okay dad load her up there we go yeah it's got quite the uh butt flare here i'm going to be trimming a little bit of this off here and there [Music] all right so that's just that's just beating the mill up there all right let's get it uh let's get the pith leveled hey everybody welcome back to the arnold sawmill get my feet my feet under me here uh on the mill today nice big white oak about nine feet long uh 30 inches on this end 36 plus on this end and what we're going to deal with today is how to take care of uh what they call butt flare or butt swell it's at the bottom of the the butt log itself where it flares out just before it goes into the root system or the stump in the ground with the lt35 it can be a challenge because you don't have a wide head option on here you've got 26 inches between the blade guides and even less if you run your stops straight up and down we're going to go over how we handle handle this today and handle whittling this end down and get everything squared up and go from there okay you will never get 26 inches out of the lt-35 or close to that if you run the stop straight up and down so we're going to show you how we deal with that here on the iron oak sawmill let's get started okay i purposely left the head down here so you can see what we're having to contend with with the limited space here between the blade guides all we've got here is and this is actually one of the narrowest parts is 34 inches and i've already cut off part of this flare back when we harvested the log on the vertical 38 inches so yeah we've already lost a little bit off of this edge and the good thing we did because it positioned just right on the mill in order to get it the best part or sorry the best clearance for us and what we're doing here is we're going to come up and just take a shave off of the top here as much as we can and just take care of some of this flare let me show you what we've done here on the side in order to get this log as far over as we possibly can to clear this outer blade guide all right okay folks i tried my best to get it from the operator's side but you can see what we've done here the stops are tilted down quite a bit and when you do that you're able to push this log out over top of the stop so this log is actually hanging out darn near the rail here on the top of the mill at uh at the far end there or at the operator end you go down you can see we're getting another five inch overhang or more from the stops by dropping them down and pushing the log over using the clamp and that worked out really well and like i said just by chance this got cut off another clearance issue you're going to have is the mast itself right here you have that issue with that clearing the butt flare of the log so if you haven't already and you get it loaded up on the mill and this is where you're at where you've got your two blade guides in a good position and you still have this you're gonna have to take a saw to it and flatten this off so you can get clearance for the mass to come on by what we're dealing with today is just the flare so you can see the inner blade guide here got plenty of clearance there happens to be a little notch here that's convenient once again and on the outer blade guide because we haven't pushed that so far out over the stops you've got a good two inches of clearance here and like all i said we're just shaving this this flare off here i'm all the way up full 32 inches up this may actually take a slice all the way down the log the way it looks it's going to take off the top i don't know a couple inches of the log in the center because it does bow down a little bit so we got plenty of clearance here we can go ahead and get the sawing on we'll take the steps after that and show you what we got to do to keep working this butt flare off of here and again on the inside here i've got about an inch clearance on the uh an inch clearance on the mast so we're good to go over here again it was just convenience that this happened to work out because this was cut off much earlier where we cut off the flare over here but um we're all ready to go take our first cut off of here [Applause] okay let's go ahead and start taking the first cuts off of the white oak here we'll get the whittling down the butt flare and show you our next step mike's going to be on the whole time so if uh if it does break up i apologize you'll also hear me talking to deb throughout the day because we have our headsets on so get clipped up here to the headset there we go you hear me dab okay how about now okay all right we uh fueled up the tension on the blade let's go ahead and take that first cut and we're gonna go all the way up 32 inches size of this log dictates we got to go all the way up so i'm starting to creep up over the trees here this is actually the following morning there we go all the way up red depth there we go check to make sure the blade's set proper take that first cut that's it for that cut let's just take a little bit of the flare off let me uh see if i can get one more cut out of this now we can't go up on the head because we're already all the way up so you have to be careful backing up you don't get caught let's just drop it an inch believe we can clear that yet over there you have to come around so you're not we're not wasting anything because instead of just the flare pieces coming off all right but what we don't want to do is take a big slice off here just to get rid of the flare and end up wasting a lot of wood so a little bit of time for us it keeps the pizza smaller for us to deal with a little bit doing something like this you're taking off as much as you can until you can't take any more off uh you know if you're dealing with a buck player like this and here if you're dealing with uh not being able to fit past once you get down so far and there it is [Applause] that will not fit past i mean i could trim that little bit off but instead of whipping out chainsaws and everything else we're just going to go off of what we could do with the mill we're going to back this up plan today is a six quarter white oak now all we're looking to do here is get this corner of the butt flare right here all we're looking to do here is get this corner of the butt flare up in the air and trim this off okay we're not getting accurate cutting or anything else yet let's go ahead and get this up it's up about where i want it i want to look that into the log back up and uh go ahead and trim this piece off okay lower the stops a little bit but we do have to take the log turner out like we did before to push this over there wait till that's out of the way before i open any clamps up be safe and i've got as far over as i can get safely you don't want to drop your stops too far down and end up rolling off the near the operator's side of the mill [Music] let's see if we can clear that yeah we'll be able