welcome back to the move before race guys and today we're looking at the icon of audi sport and it is of course the infamous audi rs6 event it's such an icon for audi that even people who only know about the r8 supercar still know about the rs6 estate and how brutal it is i can't tell you the amount of conversations i've had where i've rocked up in a pretty amazing car and the person at the underside has been core your amg is lovely mate but i'll take the rs6 over me on misses bro i love your turbo s in it but i tell you what the rs6 would smoke it in it so even though i've never had this car on my channel it's been a never-ending battle for me to try and justify why this isn't better than everything else i've driven so today why the hell don't we find out and we're going to do that of course in the old rbr style of checking out the full history of this vehicle leading up to now seeing what the underpinnings are and how they've changed and then answering some questions on the drive namely undoubtedly this is the most brutal looking estate out there but can it match the brutal rivals from amg and m and indeed a rival from its own family in the brilliant rs4 so today let's see if the rs6 lives up to the hype [Applause] so guys the rs6 it's a modern day automotive icon but it's one of the youngest automotive icons only having started back in 2002 compared to stuff like 911 which has been around for so long or something like the m3 or the m5 this has made an impact in a very short amount of time and we have to kind of understand why that's happened now audi sport has a brand itself and the rs models all began with a very fast and unique estate and that was the audi 80 rs2 now do those wheels look familiar they should because they are of course from porsche and that's no coincidence because this car was built in partnership with porsche at the zuffenhausen plant no less that was done after the mercedes 500 e-stop production there now porsche took what was audi's most powerful five-cylinder engine at that time and tuned it to produce even more power we had brakes from porsche we had sport suspension and you will see the car littered with porsche badges hidden here and there as well and this car was so quick for its time that it was recorded by uk mag autocar as having done zero to 30 miles per hour quicker than a mclaren f1 so like with all the great automotive icons it began things with a bank but the first rs6 as i said came in 2002 in the c5 model now this had an engine that was a v8 built in partnership with uk engine builder cosworth and it had 444 brake horsepower so it was quite an impressive and unique thing but much more of a wolf in sheep's clothing compared to our car today with the very sleeper looks there was also a sedan and then later a plus version after this though came the headliner this was the audi rs6 c6 and why was it a headliner because it had a v10 straight out of the lamborghini gallardo that's right now this i i think this is the one that really for us modern guys put the car on the map it had almost as much horsepower as our car today does with 572 brake horsepower the engine although shared with the lamborghini had 400 different parts and no less than seven radiators to cool the damn thing down and as with previous versions we had a sedan and a plus version going out but this again it was a statement you could have a family wagon with the engine of a bloody lamborghini how awesome was that so the rs6 the fastest car in its class although the heaviest as well i think weighing even more than our car today probably mostly because of that engine after this came the rs6 c7 so our predecessor to the car today it loses the two cylinders that made the previous car so iconic but it does it by reducing the weight and even though it's got 20 horsepower less it feels even quicker it sounds pretty damn good and i think this is going to be a sweet spot in the history of the rs6 because it's going to have great handling dynamics versus the previous car while still having a great v8 sound not hindered by the opf of today's car so today's car the c8 the most beastly looking rs6 ever and really design is the first thing that we have to talk about and i want to do that by showing you the completely standard asics event first now when we switch it to the rs6 you can see that the only things that are shared with that car are the front doors the rear boot lid and that is it everything else is rs specific on this car and the car is so much better for it because every part of the body is thus flared and widened to make it the most aggressive looking estate in the world we also have the lights from the a7 so you haven't got a6 lights and these are the led matrix laser lights that are so famous by audi only available then in the rs6 for the a6 family the width of the car is increased by 1.6 inches that's how much more flared this thing is let's switch back again to the normal one and come back and you see just how aggressive it looks of course you've got a gigantic grille on the front this has all been blacked out at factory that's something i'm not a fan of i would love to see the audi rings because from far away you can't really tell what's behind you but you have got the three slats above it as you find in the r8 and the original quattro racing car that we always link back to you've got