Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck: THE EXPADA | BLEACH: Character Analysis

in this video i'm analyzing the fan favorite character naliel she is a former espada who had a position taken from her when she was attacked by neutral and transformed into her child form while in her child form she is wide-eyed emotional irritating and very outspoken however in her adult form she is intelligent well composed and a dependable companion to have in battle i want to break down nell's character through analyzing her different appearances within the series in order to understand her motives as a character her relationships and how the events in the story shape her personality and journey as a character [Music] nell first appears in chapter 245 of the manga and in episode 145 of the anime her most distinctive feature is a green hair and as her child her large hazel eyes she has two red coloured lines under her eyes which go across her face the remains of a hollow mask are a skull which rests on top of her head in a child form it appears to be more rounded and less intimidating in an adult former hollow mask is more angular with the horns on the mask being longer and more rounded while in her child form she has a scar which runs down her forehead to her nose this was given to her by neutral like i mentioned before she is very innocent naive and annoying as a child she forms a bond with ichigo who she becomes dependent upon and follows him to lost no chess to save orohime even after she transforms into her adult form she still has a innocent childlike attachment towards ichigo and excitedly hugs him she speaks with a lisp in a child form and is just overly cute and not intimidating which is strange as nell and her two brothers stand out amongst the other hollows because they are friendly and far from being evil like regular hollows while in her adult form neliel is easily the most attractive female within bleach her personality is very different to a child form she comes across as smart well-composed and sophisticated she is very strong revealing a warrior hidden within that wide-eyed innocent child who cries whenever ichigo was hurt while she was an espada she avoided battling and looked down upon neutral for his lack of purpose when it came to picking fights with her she wasn't the type to kill or fight senselessly she believes that a valid reason is required to engage an opponent in battle and would rather not kill an adversary if she does not need to in a child form she is referred to as nell while in her adult form she is called neliel the reason that she is no longer a spider and has been turned into a child is explained in her past which i'll briefly cover in order to understand the mystery behind her odd behaviors and contrasting child and adult forms nell's backstory is revealed to us between chapters 312-313 and chapters 294-295 before haribel was the third ranked espada nel yell held that position in chapter 294 we see nell yet again defeat neutral she plans to leave for lunch but nigeria demands that she kills him as they are in a duel however she scolds him for using a demanding tone with her it appears as though she does not deem him to be worthy to speak to her in such a manner she refuses to kill him without a proper reason she describes that as in a run card they have developed rationale and reasoning she does not want to regress to behaviors found typical in a mindless hollow so she prides herself in her principles and thus refuses to kill neutral without a valid reason why neutral states that he has a reason to kill her because he doesn't like her but she just downplays his reason by describing it as an instinct calling him a beastly animal after defeating him she ridicules him further by telling him that she does not recognize him as a warrior nel yell does not want to kill him senselessly and thus be burdened with his life and her conscience her words and actions infuriate neutral so much so that he devises a plan to ambush her he successfully attacks her and throws her out of los noches due to her injuries riatu begins to leak out of the wound that neutrality inflicts on her holo mask this causes her to regress into a child form as the loss of riatsu makes her spiritual body shrink in size the only real battle that nell has in the series is against noitera after he breaks ichigo's wrist it overwhelms nell which causes her to transform into her adult form in order to help ichigo her former frachion immediately sense the rise of her spiritual pressure and realize that master nell has returned she retrieves ichigo from nijra's possession and protects him she thanks him as she states that it was because of ichigo who brought her this far that she was able to return to her original form she decides to repay ichigo by fighting neutral for him ichigo doubts her abilities as we see her espada number on her back ichigo then realizes that nell was indeed a former spada she immediately cuts neutral across the chest before he even has the chance to evade her attack despite having been away for so long it appears that nell still has the upper hand against him she even absorbs and sends back a cerro that neutral fires at her he emerges after the attack with his right arm charred by this arrow he comments on nel's surprise as he reminds her that she has been away for a long time and the espada are no longer at the same level of strength as