to take a few slices off of that one let's start off right there bring it down they're all just trim pieces and most of them are uh nope [Music] so [Applause] there you go good to make sure you're rolling it the right way go ahead take our cut i don't want to put that's the only corner we haven't taken off the one where the outer blade guide's going to hit right now still a considerable amount of flare there so keep rolling our log over now it's going [Applause] okay all right lower our stops again now this should roll just about where we want it you push the bottom over a little bit with the clamp i think we have to watch because if i do it wrong it's going to roll back and slam down into the middle we don't want that all right i think that'll do i just take that one shot right there get one more swipe off of there you have a lot of flair to deal with to take care of almost the last bit of flare one more quarter folks to get it unstuck all right let's bring this last corner up here yeah that was the first side i cut the first base i cut that's probably where we're going to start taking boards off of before anything else and that's where we'll find the metal i may go to the opposite side actually i think i will no sense nailing a piece of metal right away it's unintended [Music] i'm about there to do it so we're out of it uh nice looking wood now this is where we just took our cuts off finally getting some decent sized boards out but you can see all the different facets here where we trimmed and got the uh the butt flare removed and we definitely got a bit of shaking here it shows up on this end but not on the other end and there's the uh bit of metal we were talking about it's got to be right in there somewhere i'm going to try to avoid that side altogether but uh looking pretty good hey let's take a look at the grain i'm not going to throw water on this today should be able to see that nice white oak grain look at those nice cathedrals beautiful stuff i'm going to go six quarter on this we've had requests for six quarter we don't have any so now we will i have four quarter and six quarter nice stuff so far it's nice to clear it should be clear lumber for the most part we've got one knot out here and i know there was a face with a couple of knots sticking out a couple of branch stubs that uh might affect the quality we'll uh go from there we'll pick the best face and keep cutting all right i'm going to do is turn 180 i think [Music] there we go there's a nice little waist cut over here again we're still dealing just a lot of sapwood down here and we get some branch nubs in that see if we'll clear the next cut i believe we will yeah all right coming through let's get a look and see we're dealing with here [Applause] i think overall we may end up losing the ends of this thing because of the shake i'm not losing the ends of it down to about eight foot this will just salvage what you could out of the log because of the uh [Applause] it's urban logging other than have it and then having it wasted burned up see what you can salvage there time away it's saying it's uh it's hitting at different points but it's as shallow as four inches [Music] let's turn sensitivity down a little bit more if it still picks it up all right there i lost it there oh there it is it still says it's four inches down back it off one more who wants to flip the coin on this one you want to flip a coin on this one huh no just want to cut it are you sure okay i'm having faith in you [Applause] deb said let her rip tater chip so the bars are good [Applause] let me see now that's really dark now hey tater chip you hit something didn't even hear it that's how tiny it was but it knocked one of the teeth out a tiny bit maybe i don't know barely can tell no that was a good call [Applause] but we know to stay away from that now uh i'm gonna try to take it out it wouldn't hurt well we should it'll open up options for when we get further into the log because we're going to find more metal that's not the only metal in there it's staining was way too big on the bottom if it's a nail or wire fence um i'm guessing it's wire fencing it actually looks like a piece of barbed wire it's actually two wires coming out i have a funny feeling fencing went through this tree it's too flexible for anything else it's tie wire and i bet it's tied to a fence post my guess so let's stay clear this side of the log [Music] [Music] bigger that best space has wire in it that's another one for them too much sap whatever another one for crafters there babe what [Music] take one more cut off of here and i'm going to turn it to this face there we go i did not want to do that take it out of there please there's the way to do it oh [Applause] [Music] as you can see here's where we got the metal we're doing a little digging i do believe we have a fence post or something in here or at least old fencing there's the wire that was in there was wiring it was a tie wire of sorts and it keeps getting darker and darker as you go down in there so there's something bigger and bigger i think we'll be able to cut down here so far and stop and then maybe come in from the other side or from the opposite face of this so but in the meantime we're going to keep cutting some nice clear white oak boards out of here and these things are 20 inches wide and we have to trim them get the sapwood off here but man that's some beautiful green it looks like we may pick up a branch nub around in here maybe one in here it's the tiny one right there i'm sure that'll get a little bit bigger as we go in but this is nice stuff you know what i got to show the white oak the same love and share the black walnut let's hit it with some water oh yeah that looks nice very cool i mean no figure but if you're looking for uh some good solid white oak lumber here you go good stuff [Music] so [Applause] foreign yeah i didn't want to throw that but nobody was shooting off the end there's a dark dark spot showing up here i have to get a beep and that said two inches two inches again what do you think oh sure now watch instead of hitting a little wire like we said like we did when you said go ahead we're gonna hit a freaking insulator fence post leg leg eye leg bolt monstrosity in there it goes nothing [Music] we haven't billed lumber well i mean nothing this big anyway oh yeah we got a mess in here now [Music] [Applause] yeah that's the ring shake yeah the next i mean we might even hit something with that one [Applause] it's still cut nice and flat though [Music] since we have metal in the tree i want to check every slice [Applause] okay oh so [Music] all right this one appears to be a keeper watch your hands i'm gonna fl i'm gonna flip it over whoa lots of dark staining in there there's still no metal and quarter cell and all the way up this half this is awfully dark right here unfortunately we may only get those