MN Spring Crappie Time

what is up everyone spring is finally here and I'm back getting the kayak out today I'm gonna try this little Lake here in Minnesota and the bass season is still closed for another week so I'm gonna try for some crappies today so here over eight days ago and there's still ice on the lake so I'm not sure if they'll be up shallow or not yet but and the weather has been it was beautiful like it is today sunny around 70 degrees so you never know I could heat up those shallow bays pretty quick there's only one way to find out get the kayak out there and go investigate open water isn't that a beautiful sight I don't know about you guys but winter was way too long up here that's starting to wonder if the poles had shifted we're gonna skip summer and head straight back in the winter again no I think it's finally over now everything is I don't know three weeks or so behind schedule it seems the river bite has been well pretty much non-existent that's why today I'm gonna come out here and try for crappies it's all kinds of signs of life ducks out there little minnows swimming around here that is definitely a good sign [Music] but my bike lock now I can just walk my little cart to the tree over here I don't have to walk it back up to my truck it would probably be safe to sitting out here but you never know I hate to get done fishing come back and find my cart missing little lock it up just in case all right let's hit the water you see this will get my boots on I don't wanna go about ankle deep with these boots seat dull situated alright rock and roll you'll find us in crappies this Bay right here is pretty shallow I've never seen them in here but stand up and check it out look at all the minnows seein much there's a couple little bays on the other side of the lake over here that's where I've always found him in the past so we'll do a quick look around in here I don't think we're gonna see anything though then we'll head straight on over to where I think you'll find the crappies and the blue gills today you know I keep five of each on this lake so I brought my Springer with we start finding crop these I'll probably keep the few to bring home and cook for dinner it'll be careful at the stand of paddling right now access water's still pretty cold don't really want to go for a swim here's the rig I'm gonna start out with today he's got a little slip bobber I'll give her about 18 inches of line I get a little uh believe it's a Lindy jig at all they're all pretty similar little sixteenth ounce jig I believe with some feathers on it his little gulp one-inch minnows and some white and chartreuse ones that's what I was catching him on last year so try go get out of this window good thing is with this wind direction that we got stay the other bays are over here so I mean there should be dead calm I get this guy all rigged up just so we're ready to roll in case we come up and some fish need to get it in front of him in a hurry [Music] there we go that's what we'll be catching them on today at least I hope trim down my barber tie strings here a little bit - they're a little bit longer than necessary I'll leave a little bit under enough to grab with my players if I need to tighten them back up again all right that's all good to go let's put the cat bottles gonna have a young juice all over my pants or gulp news [Music] alright let's go check it out see what we see those little bigger right here's where I think I might find them that's another entrance to it over on this side though and it looks nice and calm over there so we're gonna go try over there first oh we shouldnt be able to get out of the wind a little bit back here at least maybe [Music] [Music] there's one right along the rushes over there we've got here first fish of the day it is a bluegill indecent one I'll take it that's what I got him on a little I believe it's a windy jig just a little sixteenth ounce jig some feathers I got a one inch gulp minnow on there little sinker little slip bobber and I'm running for pound line today [Music] [Music] there's one that looks like it might be a crappie yeah right up along the rushes over there mr. crappie that was the first keeper fish the day I think there we go that's what I'm looking for [Music] pretty fish I'm gonna lengthen this one mmm he's about 12 and a half inches that's a keeper a little over there come on come on I know you're chewing on it [Music] it's a little bit of chop we have it's just perfect to keep that bait bouncing a little bit - what do we have here I'm gonna be ten inches out here so I'm gonna throw it on the measuring stick oh yeah that one's good we'll have another quarter keep your number two give that one somebody to talk to you down there [Music] think it's a crappie oh yeah back overhead of this pot clips cast yeah that's a good one I think that's gonna be a keeper damn your swallowed my little jig I don't throw around the measuring stick just to be safe remember she's got to be 10 inches that's about ten and a quarter she's a keeper just barely I'll take it got three crappies and a bluegill on there throw it back probably 20 blue Gilardi today I'm mostly just looking to keep a few crappies [Music] look up I'm just trying to clamp down my paddle this one came up and grabbed it that one's keeper wasn't even really paying attention I looked over and I didn't see my bobber a little keep just make sure she's in the slot sighs I think she is oh yeah just shy of 11 that'll go on the stringer all right crappie number four right there I did spend about an hour working my way up along these cattails and back into that yeah I didn't really find much other than a whole bunch of blue gills right along in here is where I've been finding all the crappie and I think that's cuz the deep waters right behind me here nice little springer fish though for crappies and one bluegill I decided to throw in there I could probably have a limit of blue gills right now too but they've all been kind of on the smaller side right about there is where all the copies are hanging out today I like that spot there's another one this one's a keeper it's number five it looks like a keeper that's a good one that's nice girl be right there probably good eleven and a half twelve entry no need to measure that one all right that's my limit of crappies and still add a couple more blue gills on there if I want but that's plenty of fish for a fish fry tonight well it's about time for me to call it a day so I'm heading back to the launch I got what I came out here for though nice sharing are full of crappies yeah my limit of five of them and it through a few of those blue gills on there too to go along with them and I had a lot of fun catching them too so I'd say that was a successful day on the water but I'm gonna head for home I get out the fillet knife and it's crappie for dinner at my place tonight so I'm out of here thanks for coming along I'll see you guys next time
