Chasing Channel Cats On My Home Town River

how's it going everyone i have a fun day planned for today we're going to try for some channel catfish pretty much my whole life i've lived within a mile of the red river here in fargo it's a great fishery for channel cats you can do real well fishing walleye and pike out there certain times of the year and i haven't fished it nearly as much as i should since i got my kayak i've really become more of a bass fisherman but it's always fun to catch some channel cats and then spent many warm summer days growing up along the banks of this river fishing catfish and i had a blast so today we're going to try it out of the kayak the first thing i got to do though is stop here at one of the local dams and try to catch some bait the plan is to catch some gold eye to use for bait so for that i've got a simple slip bobber set up here got my bobber a bobber stopper a couple beat up decent size split shot sinker and a plain hook and i'm just going to stick a little piece of night crawler on there and we'll put a whole worm and try to get it out along the edge where that moving water is there we go that looks like the spot oh i got somebody nippling over there i think got him looks like what we're after oh yeah just a little guy but that'll work i might try to catch one or two more if they're gonna be that size come on take it take it got him there we go that's what we're looking for we got bait bait fishing mission accomplished i'm gonna head back to my truck go grab my kayak and my catfishing gear and we'll head to a different spot and see if we can hook into some channel [Music] cats [Music] i've got my kayak all loaded up let's get out there and soak some bait i'm gonna head upstream a little ways first let's see if anything looks interesting up here i found the first spot i'm gonna try we've got a point here and then a nice deep hole out in front and the current kind of does some weird stuff right here i did stop home and chop up my gold eye oh look at that yummy we'll put a big old hunk of that on this circle hook one nice thing about using cut bait is that it stays on that hook real well i'll leave that one right about there oh yeah i felt like it dropped down a good 10 feet or so and we can use two lines out here so both these rods i'm fishing are pretty much the same thing the only difference is this one is the saint croix triumph rod this one is a bass axe rod they're both six foot six inch medium heavy fast action both of them have 30 pound braid using pretty much a standard catfish rig i've got a three ounce no roll sinker a little swivel there and then about a 15 inch liter of 20 pound mono with a big old size five ot circle hook we'll put the head on this one all right we'll let that bait soak for 20 or 30 minutes and if we don't get any action here we'll move along to the next spot i gave it about 25 minutes at that last spot over there didn't have any action so i figured i'd reel them up and move this looks pretty good right over here we've got some trees sticking up i'll go drop my anchor upstream from these and we'll throw that bait out in front of them see if we can maybe lure a big old catfish out of there all right i'll give it 20 minutes or so here and nothing will keep on moving pretty much what you got to do keep trying spots give it 15 20 minutes you don't want to be too quick you want to give that bait some time to let the scent disperse let those catfish follow it back in but 20 minutes or so it's usually you can boat how long i'll stick around one spot if i'm not getting any action this looks pretty good right here though i have high hopes for this spot got one well that did not take long at all feels like a real nice fish too he pulled me off my spot but that's okay oh i'm just going to open up my veil on that one we'll have to go back for that so so here we go i got him geez that was kind of a cluster f this fish got me wrapped up and logged down there for a minute and weather line is wrapped up in that other tree well that might be the spot back there i had that bait down there for about two minutes yes we are on the board yeah he definitely wasn't coming off wow that is a beauty right there nice big red river channel cat i love it all right now i got to get my mess cleaned up at this other line i think we'll go back to that same spot and cast them back out again geez i'm just looking at my youtube stats right now i cannot believe how well that duck lure pike video is done i mean it's only been up for about a week now it's got two and a half million views my subscribers have been going crazy i'm up to 98 000 right now so i'm guessing by the time i upload this video i'll have hit the 100 000 subscriber mark which is insane i never thought i'd get anywhere near that so thanks to all you for watching my videos hitting that subscribe button hitting that like button to get youtube to recommend them in the algorithm couldn't have done it without you guys so good all right i do think i'm gonna put on some fresh bait because that stuff's been soaking for a while got nice little cluster logs up here ahead of me with the deep hole right in front of it looks promising toss some of that goodness up there and see if we can get bit so bonus that we're in the shade over here too i do like that it's getting a little bit warm over there in the sun [Applause] got him it does not take long to pull them out of that spot if you get in the right spot come on so there's another real nice [Applause] all cat come on jesus things put up a fight oh come on so oh i almost got him up here he just does not want to give up come on there we go got him yeah i had that bait sitting out there for maybe two or three minutes tops this one came along and grabbed it beauty another real nice channel cat get some fresh bait rigged up here toss her back over there gotcha i want to get him away from those sticks before he finds his way into there this is a big one i haven't seen him yet but that was a big splash he does not want to come up either [Applause] yeah that's a good catfish jesus all the time i spent out here when i was a kid this is probably one of the better days of catfishing i think i've had as far as size goes get this guy up here so i can get him in my net this is not easy to do in a kayak wow this is a big catfish though wow look at the size of that channel cat wow [Applause] what an awesome night well i had a lot of fun out here tonight it was a beautiful night on the river it brought back a lot of fond memories from when i was younger and we