some big side air intakes here where we've got the carbon package which looks really really quite nice as well the bonnet again really sculpted very very audi you've got some of the nicest extended side sills that i've ever seen these are again finished in carbon 22 inch wheel option yes they are the biggest in class by quite a big margin but then i think the bit i love the most has to be the rear and it's because of the the wide arches and the extended diffuser the huge tailpipes on the rear as well it just looks an absolute beast and it's only rivaled the e63s wagon doesn't have it has a standard body shared with you know an e220 diesel and that's what really makes the rs6 stand out and it's one of the main selling points as you'll find as we go along the review that the design cannot be touched at all everything else looks soft compared to this car now the engine as we said it's shared with the predecessor but this one has got larger twin scroll turbos and they produce a higher boost pressure thus we've got more horsepower 40 brake horsepower more 592 brake horsepower 800 newton meters of torque and a 0 to 60 of 3.6 seconds making this quite formidable all of that goes to a permanent audi quattro system which by default is 60 40 but it can go as much as 70 percent to the front and 85 to the rear so not as clever as something as you'd find in the m5 or the e63 with the drift mode the entire car also sits on a mild hybrid 48 volt system which helps with energy recuperation etc but versus the rivals i just want to look at those performance figures for a second now 592 brake horsepower it's less than the e63s which i think is the main rival of this car but this car is also 80 kg heavier so they're not balancing the scales and it shows in the 0 to 60 figure whereas the e63 sits at 3.2 seconds as does the m5 this sits at 3.6 so it's heavier and it's slower but i don't get this because the c6 with the v10 from the lambo had 572 brake horsepower and that was way back in what 2008 or something so why they dropped the ball on this i don't know i have to see how it behaves on the road because on paper it just seems like it's generations behind on power as far as the chassis we've got audi air suspension as the standard option or you can go for audi sport suspension with dynamic ride control as the rs6 is made so famous we've got three camber suspension on this which is non-electrically operated to allow the car to deal with road conditions very quickly and be more dynamic and one thing that this has is an option the rivals simply do not is rear wheel steering so it's not on the e63 or the m5 so that's a cool option to have as well and of course this car is now finally available in the usa yay so guys loads to unpack in terms of whether this car is going to be as impressive on the road as the weight it looks i already have driven the rs4 and i love that car to pieces so it's got its work cut out for it and because i've had so much extended time in both the m5 and the e63 i think i'm best placed to tell you guys what this car is like in reality before that a quick look inside a bit of the sound of the new rs6 and then we'll go out on the run so guys the interior of the rs6 just like the outside is something that's a standout feature for me because the design is something that is very uniquely audi and it's really well executed and the materials and the build quality like the lack of squeaking versus something like the e-class is really really high one thing i don't really like though is wait for it [Music] it's the welcome theme from windows 95 or something [Music] i appreciate only you 90s kids would understand that but what the heck is that all about though it's becoming more of a trend in the auto industry the s-class had something similar as well i can replicate it so i couldn't show you but hey-ho this is the way of things now but yeah a really characterful audi interior in this and i want to just start with those basics if you even start from the door card you'll see that metal trim that goes across it it's really beautifully sculptured and that flows straight into the front dashboard everything interconnecting particularly when the door card is closed you can see just how tight the gaps are and how well everything fits and is designed together like the little chrome strips and the ambient lighting tiny thin strips that go across it everything linking together perfectly and it comes into this dashboard which again it's substantial in its design unlike someone like mercedes who are cutting back on their lines and their sculptures particularly in something like the s-class which i found the front dash to be just too boring on this you've got a really significant piece here you've got ambient lighting within the quattro logo which i absolutely love again a thin ambient lighting strip within your center console etc then you've got your trim above here which is uncommon but it's nice and your dashboard although it is substantial it's actually knocked back so you actually don't lose vision at all it doesn't feel like you're being overpowered by it the other thing i like is that the vent structure hasn't got the straight horizontal lines like in the rs4 where it all seems like one gigantic event it's instead it's separated and i think it's better for it one thing that so many people know about the audis