Holy shit.
βNothing personalβ damn. What a different world this guy came from and saw.
I think, despite the occasional misplaced question, the interview was stellar; the interviewer recognized when it was time to STFU and let the guy speak. I've never heard of such a vivid description of WWI. That was just an amazing, and tragic, recounting of his experiences.
Great interview, really. Can't imagine what it's like to go through all of that at age 16, and just be able to accept it all matter of fact. Thanks for posting.
Jack passed away at 97, four years after this interview. May his soul rest in peace.
Remarkable awareness and diction for a 94 year old.
Rest easy, Mr Jack Campbell.
The rats, thats one thing that is never talked about a lot, the rats people and drowning in mud feet away from people, couldnβt imagine
My great grandpa Rudolph was a WW1 veteran. Born in Austria, but became an american citizen and went right back to fight in the trenches. He was alive into the 80s, but I don't remember him, despite my mother telling me we spent time with him when I was a child. He probably never would have spoken of his time in the big one, so it's nice to see someone around his age at the time telling his story
WW1 is the worst war in human history, period.
Thousands of people died every day in horrific scenario. And the living would face mustard gaz, mud, cold, rats, starvation, injury and death of the friends. And sometime, these people were just kids, as young as 14 years old.
On August 22 1914, a little more than 28 00 french soldiers died on a single day (including naval). On the same day, around 25 000 UK soldiers died, 10 000 german died, 2000 canadians and hundreds from other countries.
Can you freaking imagine waking up one day, opening Facebook and see on your newsfeed an article about 28 000 people from your country who died fighting a war?
During the whole war in Irak, there was 4 424 american deaths, and people were freaking out.
You know how they call the Battle of Verdun? The Meat Grinder. In the 303 days of this battle, close to 750,000 men died or were wounded or simply disappeared. That's around 2475 death per day. What the fuck man.
