modulation pedals have come a long long way since they were first introduced in the late 1970s and on today's episode I'm going to show you some of my absolute favorite modern modulation effects before we get going I'm going to lay a little bit of a foundation for what type of modulation effects I choose to play today modulation is a big category it includes phasers all kinds of modulations some people even throw Tremeloes and so I'm just gonna stick to chorus vibrato and flange style effects you might hear a little dash of reverb and some of these pedals or something here and there that's a little different for the most part I'm sticking to chorus vibrato and flanger and would that said let's get going first up is the old blood noise endeavours reflector this thing is amazing it has four knobs in a 3-way toggle the toggle lets you choose between three settings wrinkle wash and mirrors my favorite in this pedal is the wash mode in the center it has a little bit of verb and it has more subtle things you can do with it which I prefer but this thing gets crazy even in that setting that I say is subtle you can do all kinds of modulations you can make your guitar sound really really crazy and it's really really fun so if you like the wild side the really really extreme side of modulation this would be the first place to look you also have [Music] next up is the Matthews effects chemist this is a very very powerful modulation pedal very modern in the sense that with two foot switches two isolated rows of knobs you have dip switches on the sides there's a lot of modulation sounds to choose from and you can have two different settings on the fly which is really cool I'm gonna set it up with a chorus sound and a type of flange encountered see this row or this row and each row has an assigned toggle for the type of modulation this is a very very cool pedal [Music] the chase bliss warped final high-five version there is a normal non high-five version maybe that's the version one and this is the version two I'm actually not really sure and I'm sure someone in the comments will let me know about a thousand times which is which but I'm using the hi-fi and it is just awesome because I'm a huge vibrato fan and this takes that to the extreme you know the whole idea is that a warped record or vinyl is changing the pitch as the needle is getting in and out of the grooves and it's raising and lowering this really simulates some way out there crazy phenomenal modulation sounds and the sound I have it on is one of my favorite and then you'll see Nick's hands move in and do things with the toggles because I only have two hands I do have feet but my feet won't reach on top of the amp I'm not that tall yeah [Music] next up is a pedal that most of the world doesn't really know how to categorize and I gotta be honest I really don't either I've mentioned it on some episodes but I'm putting it in this because it definitely modulates it is the rainbow machine by Earthquaker devices this thing is wild so basically you have your clean signal you have layers of where you can put octaves above and below and you can pitch those in different ways and then you have the magic foot switch so there's this thing going on here where this is a digital pedal and the digital pedal has a clock and a crystal runs that inside yes a crystal not like a treasure crystal but it's an electronic component and basically they've removed that and there's a way that you sway this back and forth so it's like the latency is getting whacked with in this digital pedal and the clock frequency and it's just crazy it does crazy stuff it's really amazing and it is definitely a modern modulation so if you like rainbows pink pedals and really crazy sounds or you just want to scare people [Music] brand-new out of the oven smells just like cookies at my grandma's house the somersault by Caroline guitar company it is a loaf i modulator this thing is brand-new I've had it just a few days and I have it set on this amazing lush beautiful awesome did I say great it's a really really great modulation sound and then you had this chaos split switch which raises the rate up all the way it's just really cool I love it this may be my favorite of his pedals that he's put out I like that it'll do the subtle things like I have it set it also does some really crazy fast and kind of out there sounds you can just really crank the mix to full wet it's great and I'm gonna play it [Music] the death by audio echo dream - not one I don't know that there is a one knowing Oliver there's not number two advanced echo modulation so this is technically a delay pedal and it has fuzz in it but it has modulation and the repeats of this delay modulate in a really really cool way there's a lot you can do here I actually found sounds I didn't even remember this doing so I had a lot of fun I've really delayed the filming of this video because this causes a lot of problems with me wanting to find different sounds but long story short I have the feedback on the delay set really low like just one repeat almost not even one repeat that the delay time is really fast and I'm modulating it and I have a little bit of fuzz on it it's really really crazy and you're gonna hear it so if I'll quit talking you can finally hear this giant pedal because it's really cool [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] another brand-new ish pedal it's been out for a few months but I consider it brand new because I'm still in love with it the honeymoon is not over it is dr. scientists the atmosphere first of all when you turn it on it has a color screen like an old Nintendo that alone means you need it even if you never turn it on but it does crazy stuff it's basically atmospheric sounds ranging from delay reverb into modulation and all kinds of stuff I'm gonna use a setting on here called ring mod obviously it's a ring modulator and I can do some really crazy trippy stuff with it I would like to describe the sound that this makes and that I'm about to show you as garbles of