holiday road trip welcome back to out of spec motoring today we are going on a pretty big road trip from here in Raleigh to Marco Island Florida a very routine trip for us and typically we would not make a video of this but for two reasons we are one everyone keeps asking for more Road Trip videos so ELISA is coming with me on this trip it'll be the two of us we drop the dogs off at a Rover last night so they're out on a fun walk with that family and to is it's supposed to they don't like Christmas is what tomorrow Christmas Eve so we're going to have a massive amount of cars at the superchargers so maybe we'll see lines I don't think we can stretch it from Santi to Kingsland we'll have to stop at Savannah should be interesting let's go we are charged up to a hundred percent I used the depart at feature but it seemed to finish charging at six o'clock this morning even though I had set it for eight so the batteries have been sitting full for a couple hours which is normally longer then I leave it where are you going she forgot her phone so let's put Marco Island in the nav and trip planner was almost instant so it thinks we can stretch it to Santi I'm gonna go out on a limb in that in the long range performance with the efficiency that this car gets we are we probably can get about 300 so that's from our last trip to Florida which we never blogged I don't think we'll be able to do that what we will likely be able to do is make it to Florence which is the next one up so that's probably gonna be our first stop but we'll see again it's probably worth noting this car is a long-range dual motor Performance Plus so it has the performance upgrades package it's on all season tires if you go back to our track video they're just the garbage cheap ones but that was more of a test than anything one of the issues I've been having with this car especially compared to the law rear-wheel drive which is to be expected but this car gets terrible terrible efficiency driving in the same way so we'll see if we experience any more of that on this trip if we do it's been 13,000 miles on it I'm not expecting it to change but maybe warmer weather heading south will help we'll explore an alignment and a few other things to try and because 450 watt hour per mile at 80 miles an hour is a little high that's like Model X territory so anyway let's get on the road and it says we will be there at 10:55 p.m. it's 8:45 a.m. no big deal get a phone charger watching hours it was literally 12:00 last night well we'll see ok well you know what I could be some traffic look that's right over there sorry probably doing some calculations [Music] like I said I'm pretty sure we couldn't do Santi so it's repopulating for Florence this car can do about 200 miles at highway speed on one charge driving like 75 80 we've got 204 out of it that's from a hundred to pretty much two percent and with the rain not as much but that's fine because Florence is right off the highway the total distance on one charge doesn't really bother us too much it's just the speed of charging and getting back on the road so if you'll notice from all of our videos I stopped more often than most people would and they're like oh all the comments are an electric car sounds awful you have to stop so much but you really don't it's just a little bit quicker to charge at peak rates and and hock from charging to charge or rather than sitting there for 45 minutes and only stopping half the amount of time or I should say half the amount of stops but for a longer periods of time so that's just how we roadtrip and it's a little bit quicker and it's a little on the road off stretch the legs back in the car and they just as a constant [Music] it keeps cutting up autopilot because it can't see but I'm pushing with the accelerator pedal and it's still driving fine so that's stupid week I guess we're just gonna drive the whole way like this like it's starting to freaked out now it says dry it's doing a bad job reduce front camera visibility yeah then it takes a few minutes for it to come back on autopilot used to be able to drive with the windshield wipers off completely blinded perfectly fine the old APM ap1 cars were great and poor visibility and this car has freaked out like seven eight times already and we're not even to our first supercharger stop the Florence supercharger 18 stalls no one's ever here Oh keys empty except there are a lot of people at ice these spots so they put up these silly cones which means you need to like move the cone what was that Alyssa no because that's a trailer stall but we can go to the one next to it so we're starting to taper a little early yesterday at the charge we were just driving around and I charged up from 2 percent to 50 percent and it started to cut back at around 45% state of charge down you know below 148 kilowatts so definitely something going on with this charger or temperatures or whatever but that's okay I'm not gonna go hit reposition the car again because there's just traffic and it takes a while so this will just live with this charge session it's really not too bad okay so both Santee and Savannah are full now keep in mind this really only happens a couple days a year when the supercharger network gets pushed but this particular stretch