before nigeria desires to defeat nell and prove that the espada number on her back no longer holds any meaning she appears to not waver in a resolve as our eyes look determined to face off against him they continue battling as noitara remembers her from his past and still feels annoyed at her stating that she has not changed a bit she is exactly the same as before referring to her time as the third ranked espada many fans of the series comment on how neutral was a misogynistic villain rightfully hating the character that kubo did well to portray as an inferior jealous villain however very little is stated on neliel's actions which further fueled neutra's toxic mentality in the past she behaves questionably and does a lot to reinforce neutralized feelings of inferiority we learn more about the interesting dynamic between these two characters in two separate flashbacks which run between chapters 312 and 313. during the flashback in chapter 313 neliel tells him that she sees no purpose in his battles he tells her that his purpose is to fight but she still does not understand who reveals that he desires to die in battle she describes this as an intoxicating desire the two of them have a deep conversation as she tries to understand him he reveals to her a lot about his character opening himself up to her showing his vulnerability as he explains why he battles and what he desires from his life in the previous chapter 312 we see another flashback where neliel appears to be following him and judging him for killing a colony of hollows she comments that his actions prove that he is a child despite being an espada imagine having someone follow you for whatever reason and constantly question and disapprove of your actions it would be enough to cause anyone to feel anger and frustration we learned that nel yell does this due to a very egotistical reason neutral tells it that he does not like her and he knows that she is aware of this so why is it that she continues to follow him around she looks at him with an air of superiority and states that it is because he is weaker than her from my interpretation of this scene it must make her feel better about herself and feel reassured of her ranking as the third ranked espada through observing a lower ranked sparta and seeing the difference between their strength and abilities it is no surprise that neutral ends up doing what he does and you could even say that neliel deserved it as she was constantly being condescending and patronizing towards him angering neutral and making him feel inferior instead of helping him or being a kind-hearted person she instead pities his weakness and follows him around to feel better about herself back in the present timeline nytra asks neliel if she remembers when she called him a wild beast who was not worth killing he asks her how does it feel now to be killed by a beast as he gloats about how he has become stronger than before but nelyel releases her zombucto revealing her resurrection taking the form of a centaur with a lancer she easily overwhelms noitera telling him that it is over but reassuring him that she won't kill him but before she can do anything she reverts back into a charred form i talk more about nel yeah's relationship with nitra in my neutral character analysis definitely check that video out too in order to further understand the dynamics of their relationship especially if you want to understand their backstory from nigeria's perspective nell also has a close bond with ichigo who she follows after their first encounter at the beginning of the huikomundo arc he first assumes that she is a human child being chased by three hollows but it appears that nell was playing a game with them she introduces herself to ichigo and reveals that she has two brothers called pashe and dondochaka who we later learned were her former fraschion prior to battling neutral nell appears to have lost her memories as an espada and her past life after neutral's attack which caused her to turn into a child her former freshyone protect nell and try not to remind her of the past by saying that they found her lying around and decided to become her brothers nell and her brothers help ichigo and the others by directing them to los noches so that they can save orihime when they break into los angeles and split up nell follows ichigo and catches up to him she is protected by ichigo when they encounter the prieverone espada dodoni during this time she grows a close attachment to ichigo like a child who unconditionally shows that love for someone who takes care of them she witnesses ichigo be defeated by yukiora and then be healed to face off against grimgel she grows admiration and respect for him as he endures pain and struggle just to save orihime nel even reassures arihime who begins to feel afraid of ichigo after he dons a holomask during his final battle with grimjao when neutral battles ichigo he recognizes nell and is surprised that ichigo does not know who she really is he tells him that she is a former espada saying that she tricked them but nell who has memory loss denies this and says she was not in a spotter she is affected by these claims and is worried that ichigo might think differently of her if he learns of her being a former espada she tries to reassure ichigo that he has to believe her she wasn't trying to trick him or lie to him ichigo understands that he's confident that nell was not