you have to be the hero of your own story and you can do it on eyes you're not you're not someone who you respect you know you're doing what you got to do to get by but ultimately you're not respecting yourself and I think we all have a certain amount of appreciation and respect for hero figures you know I we all look at like the guy who never lies and it always does the right thing and [ __ ] helps everybody out and that's the John Wayne character you know that's that's the ultimate hero and he's like this is a battle that you will fight for the rest of your life but the key is to fight it not to give in don't give in to that resistance to fight just to fight that resistance and in doing so every day you do so you have won the battle for that day and you will continue to fight that battle and when you look at your own life and you don't stack up you're a thief you stole money from your wife's purse and you know you don't want to smoke cigarettes but you [ __ ] have to you can't deal with the stress and smoke you devalue yourself you slowly start devaluing yourself you look at yourself you realize that if you were judging yourself you would judge yourself on favor so no matter who you you can't pretend you're the the hero of your story you can be the hero of your own story that woke up today you can be the hero of your own story that at forty years of age stopped got out of bed and said I'm not doing this anymore only by my instincts and only by my morals and my ideals and my mind and I'm gonna be dead honest with myself because I'm realizing this is not gonna last forever and I'm gonna get myself in shape but I'm gonna eat healthy and I'm gonna do this cuz this is me this is me now [Music] I decide that this is me and people have to realize that you are not your past you are not all the times you [ __ ] up they're not all the times you were drunk that's not you but you you are the person who's learned from a great deal of experience when you're alone with your thoughts you get an idea of what your thoughts actually are if you live your life just acting constantly on the momentum of other people's expectations of you wanting to be liked by these other people you can run into a trap and you you you set up a life that you didn't really want your life is certainly some sort of a journey it's certainly some sort of a journey you're trapped in this situation where you have a mortgage you've got credit-card bills you've got student loans you have to pay you have a bunch of [ __ ] going on you have to continue to feed and all that and especially if you have a family and you have to feed them oh my goodness then you're fully locked in you can't take any chances whatsoever and oftentimes people make the mistake of getting stuck and it is just a tactical mistake just like it would be a mistake if you got stuck on a video game just like it would be a mistake if you followed a map incorrectly and you get stuck in the woods your life is certainly some sort of a journey it's certainly some sort of a journey and we have to all be aware that when we're making journeys we're not going to always make the right steps and sometimes you have to back up and try again and if you're in a position where you can't back up and try again you've trapped yourself as people define themselves by the past instead of thinking about who they are now instead of they they still look back at a mistake they made and don't just get past that mistake grow and learn but dwell on it think it defines them I mean there's definitely pitfalls in life you're gonna run into him we all are know you can learn and grow if you survive somewhere along the line they didn't face enough of the adversity to realize that there's sometimes you just got to get up and get [ __ ] done there's sometimes we have to [ __ ] pull yourself up and you have to push forward even if you want to stay in bed having that safety net just provided him with a way to stay in bed kept him weak of an opportunity every time things go wrong every time things feel terrible you have an opportunity to learn from whatever makes you feel terrible and never allow it to happen again push forward the system will set out honey pots for people to get trapped in the system will set out the ideas of retirement the ideas of the Golden Ears providing you benefits providing you a healthy work environment why well because they want people to work for them they don't want people to realize their own dreams and escape they want to set it up so that you stick around stick around some sort of an unsatisfying world it's up to you to see that video game problem to see that issue as it comes up on the map known I think this is a right turn to see all the problems that could potentially lay in front of you and calculate your your future and then also look around all the people that didn't do it and look at the misery that they're in and learn it you don't want to be like them and most people get stuck in these patterns or they define themselves on the person who doesn't follow through on their ideas or a person who doesn't pursue the real interests in loves you define yourself by that well you know I guess when I start things and I quit no you don't know you have started things and you quit and it gives you a horrible sense of regret that's made you define yourself by that you don't have to do that I look back on anything I've ever done mistakes I've ever made a path so I you know what something I put out that I didn't quite yeah maybe I just waited three months before I released that or maybe I should have you know rieta to that blog post a couple more times for I put it online or things that I've done have driven me crazy but yelling at someone I didn't have to yell at them for whatever but the most important thing is always for all people to recognize you you're not who you were a year ago you're not who you were five years ago you're not who you were last week so you gotta regulate how much you dwell on regrets of the past you really got to be careful it's also directly proportionate to the amount of hardships that people face in life their ability to face hardships you know and there's a lot of folks that live life on a cushy cloud of marshmallows and [ __ ] and then one day something goes wrong and then look at the people that are have kind of took an chances and navigated their way what did they do differently [Music] what insight into their own mistakes are they willing to delve into that you're not that you step back and good you know I don't still I just don't want to look at myself that closely but the person who's able to look at themselves the closest it's gonna get the more rational results they cut me two times across my right rib they caught me two times crossed my right PEC they cut me one time across the left side of my neck one time across the right side of my neck they cut me from the bottom of my armpit all the way down to the bottom of my hand and that they got through cutting on me they said son you're gonna be in this hospital for the next 40 days I walked out of the hospital on the third day they said you broke the record how did you do it and I said first and foremost the thing I want you all to understand I would never let a circumstance or a situation [Music] my mother got pregnant with me at 15 years old I grew up on the east side of Atlanta about five minutes away from the weather Atlanta Braves play and the neighborhood by the name of Kirkwood drugs gangs violence you name it and I came up in a two-bedroom home 14 people and I used to sleep on the floor my grandmother Miss Daisy Johnson she used to come to us and she was safe one night out of the week you all get the opportunity to sleep in the bed and so when I got to sleep in the bed it wasn't like I