and love about the interiors even the layman is if you've got bang olufsen how the speakers then rise to occasion and it's a cool little thing that i like within this of course the seats are brilliant typical rs seats really comfortable and that plays into this car's main character of being a really fast and great gt that we'll get onto later you've got loads and loads of room in the rear again very very comfortable alongside the great suspension that this car has and absolute shed loads of space in the rear as much as any suv i've ever seen guys you need to stop buying these big roly-poly useless suvs america i'm talking to you buy a proper fast wagon you will thank me for it later you've got to support these manufacturers who are bringing these type of cars that you haven't had in the us before now of course mmi system we've got two big touch screens here and as i keep repeating particularly on instagram this is gonna be the way of the future the s-class got a lot of stick for having a tesla-like screen whereas the application of the ui inside was completely different to tesla again audi have essentially the same thing here but with two separate screens this is the way that most manufacturers i think are going to go like mercedes unfortunately there's no physical toggle to control the screen so everything is touch screen i'm not a fan of that but the ui is well made in the sense that i can find everything i want very quickly for example we're going to audi drive select it's got exactly what you expect it's got drive select it's got rs modes one and two that you can configure in there yourself you go into rs monitor it is again what you expect it's the g values and the other bits to do with driving dynamics i want to find ambient lighting simply go into light and vision and i can change the background lighting so everything is done in a very user-centric way your second screen at the bottom again it's easy to use you can actually use swiping gestures like i am on the temperature here you can bring in shortcuts like your favorite radio station a pretty unique application in audi and the way that they've designed the ui in it suits the rest of the interior as well now one thing that i think lets that down is the fact that you only have two designs in audi's virtual cockpit i think they need to expand that now yes you get two views within those two designs but they need to keep up with people like mercedes who have taken it to the next level when you have so much choice in those cars i want to see more choice that's audi sport-like design within the driver zone because the steering wheel is brilliant it's nice and thin the rs steering wheel is one of the best on the market shout out to the actual shift paddle which are proper metal now unlike the horrible plastic things in the r8 this whole experience here is fantastic it's really really driver centric and it really works and again it's a standout feature of this car that makes me love driving it as a driver so the interior quality nothing but the panamera is going to match it but now let's listen to the sand which sadly you'll find a tad disappointing now the startup is nice but when you rev it and i'll put into rs2 so there's no doubt as to which mode i'm [Music] in [Music] it's got a soft limiter right above 3000 revs which doesn't allow you to get any sound so really we have to drive it and see what it sounds like when we're driving it in anger in rs2 mode let's go and do that now so guys driving the icon that is the brand new rs6 it's just as fast as you think it is i'm in rs1 mode at the moment the gearbox is in s as well so we're on full attack power and as you can imagine it is an absolute monster on the straights we've got rear wheel steer as well and we're taking this corner at 100 miles per hour and the car's just not sweating it again on our closed track here 80 miles per hour put your foot down bounds and bounds of power available i often discuss how all these cars they have too much power almost of course some of it is to negate the weight aspect but having 600 brake horsepower in a daily car is really ridiculous and you can't use a lot of it on the road which is why my argument about this car not having as much as its competitors or not having the incremental increase versus the old rs6 doesn't really hold as much water because i'm kind of contradicting myself and really when you're driving it fast you do not at any stage feel that you need more power and it's absolutely the case with the rs6 the faster you go the more those valves open you actually start to hear some of the v8 because sound is a bit of an issue in this car like if i slow it down and i'm comparing it to its main rival like the e63 you know what the e63 sounds like you like come off the revs you get pops and bangs the v8 rev itself is quite deep and heavy whereas this v8 in practice sounds a lot more similar to the rs4 six cylinder and what i'm basically trying to say is you're not hearing enough of the v8 there's downshifting all the way to redline there's nothing there as you begin to get faster you hear at least more of the revs you get a bit of a fart at the end of the red range as well but to me i felt the rs6 was always so much about sound particularly in the previous generations with the v10 and when the twin turbo v8 first came this one is really