hey everyone thanks for checking in I promise in just a moment a few moments you're going to see more footage similar to that opening preview hope you enjoy that this is going to be a review of the Mossberg 930 SPX tactical 12-gauge semi-automatic but in the market for a good semi-automatic 12-gauge for a few years now believe it or not my inventory up to this point it consisted of only pump guns primarily Mossberg and Remington it even a hybrid of that with a slug gun so sold on the brand's I considered some more higher dollar models fifteen hundred two thousand dollar range look as a Benelli and and others but settled on the Mossberg now I don't think this is gonna be a perfect 12-gauge there have been some known issues with cycling that's gonna be a big part of this video review and also manufacturing defects I think they've had more than their fair share and that tagged me as well we'll discuss more of that in just a moment but first let's look at the specs there are several variations of the 930 this is the tactical series product number eight five three seven zero overall length is 38 inches weight is seventy three quarter pounds it features an 18 and a half inch matte blue barrel this is a cylinder bore and holds seven plus one two and three quarter inch rounds 6 plus one three inch shells the aluminum receiver is lightweight but solid the self-regulated gas system assists with recoil at rate I've already noticed compared to my Mossberg 590 a one pump gun the large extended charging handle has been fantastic for quickly and smoothly loading as well as unloading unused shells the boat released extends approximately a quarter inch and while not oversized has appropriate dimensions for the task the tube loads quite easily another positive characteristic I've enjoyed with my 590 a one the optics rail is just under five inches long with two or three quarter inches of that in front of the LPA sight which we'll check out in just a moment the rail is where I had a quality defect as it was mounted off-center how that gets past QC I don't know the gun was special ordered through a distributor so the store's gunsmith graciously corrected the problem which wasn't noted until after my purchase and I had taken the gun home the top mounted safety is pushed forward for firing there is a cocking indicator on the front of the trigger guard as for the trigger itself it is factory set at five pounds this seems to be much lighter than my other malls bergs and I'll need to get used to it the lightweight synthetic stock includes the recoil pad distance from center of the recoil pad to tip of the trigger is 13 and three-quarter inches I had to decide between this or the non pistol grip model it wasn't a coolness factor for me but whether or not I felt this setup would improve my target acquisition and recoil control and now the sights which I feel are fantastic I keep mentioning my 590 a 1 but I've been very pleased with the go string rear sight front ramp setup on that model this is an upgrade the OPA ghost ring sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation the aperture is just under a quarter of an inch the front post is a our style and Rises one and a half inches above the top of the barrel the factory fiber-optic post doesn't glow on the dark but is most definitely easy to see and track in well-lit conditions I'm going to mess with your eyes for just a moment and try as best as possible to replicate how the sights line up for the human eye not an easy task to accomplish with this camcorder as I move the focus from the rear to front sight notice the brightness and clarity of that fiber-optic there are many nice features on this shotgun but the sights were a big selling point for me let's move on to more shooting now one issue that you might hear about with regard to the 930 SPX is inconsistency cycling low brass birdshot field loads things like that guess what that opening montage 100% low brass number six seven and a half seven and a half low recoil loads and also number eight I didn't have any issues at all in fact a majority of ammo I've run through this gun so far has been birdshot just for warming it up and in target practice things like that haven't had any problems at all now I could go out tomorrow and it could jam up on me but it has been 100% reliable the only low brass ammo that's giving me issues novelty loads such as dragon's breath and flechette ammo but I'm not going to be using that type of stuff or birdshot for home defense speaking of home defense let's move on to something a little heavier as in buckshot I have six different types of bug shots I'd like to run through pretty quickly two groups of three I'm gonna break it up the first one is federal two or three quarter inch shell number four buck this could be a good choice for situations where you're concerned about over penetration as opposed to double-aught buck Remington lower recoil double-aught buck 1,200 feet per second and then the number three in this group federal 3-inch shell also double-aught buck let's take on that first red target this is going to feel good only seven I'm happy with that ready for the second group and the first one's going to be military-grade double-aught buckshot two and three-quarter inch shell this is from Winchester number two is from Remington to a three-quarter inch shell triple ought buckshot that may be more of a hunting load that will give it a try and then the last one is going to be the PD X 1/2 or 3/4 inch this is a combination of double-aught buckshot there are three of those and one rifled slug work with this guy on the list Wow I like that group this last one in the group is the PDX one as I was taking the first shell out of the box it literally crumbled in my hand so that doesn't necessarily inspire confidence speaking of confidence up backed up just a little bit because I'm confident there is a slug in here and I'm also confident it could damage the steel so we're between 35 and 40 yards slow fire on this group and only four rounds I'm going to try and mix a buckshot to see how it affects the cycling I'm calling this compilation the pharmacy for all the good medicine that is about to be dispensed number six seven and a half eight for double-aught manage recoil double aught military grade triple aught and the three inch double aught I spend a lot of time on birdshot and buckshot I know you want to see some slugs three quick things one some of the remington low recoil this is one ounce slug two and three quarter inch shell just four or five shots with that and then a little bit of accuracy with two slugs the good old-fashioned foster slug from Winchester and also one that I really haven't done anything with this is the brennick a two and three-quarter inch ko slug I'm about 30 yards out okay let's wrap up with just a small sampling of accuracy or at least some potential accuracy let's start off with four foster slugs one ounce two or three quarter then I'll have four of the Brinegar ko slugs coming in right behind it go for the foster on the top spot run it all the bottom that's low 2 and okay all right trying to take a break and make a visit to an orthopedic surgeon after that round just kidding but yeah those things really punch when you're setting down well groups I'm pleased with the centering of the groups and we're talking basically hand-sized groups on the foster and got the same on the Brinegar as well but they're both shooting low and the spacing being what it is for 45 yards has rifled slugs I think I make a little bit tighter groups once I determine my home to fence load it's off to the races I'll be spending some extended range time working on target acquisition tracking multiple targets and trigger control with regard to slugs I need to confirm the accuracy range with the factory settings and work from there for target shooting at longer distances hopefully you've benefitted from the information presented here and also enjoyed the virtual trigger time thanks for watching