got the bed to myself and I'm like man I got the bed to myself it was 5:00 with my cousin's in the bed and so we slept three to the foot and three at the head and so as a kid pretty quick I had to make a decision of what I wanted to do with my life because in that same house I had eight uncles all eight of which are still going in and out of prison till this day because they sold drugs and they were engaged and so I looked at it it's kind of like that quote that says learn from the mistakes of other people because you can't make them or yourself and so I saw them selling drugs but it also saw the outcome and so I said I'm not selling drugs I'm not joining a gang because I see where that road leads to either I'm gonna end up better in prison I said to my best bet may be to go to the NFL and so I went to my cousin by the name of tomorrow said listen man I want to go to the NFL I feel our family deserves a better way of life let's work for I said we're gonna be patient we're gonna engage in consistent action every night and so every night you go out a new race light for the light board and kirkwood no shoes like your light pool every night and so one night we were getting ready and racing down the street came a big green pickup truck and it poured over to the side and out of it got a white guy first white guy ever saw in my life [Music] to story and my uncle Bobo just got sentenced to 40 years in prison he was in one pool my other uncle Johnny he was on the other corner my uncle Bobo took off running and looked at me said eight don't talk to him saying to me that guy has to be the Holy Ghost ray walked up to us nicest guy in the world he said you kids like to play organized sports I step to the front I said yes sir he said one house and get your guardian my uncle JJ was there I ran in house I said oh there's a guy outside he asked me like play organized sports I told him yes he said well I go in the house to get my body and I'm coming to get you will you please talk to Uncle say sure my uncle walked outside clothes tray said would you like to sign these kids up for organized sports my uncle said yes sir but I hate to tell you we don't have the money he said don't worry about the money you get him to the park and I'll take care that same guy still buys me drawers and socks until his day on Christmas and I'm 29 years old he started when I was 7 you see most nights after practice everybody would leave to go home and I always had to sit in the park because my mother worked that winning and my mother didn't get off work till about ten o'clock 10:30 Moshe nights and I'll be sitting there in the park and I loved it I don't want anybody to take me home because when I went home I was sleeping on the floor with ropes in the racks and so any time I got in solitude the dream any time I got in solitude to think about what I wanted to do for my family my community I took advantage of it and so most nights I'll be sitting there in the park and I'll be looking up at the light and I'll be a vision of myself doing things in the NFL envisioning myself doing things in my community and just after lights would always go out my mother she would pull up he's used to drive an old Buick Regal hubcaps off the car she's torn up the car was all beat up and she would pull up and she will put the car in park now always hop up I run over to my mother I will give her a hug and a kiss I would say mommy feed up can you please sit back in the car I have to do some extra drills I have to go to the NFL she will never have to work another day in your life and I knew she was done and every night my mother would say sure and she was set back in that car those claw like we did in that filter here you got a seven-year-old kid doing back there with drills running sprints running laps chasing his dream to go to the NFL and just beyond those car lights I could always connect with my mother's eyes and so it made me dig a little bit deeper it made me push myself a little bit further and made me work a little bit harder I lived by this thing called the harder you work the harder it is to surrender you see the reason people quit they don't take pride in what they do the harder you work the harder it is to surrender and one night my mother couldn't pick me up and she golf go straight she said coach I can't make you tonight can you please take inky on and so he put me in about eight guys in the back of his pickup truck and he said can we drop you on flat and so when he got to my house I got out on the sidewalk and I'm standing in front of 125 one Street and I looked back at coach Trey and I said why why are you doing this because where I came from people didn't just help you it was I pat you on your back you got to Pat me on my back you remember I did that for you you got to do this for me and I said why are you doing this and he looked back at me and Sun Sun I want to tell you something and he said I don't want you to ever forget it he said son the more you make sure that somebody else's life is okay God will always make sure that your life is over you you and I will never forget I got the high school and nobody in my family had ever been to college they all dropped out ending up in prison my high school the name of her scrim High School in Atlanta they used to call it crime hottie she shook teachers and my first day I walked through the metal detector and a cop was standing on the other end of the metal detector and he said what is your plan little man I said my plan is to go to division one he said know you'll probably go to cellblock D 1 I said no you got the wrong guy he said I heard that before your uncle's came through and said the same thing I said no I'm telling you you got the wrong guy you know the first person I went to see when I got my scholarship paper but you know the most amazing thing happened it wasn't that I went to college I had three little cousins sleeping on that same floor that went to college I saw friends in my community come off the corner from selling drugs and go to college I saw friends in my community come out of gangs and go to college all because I shifted my mindset and it wasn't about me I wrote generational curses in my community because it wasn't just about me I didn't care so much about what going to college I wanted the ones coming behind me to get [Music] and I got my scholarship up to Tennessee and they looked at me when I first said campus 135 pound kids soaking wet in the SCC and the first reporter he asked me he said inky johnson do you even think you're gonna play at the university of tennessee he said your 135 pounds I said not only am I gonna play I'm gonna start I say you made a mistake I said see what you don't understand and this is what most people do they based judgment off of what they can see what they don't understand the moments that make you who you are the moments that they can't see you see anybody can be on their best behavior when somebody is standing over their shoulder watching them seeing if they're gonna do what they're supposed to do but what they're reported in cuc he can see I came from Krim high we can see I was 135 pounds you can see i was 5-9 he can see all of the stats if you see all of that but what he never saw was when I was in the poke of my mother when I was seven years old she was sitting at Peoria at 10:30 at night what he didn't see was every Saturday morning at 5:30 I was up running two miles to a fire station and two miles back home what he didn't see was every time I slept on that floor Wilson ranch with my cousin's I got up every morning went to school and never made one excuse what he didn't see was all Christmas Eve when a cop when a guy came through me and my cousin's window and he stuck the nine-millimeter in a 45 minute bonfire face and took