muted in that regard and having driven the r8 v10 facelift and the new rs4 the sound profile of both pretty similar to this so i wonder whether it's actually something that audi are doing on purpose because when you look at the panamera turbo s that we drove that's essentially of the same engine it sounded a lot better when you look at the e63 and amg's efforts with v8s even in the modern day they're pretty bombastic so i wonder whether audi are trying to remain more clinical which is pretty similar to their design ethos as well but yeah speed it's got bounds and bounds of it forget the fact that it hasn't got as much horsepower as the others in real world driving you're never ever going to notice now in terms of handling that steering feel that we were discussing it kind of translates into your tiny movement in and out of a corner as well which is essentially what we call numbness the steering feels quite light and you can't really tell the little movements that you're trying to pick up as a driver particularly going into a corner i think is troublesome that being said it definitely sharpens up a whole lot more when you're in the rs mode and once you get in the rhythm of things then you kind of understand what the front end is doing and you build confidence you can drive a little bit faster but then comes in the aspect of the huge weight of this car and again if you're careful as to when you're braking when you're applying the power and again it's getting used to the weight of the car and when that limit of understeer begins to come in then again you can get into a flow of managing the weight and no doubt audi's dynamic ride control really helps in this regard and it's really pleasing then that when you're really putting the power down the valves begin to open the exhaust and the car certainly outside sounds a lot better than it does when you're just driving normally which is nice there is some reward to driving a lot faster than the rs6 you get more sound out of this exhaust i love to hear this call with a modified setup from someone like akrapovic we know it's a great v8 we know it sounds great in the panamera turbo s and the cayenne gts there's no reason why we can't get this car to sound more of a beast we should just be grateful that we actually have a va in it to tinker around with for my american viewership i must note that with regards to the sound you're not going to have the issues that we do in the eu because our ecu's and exhaust systems are set up in a different way for our regulations so like with most american cars it's way more likely that your cars are gonna sound a damn sight better than ours the rear wheel steer i like it in these longer and bigger cars because they really need it to kind of make the car seem smaller in corners and i must say particularly with regards to a car like the rs6 where the steering feel is a little bit numbed that room steer helps kind of even things out for me i know it's not for a lot of people but i'm definitely an advocate of it in these much larger cars so handling is a mixed bag definitely i would say the e63 and the m5 are better handling cars than this and of course the panamera turbo really proving itself recently in its facelift but i think where this car surprisingly evens things out a little bit is how good it is as a daily driver despite being on 22-inch wheels it's a really comfortable car i'm gonna knock it back now for a second into automatic mode and the suspension that audi have here is just really well equipped at dealing with bumps and what it does it turns this car into something that's supremely capable in crunching miles in a more comfortable way than its other rivals will the gt ability of this car has really surprised me i think that alongside the huge reserves of speed and power that it has and undoubtedly the best looks outside and a fantastic interior inside all these things together come together to make a car that i don't think i was expecting i had this idea of an rs6 as a really loud and brutal audi sport car that was more ruffian and more sports car than it was a state what i found is quite the opposite actually it's very refined in terms of its sound yes it still has bags of power and it looks a brute but genuinely it's a really comfortable audi amount that can do that silly speed thing whenever you need it to does it live up to the hype then for me not really because i was expecting something a lot more brutal i would love to drive one as i said with an upgraded exhaust though that won't fix the issues that i have with the numbness of the steering i suspect it will add that much more emotion to make me love this car but truly if it was my own money i was spending i would go for the new rs4 because it feels so much more dynamic on the road it feels as fast to me the styling very very similar and indeed the interior quality of that car is fantastic so i can't really see a reason that i personally would go for the rs6 i think the rs4 really ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people but of course this is that much more brutal looking it has that much more power and for some people that will be enough so guys i hope you enjoyed this full review of the brand new rs6 and the history of the car if you did please do like subscribe hit the bell icon thanks again for watching and i'll see you again soon
