Misadventure: It's Hard to Compare the Wrangler to the Bronco in Snow When We Get Them BOTH Stuck!

you might think that snow days like this come around very often in the colorado rockies but they don't you know when the mountains and the trees are covered in a magical powder of fresh fallen snow and if you're lucky enough and if you're early enough to get to the trailhead you can actually get first tracks on the trail first tracks also mean that you can get very stuck making for an interesting tfl misadventure oh look at this tommy fresh tracks we are out here doing a little bit of snow wheeling in the colorado rockies to find out what's better is it a bronco or is it a wrangler in the snow no we're not yes we are that's ridiculous your bronco is twice the price of my wrangler and i've got the shortino we're just gonna have a really fun snow adventure and see who can get stuck the first yeah i'm already stuck tommy so i think it's time to put the bronco in baja mode and let the snow fly let's do it you know we've done this before and the trick here is you want to have a little bit of wheel spin and so luckily i've got a lot of different modes i can put this in i'm in normal mode let me show you so here are the modes so eco slippery uh that usually doesn't work mud and ruts sand uh and baja so usually sander baja is the best so i'm gonna try baja and see if that gets me enough wheel spin to make it up this hill but this is where it gets a lot of fun because this is where the snow starts to flying i think uh sunglasses on very blinding out there all right here we go here we go now that was fun [Music] [Applause] [Music] so dad let me ask you a super simple question how much did you pay for that yellow ford bronco well tommy this is the first edition ford bronco that we paid 63 000 for and we're doing this video series as a shout out to the ronald mcdonald house and that's why we have it and uh i would say that this is a snow beast how much did you pay for yours 63 grand did that come with a fiesta for 63 grand for an off-roader what you're looking at is 33 000 worth of jeep wrangler willys and i have a feeling that i'm gonna be able to go pretty much everywhere you go in that bronco today in the snow all right well let me ask you a question tommy how much is a fully loaded rubicon yeah like sixty three thousand dollars but i don't have a fully loaded rubicon because i can't afford a fully loaded rubicon and i have the best thing of all you know what that is no vehicle payment oh yes that's right this is a vehicle that i think is much more attainable than that fully loaded bronco now of course this is completely apples to oranges uh literally both colors and trims because you could get a bronco that competes directly with this jeep that has a manual transmission and is much more affordable but it's kind of like big versus little it's dad versus sun all right as you know tommy we have affectionately named this next part of the trail hell's turn because it's a very difficult turn i'm gonna put it in mud and rust mode and try to crawl my way up see how that works and if that doesn't work i'm gonna go into baja mode and have a little bit of fun all right here we go it's nice and easy the thing about wheeling in deep snow is you don't know what's underneath the snow so it's always good to be a little bit cautious maybe these tires will have enough grip where i don't actually need to resort to momentum i think i'll be able to do it this way well that wasn't very hard tommy he just crawled right up you want to have a little bit of fun and do it quickly my dad climbed up this hill with no difficulty using the slow and methodical perspective which is the way you want to do it i'm going to try it with hammer down try to get a little bit sideways was that the correct technique uh probably not but was that the fun technique absolutely [Music] [Music] hey guys i'm rolling on goodyear mud terrains they're the territories they're 35s and they're actually uh not bad in the snow but what makes it better in the snow is this it's gonna take a while now this jeep is equipped with the tires i bought it with the bfg mud terrain these are the km2 so they're not the the newest mud terrains sometimes the wheelies will have these sometimes they'll have other brands of tires and i'm also going to air these down and of course every time we go off-road we remember everything but our air down kit so we end up using keys which takes forever so these are the steps i'll beat in the snow they look more like lumps great test of approach angle break over angle and in the snow of course traction attraction aid so let's see how my dad does in the bronco sway bar disconnected front diff locked rear diff locked everything locked and full on rock crawl mode as we get to the razor rocks now this is where usually most crossovers turn around and go back even some trucks have turned around here but hopefully we've got the big boy toys out today oh boy it was pushing me into the trees you see that i'm not going to go up the razor rocks dude this will result in a lot of damage bronco if i don't worry yeah i am taking my time dude uh we are oh i'm still kind of losing