop and they're only going though they got both on I didn't think there for a second but they turn the double play six four three his ball has not hit very hard Krypton he goes to Anderson Ryles goes in pretty hard and there's the throw to burst and it is in time to get young black so the Dodgers turned a double-play and then we'll bring up Mitchell I think that Bank a little bring up Bradley and he looks one into left-center field and that's gonna get in baseship for Bradley [Applause] and that is his first major league base it and so they're going to take the ball out and they put it up on the message board and left field Jef Bradley's first major league yet and it falls just beyond the reach of Danny Heep I'm in the sorta would like to go home forget about this one and start worrying about tomorrow's game here's Allegretti and there's strike one but just getting back to the point we were talking about the guys on the bench pulling for the Clarkes and and the Thompsons and all it is really a good thing to have these guys now come back and pull for these guys doesn't happen very often but when the game is over I guarantee a guy like Robbie or a guy like Clarke is gonna go over to hey nice going congratulations I know I appreciate it when you know the regular players that got a chance to play all the time and you could see them sitting in the dugout guys that wouldn't rush in and take a shower you know they'd stay on the bench and pulled for you three balls one strike anytime you get a chance to play a little bit it makes you feel like you're more part of what's happening you can sit and cheer and wave the pom-poms in the dugout but you like to get out there and contribute and even though as we mentioned this game is out of hand to centerfield and now Guddi has another base hit his fourth of the afternoon [Applause] so I'm ready with a big day going for 4-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored and has eight RBIs on this road trip now aldready not stopping with three base hits lines this one in the center field and anytime you get four hits in a game you can be sure that that average is going to go up Giants now with 20 hits in the game and that ties a season high when he had when they had 20 hits against st. Louis that was that 21 to 2 game at Candlestick so they have tied a season-high in hits for a single game Brantley's also first at-bat in the big leagues - and Mississippi State can hit popped up behind home plate [Applause] and Dempsey takes care of Melvin and for the Giants in their half of the inning no runs on a couple of hits and after eight and a half innings of play store remains 15 - for joining tires man what the right set can do for your car [Music] [Music] they'll fill your car back up with performance da radios from BF Goodrich we make your car perform proposition 100 the good driver initiative it's written by consumers and it guarantees an immediate 20% reduction in your auto insurance if you're a good driver know what makes a good driver your driving record not where you live not what kind of car you drive but how you drive I like that proposition 100 the good driver initiative that has a nice ring to it all you need to know about great selection and low prices is here inside the newest circular from True Value Hardware stores check out the carnival of value circular where the master mechanic 23 feet standard or metric socket set is just $12.99 and the Wagner Handy duty power sprayers just 4988 then get true test weather all acrylic latex house paints starting at just 1098 a gallon from participating True Value Hardware stores and home centers well we headed to the bottom of the ninth inning and right now the Giants very much in command they are leading by a score of 15 to 4 Jeff Bradley enjoying this game and even though it is a lopsided game right now the young man out of the mound his heart is pumping pretty good this is his third major league appearance his first major league at-bat and he gets a face knock and here in the inning yes he is facing Anderson and there a strike walk plenty of money in his wallet a base hit into right field [Applause] and coming to the plate now is dempsey the cup sorry tell her how many games that he saw on television from Dodger Stadium and all of a sudden here he is he's in the ball game and he's pitching against the Dodgers then he's finishing the game yeah and that's true you do you do think about those things when you walk into a major league park for the first time and of course you put that out of your mind once you start doing your job but I'm sure that it was a big thrill for him to walk into this place as it was for me the first time I walked into Yankee Stadium twice you mentioned that because I got the same feeling I couldn't wait to go to the ballpark and just walk in that thing and just take a look at it but you would you see it on television and you have an idea what it looks like but it never looks the same when you get into that Park two balls in a strike look at that hey Dad where we gonna go for dinner pretty nice Sunday afternoon and jarric still working on that gum ending oh yeah - and - now Mike lives around the area so he'll drive home and spend a nice night with the family Mike of course has got three other ones at home Jarek being the oldest he gets all the privileges at this point you know that's that's it that's a great shot right there dad having a chance to bring his son to the ballpark put him in the dugout popped up foul lemon go back in the seats count remains two and two two dumps Jerry could go home and his friends will say what'd you do they high said I did nothing I just set the dugout yeah I got 14 runs for the Giants today - to fetch down the way again I suppose that that your kids were around that age when you play yep no chance there were some Rugrats around the clubhouse now and then whoo that just missed full count three balls and two strikes I know one of the things that my kids enjoyed doing they would go over to the visiting Clubhouse and it helped the clubhouse gal there and they'd clean the shoes and all that other stuff they loved that oh sure hey they're in the big leagues 3 2 pitch swung on track 3 and Dempsey is out number one here in the night [Applause] second strikeout recorded for Bradford just threw the fastball by Brantley fastball little bit up that belt high and Dempsey looking like he's trying to had a home run to his total swings right through it here is Franklin Stubbs he's over while he bounced out to first base his only time up and he pops one up foul behind home I'm sure tomorrow we'll have another full house here at Dodger Stadium we'll have a good crowd [Applause] breaking ball over for strike two and it won't be long where the last three games of the season for the Giants will be right here at Dodger Stadium remains to be seen how important those three games are going to be but I have a feeling that they're gonna have a little bit of bearing on what's gonna happen a lot of games in between now and then a tapper along the third-base side tough play bratli over bare hands and he gets stuck pull good play by Bradley he got off the mound and hurry branly pounced on that dribbler he goes after it like it's a nothing to nothing game and that's the way he should approach it see he bare hands and that's the only chance he's got and he gets Stubbs by about a step blow away plants his feet he made that play by getting his body in position before you even feel here is Hatcher and he fouls went off in the hand of Melvin and Melvin same you know I've gone almost for hours and I haven't gotten nipped and the last guy up in this game he's got a falling off and hit me right on the knuckles jawohl ah whatever happened to two and a half hour [Applause] this series outside ball one strike [Applause] ground ball back up the middle Ryles behind the bat goes to first and it's in time and that takes care of Hatcher and the game is over and the Giants win this game by a score of 15 to 4 man up there on the field Giants can vets letting themselves Brantly going three innings in relief as down picks up the victory and all the other players going out and congratulating their teammates as the Giants have captured Game three of this series and with this victory today the Giants now are only three and a half games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers final score 15 to 4 the final score here