from Santee to Kingsland is really bad I mean it's just full the whole way there's no VIII's Savannah and Santee are both V ones aside from two spots at Santee so do we charge up here more while we can at least charge for another let's say 25 minutes to maybe stretch it to Savannah we should probably stop in at Santee just to see what that's all like but this is officially holiday madness everything is just completely full so we're gonna have to stop it one of these three or at least two of them I should say maybe even all three let's let's just charge up till we get under a hundred kilowatt and then we should probably go we'll see we didn't get any food and we charged up longer than we had to just in case Santi is full when we get there but we're down below 62 kilowatt which is kind of what I figured would be like absolute not absolute but pretty bad case scenario if we have to share stalls with someone there so it says we'll make it to Savannah at 5 percent I do not think that will happen unless the rain stops and it looks to be a ton of traffic just past Santi down through here so I think we're just gonna head to Santee and hopefully get an open spot Alyssa's mobile ordering for chick-fil-a which is like over back that way and the line was out the door so we're gonna do curbside pickup can you explain that that's good so we're getting a little bit extra charge here just for fun also two years free super charging on this car so we'll take we'll take the juice since we're here and again 50 kilowatt 53 kilowatt at 80% is what it's always done that sort of been the taper point but this car seemed to charge a little bit faster through the 50 to 80% range I was pretty pleased with the new charge profile so but this has been the case where it dips below 50 as soon as you get 80% nothing new there so are they ready for us I just told them that we already here but I know it's gonna take long that one's very long okay so I guess we should head over there now right yeah all right you got your chick-fil-a are you happy now you want to tell me what just happened yeah well oh the car was going this way it must have hydroplane and skidded all her out and was sliding up towards our side of the road and thankfully there's a guardrail and smashed into it and you just started screaming I wish I had the dash cam plugged in but I don't because I left it at your parents house when we were reviewing the last time a car crashed in front of us I forgot to put it back in the car we haven't bitten doctor at their house yet there's another crash truck right over there we're coming into some stopped traffic so this is the holiday madness do you agree oh wow that thing is deep in the woods all right now everyone just get out of our way we need to get in the Florida we're preconditioning even though it's 56 out we've already supercharged not long ago so well that's good at least it'll get nice and toasty for us I just have a thought why it might be preconditioning and it's 56 normally we don't see that I think maybe because it's raining the batteries just getting cold from everywhere so the water's cooling it down quicker from the outside yep we have to drive through this giant puddle let's hope our bumper doesn't fall off you know what they say about model threes and waters bumpers falls off Oh everyone's converging up the supercharger model s just pulled it this black car it is two spots available for the first time ever we might have to wait to charge Oh No I hope this X might believe me alright we got it we're at a full charger but we got the last spot in this X next to us isn't plugged in there look like their trip planning vehicle I'm ready alright pretty sure we're gonna get garbage speeds because we've plugged in at the same time as the Model S down there and this charger goes 1 2 3 a 1 2 3 beat wait all those people the mics they were just sitting there and they hadn't plugged in until now what a waste of time let's see what we get this is good what awesome for sharing that's pretty good so here's the deal it is pouring rain outside I always seem to go on road trips when it's raining a lot we pretty much have a full supercharger which means we're having to share a cabinet with someone else on the v1 side so we're getting 32 kilowatt max Oh a car just pulled out of the v2 I'm gonna go move over there the car wants us here for an hour to skip Savannah I think we're just going to stretch it to Savannah because that's a better place to hang out than here I'm gonna go take the v2 - even though it's still sharing with a car that just plugged in it's got to be better than 32 kilowatt let's go find out alright just plugged in on the brand-new two extra stalls that they add that are 150 kilowatt max I don't know if you can see it over there let's hit the wipers there's a Model X with a u-haul trailer who's unloading to charge up the this is not the day to travel with a trailer and a Model X this might be worse he's pulling full power next to us for sure so I guess that's all that's left over nothing else we can really do here no one has ever said this in the history of road tripping Tesla's but Savannah is preferable and it's purely because of the amenities that they have so we're gonna go there and then we'll just get