all of our Christmas gift and we had to stand on the curb and I mother told us y'all just be great he didn't see that and those were the moments that made me who I am and so now his opinion then matter his opinion would never become my reality and my freshman year playing special teams Sawa see the game broke starladder you know the first person I went to see at media day and I'll never forget my sophomore season I finally made it to the point in my life where I felt as if everything in my life was lining up spiritually I was getting the cycle life was in shape on track to graduate in three years life was in shape education I still remember the day I was in the film room watching film and I was watching the California bears him my defensive back coach lavish Slade came in the room he said inky johnson I got some good news for you and I dropped the clicker I said coach what is it he said son you're a projected top 30 driving he said all you have to do is play these next 10 football games your automatic multi-millionaire I ran out of the room I got on the phone I called my mother my grandmother I said listen I said after this season we were never struggling I said we would never miss another mill I said after this season our lives are about to change forever and little did I know our lives really about to change [Music] you [Music] first game we come out play against California bears I get an interception we shut him down we get the victory second game we're playing against Air Force he gets late in the game found ourselves in the dogfight quarterback drop back he released the ball to the running back coming down my sideline now poster tackle like I approach any other tackle and the way I'm approaching it he them a knock you out are you gonna knock me out of 165 pounds I can't play with anybody but at the point of contact when I hit this guy something different happened and it never happened to me before my life I hit him and it seemed as if every breath of my body left my body went completely limp I fell to the ground I blacked out I never forget with my eyes open my teammates ran over to me my first guy that was over was drive me or the middle linebacker for the Patriots one of my best friends and he said ain't get up the scope I said I can't he said what do you mean you can't you're out of lockdown cloner we need you let's go I said I can't move I said there's a shot going through my whole body I can't feel anything man when the scariest moments of my life in a shock eventually left and they stayed in my right arm in hand I remember as I was lying there I flipped my head to the left and I could see the doctors and the trainers running onto the field and I felt my head up to the sky and I said God I said surely nothing that's happened in this moment that can alter my life I flipped my head back over to the left they were bringing his fine boy down I flipped my head up to the sky state guard I said that's precautionary measures right they get me up on the spine boy they're willing me off the field and I looked at the doctor because I couldn't feel my right arm they had poked me with all type of needles and he can you feel this can you feel like coming full of thing and I said doc can you can you lift my right arm in hand he said sure ain't can he raised it up and I lift in my left and I pumped the Trump supporters I guess he was bringing my arm down I looked at the doctor I said okay I said I'll be back never thinking that would be the last game that I would ever play in my life they get me an analyst things turn up but not that still don't pay any mind they get me over to the hospital saying key we're gonna take you back to us and cat-scans they took me back they ran the cat scans and they rolled me back into my room and I'll never forget it all in about a 15 second timeframe I was lying there in my bed and I can see over my right shoulder and I looked at my father and we caught eyes and my father he went to take his step in and he looked at me and said son I can't do it and he walked out my mother she came in she was running she kissed me on my forehead she said a friend she saying everything's gonna be okay and she ran out and as soon as my mother stepped outside of the room the doctor rushed in from the opposite side he said hey get in here we got rushed just got back to emergency surgery he's about to die I said what I said my mom just told me everything that's going to be okay like this total opposite you talking about I'm about to die I said what happened he said so what happened you have busted up to play me an artery in your chest you're bleeding internally I have to rush you back and take the main vein out of your left leg and plug it into your chest and orally save your life and when I woke up from recovery the same doctor standing over me say inky has some good news and some bad news for ya so you got some bad news for him after telling us about to die I'm still alive how bad can it get him still he said the good news is son you saved your life I said thank you sir he said the bad news is you have nerve damage and your right shoulder Saku he said we gotta sing up to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota I said cool he said what the problem is think you probably can never play the game of football again in your life I said no way he said yeah ain't you got something pretty bad nerve damage I said no I said doc no disrespect man but I I'm eight games away like doc don't disrespect but this is about the my family's life doc I've been working for this ever since I was seven years old doc there's no way God not now like let me make it to the NFL suck and help my family first like that we miss little and you're talking about my three cat and right now like no way and I snap out of it I said man I never cheated I said there's no way I've never cheated I've never cheated myself I gave everything I had to it and I respected it I never cheated there's no way that my career could be over I said send me up to the Mayo Clinic and after several visits I'll never forget this is when reality set in it was me my mother my father in a room and the doctors came in they said inky johnson ears to do they said son you have torn all the nerves in your brachial plexus and say your brachial plexus are the nerve roots that go from your spine and they come down and they control your shoulder your arm in your hand they say you have torn them at all levels it cannot be rebuffed it says something yet to tell you what you're on it would never be the same again your hand it would never be the same again son you've never played the game of football [Music] [Music] and the next morning I walked into the doctor's office they said someone what option did you choose I said no disrespect to you doctor I'm not choosing an option my situation is out he and it said cut with the cute talk I said no disrespect to you doc cut me where you got to cut me my situation is out of your hands I'm not choosing enough I said I know and so I went back to school the next week after they had just saved my life I was back in class I had to learn how to write all over again how to walk all over again that Laura tougher shoot all over again and learn how to bathe all over again I can learn how to live life all over again never one time did I say let me go home I need a break I'm going to the training room I said I need some time off can you all just give me a little leave time I need to go back home I need some time off my life just changed last week and they came to me and they say inky go home we know how much the game of football meant to you I said yeah you know how much the game of football meant to me but you don't know how much like me you see the thing we have to understand about everything that