hey guys welcome to another episode of Northwest fishing secrets we are doing a mushroom a wild mushroom catch and cook today that kind of remains the only legal thing for us people here in Washington because our government shut down all fishing we are going to go in the woods to try and find some wild mushrooms out there however we have a back-up plan as well to make sure that we get a catch and cook and that is I have wild morels growing in my backyard guys we're right over by my wood stack this is a bunch of cottonwood and morels happen to like growing near Cottonwood so I might have scored some hitchhikers when I got all this free wood here all right look at that that is my little Morel farm here look at him they're like my little babies I've been monitoring these guys for the last week and a half or so did an Instagram post where I showed my little pet morels super-lucky they're like a highly prized delicious mushroom that some people like just search for all their lives so let's go ahead and harvest like one or two of them and then let's get in the woods so I'm trying to decide without stepping in here which one we want to harvest so I think we're gonna take this guy here he does not look like he is super healthy anymore so we're gonna harvest them this guy here look at that he's being a completely imprisoned by all the grass so we'll just free this little Morel right here rescue him so he can grow like a nice free mushroom there we go and I think we'll harvest just this big guy right here just because he's kind of at that eater size nice there we go look at that that's a beautiful beautiful morale guys all right you two are coming with me guys check it out I'm on my way to the mushroom spot and there's just a herd of elk running through people's yards here [Music] how cool is that [Music] [Music] alright guys we are at the mushroom foraging spot we are being responsible with the whole social distancing thing we're making sure to not stop anywhere not at no stores no gas stations nothing I'm just going from my house straight to the woods no contact with other humans so that way we are being a hundred percent safe for ourselves and others so that being said if you guys are brand new to my channel then thank you of course for watching and feel free to subscribe because I upload videos like this every single week I've been mushroom hunting since being a little child since the early 90s and so yeah I know a lot about mushrooms or at least you know enough to not get myself killed and find some delicious food in the woods so being able to share that passion with you guys as well just yeah I think that's I'm freakin stoked to be out here I like to look around the basis of trees rotting trees any of that kind of stuff can be amazing for mushrooms check this out I found a big old like a tree mushroom check that guy out there so we found our first mushroom of the trip I don't think that those things are edible I've heard of like reports of people trying them or some types being edible and like boiling them for I don't know two five days to soften them up I know if you can see it but there's a second one right under that tree there so we're gonna take a little break here and I'm gonna tell you guys just a couple basics about mushroom hunting there's really only three things that you need to do when you're out mushroom hunting one is you need to smash the like button for the YouTube algorithm the next thing is that you need like a quality mushroom hunting knife really any knife would do just fine for example you could use just a regular old pocket knife like this it would do literally perfectly fine for mushroom hunting I do have a special little knife here it's an open L a French mushroom hunting knife and you can check it out here what's neat about this knife besides having my name custom engraved on it it was an amazing birthday gift that I got years go but you can actually lock the blade in place that way while you're cutting mushrooms you're not accidentally going to cut yourself and the blade is slightly rounded which makes it perfect to clean around the stems of mushrooms that you find now the main thing that I like about this knife is that it does have a little like a brush on the other end made of boars hair as I believe so well what's nice about that is that you can clean your mushrooms in the field which is really important to do before you start piling all your mushrooms into a bag if they have dirt on them and you throw them in a bag now they're gonna kind of mush on each other and the dirt just gets mushed into all the mushrooms so make sure that you always clean your mushrooms with a brush it's honestly perfect for mushroom hunting it's like only thirty bucks on Amazon I think I'll try and find a link on Amazon for you guys if you do want to pick up one of these guys but really if you do already have a good pocket knife and just a separate little brush that you can use to clean the mushrooms that'll do just fine too so don't waste money if you already have gear for that and then the only other thing that you'll need for mushroom hunting is just at least one quality mushroom hunting book now this year is not necessarily the best mushroom hunting book in the world but it is perfect if you are a complete beginner it's called mushrooming without fear the nice thing about this book here for example is that again if you are brand new to mushroom hunting and you are worried like every first-time mushroom hunter that you're gonna pick something that'll accidentally kill you this book here takes all the fear out of it and makes sure that you can avoid entire mushroom classes that contain those few ultra toxic mushrooms there really are only like a handful of mushrooms in the world that can actually kill you so yeah this book here makes sure that you