what's up america this is kim with chiaga farms academy thanks for watching today we're going to talk about mistakes the new shooters [Applause] [Music] make before we get started we also just added some more classes so we're starting to ramp up for the spring in the summer it doesn't look like it today it's kind of cold but it is getting warmer here in ohio so we have defensive pistol one and two and we even have ammo packages available for that one and we also have basic rifle coming up [Music] we're seeing a huge influx of new shooters so i thought we'd go over some things that we often see them make a mistake with so number one is making sure that you're loading it by yourself especially we see this with spouses they bring them to the range and then they load it for them and they hand them out completely loaded and ready to go gun and they don't know how to do it themselves so make sure that they can do it so if you're a new shooter make sure you can do it yourself one little trick i'll show you is that so you make sure you actually load the round properly is that on a magazine it's shaped just like the round one if you look on the bottom so there's a flat side and a round side so that's how you're going to know if you're loading it correctly when you're loading the magazine you're going to notice that there's a lip right here so unlike a rifle round where you can just stick it right down you have to go in front of the the lip and press this plastic follower down and then you can insert the round so i like to do it like this i'm pushing down and pushing back so now it's in there are magazine loaders that do make it easier but it's important that you can at least do it on your own if you had to another mistake we see new shooters make is they want to treat this like it's a baby kitten and they want to be very gentle with it but doing that you're actually going to cause a lot more issues the gun is meant to function a certain way so when you're for example seating the magazine you want to make sure you do it nice and firm you don't want to just lightly tap it in because it might not seat all the way are they they they gently push it in and they're tapping it several times don't get used to doing that you're just creating a bad habit just do it once nice and firm the other time people want to be too gentle with it is when they're um racking the slide and what we we say they like to ride the slide that's the way to put it so what they're doing i'm going to show you the power stroke method so you can see it there are other ways to rack a slide that we prefer but just so you can see what we're doing here so what they do is they they grab the slide and they ride it back real slow and sometimes it loads correctly but a lot of times it'll cause issues and it won't load correctly into the chamber so i'm going to show you the same way with the power stroke but doing it correct we want to punch it forward and let it go and it doesn't matter if you're loading the gun with the slide forward or the slide back either way it's going to load the same way and if you're going to buy a gun with a safety make sure that you're engaging it all the time this is really important when you're going to the range i know a lot of people want to just shoot as many rounds as they can they think that that's what the point of it is it's actually about repetition so practicing unloading and reloading so don't load your magazine all up load just a few rounds at a time so you get that repetition and also if you do have a safety like i was saying make sure you're engaging that all the time and when i'm talking about safeties all guns have safeties i'm talking about a safety lever this one does not have one and i know it may be a little too late but if you can don't go for the little gun everyone wants to go for this i think it's going to be easier to shoot if you have the ability or if you're going to teach someone go with a larger gun they're going to have a much better experience i know this one looks less intimidating but trust me they're going to have a better shooting experience with a larger gun so with a larger gun you're going to have more mass you're going to have less felt recoil yes the same amount of recoil but because the mass is larger you're going to have less felt recoil you also have a better uh bigger grip surface so you're going to have to be able to grip the gun much better the next thing you want to focus on is making sure you have a nice grip and you are really holding on tight to that gun because what we don't want to do is that when we extend out we don't want to have a poor grip where we have all these angles and then we're lymph resting it causing the gun to go up and down that will also cause it to malfunction when you're limp resting it what happens is normally when you're holding on it nice and tight the slide can reciprocate and go back and forth like this but let's say i loosen it now i it it's not able to go all the way back and so you're going to have issues a common injury you'll see on the range is called slide bite and that happens when you put your hand in a revolver's grip crossing your thumbs here in the back this light is reciprocating the whole time and that is where you get that slide bite it looks like literally like a vampire back of your hand and you bleed a lot you're not gonna get seriously injured but it is not fun another thing we see not only new shooters do but even people have been shooting for quite a while and that's whole over it's when you're missing and so you're over you're compensating for that so let's say you're shooting low left you're going to aim a high right so that you hit the target and that's not fixing the problem that's just putting a band-aid on it we want you to shoot consistently so even if you're not hitting the target but you're shooting consistently and you're shooting in the same area then you can fix things and tweak them and figure out what's wrong but if you're constantly trying to change and compensate for when you miss it's hard to figure out what's going wrong and how to fix it also going with aiming you want to make sure that you're looking through the back sides to the front site and that's where you're going to be focusing a lot of people will look over the site so they'll look over the rear sights to look at the front one and you'll end up with a higher shot normally so you what you want to do is i'll do this a lot of time with new shooters i'll actually cover this back sight like this so that they have to look through that little box to see the front sight we want to have it at our line of sight obviously and we're looking through the rear sights to the front side and that's where my main focus is so if i was looking over it would look like this i'm looking now i'm bringing it up and i'm looking through the back sides to the front like i said if someone was to take something and cover this up i would be looking through that little box my last little tip is making sure that you don't try to over extend your training so when you're first starting we do a lot of new shooter lessons i get them all the time especially new women and normally they're only an hour to 90 minutes and that's with me going over everything and us doing live fire so you know go out and shoot and have fun but when you start getting tired or you're fatigued and you want to leave on a good note so just stay until you had a great time and then go back at it again i hope you guys enjoyed this