we're a part of first and foremost is a blessing by God and when it's a blessing you can't help but to give everything you've got to it I'm like God saying I got spared my life almost died the doctor came to me on a film it was all one meaning grab my wrist he said son you don't have a pulse I don't even know how you still left and my last doctor's they came to and they said sorry inky johnson you will never be able to use this on my hand again in your life I said no disrespect to you doctor I'll use this all in his hand every day for the rest of my life by the way that I live my life every day I'm gonna impact someone's life every day I'm gonna empower someone every day I'm gonna inspire someone every I'm gonna encourage some [Music] [Music] I live by this thing called empty bucket and when people hear it they think is a cute slogan empty the bucket but what they don't understand it's the unspoken law empty the boat working it's an unspoken law of accountability and responsibility to me on this heard from my existence and everybody is connected to me I may be crazy but I don't know I just believe that I supposed to give everybody that's connected to me the best version of me I just believe I deserve to get my wife and my children the best version of me I just believe the people that I was serviced to in this earth I deserve to give them the best version of me everybody wants to prize but nobody loves to process everybody wants to be a champion but nobody's willing to put in the work that it takes to be a champion everybody wants to hold up the trophy and say man I did it but nobody's willing to put in the work that it takes to do it I love the process I love the thought of working for what I wallet and I firmly believed you never supposed to wish for it more than you're willing to work for it your expectations never supposed to exceed your effort but a lot of people they wish and they're not willing to work and the great thing about life life has a funny way of just in all of us and seeing how bad we really want what it is that we say we want because the thing I know about people people can talk to talk and people do it very well but life is going to hit you with a certain level of opposition life is going to hit you with a certain level of that bursty and life is going to say to you you said you wanted it now let's see how bad you really want it but the great thing about it if you left the process when opposition in that verse he hits you will have a way of embracing it and using it not only for yourself when you were use it to make everybody that's connected to you stronger because your vision has to be larger than yourself if everything that you do is just about doing for your personal gain something's gonna come up against you that's gonna be a lot tougher than you and if it's just about you the moment you hit it you're gonna quit and give up every time [Music] you know protocol they called me in the world they say Inc is a speaker Inc is a motivational and whatever the case may be inky whatever whatever it is what they don't understand I'm into people's business not a speaker I'm a server anybody that has direct contact with people on a daily basis that is an opportunity to change someone's life I never pass up an opportunity to be of encouragement to other people don't ever pass up an opportunity to inspire someone who never pass up an opportunity to empower someone who never pass up an opportunity to show someone love because the thing about it my room like you can see this you can see my arm my wound is visible but it's a lot of people in this room that are wounded and you can't see listen turn and so the opportunities that we pass up to be a blessing to other people we can save their life with just one encounter when we talk about me too we when we talk about process over product when we talk about sweat equity when we talk about better together do we really understand what that means because sometimes the thing about life life always comes along when we make up our mind and try to distract us but truth be told we all know that we're stronger together I have been working my whole life and what I didn't understand by being determined to chase something by being committed to it and what commitment is commitment is staying true to what you said you were going to do long after the move that you have set it in that's left you see people think commitment is saying yes I'll do it on the days when they felt good but I've been committed to everything that I ever started in my life and I never stopped and I never quit it and so by being committed to everything that I started I finished it if not the certain type of spirit it built the certain type of mentality and built the certain type of individual and so now I couldn't quit even if I wanted to I couldn't lay in the bed even if I wanted to I couldn't stop even if I wanted to I had too much sweat equity in my life and everything that I was doing because I understood my existence wasn't about me I went from me to we a long time ago I understood the process is more important than the product it wasn't about the outcome for me once I made it to the NFL or not that was inconsequential and God's plan for my life but I was going to fall in love with that process because I understood by falling in love with that process it was going to turn me into a machine there was suffering and I was waiting like 297 pounds and I had to make a change in my life you know I was at all-time low and I wasn't going anywhere and I was exactly what everybody said I was going to be which was nothing so I had to make a change [Music] you're scared kid and the only way I could find myself was to put myself through the worst thing possible I'm gonna say the exact opposite of what the world today's world is saying in the end like what would your advice be to that 16 year old kid of staring in the mirror does not like what he sees but is still running from adversity well my biggest advice to him is that first of all he won't like what I say to him and I'm gonna say the exact opposite of what the world today's world is saying so we read a bunch of books nowadays as humans we we want to find out how to be someone else what we don't do we don't go inside so literally turn yourself inside out read the book that says that's like we're writing a book every day of our lives but we never read that book so what I would challenge this young man or young woman to do is you have to look inside of yourself and see what you really want what are you passionate about we use these words and these little phrases up only the strong survive and also the crap they're all just [ __ ] words I get so tired of hearing people just talking that right now someone may think God is just talking but you don't know me so when I speak I speak from Pasha I speak from experience I speak from suffering I want to tell this young man and woman that the only way I believe this is just my experience in life the only way you're ever going to get to the other side of this journey is you have got to suffer to grow to grow you my suffering and some people get it something wrong [Music] so long story short what I realized was no one was here to help me and the feeling I had every morning I started saving my heaven on 16 years old and the feeling I had every morning I looked in the mirror was horrible and I don't want to feel like that anymore and how I felt was a kid going nowhere a kid that was scared and most kids will accept that and look for help but the best thing that happened to me no one helped me no one felt sorry for me no one looked at me and said like this day and age they'll they'll take you in and they'll tell you bye stop picking on this person back then any care we're all we are all great