will come home safe every time after mushroom hunting I'll leave a link to this one here on Amazon as well I think it's only like 15 or 14 bucks but again the key is buy yourself a mushroom hunting book for whatever geographical area you are in because you do not want to rely on Google Images to identify mushrooms positively seriously I'm an old-school mushroom hunter and that's still what I'm gonna recommend don't use the internet for mushroom identification check that out that there what looks like just some nasty goo on the tree like it almost looks like tree sap but those are actually mushrooms as well they're just a different family of mushrooms that infest rotting trees and it's kind of cool actually I don't think they're necessarily edible though we're not gonna eat those guys this whole area here is just like perfect for mushroom hunting there's a bunch of old fallen trees that are rotting I'm standing on one right now a lot of moss a lot of pine needles little tiny branches and stuff that this is this is what we're looking for guys when we're mushroom hunting this is the money zone right here and check it out there is a little tiny little tiny mushroom right there look at that little guy we're gonna leave them alone don't want to break them and here look at this right next to that mushroom there's another little type of mushroom here as I know we're so close to finding mushrooms my my primal hunting instinct is completely kicked in right now if you've never tried it before that's yeah how it goes is you get in the zone I'm in the zone right now baby now if you guys have ever seen this stuff here from what I understand and correct me if I'm wrong guys but these guys it's actually a symbiotic relationship between a mushroom a fungus and I believe algae so they kind of fuse together to form this stuff and it grows on trees so just little random side factor hi guys we're at the creek what's funny is you'd never think that there'd be trout in a creek like this but where I grew up there's a little creek smaller kind of comparable in size to this one and it would have I'm not kiddin probably about 16 17 inch brown trout living in a German Browns [Applause] some of you have asked of me to just share more stuff about what I do every time when I shoot a video I make sure that I have an attractive looking thumbnail that way more people click on it they don't want to see my face when they're thinking about clicking on a video they want to live like one image needs to show what it is that we're gonna do in this video all right so we're gonna make our seasoning now for that we're gonna use an old-school traditional mortar we're gonna keep it super simple guys because when you're cooking mushrooms especially something delicious and delicate like a morel you want to actually taste the mushroom because they're so delicious so all we're gonna use is my Danish sea salt the next thing we're gonna use is just some mixed peppercorns there we go not too much just a few corns lost a couple and then last but not least I did pick just some rosemary some fresh rosemary in my yard now if you guys have never used a mortar and pestle before the way this works is essentially you grind you've got these two stone surfaces between which you can grind your spices up so I'm just gonna crush these peppercorns real quick you just grind it like this now check that out guys we've got a nice fine powder of salt pepper and rosemary you know the way that I like to cut a Morel is just cut them down lengthwise once oh and look at that we got a little we got a little hitchhiker here there we go a little roly-poly dude get out of there now for cooking I did bring a gas stove as well but I thought why not have a little bit of fun we're gonna use an S Pitt stove I believe this thing is made of titanium and you'll see how this works it's a solid fuel stove so we're actually gonna use a fuel tablet to cook these mushrooms the cool thing about these stoves is first off it's just plain fun all right and second these little tablets they're I believe they're total waterproof I could soak them in water and put them in there in fact let's you know what let's do that let's soak one of these in water and that's the one that we're gonna use to cook these mushrooms look at that this whole kit is tiny super lightweight so I actually really like it plus I think it's only like this kit - the fuel is like 25 or 30 bucks I'll try and find this on Amazon as well if you guys want to order yourself one of these - all right so we're gonna go ahead and set this guy on there we'll place that butter in there [Music] so one thing that complements mushrooms really really well is some onions so I've got just a few pre-diced onions that I've brought from home [Music] [Music] nope [Music] we had one little runaway [Music] right now that the mushrooms are into time for our spices [Music] [Music] that's where those mushrooms are pretty much perfect just starting to brown a little bit cooked morels just to perfection see what they taste like [Music] man guys I'd is ridiculously good man I mean just look at it man they're so good this is just what makes me so happy being out here at the woods I'm so glad that you guys got to join remember if you guys are brand new to the channel or haven't subscribed yet do smash that subscribe button and ring the notification bell that way you guys do not miss my weekly uploads so if you guys want to see more foraging like this for mushrooms or or you know like plants or stuff out in the woods that you can't eat let me know I love doing that kind of stuff let me know in the comments smash the like button if you guys enjoyed this video and want to see more like this thank you for watching and we will see you for the next video until then you guys know it fish and I guess porridge on [Music]