traction it's getting tougher for all your fun off-road and snow-wheeling adventures check out onyx off-road it's a great off-road navigation system you can download maps ahead of time so that when you're out here in the snow and in the really deep snow you may be stuck but you're not going to be lost let me walk you through these sophisticated off-road features in my 2021 jeep wrangler wheelies sport so i can go into four-wheel drive and that is the end of the list of buttons and switches i can turn to help me in the snow uh this vehicle does have a limited slip rear diff but i don't have a locker i don't have different drive modes i don't have trail cams none of it this is an old school good old-fashioned jeep in the sense of technology and i love that now i'm a little bit worried about this actually very worried you see my terrains are not ideal in the snow and they are certainly not ideal in the ice they don't have these things called sipes which kind of grip onto the ice um and yeah i think this is gonna get pretty gnarly so four wheel drive low [Music] the brake lock differential system that's trying to distribute torque left and right oh i stalled it that's embarrassing let's be honest dad that's the difference between a kind of shoddy driver and a really good driver so here i'm gonna see if i'm stuck here [Music] yeah yeah i think i'm going to change my line just a little bit come i'm going to come closer to you and further away from the tree in a very expensive mistake and then if uh that doesn't work we'll reassess come on well you can get a front locker on the wrangler too i just uh i don't have that much money so jeeps are expensive now all right change the line a little bit first oh yes what a beauty there you go a little bit of a line adjustment a little bit of a throttle adjustment and we were able to make it up that gnarly section come on jeep don't get stuck here might have to even get remotely stuck here oh one very sideways into the tree oh my god time you gotta say i'm having a lot of fun now i've got my sway bar disconnected i've got my front lock i got my rear locked i am in as off-roading mode as you can be i'm not sure if that's the smartest mode to be in when you're snow wheeling you know i have not gone wheeling in this jeep in a hot sec and it's showing i'm really struggling with the clutch management between the clutch the trees and the snows uh this this jeep is taking a little bit of a beating today so walk me through the engine in that bronco what do you have under the hood yeah i've got a 2.7 liter turbocharged v6 that puts out about 300 horsepower and i'm using about two of them right now yeah that thing's a beast i mean talk about power right you got over 300 horsepower you got tons of torque and at this altitude right like 9 000 feet above sea level oh you're going completely sideways we're coming up on truth or dare tommy uh and uh which one do you feel like doing i'm definitely gonna go there i haven't even gotten there i've gotten stuck is what i've gotten [Music] no no i just gotta get some momentum going here i've lost all my momentum so i forgot to talk about the engine and the wrangler earlier this is the 3.6 liter v6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound feet of torque which is a lot in a little tiny vehicle and it really isn't all that heavy especially compared to that bronco in the bronco we're talking like 5000 pounds plus this is like three thousand pound region okay maybe closer to four but still i mean a big thousand pound gap between the two yeah i was waiting for you now i got stuck tommy i'm gonna do uh dare but i need momentum so i'm gonna back up and see if i can do it in one big take okay are you sure you may want to do truth that there's got those nasty rocks the one on the left has the rocks and the one on the right has the rocks yes i'm going to go on the one on the left all right be careful all right here i go hopefully i can get enough momentum to make it up this time come on you can do it you can do it come on bronco there we go come on come on i got momentum i can't let him run into a tree come on bronco come on you can do it boy you can do it you can do this you can do it come on come on almost to the top almost to the top i'm not stopping i don't know why it's beeping at me but i can't stop if i stop i won't start again crazy come on bronco you can do it and i did it a pre-collision assist not available you're joking all right i made it to the top hey dude i made it to the top yeah you want to try i'm nervous [Music] disable traction control okay i need more speed than that there we go there we go i'm gonna be smart about this try to match the wheel speed of the jeep to the vehicle speed up the hill oh there we go look at that yes gee that was awesome that was lightweight i think that was a nimbleness that was my dad blazing the tracks of course but that was insane is what that was [Music] nice work tommy but i got a problem i stopped too early i should have gone to the clearing yeah you should have driven up the hill not on the hill i know i wasn't thinking so now the question is can i make it up there so i can turn around well i'm