enough to make it there because of the rain and there's a lot of traffic I think we should get you know 15% projected at arrival okay short rant what we're getting 30 kilowatts at Santee here's the deal Tesla had a great infrastructure now they've sold a ton of cars but this whole pairing of supercharger nonsense is just that nonsense so Version three has come out great you no longer have to share stalls you just plug in wherever you get maximum rate however the fact that the whole southern part of i-95 is still version one superchargers and we're just lined up waiting like this is super unacceptable so I would say you know typically road-tripping a Tesla offseason whenever it's fine it's no problem but when it gets busy holiday times version threes are needed so for them to go and put the investment into put to more version twos here they should have just left it a v1 and built a whole v3 somewhere else you know make this a priority rather than putting a ton in Las Vegas which no one ever uses so this is kind of annoying wouldn't you agree yeah yeah pretty brutal we can get there at 13% 109 miles if we'd go based off our previous driving will get 127 that's fine we might have to wait new a line at Santee but there's no way we're gonna sit here till we're a hundred percent charge to maybe make it to Kingsland so let's go to Savannah and we can have a nice sit-down lunch dinner yeah but by the time we get there's another two hours it'll be second lunch Wow we are underwater submarine mode the key to making it there quickly at this point because I'm expecting a really slow charge in Savannah is gonna be just keeping the speeds down so we're in the right length we're at the closest following distance to hopefully get some aerodynamic efficiencies or doing between 65 and 70 which for us is speeds down and Savannah is just full full full it's a Persian 120 kilowatt there's two posts on the end that are 125 kilowatts but those aren't working right so like I said you know again Tesla's are great until you get the bad infrastructure another one dj khaled oh yeah what's going on here I'm counting as a contact I think there must have been did some yeah now they're pulling out onto the highway so slow people are flying around them there was just a bad situation Christmas driving plus rain bless the southeast is a good time for entertaining yeah oh and our yup stop traffic probably because another one I'm trying to get it there was another one crashed right over there nope everyone just keeps crashing I think we're on accident number nine more traffic and another one this is brutal driving here looks like this one just happened - man that is gnarly he is stuck in there whoa finally traffic is opening up and I say that as we're slowing down but blue skies which means no rain which means less accidents which means good things ahead back to more traffic how do you feel about this yeah we're gonna get there pretty late with this much traffic another one oh that's a nice truck - that's sad nothing looks good okay windows up flooring it in chill mode so what I really go we've seen a lot of accidents on this trip and our friends down at Marion just under that's it so what do you think that means for us hopefully I mean I don't think you can see any more crashes of what day and we're at the track a lot we don't see this many crashes we're heading to the Savannah supercharger which is inside of the airport this is like an early installation for Tesla again they haven't really done anything with this stretch of the road but we've been monitoring it on the map and it keeps popping between zero and one available which makes me think that there was a line so I checked the plugs share which you should always check in a plug share when you charge your car it's just a great app to keep an all crowd source and everyone up to date and they said there was a one-hour line to plug in so we have to charge here I guess worst case we have our chat aboah dapped err there is a chat about station right down here so if it's really gonna take a long time we could go to the Electrify America station but let's see at least what we're dealing with here and you know everyone's gonna comment oh think about the cost of Electrify America I'm trips like this but the cost doesn't really matter it's just getting there in the easiest way possible so this is how you get to the Savannah supercharger it's super confusing you go in through the airport you get your ticket thankfully it's covered even though it's raining a lot of people hate this supercharger I actually don't mind it as much I just don't like that it's not a fast one but the airport itself is beautiful it is actually probably the nicest Airport I have been to you and they copy or charging I mean your parking so it's not to get to pay for parking and it's really not not the worst thing on the planet so let's see if there's a line or if the chargers are just dead so I see two Chargers that don't have the lights on them that would indicate that they are not working the rest are full so this is the first time I'm ever gonna have to wait for a charge so now we're wrapping around here we're gonna queue up we'll be the first in line once someone pulls out a kind of a bummer that two stations are