lying to him we don't really see nell again until chapter 485 which takes place 17 months after eisen's defeat she falls out of the sky and surprises ichigo revealing to him that huikamundo has been taken over she travels with ichigo and the others back to huecomundo to investigate what is going on nell is left with orohime as ichigo battles against the quincy kilgae oppi we don't see her again until chapter 625 when grimhar is reunited with ichigo and prevents the two of them from fighting as she is in an adult form and ambushes ichigo she reveals that urohara had created a bracelet that allows her to switch between her child and adult form meaning that she can aid them in battle against the quincy's she states that thanks to the bracelet she will never change back to a charred form much to the shock of orihime who is funnily shocked by naliel's bond with ichigo grimgio advises neliel to stay out of their feud but we see her reply to him in a mature and composed tone saying that it is unwise to start a fight amongst each other during a war and that she is the third ranked espada while he is the sixth ranked still taking the ispada ranking seriously as she will not take orders from a lower rank to dispatcher grimjio does say that those rankings hold no meaning now that eisen is gone but she is willing to prove that she is stronger by suggesting that they fight to see who is stronger between the two of them we did see adult nell in the wick and window arc but we don't really see her speak much other than show excitement towards ichigo and say that she is not going to kill neutral however this interaction really does prove to us that her old self is back the intelligent sophisticated version of neliel prior to her turning into a child later we assumed that she saved the lives of yuri ichi yushiro urahara and grimjao from askin's ability after his death she didn't really do any battling during the thousand-year blood war arc which is in line with a pacifistic nature and a tendency to avoid fighting or killing others we learn more about nel-yelle through a poem that kubo writes for a character which is featured in bleach volume 34. if you were to give me wings i would fly for you even if this entire land were to sink underwater if you were to give me a sword i would stand up and fight for you even if this entire sky were to pierce you with its light this poem reveals to us the nature of her character as we learned that nell is the type of person to do anything for the sake of her comrades and people who have helped and cared for her the poem describes how if she was given wings she would use them to fly for her comrades the poem then brings her to the ground and describes how she would still be determined to help her comrades even if she was challenged by obstacles which kubo writes into the poem as the entire land sinking underwater however if she had strength and power then she would still stand up on the sinking land and fight for her comrades regardless the final part of the poem demonstrates her loyalty as she would remain loyal and fight even against the sky if it were to use its light to pierce her comrades this poem demonstrates her desire to protect who she loves at any cost proven by how she transforms into her adult form in order to help and protect ichigo overcoming her memory loss and her limitations in her child form just so that she could stand up and fight for him demonstrating her loyalty and commitment to protect her loved ones exactly as a poem describes we also learn more about nell's character through her appearances in other bleach media like the can't for your own world novels and bleach brave souls as we know each spider has an aspect of death most people assume that nelliel's aspect of death was sacrifice similar to the third ranked harry bells because nell was the former third ranked disbarder however bleach brave souls reveals that a aspect of death is lamentation which is defined as the passionate expression of weeping and sorrow after the death of someone this really does explain why she disapproved of killing others needlessly and refused to kill neutral giving meaning to when she said that she did not want to burden her conscience with the death of a beast showing that she would even lament the death of a beast like neutral who lacked a reason to fight in the flashback in chapter 312 we see nell save neutral from being attacked by a hollow she prevented the loss of life proving that if she has the power to prevent a death then she will do ultimately stopping her from lamenting over a needless casualty even in the thousand-year bloodwork arc she does not fight or kill anyone but rather rescues and prevents the deaths of those who are fighting asking her behaviors and motives in the series are explained by lamentation as an aspect of death in terms of appearances nell does appear more than the other aranka in this series but i don't think she appeared enough in the final arc of the series she is definitely present and given some screen time but a lot of her progression and actions are off screen like her rescuing her comrades from asking or urahara giving her the tool to switch between her child and adult form i definitely do want the anime to flesh out her appearances more when it returns next year and i hope that we can have it mention her aspect of death in some way instead of it being a tidbit featured within bleach brave