goodness that is how I'm gonna pin this I think they should change the code and what it says on the screen so that when you go to my setting seen in this video garbles of goodness I think that's what we have here [Music] you [Music] you [Music] you it would not be a modulation video without a boss pedal and this is a boss pedal that I don't really ever see I think it's kind of gotten overlooked but it's really really cool and it's very very modern when it comes to modulation so it's the multi overtone mo2 now this has octave in it and it does some things that remind me of a Leslie cabinet in a big way especially when you turn the detune knob I'll do that and you'll actually hear almost ramped down and you have the upper lower octave in these layers around the clean but it's not normal there's nothing normal about this and that's why I pulled it out it's modulating in a really really interesting way the way that it's timing there's a bit of delay you add the octave in there so it's a really wild effect it does subtle things but I have it kind of in the middle of the road and I think you're going to like it [Music] last but not least is Robert Keeley's Dino my roto it's an interesting name and so that gets at some points but it has a setting called roto flange so picture a rotary cabinet mixed with a modulated flanger so it's super thick I mean this is like thicker than a Hardee's milkshake when I chop down on this there's crazy stuff going on the harmonics are really awesome the way that the flanger swells as the rotary is swirling really really cool I like it I like all these pedals but I really I like this one couldn't play everything I wanted to play because you guys don't want 30 minute episodes here are some honorable mentions for modern modulation the line 6-4 series mm4 did four chorus what McDonald's did for hamburgers I said it they made it accessible to you and to me all these crazy sounds and this is kind of where stuff started and it has some really really amazing vintage sounds but it allows you to tweak those in a really modern way so check it out you might have one in your closet I don't know next is Robert Keeley supermod workstation I showed you a Keely pedal but this has all kinds of stuff I think it has almost eight modulation settings in it tap tempo crazy stuff so many jacks I don't know what to do with it so it's really cool check that out as what else we got my Emperor chorus it's a classic area on SCH 1 bucket brigade chorus but it has tap tempo three waveforms expression so it's doing the classic thing but bringing the modern amenities into it which I really like I mean I have to say that because I sell it you know I can't say like I don't like my pedal doesn't work the nor mod factory mark - there may not be a mark 1 I'm not really sure but it has all kinds of stuff this is a really cool pedal if you're not sure about modulation but you've watched this episode and you're saying I want to be modern I want a modulation pedal this is like a dollar probably as a button I'm not sure what that does I haven't plugged this up in a while but I remember it's sounding really good I'm trying to be honest trying to be transparent I haven't played this in a while I'm sorry I'm gonna play it after this Nick remind me to play that though okay instant loafing by z vex just a little nerd fact joe love chase bliss actually designed this he used to work for zvex so this is really cool and it is kind of a similar concept but it has compression in it as well which is really really fun the deadbeat modulation station simulated woodgrain sides and a ton of options I love the detune which is very similar to how the whammy I use that sometimes as a chorus pedal and then you have tremolo flanger which is one of the weirder possibly most useless sounds I've ever heard but because it's so weird I kind of liked it I don't know could write a hit song with it I don't know and then this guy the cosmic chorus I talked to Ryan cuz I was like I want to show one of these I actually prefer this for modulation but this is new and it has crazy cool stuff in it but this is so nice and he quit making it so maybe send him emails and harass him about making this again I know he doesn't want to so he'll enjoy that and then last but not least of the honorable mentions is the flange with nonane if you haven't seen the legend of love tone episode go watch that you'll learn a lot about the 90s and this pedal this definitely opened the door for making modulation pedals modern yeah today's record time is brought to you by good at falling by the Japanese house this is her brand-new record I showed her old stuff before on the show she has a collection of EPS that she did over the years leading up to this and here we are hold it in my hand it's phenomenal track 2 is my favorite song and possibly one of my favorite songs she's ever done if you take your vinyl out put it on your record player and put the needle at 2 minutes and 46 seconds I know you're all good enough to do that there is this amazing synth bass part and it's just killer I want to keep talking about that but I just need you to check this record out because I'm a huge fan and there's some really good use of modulation on here so in the comments below let me know what you think about this check out her older stuff as well and tell me a record that you love that features modulation in a really nice creative way check this out I think I said that 3 or 4 times to say 1 more times to check this out you're not gonna regret it thanks so much for watching this episode in those comments below I'd love to know what your favorite pedal that I played today was tell me all about it also mention some things that I missed or possibly haven't even heard about and hit like if you like the episode subscribe to the channel and there's a bell click that and you'll get notifications of every future episode until next time just watch the other episodes and then if you watch them all over and over it'll be time for another episode so do that bye bye