down you know Tesla has the ability to upkeep these Chargers but they really have been letting them go in recent time so I guess we'll just Park it right in front of this brand-new Silverado with a nice leveling kit on it looks like and we will just chill here until someone pulls out first time ever while we're waiting and queueing up here let's come up with a trip plan so typically what I would do is I would go to Kingsland after this although it looks like Kingsland is gonna be much the same oh no that's pretty good actually and ten stalls that used to be an eight stall either they put two permanent ones in there or it's the mobile chargers that they had that they're counting but I think the car wants to go to one of these in Jacksonville yeah so wants to go from here to there that sounds good the only reason I would not push it all the way there as if there's people waiting while we're charging then we'll get out of here just so people can charge and get on the road and we'll stop in Kingsland but we'll play that by here well we've been here for about 20 minutes almost no one still has moved but the more time we wait hopefully one of these cars will open up and another Tesla just pulled in so now we have three in the queue coming soon just insane good news that didn't take too long that's the first time I've ever had to do that in all my years of driving electric cars I guess on a holiday weekend it comes as expected so let's get this thing juicing so I've charged at this one before and it kept fluctuating from like 24 to 110 we're sharing with a performance three so that's going to be pulling all the juice so hopefully as they taper we will pick up some speed here oh no here we go they may have just we're picking up that's good this is what we've seen last time at this charger so that's faster than Chatham oh so we will wait here let's go get some Starbucks and food I don't know this sign says you can't go on it or it's just broken it says out of oh well I don't think you're supposed to use that this is definitely one of the prettiest airports and inside is great too alright Starbucks is good love this place and we're already ramping up on charging up to sixty two kilowatt so that other car that's plugged in is tapering off that's good news for us we came here for Thanksgiving on a road trip in this same Model X brand-new dual motor performance Raven was sitting here months ago well I guess a month ago uh it's all condensation inside I bet the battery is just dead empty you can see the air suspensions going down on the front right - so sorry car well the line is gone and there's one open stall so I've absorbed the traffic pretty well actually not a big deal we're going to see what our next move is now that we don't have to just leave instantly here are the moves typically what I would do is I would just charge up here a little bit and then jump to Kingsland where they're faster Chargers however Kingsland is basically full I assume a lot of the people that cleared out here are going there now the trip planner wants us to stretch it past Kingsland and go to this one which is pretty empty so that's that looks good to me what is that that's too far off the highway that's like a city charger so we're only getting 54 kilowatt this is the best we can get out of this charger right now we were above 60 but I think it's probably getting hot in there so that's why it's killing our speed so I'm not really sure what are we gonna make it to Kingsland with if we go 5% I think we'll just charge up a little bit more at risk Kingsland we're getting out of here we just watched a little bit of this video mr. beast is awesome fellow North Carolinian lives in Greenville we can make it there 9 percent that's good that's perfect let's go do you agree with this method hey we were just charging up sure thing do you know what they ever do with that with our names and phone numbers ok thank you very much you have a great day we were in George Peppard nickel I forgot that we were going to do the Christoph Kringle thing and our number was 6 for 7 something something something anyway so it's something different every time but actually I think it's always started with the first name of George my last name keeps changing and we have some airport traffic we need to make it to the other side of that light and then one more light down before we can turn onto the highway and this thing only lets like four cars through with each light cycle so we're not getting the Marco Island until very late all the trip planner I do want to say has been calculating things instantly it's insane so without charging we'd get there it doesn't make sense we'll be there at 1:00 a.m. 2:00 a.m. do you want to stay over somewhere I kind of feel like we should just just push it and get this Drive over with Wow that's a four-for-one for for what very good another one let's see this one oh there's a two-for-one Oh beetle dang brother everyone just keeps crashing let's hope that's not us I think we're up to accident twelve or thirteen we'll have to go back and count insane just cruising along here and it's nice to have some clear skies and some nice open road this is the fastest we've been able to go all trip we were $0.90 the savanna supercharger letting