[Music] so welcome back everybody in the pile that you see behind me we have got the most requested and mysterious log on the channel there is a big giant pine log buried in there with some kind of a foreign object in it that we well i say we that y'all y'all want to see what it is if you remember from last week's video we sawed up a very nice pine log on the mill it was something like 28 inches at the butt and i was gonna get a whole bunch of two by fours out of it until we started running into a hardware store worth of nails and then we eventually hit something that stopped the saw head it's pretty rare that i hit something that actually just stops the saw head that it won't cut through it cuts through just about everything and then of course it dulls the blade but it'll cut through just about everything but i ran into something that it wouldn't even go through so i got a whole bunch of comments on that video saying what was in the log what was in the log what was in the log y'all can't leave us hanging like that so by popular request we're going to pull this lock out of this burn pile and thankfully my friend eric hasn't burned it yet we're going to pull this log out we're going to try to remove whatever was in there and then maybe we'll put it back on the mill and see if we can continue with our two before let's dig it out and see what we got [Applause] [Applause] so [Applause] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] so [Applause] all right guys so here's the offending log we're going to go ahead and start hacking at it with the chainsaw and see what we can find um i can't see anything super obvious right here so we're going to try to trim this out a little bit i think what i'll do is kind of cut cut maybe right right about here and just kind of try to knock this off i don't want to hit the i don't want to hit whatever it is with the saw with the chainsaw chain either but my guess is it's probably some kind of a lag bolt i found a lag bolt in one of these trees out here before and a lot of folks on the channel said it could have been from an old deer stand and that kind of makes sense but there's no telling what it is let's um let's stop talking and start sawing and see if we can find it [Music] [Music] there it is right there there it is right there that blade actually did go through it i don't know if y'all can see that i'll try to get a closer up shot so it's actually right here it's actually right there it was not super obvious it barely shines but anyway that's it so the blade did go through it and then i guess it just messed up the teeth so bad on the blade that it just wasn't able to continue very much farther so there it is whatever it is let's see if we can dig it out and of course i didn't come prepared for this i'm not sure why i'm going to get a chainsaw that's less uh less important [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] all right guys here it is can y'all see that i hit it once with that little that little chainsaw so that chain is history look at that it's like a square nail there's no projects complete without attempting to break your knife once or twice there went so it's not like an old antique cut nail i don't think it is it's not particularly heavy it does have like a spiral to it which is interesting i mean it almost feels like aluminum i'll try to find a magnet here in a minute and see see what it's made out of but there it is so there's the mystery hope you all are happy hope you all are happy all right well i'm gonna put a magnet to this and just see if it's aluminum or not and then we'll throw this log back on the mill and give it another go so it is not aluminum it is definitely some kind of some kind of steel iron whatever but there it is all right let's uh let's conquer this log so i dug the other two things out of two nails out of there as well and it's kind of interesting as you can see that the big one that ended up ruining the blade was that square one these other ones are just standard 16 penny nails i think it's kind of interesting [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so so so so [Music] [Music] hey [Music] [Applause] this is the gift it just keeps on giving i really should have quit while i was ahead but now i'm just too invested oh man let's get another blade and keep going [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so we've got the log flipped over and one of my thoughts was just to go ahead and get a four inch cant one four inch cap out of this just to try to avoid any possible nails that might be closer to the surface there but it's just too thick to waste that much it's uh well over eight inches so i can get two four inch cants out of this even with the uh even with the waste even with the slab cut cutting that off um i know a lot of y'all are gonna be asking why don't you use a metal detector and i looked for my metal detector this morning actually and i couldn't find it and i think i am going to start bringing that thing because it will at least find surface nails some of these nails were just too deep for it to have found and even if you do find a really deep nail it's you know you're not going to be able to dig it out without expending just unbelievable amounts of time doing it uh but anyway yeah i'll probably start bringing my metal detector because this is getting this is a getting to be kind of a common occurrence on some of these hopefully the rest of these logs aren't aren't like this one hopefully this was the only one but anyway uh let's just go ahead and make our cut here and hope there's not any metal in this and if there is i do have a couple more blades left and uh i tell you if i didn't have my own sharpening system i don't think i would be doing this it's um pretty simple for me to sharpen these blades and cheap so it's not a huge huge deal there anyway um let's see if we can finish this up [Music] so that went pretty good no nails uh there are some worrisome spots right here this these are kind of the markings that males make uh once you drive them into a tree and the tree kind of heals around them and uh right here as well i'm gonna get the little saw and kind of dig right here and see if i hit anything and if i don't we'll make another cut [Music] all right so i think that was just a little bit of discoloration from that kind of being close to the surface of the tree kind of that blue stain that you get sometimes after a log has been kind of sitting around so uh yeah let's try another cut so [Music] so [Music] [Music] uh [Music] [Music] all right wasn't quite so lucky on that cut i think i'm going to call this pine log ace there's more nails than a hardware store in here [Music] [Music] [Music] so so [Music] [Music] [Applause] so so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so so so oh [Music] [Music] so so [Music] so [Applause] so so guys i am happy to report that we are done with that log um there are about 25 or so boards here two by fours here they're 12 feet or so long a little over 12 feet long and uh they're nice they're true two by fours super super nice very very nice boards and uh they were hard fought so the question is i guess was it really worth it um well i've mentioned on the channel before that this is not this is not my full-time job this is something that i do to get boards to remodel our house and to do projects around the house and stuff like that and recently since i've come into this huge pile of logs and all the logs that eric is able to bring here i am beginning to do it just for a little bit of side money as well so this is not how we make our living think heavens if it were i would say that this was absolutely a waste of time and not worth it but it's not and um it was it was kind of worth it that's the best thing i know how to say it was kind of worth it um it ate up i think five blades i'm not sure four or five blades i'm thinking five uh if i had if i did not have a sharpening system uh that i could sharpen my blades myself i would say this was a huge waste of time and certainly not worth it i've got about three and a half i think hours in this project so time wise blade wise practicality-wise rationally i don't think it was really worth it um but i don't do this to make money for you know to support the fan it's not my full-time job i guess you could say so it was it'll be worth it when the boards get sold and i i get the money i guess that's that's the best thing i know how to say um but we're done with it we conquered uh we got all kinds of nails out of this log and man yeah a lot of people say you should get a metal detector and i'm gonna i think i'm gonna start bringing my metal detector like i said it'll only do about two inches deep but that's better than nothing if i start if i i guess really if i find a log that has got some surface nails in it i'll just skip it all together because this was a mess this was a really was a mess and i read a forum post by somebody that said nobody ever puts just one nail in a tree and that's absolutely true so anyway we're done we got some beautiful beautiful two befores on a positive note let's start let's start talking positive on a positive note we got some beautiful boards i should be able to sell them okay and uh and we're done we conquered that log i'm not gonna get that big slab that we put in the burn pile i'm not gonna get it out and bother with it i'm just i'm moving on so that's going to do it i hope that you all enjoyed this video and thank you for watching and i'll see you on the next one