no matter if if you think you're dumb and maybe think you're fat no matter you are fat no matter if you've been bullied or no matter if you just got back from Iraq or Afghanistan and you have no legs or your arms or whatever man we all have greatness it just you got to find the courage you got to find the courage to put your Bose headphones on and silence the noise out of this world and to find it in the final cut is out there but it's going to take hard work courage self-discipline it's gonna take all the non-cognitive skills all the non-cognitive skills to be great you know smart is good all the stuff is good that's all cognitive it's the non-cognitive skills that sets you apart from everybody else and and that's what it's all about I I lied for people to accept me because I did accept myself so I would make up stories so that you would accept me into your world I would uh everything I did was for someone else to like me it wasn't I started reading my own book about how pathetic I was as human being I could burn my dad I can blend kids at school I could blame having health issues ATD my mom not being around great mom but she was doing her thing I could blame a lot of people and that's the book I was reading and I put it off on everybody else it was until I said no what for me to fix this I get a read what the hell what the [ __ ] is wrong with David God wasn't going to be a pumpkin on my life so in a way I could turn around was to suffer i had to build calluses in my brain the same way I built calluses on my hands so I brought the games but the world's records for post a long time ago but I felt in it twice and I did 67,000 pull-ups in trying to break this record so to do four thousand thirty pull-ups I had to do 67 thousand for training for that Wow and so what I realized is for me the man I wanted to become I saw myself as the weakest person God ever created but I never blamed God for anything he did to me so I wanted to change that to be the hardest man ever created and by that I don't know but he had to have a goal and my goal when I was sitting there not going to school being bullied being having no self-esteem my goal was the only person that's gonna turn this person around is me you know I can't turn around has put myself through the worst things possible a human being can ever endure and I'd be the only way that I can build this brain to handle anything that comes in front of it callus in my mind doing pain and suffering but they have to see what their journey is to start their journey several people live to be a hundred years old and they have great lives and they have great kids the kids go to college and all sort of stuff but somewhere in their life there was a point where they had a decision to make they can go left or right on this path left was the easy route right was a hard route a lot of people take the easy route and they had a good life that way but the better life was going to the right side a human being is not so human anymore we have the ability to go in such a space if you're willing to suffer and I mean suffer your brain and your body once connected together can do anything motivation comes and goes when you're driven whatever's in front of you will get destroyed and you may have twenty years of pain and suffering to get past it but a lot of us die never truly starting our journey and I will tell this young person you got to start your journey it may suck but it will it will come out the other side where you're coasting I stopped listening to people who are calling you fat gay transsexual [ __ ] everything that is makes no sense all these insecure people put their insecurities on you you got to flush it out you got to just be whoever the hell God or whatever the hell you believe in if you believe in nothing but yourself I don't care what it is you're gonna take everything and throw it away you have to believe in one thing and that is yourself [Music] [Music] my biggest advice to give everybody in the world is like I say we live in an external world everything is is you got to see it touch its external if you can for the rest of your life live inside of yourself and people may listen to this and say this guy is sadistic he's crazy no if you know how I came up you realized I was just a scared kid that found drive and passion to be something much better than what he thought that's all it is even the hardest men in times of suffering what we do was we forget how hard we really are that's what suffering is suffering is a test it's all of it suffering is the true test of life self-talk and visualization are two keys to my success the very bestest did I leave everything inside of me out there so attacking is not like all when a wind there's a wind matter he's the best the best is I'm running to get himself and everything I did I attacked myself I'm always questioning myself [Music] [Music] so the things that we run from we run it from the truth we're running from the truth man so the only way I became successful was going towards the truth as painful and as brutal as it is it changed me it allowed me to become in my own right Who am today [Music] when you look in the mirror that's the one person you can't logic so every morning I would shave my head thank God I reflect back on some of the lies I may have told somebody or some of the ways I acted I ain't feel comfortable doing and I did it to impress other normal people the key word there is normal everyday people I was trying to make other people like me how pathetic is that [Music] your skin become more of a human being don't be afraid of the reflection in the mirror because that's all you can be afraid of once you overcome the reflection in the mirror you've done it [Music] but if you can get through to doing things that you hate to do on the other side is greatness that's what people are thinking by me running I am callous in my mind I'm not training for a race I'm training for life I'm training for the time and I get that two o'clock in the morning call that my mom is dead or something happens tragic in life I don't fall apart I'm training my mind and my body my spirit so it's all one so I can handle what Michaels gonna throw at me because the life I've lived at those are old bugs actions and if you're not physically immensely prepared for that there's been a coma and you're good for nobody but the mentality of a warrior is very different you know mentality you must be that person on that door Oh get ready to open it thinking to yourself if I die so be the only way you can go in that door there's no there's a great chance you're gonna die hoping your mother-fucking going home because they're gonna remember you by slowly opening and peeking in so if you're gonna open it and you made them on to open it don't crack it open open the [ __ ] door go in that's with life if you choose if you choose to do something attack it because they're gonna remember you as not attacking it so I want to be remembered you can hate me but one thing you can't say about me I didn't attack it so that's them attired you have if you're gonna do something you might as well attack it hopefully I can help people that believe that they're much less than what they truly are help them find greatness in themselves and greatness isn't running tours of miles at a time or doing 4,000 folks are being a seal greatness is whatever the hell you dreamed of in your own mind you got to first see it you gotta first create this vision in your mind and then that's when I come into play once you create this vision in your mind it's how am I gonna get there and that's we're not coming to play but first you got to create your own vision and it's not externally it's the the busines creating is inside of you so until you create that I'm nobody to you never