a couple of weeks ago i customized thrift shop artworks and one of them everyone loved including me in this video i'm gonna stretch myself to my absolute limits i want to make an artwork just as big that begins the story of this hero and the dragon this video is sponsored by blackmagic design and davinci resolve more about them later in this video i have a big blank canvas and i have two hours now i have very little time because we're moving studios to a brand new studio and as part of that i've been running an auction selling my original art including this beautiful piece there's only a couple of days left so if you want to grab an item from the auction you still can but tom is very fast running out you can also grab signed prints i don't do this often and if you love the hero and dragon piece by the way that is also available as a sign print even though the original will be sent out to the lucky winning bidder today i'm going to try and tell this story before it became that story i want to tell the beginning i thought it'd be really fun to similarly match the visuals of their composition but go for a really different style and tell the beginning of the story maybe it's the start of the day when they met maybe they were geared up ready to fight so we need to start with a layer of liquid clear i feel like this will work because there's so much area to cover i'm going to start off by mixing colors in this because it's going to be too messy on the palette and i need to use big brushes all right first color you're ready prussian blue i'm actually going to spread it out like that i don't think i need a lot i'm going to mix in a little bit of this purple not a huge amount let's see how far this gets me it's quite dark that's right we'll start off dark vignette lighter blue cobalt blue and mix this in with our white i'm going to put in a little bit of a little bit of this pink more of this white this is a weird way to mix colors but it's working for me it's a pretty nice sky gradient i'm pretty happy with that i'll go back to this blue and start mixing in this vignette i mean i don't know about you that's a pretty nice sky gradient i don't know if this is a dumb idea or not but i'm doing it i'm mixing a little bit of yellow and grabbing a bit more of this pink sort of neutralizes it sort of becomes a little green let's go back over to the pink that's nice so it goes it becomes a lilac-y pastel i don't mind that i just want to create a bit more variety of color in the sky river reflection gonna do that i'll just do this a bit this is fine oh that was dark whoops oh that was a mistake no it wasn't it was a happy accident hello i'm bob all right fluffy little clouds i want to be a bit more dramatic i've sort of gone flat i feel like i need an angle i'm going to i'm going to tweak this so they're sort of warping like in an arc a little bit just give it a little bit more distortion a little more perspective and clouds aren't uniform so i can relax i can put whatever i want in my world including trees that and clouds that don't look very good my choice i can do that that one's got a tone of like orange and bits of purple throughout this is blue and yellow and blue make green trees can be green unless i go more dramatic because that's dramatic and go like pinks and purples i'm doing that okay it's at this point i could probably start using my palette but i'm sorry just doing this now basically i'm thinking okay light is coming from the bottom and the back this is where i'm going to get a bit brave that pink i'm just trying to add a little more dimension to the clouds and a little more color to the sky it doesn't look like a lot yet but what i'm hoping that in the next step it'll bring all these colors together really soften it yes i'm happy with that oh confidence is brewing and i can move on to my palette mountains oh that's actually quite nice if i'm mixing that purple and then i'll grab some of this white that's a really nice sort of purple all right that's my color all right so i'm going to add mountains where there aren't in the original i'm going to pretend there are nice dry paint brush bring all this down all right this is fun i should paint more i want to paint more highlights first snow there my mountain so far that's a good start okay so i'm doing shadows now uh which i'm gonna lean into this purple let's do it i think the purple is adding a nice bit of punch i can't overdo it but i think when i do it seems to be really cool if we echo the mountains here shadow is just sort of roughly on the same side grab my highlights doesn't have to be perfect because in the next step so i'm going to wipe the paint off and does it look like i know what i'm doing i don't have a clue i'm not like amazing oh hey and that makes it look like little trees so i do that i'm like oh look at that little trees that looks like reflections doesn't it so what do you reckon yeah it's great it's pretty good so the ground then should be a gray purple like an autumn purple you know what colors make great black look at this big fat tuba black that's white it's going to be very dark foreground i'm deciding oh i'm just going to do stuff this is my dark purple mix i did this for the mountains but i've got to neutralize it a little bit i'm going to use some of my precious white i have a theory basically of colors that are vibrant and you can neutralize them with other colors so blue mixed with sort of like a red makes it more purple but you can see it's sort of dulling down the saturation a little bit if i mix in a little bit of this yellow it'll make it more green but i feel like it still further saps the color a little bit so i feel like i can almost mix a near gray out of soft primaries that's my theory to save on white so i could pinch a little bit of white tiny bit of black mix that in and that's like a gray steel gray blue okay uh i think that's not bad actually you can't have too much vibrancy everywhere so i'm laying the foundation of the ground cover to be really neutral i'm gonna cover a lot more area than i just did let's soften this and spread this [Music] i don't know what bob ross would do with me you know maybe he'd chill me out maybe i'd hype him up maybe we're maybe we'd be good for each other so this is everything that's the background sky mountains ground cover that we'll add on to but we can't go too nuts with the ground cover because the trees have to go on that so actually i think the trees are next this has got some trees in this sort of foreground area but there's a lot of mist in the back there's no detail behind there so actually i've just got to create a foundation to put that detail onto there we go there we go that's it nice neutral pushed in the background so my plan with the trees is start with foliage then do tree shadows then tree