others charge but now we need to get places and so this is a Model X that is likely heading to Kingsland and we are going to speed in front of these Canadians and their hundred d plug-in before as there are 3 of 10 available they actually put two new posts in it looks like just same as they did in Santi the mobile ones are gone so if we're gonna share with anyone I say we take so a nice guy was just moving his mouth three and he had suggested for us to come over here because we'd have an open cabinet I thought it was cool other people do what I do so our gamble coming to Kingsland paid off because we have a full open cabinet to ourselves we're ramping up getting nearly a hundred kilowatt come on over 100 kilowatt now 110 115 this is great all right so we are gonna rock and roll with some fast charging and make our way to Florida Tesla added another two stalls here and they have to put an extra cabinet because they ran out of space for for a and B right here but hey it's good that they're at least expanding the station's I just wish they were VIII's well you got some snacks and peanuts in a cup why you look like a deer in a headlight all right they just unplugged they're going down to the free stalls that way will we ramp up or will we not Oh yep so now it's going down it should go back up they always do this weird power drop thing and so now we're ripping it back up to whenever the charger can put out we've been charging here for a while we've tapered down of course however this has always been a stretch so we really this charger isn't really along the way the closest one is Altamonte Springs which this can get pretty crowded but by the time we roll through there it should be pretty empty so I think we hit this one instead of celebration because what the car wants to do is go celebration and then down so I think we hit Altamont a and then we'll hit one of the Fort Meyers ones and then end up down there that should be quicker than just doing a long target celebration so with a couple more minutes once this comes off 5% we're gonna head down all right we're up to 7 percent that means it pretty much thinks we can make its only hundred and sixty-five miles if we drove how we were driving we'd do 184 so that looks pretty good to me welcome to Florida finally well it has started to pour rain it's killing our efficiency so we'll just need to keep uh speeds down what is this person doing to just driving down the shoulder concern if the road is over here G is Florida yeah anyway as you can see it's very hard to see anything but that's ok autopilot hasn't been kicking us out so far and yeah we're just gonna keep the speeds down it says we have 86 miles to go if we keep driving like we are we'll have a little over a hundred so that's totally fine no issues there it is amazing that this car can get like 200 miles out of a charge and that is it I thought driving how we do the rear-wheel drive that we had before would just do like 270 280 it's a huge huge difference is it bad to keep this up another one oh man I like pretty gnarly pulling into Altamonte Springs and we will take one of these down here that's hopefully unpaired nearby supercharger stations so for B and 480 okay very good we will just take four on the end get a whole cabinet to ourselves this is pretty good I love how they have a sign to showcase nearby super charging stations because this one probably gets pretty busy you can see this here all of the local chargers pretty cool we're going to Whole Foods if it's still open they have mochi this is the best stuff on the planet we are now charged up pretty far 71% it expects us to make it at 7% 167 miles if we take our worst case we have 185 remaining that's a 291 hour per mile most of this driving is just pretty flat two-lane roads one in each direction and relatively low speeds around 60 to 70 miles per hour so we will be able to achieve that no problem we'll go to Fort Myers and then we will be home in Marco Island not bad [Music] not much to report on on the drive so far Alisa sleeping we've just seen roads like this keeping the speeds down because we're relatively close 21% to go 44 miles it says we have 54 projected but that's not a really really low consumption level for this car so I've just been cruising at around 55 yeah right around there yeah so not much to report we'll just continue on it's almost one o'clock in the morning like almost two in the morning Steak and Shake batteries almost had superchargers across the street but Alisa needed some water it's been like five minutes okay I just said give him a second we gave him a lot of seconds you always know you've done a good job when you get this message but didn't use the supercharger is right over there our last supercharger of the trip I think if this one's slow we have plenty to choose from it goes all the way down there pretty cool and we are at 2% state of charge this is the stupidest feature of 2019 I don't care what anyone says this is just not needed it's distracting and it's just working the computer for no reason we have arrived it's very windy we got the car plugged in on the outlet we are going to get some sleep and visually concludes our Melbourne trip down here which we actually do all the time in was very routine [Music] you