ever think small if you're going to accomplish anything you have to think big you have to go and shoot for the stars the biggest challenge most people have is because they think small and the reason why people think small and why did you choose small little goals is because they are afraid to fail they know that if you shoot for big goal then the chances of failing are very high and they are afraid of failing is one of the most common things why people are frozen and by the kidman make a move in life because they're scared of failing I say to myself hey I'm not worried about failing because that's part of life you're not gonna be going win everything and how far can you fall look at this this is the ground that's as far as I can fall and you know something that the only time you really consider the failure is if you fall and you don't get up but if you get up you're never considered a failure so I never considered myself a failure I always consider myself a winner even though FL every so often but I always got up and I always move forward this is the important thing I never had any patience of course for Smita thinking small it was something think of all out and do it well and this just not just the case in bodybuilding I didn't just want to be a bodybuilding champion I wanted to be the greatest bodybuilder four times I wonder that's the most muscle the the most most of all times the most definition I wanted to win the most trophies the most World Championship titles I just wanted to be the best and the same is also in movies I didn't you think about being in movies no I wanted to be a movie star I want to off the tidal building I wanted to become the highest paid entertainer I basically wanted to be another John Wayne what's wrong with that [Music] [Music] [Music] there I go people ask me all the time what is the secret to success [Music] the thing that can give you the long version here and the long version is that I actually always had five rules and everything that I did always use those five rules and those five rules helped me to become successful in various different areas and I think I believe that those rules can be applied to almost anyone and everyone you don't need to be a bodybuilding champion you either need to want to be a Governor of California or there be an action here or anything like that if you want to excel in whatever you do those rules are for you it's that simple I think that we all here like to be successful and we are driven so that's why those rules apply to you so my first rule is find your vision and follow it you see I think it's the most important thing that we have a very clear vision of where we go a goal where do we go because you can have the best ship in the world you can have the best cruise liner but if the captain does not know where to go that ship will drift around the world and out there that sea and we'll never end up anywhere and this is exactly the way it is in real life if you don't have a core if you don't have a visually just drift around you're not gonna be happy this is why it is so important to have that vision now I created that vision in Austria because I grew up after the Second World War the problem was that everyone was so depressed because they lost the war that there was alcoholism everywhere there was of course depression there was a terrible economic situation there was famine there was starvation and all those things and also it was kind of a little place and narrow I felt kind of I wanted to get out of there I wanted to escape and I couldn't see myself really do work there in the stadia to work in the factory of the work and the farm although even the follow my father's footsteps to become a police officer I couldn't see that either Sam I think that's what my parents wanted me to do but that's not what I saw this was the vision of my parents but not mine and luckily one day in school I watched a documentary about America and I found myself I knew exactly that is where I wanted to end up I wanted to be in America everything that I saw that the commander just loved everything was so big I remember the tall skyscrapers the monstrous bridges the giant freeways filled with beautiful cars the huge jet liners movie stars Muscle Beach and all of those things I could not wait to get there the question was just how do I get there how do I get the America I mean it's just not a common thing do way back in the 50s no one had the money to travel or anything but one day I was fortunate enough to see a magazine and Dead magazine showed me the path to America and it was a bodybuilding magazine and on the cover was this very muscular guy that was standing there like Hercules with the Hercules outfit his name was Reggie Park this reg Park was on the cover and I remember the cover said mr. universe becomes Hercules star I read the article as fast as I could learning about how he grew up in Leeds in England poor in how he trained five hours a day every single day and trained and trained and trained and lifted weights and then he finally became mr. Great Britain and then he became mr. universe at any one a second mr. Universe title in the third mr. Universe title and an over set and he landed in Rome in kinoshita doing Hercules movies and there he made millions of dollars and this this money he took he bought himself a gymnasium chain in South Africa he became a successful gymnasium owner in a syrette I became more and more certain about my own future as I read this story I was so excited some interest that I knew exactly that I wanted to become another reg Park I know he laid out the blueprint for my life basically I could see myself I could visualize myself clearly to be a champion on that same stage where he wanted mr. universe and then to move to America then get into movies and then become rich and famous I had that vision very clearly laid out I was so happy that I knew exactly where I was going from that moment on everything that I did no matter how hard I had to work or how much I had to struggle it didn't matter it was a wonderful joyride because I knew what the purpose was and I found my passion the simple truth is if you don't have a vision if you don't have a goal if you don't see your future laid out in front of you you're just floating around without a purpose and I think that the numbers speak for themselves this is why so many people around the world are unhappy with their jobs I mean in America 74% of the people hate their job and would like to change jobs now think about that that means that only a quarter of the Americans love their life's work I mean that is a very depressing statistic I always smile when I worked no matter how hard I work I always had a great time no matter what I did it didn't matter what was in bodybuilding or if it was in the movies of it was as governor I remember in the pumping iron days people asked me in the gym all the time why are you smiling all the time why are you so happy you have to lift 50 tons of weights you have to Train 5 hours a day I mean I look at the other bodybuilders faces and lifters faces and they look kind of depressing they look sour they're miserable that they have to lift weights you don't look miserable you look happy and I'd tell them always they say I smile because I know exactly that every rep that I do there every set that I do every weight did I live to get one step closer to turning that vision of mine into reality and becoming that mr. universe I could not wait to lift another 500 pounds in the squats I could not wait to do another thousand sit-ups I could not wait to do bench press more bench presses more girls until I couldn't move my arms anymore because I knew that every rep got me closer to standing on that stage as a champion as a matter of fact when I