you have to clean it off and then you pound it and peeling this like a potato pounding see the soap not a Dannette am awesome in this neck I am Navajo grandma and we are gonna learn something new about the Navajo culture and what we have to my left here is a yucca plant I like to write notes this says yucca and it's pronounced sus is it this plant is a Native American shampoo and these are some of its properties it reduces of inflammation and if you have itching this or dandruff it cleans and boosts and gives your hair volume and then your hair when you wash it will become shiny and smooth and fuller it's healthier and it thickens your hair Native Americans of all tribes in the western states and rocky mountain areas use it for hygiene and ceremonies so I'm gonna say a few words to Navajo to describe now your hair is C it is C and when it gets dirty you want to use and the shampoo and it's called color wash in Navajo it's called color wash that's the detergent property of the yucca plant not set but seat not set meaning your hair will come fuller and beautiful and shiny color wash that needs champey and let's see you'd see it's dirty and you have to color wash your hair okay let's see color wash that's basically how you say just a few words that are in combination with the shampoo I want to share with you as I was living with my grandmother and I call her my vision and my grandpa I called him my nollie now as far as hygiene was concerned and shampoo my hair was really long it was down probably past my knees it took quite a lot of washing to clean it and I loved undoing my hair and getting all kind of weeds in my hair and grandma just had a hard time with me but when it kind of got dirty she would have the shampoo the yucca already prepared and she would wash my hair with it and my hair always smells so wonderful and so sleek and clean and it would squeak cuz I always loved to pull my hair and I'd run it like a violin and I'd hear go it squeak back and forth and this is the only shampoo I knew well I'm with my grandmother and now we're talking about the yucca I grew up riding in a wagon we had two horses and grandpa would always hitch them to the wagon and we would drive in this summertime it was mainly only summertime grandpa would go and he'd say you know what we're running low on shampoo and we need to prepare for the winter and he would take us all my auntie's my uncles and all of us and we would go out on in the wagon and find yucca and it was just plenty there was so much yuck out there that was growing everywhere and so we would all get in the wagon and we would spend all day you know digging and gathering yucca you have to clean it off and then you pound it this is a one time maybe two shampoos now that we dug up the yucca I'm going to wash the matter the yuck off of the yucca first the next step is to take off the skin and peeling this like a potato you should be able to do this if you can fill a potato it's very easy peel away and it doesn't have to be super clean I mean you're gonna have little bits and pieces here and there look at all the meat in here that is where the shampoo the Tyler wash member tylo washes soap what grandpa did was to pound now we're pounding and when you pound it brings the Tyler wash out that's why you have to pound it it's necessary you're activating the saponin the detergent property and it looks like I've pounded a plenty we'll just pound the other side and already already you can feel and you can feel how slippery and the detergent the Tyler wash is already starting to activate there's so much kind of wash in there it seems like a little bit but will you get see the soap and it's it's not gonna really you know bubble up like your shampoo remember this is natural and but you can see its property it's kind of whoosh in there see bubbles and it's slippery it's nice and it's clean your listen can you hear how clean when my grandfather had finished preparing this shampoo or the yucca he would place these in a flower bag and he would hang them in a shade and they would dry so when we needed it there was just a big huge bag then we just took you know just a little bit probably a good handful like this then you soak it we're gonna dry this in the next video I'm gonna wash my granddaughter's hair with this living in the reservation there was no such thing as conditioner until I had my first child I didn't know what conditioner was and so this was all we used our hair was clean it was just and it was so beautiful her hair would just I mean that didn't get as like you know you sometimes you get electricity or hair and they won't do that it's just your hair just flowed and it was just you know so it just bounced and it was so full of life and I love that and then when you my grand my braid my hair she'd always say Oh your hair is so beautiful and we use that the hairbrush that I told you basically that the straw hairbrush that's all we knew now aside from just the root you can also use the leaf you can pound this and you'll get greens so everything has detergent in this plant so it's not necessarily just a root it's the leaves as well so the leaf also has detergent in it the taller wash and so when you put it in the water you're getting soap in there as well I like the root because there's more color whooshing there I can feel this I can feel the soldier you know there it is okay you can see just so much bubble new Jonah very nice to smell and then it's very slippery you can feel the detergent activated once we pounded it that's in preparation for the hair washing that's going to come up in another video and I hope to see you again so you can share more culture with my family and as the Natomas onon your navajo grandma for right now we'll sign off and hug going it