highlights then end with branches and foliage wear me fan brushes i should have thought ahead that's not how i roll you know me of course you know me because you subscribed and you've already liked this video haven't they have you haven't you sorry what you haven't subscribed so you know what this is a challenge i dare you to subscribe and just watch what i can do in the next couple of months you're going to see crazy cool stuff if you hit like more people will enjoy this which you've enjoyed so far and it's only gonna get better this is what i do with very little time and a lot of pressure just wait until i have a lot of time and still a lot of pressure this is pretty cool i'm pretty i'm pretty happy with this let's get crazy so i'm just gonna get the darkest color and i'm just gonna bring in these reflections now i'll make more of them when i get to highlight which is next it's time to move on to highlights so i'm going to step into these next steps that are really actually going to make the biggest difference the quickest which is a huge relief because actually after all of that it's a pretty solid foundation to start from on which i can just hopefully let the magic happen the black magic which you can let happen in your life if you're looking for fantastic camera gear or the world's best editing program blackmagic have response to this video and they are not only the production equipment we use to film they're the best studio and cinematography cameras on the market the best i've ever seen absolutely best i've ever used we run our whole studio from davinci resolve the free version but you don't have to be a super professional person to understand or use it in fact they made the cut tab which is a tab that you can click on to use davinci resolve which puts all of its big fancy features in a much more simplified streamlined version by the way did i mention davinci resolve does big block busting hollywood flicks pulling off some of the best vfx and color grading and epic editing in the same software that you can get for free right now and learn to edit in go check out the links in the description i can't tell you how much i love blackmagic hardware and software but i'm going to bloody well try and this is an attempt because it's really worth checking out if you're into video production or post-production so huge thank you to blackmagic for sponsoring this video making incredible magic happen on my channels and for my audience color time i'm going to stick to blues and grays in the trunks i'm going to keep that grain there see how it's all a bit muddy that's all right i'm just going to going to keep that there because it's going to add texture it's very white isn't it that's all right i'll dull it down add a bit more color and i'm sticking to one direction not that one direction silly post production editing taking my dumb jokes as cues if it looks a bit much i'll bring it back [Music] but here's the other thing look what they do in the water they've just got like these little textures i'm just gonna do that sort of work it's almost winter i mean that if that's like summer or autumn this is the winter scene i like that winter let's lean into that light blue pink it's a nice cold lavender do you know what those taps i was making with that brush before they were working pretty well i'm going to use that to lay down the first layer in just this pink maybe a touch of blue just going to start bringing layers in it's just adding a bit of bushiness because the the fan brush sort of adds highlight no point adding highlights if there's nothing to highlight okay highlight timer it's a lot but i can balance that out in a second by just creating a few focal points just going to get a little bit more vibrant pink here and i'm going to do the the ground yeah doesn't that separate it i can use this as a highlight now to create some points of interest here's one here's one let's go up here and that's just sort of pushing everything else back a little bit okay i am actually pretty happy with that uh and in fact i actually feel like i i'm probably up to the last bit which is the dragon and the hero i feel like this is their time to shine and how do i do that i feel like they should be in roughly the same positions but i feel like the dragon should be facing away maybe not expecting and the hero should look more like mean okay i'm just gonna do it just gonna do it [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] ah we're not done yet we're not done yet but we're so close and it's actually telling a story it's very sharp and very cold and i'm just going to emphasize that and there's three things i'm going to do to really punch that home the first is frost frosty breath just going to grab this a little bit of white little flat floofy brush and just just a bit of that you just want it subtle it's frosty let's lean into it two icy river give us a clear indication as to where the world begins and ends in the reflection feel like that's pretty good and three last but not least the finishing touch rob you are holding it up nice and wide you're flicking some flicking stuff at you so yeah poison stuff yeah don't say it like that nice and wide okay so we're starting off here nice and high up in both directions all right you ready i've never done this before oh oh it's working and it's very uncontrollable there we go oh whoa that's a lot all right come over this way this is the last bit of detail get that snow in there getting paint everywhere i can't go too crazy i gotta stop oh there is one more thing you know what it is gotta sign it [Music] [Applause] [Music] i had two hours today and i gotta say i made the painting i am most proud of i mean that i wanted to tell the start of that story and i did in a way more intense way than i expected i didn't expect to go so winter but i just it started going there and i just went there i'm so glad i did because i think the altered original is so autumn and hot and peaceful and i think adding that real sharp chill that winter frost bite adds to the animosity and maybe maybe the hero and the dragon maybe it took several seasons for them to finally come to respect and part peacefully well they had a book club and like they met in the forest every day and they're like hey dragon house how things go you know they had like i am there's lots of fumes in here right now so i'm just use this is the queue to like wrap it up but not before i say this can be yours i'm going to add this as the very last piece to the auction i'm going to extend the option by one day so if you want this piece it could be yours you could put it on your wall if you win that auction i will link to it in the description but i'm also going to make a signed print of it so that if you love it you can get an a4 or a3 print of it i will hand sign it