lifted weights I didn't really feel like I was lifting weights I felt like I was lifting a trophy over my head each time I lift it and they'll have all those bodybuilders around me and thousands of people screaming and I tell you that this vision didn't just help me in bodybuilding it helped me in everything like I said I remember in a movie business there were as many times stunts that they had to do we I got hurt that was in pain in agony and had the good over and over again I remember one incident specifically on Conan the Barbarian there there I was crawling on all four and rocks over rocks and gravel holding my sword right in front of me and as I was crawling the camera followed me it was around 30 feet that the crawl on this rocks and his gravel and eventually after ten takes my elbows my knee started bleeding and hurting and the director came to me sheepishly and said to me says do you mind if we do another take I need a close-up of you and I said him no I don't mind at all I said going to as many takes as you want this is none I don't want to do that because I know you're in pain you're beating I said no no I don't feel any pain I say the only thing I see is the finished scene [Music] this is why I did not feel that pain I did not care if I was bleeding on my knees because I know that pain is temporary but the film is permanent and I explained that to the director so this is why I try to tell you always discover your vision and the rest will follow [Music] [Music] [Music] I think so many people are keyboard activists right everybody's good at sending a tweet about how the world should be and nobody's doing anything about it and that just that is just very much human nature we've gotten soft as a culture yes you know I mean of course we've gotten soft as a culture in the u.s. because the US has had an incredible two hundred year run right like this is just what happens you know so as a culture you know I can't speak for you know people that live in the Amazon River and I can't speak for you know people that still live in Belarus but the the American culture is soft and that's a great thing that means there's been enormous amounts of prosperity but let's not be naive I mean people literally complain when somebody gives them the wrong amount of like extra cream in a Starbucks $6 coffee [Music] my lack of interest in complaining is so high and when I watch what people complain about it breaks my heart because they completely lack perspective and i genuinely believe my happiness and optimism comes from my perspective even in political unrest times like right now a lot of people very bent out of shape but the reality is is that it just never been better to be a human being it's that's just the truth that's just data that's that's reality and yeah I mean it's just a very fun time to be alive and I think the way people look at the world right now because it's such an incredible time is actually the quickest tell to who they are if you think it sucks but it's bad you have losing pessimistic DNA and if you think it's awesome and phenomenal you have optimistic winning DNA and I believe that to be true and so that's where rap we're beating ourselves up like everybody sucks at something right like we all have shortcomings and we all have strengths and for me it's like why don't we just audit that like why don't we just look at it that way and be like alright well I'm good at this but I'm not good at that like and then and then and then I only focus what I'm good at right like I don't dwell that I can't fix [ __ ] around the house I call somebody to fix it like I'm not like I'm not a man I don't give a [ __ ] like you know like like you know like I don't I don't get it like we all like I also think it's awesome that I'm so emotionally stable and I'm the emotional backbone of everybody is that what a dude's supposed to do like like these cliches these stereotypes they're so silly I'm fully in love with myself but I'm also fully in love with everybody else too right it's not like like it goes both ways like I tell people to buy into me that work for me it's cuz I buy into them first like I don't need anybody to gain trust with me I it's there like I believe that the human race is so grossly underrated we are good of course we have some bad there's [ __ ] 7 billion of us but like when you look at our net score it's bonkers [ __ ] like you know what damage we can be doing to each other on a hourly basis and we don't like we're still here like we won were the alpha being and we've figured out how to stay together this is insane when you think about it and yet everybody wants to dwell on like somebody said something mean if you want to be an anomaly you have to act like one like people want all these special things to happen but then they're acting like everybody else and that gets into this Saturdays on in your 20s like or or just like taking risks or things of that nature like there's anything they take away it's like look like you're gonna only be so pretty you're only gonna be so smart like you like there's there's things that are gonna land there's things that you can actually control I do believe and I don't know if I'm right or wrong I don't but I do believe that work ethic is a taught behavior it's something you do have more control over and you know what really sealed the deal for me getting healthier I was 38 years old and he didn't come natural to me like it didn't come natural to me at all I hate the gym I hate him out I hate it I don't like it I don't want to do it but I but I knew it was important and somewhere around midway through being 38 years old I got serious I figured out my system I made the financial commitment and I've won right and I'll never lose again because the system was I needed to be accountable to another human being so it was about Mike and now Jordan and whoever else is my trainer I'm doing it almost weirdly more to not let them down I feel like there's a shift that can make people work harder the big one that I push is you're gonna die like like if your complaint like to me life is broken down into complaining and not so if you're not complaining well then I know I've no advice for you I'm pumped like you did it like like I've friends who make $42,000 a year work 9:00 to 4:00 kind of with an hour to have lunch and 45 minutes of YouTube and ten minutes of bullshitting and an hour of complete waste of time in a meeting so the kind of working like six you know hours a week right but they're pumped and and and they text me these are high school friends and they'll text me like how happy they are to be the culture their kids baseball team and you know like that's amazing like that seems very obvious to me like that's like that's right you know which is super weird I'm actually merely envious you know like I it sounds cool like in theory right grass is always greener right like far less pressure you know like like all that time with my kids booth that would be cool like there's just like all these things that I can justify so to me but I have friends who have 100 million dollars in the bank because of Facebook's IPO who complain who are still hungry who want to do even more who will complain to me because they know I work a lot about no work-life balance and they don't get to spend enough time with their family and I'm like we have a hundred million dollars like you could stay home like you're in control like you don't complain about it you've made that choice don't [ __ ] me like you want to spend more time with your family spend more time with your family I'm trying to be very careful about what I'm saying versus what I'm doing because that's how you get exposed and I don't mean like people calling you out and being like you suck I mean to yourself I don't