two what's his face look like now because he did have a knot in it it had this knot in it right here dang it see how much black is showing up in here there's metal right below there we'll grab the metal detector oh still nothing false reading the sensitivity is so low it should pick it up if it's really close to the surface and i'm gonna hit it in the next pass or something like that all right let's go after another quarter sawn cut keep your fingers crossed whoa wow that a lot of black but yeah that's a nice quarter song once we get these let's show them what we're trying to salvage out of here okay what we're trying to salvage is you can see obviously there's we're coming up on the metal coming up fast actually might might have tagged a little bit right here i'll see but slide that over a little bit and hold it up so it doesn't fall thank you but we're trying to save it's a quarter sawn along this edge i mean he said his boards are you got all this juvenile wood over here all the pith running up through there it's no good but right next to it a lot of nice quarter sawn grain we want to salvage that and over here on the cant that's still sitting up i don't think i don't think we're going to be able to get any deeper on this face as you can see we're coming up on this one where there's metal here this i really think there's metal right there like charcoal in there put this here yeah i wish i could salvage that let me check it with the metal detector see if i can get one more cut out of this so you can see the big reflecting here all the way along that board nice definitely want to save the quarter sawn all right let's see if we get one more out of it if we get into the middle at this junk we're just going to stop with it i don't know if we could even square it up for a beam so much metal in it i don't know if anybody want it for a beam i mean the pith is longer centered which doesn't matter i might start picking up the clamps here [Music] that metals within two inches turn the sensitivity down now it's not picking it up that's the lowest sensitivity to setting there is it's got it and it's saying it's two inches [Music] yeah there's something right below there right in here [Music] nope we'll be lucky to get another cut out of this face bye bye quarter song [Music] ah there we go a little block of firewood okay you see what we did there we cut that at about six foot uh really didn't feel right getting rid of the uh yeah it really didn't feel right getting rid of the quarter-sawn face there it looked too nice i think all of our metal issues are below here and even when we hit that little wire it's not a problem the blade seemed to survive it really well hasn't really changed the cut at all you didn't realize your mic's off right there you go there we go this is going to be we're going to be able to get a lot more quarter song going this direction this is just about to run out maybe one or two more boards would be 90 degrees in the face or 80 to 90. if we flip to this side we're gonna get probably four boards coming out of there if what we're going for is quarter sawn that's what we got to look at yeah this is going to look much nicer there we go folks get that out of there [Music] no i'm not even touching it i'm turning it you weren't you weren't here you for that one you were off the air we're turning it to another face we're gonna get more more quarter sawn out of this face than we will out of that one yeah we'll maintain quarter saw probably for three to four boards in that phase live support is so i have to flip it over those are yours [Music] still taking them as far as i'm concerned yeah there's not even that's all split there and staying there and now we got although that has a little bit of a dark spot in it what if wood bleach would take that out what are we trimming off here so set these by themselves over here ugh so [Music] okay so i just want to get a good look at these unfortunately they do have iron stains in them go ahead and get a look at the cortisone here it looks nice look at the right fleck in that they just wanted to salvage as much as we could out of this tree considering the amount of metal was in it and the size of it so these two here we'll be sure to mark these as quarter-sawn on the end so we can tell later on when we go to use them and like i said unfortunately you got the iron stains on this thing you still got these are six feet long figure about foot and a half cut off if you want to take the iron out completely or leave it in for character with some really nice boards there worth the effort to salvage them i think okay that'll wrap it up for the uh white oak it's been uh year on the ground and been here for a couple of months finally getting salt up not a whole lot of board footage in fact that log which would have crushed this truck is now what we have left of it here after trimming and scraping out the the uh iron section out of the log putting that in the burn pile and everything else we got some decently wide board some quarter zone boards definitely usable six quarter let's take a look and see toyota even squatting here barely so yeah quite a bit of loss in that one but still worth worth the effort i think let me go ahead and wrap this one up i got some folks heading over looking to look at some lumber so we'll finish this one up well that'll wrap up another quick mill job here at the ironwood sawmill nice bit of white oakland not the highest quality uh with iron staining and whatnot in it but a good amount of lumber including some good quarter sawn boards again salvage as much out of that log as we could never like to waste any of it renewable resource yes but why waste it if you don't have to if you have any questions about how we're dealing with the uh the butt flare or the butt swell on that log uh be sure to put it down in the comments section we're glad to help out hopefully i explained enough of that when we were doing it i know once we got into sawing it i could start to get concerned about the steel so i was looking out for uh for our blade i'm gonna make that thing last as long as we can and uh although we did nip some wire with it it kept cutting fl straight and flat it wasn't enough to damage it and uh probably get uh maybe another log out of it we'll see all right so we're gonna go ahead and get this stacked and stickered it's going into the back corner back there we have a pallet ready for it unfortunately i can't put anything out here because we're looking to clear this out and make room for some bigger lots of lumber we've got coming so stay tuned for that but again if you have any questions about any of the equipment here we're using here any methods we're using or any of the tools we're using be sure to put it down in the comments section below to help you out and i'd like to thank everybody for coming out we'll see you out here next time
