a few years ago I was working on a 3d scene that featured a bridge I'd modeled everything got the lighting right and the last thing I needed was the road texture but that's when I realized a problem you see in real life the roads that we drive on aren't perfect they've got cracks patches repairs tire marks rubbish among other things yet all the textures I could find online look like this squeaky clean and frankly unrealistic now sure you could try and combine a separate crack decal but that comes with the added headache of matching the rest of the road so it looks consistent making sure that it tiles and of course regenerating all your material maps for something that's so common in real life I was surprised that they just wasn't an easy way to realistically make roads in 3d so this month a polygon we made it out focus determined to find a solution so that 3d artist can finally have realistic roads we first inspected several roads up close where we realize that photographed textures just wouldn't allow you to accurately capture all the variations in height and roughness so we created each element digitally which while it takes longer allows you to create far more accurate maps we also discovered that roads aged fairly predictably they start out brand new and gather cracks repairs and patches for more they age so we created the full range of roads that you might need as an artist brand new moderately aged all the way to fully damaged and there's three variations for each type of Road and so that you can use them for all types of scenes there's a four-lane version for highways a two-lane version for streets and no lane markings for single roads or back alleys plus you've also got the freedom to build your own road from scratch if you want to as we provided each individual element raw asphalt painted lines and road symbols chewing gum eaves asphalt repair patches as well as manhole covers and grapes so for example adding leaves to a road no longer needs to be a fiddly affair just combine them in your 3d software of choice and it's done and of course it wouldn't be a road without a sidewalk to match so we've also included a new series of photoscan sidewalks we captured the most common sidewalks and pathways baked their detail and made them seamless so all you need to do is apply material and you'll have realistic sidewalks to match your roads this collection of textures took a massive 450 man-hours to create which may sound excessive but we wanted to produce the best selection of Street textures available so that you can get better renders instantly our full library now includes marble tiles wood photoscan grounds imperfections HD arts and much much more so join polygon today to get access to the industry standard library that's always growing