want to be exposed by myself it's it's it's looking yourself in the mirror and saying like am I doing this right so to me there's so many people there talking [ __ ] about how big of an entrepreneur they're gonna be and how much they're gonna achieve and they don't work on weekends you know I worked every Saturday of my twenties like and I took a 20 year old entrepreneurs every single day lately I've been saying to them this Saturday you're gonna have more time off than I've had in my entire 20s on a Saturday so like before you tell me how you're gonna be bigger than me start thinking about what you're actually doing [Music] I'm careful to not give advice that I know is uniquely something that I was gifted with like I'd how do I tell you that oh here's how it actually works and it almost started happening it didn't happen like I actually get goosebumps like actually like real heavy goosebumps when I hear something that I know feels right what's the advice there hey Johnny start getting goosebumps like I can't there's certain things that I can't talk about because I know they're not practical they're intuitive to me [Music] I plan to instill kindness and elegance I plan on instilling perspective into my kids I plan in instilling just being a good human being I plan on making sure they don't use their parents wealth and micro fame and leverage to impose upon any other person I was petrified of that if my kids try to Punk their friends on my [ __ ] I'm gonna beat the [ __ ] out of them like that just loser DNA you didn't do that we right like so like I'm not obsessed with tactics I'm obsessed with religion so I have a lot of wealthy friends at this point who think it's smart for them to sit first class but the kids in coach it's a tactic they send their kids to Africa to build a school for a week it's a tactic it's like my friends that love the environment the number two sector in the world that is hurting the environment is the fashion industry when you run the math of what's doing bad to the earth it's the number two industry behind Gaza I I don't even want to say because I'm not sure if it's gas and oil the number two industry the sign of the fact is the fashion industry so all my fancy friends who love the environment are they willing to give up their [ __ ] louis bags let's say right so like i think people talk [ __ ] so you let them sit coach and you went first class but you went to you know hawaii and eat it all the best pluck you can't pick and choose to me it's binary so i don't want to be a hypocrite so my big thing is like look you need to be kind like mean mean is just non-negotiable in our family right and then you just need to not be full of [ __ ] if you want to look at daddy's mountain and you want to say what I did to my dad's and that was a big mountain for an immigrant like Wow dad did it right if you want to say I'm gonna climb that and I'm gonna climb bigger awesome like I'm pumped I'm weirdly not cheering for you cuz I'm I'm just a really competitive dude this is actually something I'm not proud of I'm comfortable saying this and I believe this is a flaw but I don't want my kids to be me I don't like I don't saying it I know this is where I get in trouble people will take one little clip from one video interview and they're like you're a bad eye it's just my truth I don't want to [ __ ] you guys like I'm that competitive I just want them to be all in on them right like I don't need them to be an entrepreneur I don't need them to make me proud they don't need to go to Harvard they don't need to give [ __ ] they need to be themselves all in and they need to be kind and I'm good like everybody thinks their stuff is so good like everyday Gary my Instagram is so on fire soda awesome why is nobody like why am I not gaining followers because it's not awesome think we all think our stuff is the best and like I get that but yeah that would be my advice only because that also is liberating me everything's about breathing right like to me everything is about like take full ownership for everything and then everything gets easy because then you're in control and then learn how to love to lose I think that's how that's how entrepreneurship that's how life is we all have losses and so I like losses I love adversity I like the climb I like the chip on my shoulder I like when people like all I knew and he's not that good that is like like I'm even weirdly scared as I continue to ascend and I'm getting popular and wouldn't you say the marketing leaning like if people start putting these words in front of my name I'm like am I gonna sabotage myself to like recorrect this like I like adversity so yeah all on me you know I enjoy losses now all of a sudden like what you become completely invincible I feel invincible I really genuinely outside of the health of myself and 20 people feel 100% invincible as a person I know what my intent is I want to do good at nobody else's expense I'm far from perfect we all are and so just easy it feels very light to live life I'm just in a good mood [Music] them home and I think modern-day parents and most parents do not do that I think they focus on dumb [ __ ] like grades because they are insecure and they want to put the bumper sticker that their kid went to you know Stanford like it's real [ __ ] up when you really think about what's actually happening so much of it is misery loves company or people reflecting of what's inside of them [Music] is the impact that you want to have on the world same thing that attracts so many of millions of people to people that are selling [ __ ] those same people are attracted to me and what I want to do is suffocate out all those other people and become the Alpha of that entire world of people that are are hoping and are desperate to look at me and what I want to do is inspire two 14 year old girls in Kansas City right now to build a billion dollar company on having a bunch of employees hugging each other in the halls I think that Steve Jobs came along became an icon but the sad part of that narrative was he did not treat his employees well he became an icon and the narrative became he got the most out of people by being a jerk and that became romanticized and a lot of people in Silicon Valley today run companies work they're mean because they think that's the right thing to do because they put Steve Jobs on a pedestal I want my pedestal moment I want to become that big and what I want to come from that is that kids that aren't even born today think that they can build a five billion dollar company and be a great guy or great gal I want to build the biggest building in town ever by just building the biggest building in town while I think most people try to tear down everybody else's building so I think positivity and is practical advice to building an empire and I want to be the poster child and the person that don't biggest baddest empire and did it by being a good dude along the way and not everybody's gonna be happy about everything I did but if it's the 97% of people talking good behind your back that's a real legacy and I want to do it in a pop culture way I'm gonna do it anyway people have done that before just so you know it's plenty of people Warren Buffett's a really good dude like there's plenty of people that have done that there's a difference I want to do it and I want to be a rock star right like and that's where you influence people like you know like I want to do it but I also want to be the most popular and so then that person's like oh I want to be him so I guess I'll be nice like I want to literally take people who have DNA that's kind of nice and make them more nice because they think that's how I became big so I basically want to trick the business world into becoming kinder [Music] you