in a good spot i can just back down if i get stuck but i can't yeah you should have driven another 10 feet well i know that now why did you stop 10 feet from the top because you made it the full mile up and then oh well just stop here right before the summit because i was thinking of you i didn't that's just stupid you know you do silly things all right let me see if i can get up farther okay totally stuck i might be stuck all right so i kind of left myself in a really bad position here [Music] come on you can do it bronco you can do it are you going come on bronco you're almost there you really got to lock it up the front end this wheel's doing nothing all right let me go back in the four locker all right i'm locked here we go come on oh that was close to the tree all right nice and slow [Music] i'm gonna go turn around tommy oh that was close to the tree all right i'd unlock everything now let's see if i can turn around up here [Music] turn around bronco yes there we go bronco is now heading downhill face forward instead of nose backward which is great all right i'm kind of in a pickle here because my dad i love him but he didn't he didn't quite make it to the top of the hill before he stopped now i'm uh also not quite to the top of the hill because i couldn't get past them so now i'm either gonna have to go forward and try to turn around let's get strapped up around and probably just back on down the mountain let's see how it does there we go [Music] and this is the great thing about this wrangler right it's so small and narrow that i can just kind of glide in between the trees all right tommy so here's the thing right you know when ford built this bronco they like benchmarked the wrangler and they said if the wrangler's departure is here broncos here if the wranglers approach is here bronco's here right so i think at the end of the day both of these are incredible snow wheeling machines yeah they both were a ton of fun right i think if we put on more aggressive snow rated tires they'd be even better out here uh but you can spend 63 grand and have the ultimate fun with front of your lockers and sway bar disconnects or you can spend 33 grand and have a lot of fun as well just uh with manual windows you know what they say right when you're wheeling the best wheeling rig is like seven years old yeah two grand with dents in every panel and now you see why because we've come close to slicing up some quarter panels out here today so we're gonna slide down you know that yeah we're gonna slide on down and hopefully we make it to the main road without actually doing more damage all right we'll see you guys on the next episode of tfl offroad all right tommy a little post script of this video now we've been doing a lot of wheeling this year in the snow so we've taken trucks up here uh we've taken well now that bronco and the jeep what lessons have we learned i think there's three um get the extra insurance for off-roading for the trees no don't do it because you'll get stuck and if you do get stuck don't call us number three is slippery mode while it works great on roads not so good in the snow you want wheel spin to some extent i mean officially the book's going to tell you you want to match the wheel speed to the vehicle speed so that you uh you have the most possible grip but in in reality it seems like in the deep stuff especially when a little wheel spin number two number two uh having a front locker actually is beneficial in some cases and it's detrimental in others yep of course that was number one number one gotta bring your best buddy along because if you get stuck it's good to have a buddy with you [Music] [Music] do you give up do you want to pull from the wrangler i'm not convinced he can get out we were trying to do some high speed um slow-mo shots and then he took a little too high speed and went into the snow drift i think i'm high center tommy i need a little tug all right can you take me out of here yeah let's get you a tug oh it's deep here we got a recovery strap and we'll need a d-ring and i think that'll uh that'll do the trick are you ready for the rescue wrangler come on jeep get my tug there we go now i'm stuck you just had to get the high speed shots huh couldn't believe good enough alone you ready [Music] so new uh approach here back in the jeep in i'm gonna try to get my dad unstuck trying to shovel out some of the snow here in the middle so i don't get high centered again there's no bueno yep here we go with the bump in three two one bump and here comes another bump in three two one bump up work you know always have a buddy a recovery strap and a shovel the shovel saves ordain like a 10 plastic shovel otherwise we'd be um yeah coming back with a truck all right so before you like tear me a new one in the comments what we're trying to do is just get some snow flying slow motion b-roll and the problem is this over here is nice and fluffy snow it just fell unfortunately this over here is not it is hard packed look at that i guess that's basically well and then of course it was right that probably did hit and got myself high centered on so i guess the eskimos have like 20 words for snow now we know why
