hey guys welcome back to the channel today's video we wanted to change things up just a little bit and go in a different direction uh it was also inspired by another youtuber the channel name will be down in the description and it's celebrating appalachia wonderful place to live i've you know grown up here and i've actually been on the outside looking in i've you know i've traveled some places out of appalachia you know and i've heard you know some of the comments about the way the way i talk which i don't really realize that we have an accent until you get away from here and then you can hear that accent so and one of the most common things we get asked is where are you from and then you know we have to explain well i'm from virginia you know which is southwest virginia um right in the heart of the appalachian mountains and uh her channel is wonderful if you haven't had a chance to check it out click on go down in the description click on the link and go over there and check it out wonderful channel she has recipes she she explains you know some of the old wives tales and and she goes into details about some of the way we talk as well just wonderful videos and she is a wonderful person so we wanted to do a video because we was inspired by her videos and i guess i wanted to touch on some of the stereotypes about the people from the appalachian mountains uh [Music] before we go any further we don't we're not like cavemen or the or the beverly hillbillies you know you know i was not out hunting for some game and and you know doing all that just poor mountaineer barely kept my family fed that's not no uh but i will say this around here you know used to coal used to be one of the biggest sources of income whether you work for the railroad or in a coal mine and even used to which that that is going now as well but it used to be tobacco um and the old timers and you'll still hear it called today they'll say backer and that's that's what they're talking about and everybody that had a farm just about it raised tobacco so you know that was that that's what put shoes on on your kids feet dinner on the table you know clothes on everybody in the family and uh the way it used to be was you would work a farm and then you'd go down the road and you'd work another farm and everybody kind of just pitched in and helped you know and that that was i remember a lot of that even back in the 90s you know when i when i was coming up and was you know getting big enough to understand what was going on so i guess i will say this as a stereotype we do put butter on everything and uh we do we do use oil now i call it that because that's what i've always called it i've heard it called oil um i always thought oil was what you put in your vehicle you know i found out i was wrong because that's what a lot of people you know outside of these mountains call oh um and just like fire you know which is kind of weird for me to say it like that but it's it's far that's what we call it um same thing for wheels on your vehicle those are tires for you know for most people so for us it's tars you know um you'll hear us if you if if you hear hear us say well bless your heart that could be taken you know we could be being very sarcastic or we could be you know oh i'm sorry i didn't you know this had happened i'm sorry bless your heart i'm sorry this is happening or if it's you know you hear somebody's bless your heart son you know might want to start backing up a little bit so and one of the things i'm curious about because we are huge on family especially before this pandemic came around and you know this stay at home the safer at homes the school shut down all that you know before all that happened we loved get togethers uh birthday parties would turn into reunions you know cookouts would you know say well hey kyle so-and-so have them come on over tell them to bring their their tater salad you know um things like that you know so comment down below if it's the same way from where you're from because i'm curious i want to know um and two before we go any further if if you do like this style video and want to learn more about uh about us where we're from you know i have kind of the way we live and everything like that comment down below let us know if it's if it's something that you know picks your interest if not cool but if it is let us know uh we'll keep doing some of these videos because like i said celebrating appalachia her channel is just phenomenal so head over there and check it out um another stereotype uh you know they i hear you know use it on tv and things like that you know you'll hear well they must be dumb ignorant hicks well uh not necessarily uh we are pretty tech savvy we uh we do a lot of things that might seem strange outside looking in but we have a reason mainland for everything we do but there is a lot a lot of good craftsmen that comes out of the south you know a lot of a lot of trades you know there's uh you know the small businesses a lot of small businesses in this area you know and appalachia in general you know so and that's a lot of well you know runs appalachia is the small businesses um and you know we're big on on that here at quarantine dad i love small businesses i love to support them because that's kind of the backbone of our country but you know it's just it's fascinating too like if i'm on the phone with someone and because i don't realize necessarily that i have a accent until you know like if i'm on a cell phone or something and there's an echo and i hear myself and i'm like oh my goodness this person must think i'm a hick you know stuff like gosh that's what i sound like but uh even when i'm you know shooting these videos and we go back and watch them i'm like oh that's what i sound like so uh which probably happened when i watched this one back but uh if there's anything to that you think that you'd like to see us cover on a video like this comment down below and let us know because i do plan on doing some more um and i'll you know i'll sit down and come up with some more stuff but uh i wanted to touch on one more thing before we come to an end we do a lot of gardening everybody around here does gardening uh they'll raise a garden you know we we raised pretty good-sized one last year um but our neighbor their tomatoes didn't do good so what we've done was we traded tomatoes for peppers and that's kind of like a thing you know if somebody doesn't have this then we'll trade something out of the garden for this you know whether it's you know beans or corn or or taters or onions you know you just trade back and forth and things like that um and with that said we do a lot of canning and uh i'm not talking about metal cans i'm talking about jars and we call it cannon because it works the same way you you're putting something in a in a glass jar and which is cooked on you know on the stove or you can go to a cantering and do it but for example we grew these strawberries and there's a strawberry jam and this is the glass jar it's sealed with your flat and then this is your rim and that's your glass jar so if you do this i'm so curious if you do canon let me know because as far as i'm i know it's it i know it's huge around here but i'm curious to see if how big it is you know out there so let me know if you do if it's something you do and uh get back to me and i like to answer every comment i don't care what it's about but uh that's my some of the things that i you know just kind of wanted to cover and uh just mainly talk about so but like i said let us know if you like these videos uh hit that subscribe button and click that notification bell and that will notify you every time we come out with a new video and thanks for watching
