yeah [Music] something very unique here in the sawmill today chestnut you know this isn't the old chestnut you hear about the old wormy chestnut that got the blight I think maybe in the 30s or 40s I've been sooner than that I'm not sure when that happened but a lot of people talk about wormy chestnut well this is a chestnut but it's not that species that you're thinking about this is a Chinese chestnut and to be honest with you I had no idea what it was a buddy of mine takes down trees on the side he's a fireman and he called me about a month or two ago and showed me a picture of this and said he thought he had a chestnut tree to take down and I sent it to my buddy Danny down in Georgia he immediately told me right off that was a Chinese chestnut now it's with you I've never even heard that before so this is really a first one for me but here we are about two months later after getting this log and we ready to solid up I still have the lt35 when he brought this log over to me but I knew it had nowhere near the capacity I needed to get the full width slabs out of this thing so this came from a small farm I think he came from a small farm if I remember right and it could possibly be yard tree so there's probably gonna be some metal in it I'll be really surprised if it'll hit some nails in it or something but it should be worth the effort though let's go over the measurements here and I'll tell you guys my strategy I'm going to use on how to get the best slabs out of this thing first thing I'm on this side of it or length eight inches so it's about six and a half feet long now I got the crotch in facing me today so I can see this width right here and make sure the saw mass passes through here and we should be okay as far as that goes I've done a lot of measuring on here I actually put this log in the meal on Friday night so our width right here is showing 33 inches here at the crotch 33 inches we get this saw head powered up and move down lay I'll show you guys the other end of it alright here's the base of the tree you can see the wedge here or his face cut where he cut this thing down and our diameter down here 27 inches so we're in good shape down here as well I'm clearing the solid mass with the lt40 wide should be able to clear this really easily this has got a very unique color to it as well it really favors that caramel color that you get with wormy chestnut and it also favors a butternut just a little bit also which is another form of walnut and I'm expecting some really nice slabs out of this thing right here at the pith the only issue I see is a little bit of rot right here around the pith but we'll try to Center all this in the wooden slab so something want to fit more than one but got some really nice brothe rings in here and they're really wide which tells me just probably did come from a field and not a dense forest moretz the growth rings will be a lot tighter we should get some really nice slabs of this I'm really liking this color I see and granted it has a crotch on the other end of it makes it even better did this blade tensioned up here and we'll be good to go around 300 or 3,000 rather psi and I'm going to be using these 9 degree blades here today and this is the only 9 degree blade that I have and this is one that came with the meal cuz there's a pretty good chance that they're going to be some metal hiding underneath the bark here this probably came from a field or a fence line or who knows where and the likelihood of having some nails underneath the bark are gonna be pretty high today and I'll be really surprised if we're gonna hit something so hopefully if we hit any metal it's gonna be while the 9 degree blade is on there and not after I take it off and put her sevens on and I was asked on a previous video whether or not I can use the same blades of 35 used on this 40 wide I can use the same profile on the same thickness but I have to use a different length the 35 take 150 80 inch long blade and this blade is 170 inches maybe 171 something like yeah so it's a little bit difference there in length compared from 35 to the 40 wide put a little ATF here on the rails before we get going this is automat transmission fluid so what my sir recommends to put on all the rails and the chains will quit thing here guys before we turn on this engine and get going we'll be going pretty slow today on these first few cuts with the 9 degree blade and the reason being that blades kind of dull I've cut some timber with it already and you don't want it making any kind of dives or anything on your cut because it's gonna be really valuable slabs when they're you know when they're air dried and kiln dried and one thing I wanted some nice flat level slabs get the most money out of them so this nine degree blade if I went really fast with they did have a tendency to probably take a dive on me we're on these first two cuts lot slower than usual just to make sure we get good flat reference faces the saw from [Applause] alright guys the first gently pretty smooth and this will be going slower today I'm fertile to stop by the engine a lot and kind of take you guys on thinking here's I'll make you chat on this slab or the slob rather but in hearing man on that pass which is very good and the number 9 degree blade that's the route render lay election so looks okay underneath here what I'll probably do is go ahead and start making my slab cuts off this first face as I set the Accu set for nine quarter and I've already lowered it down to the next cut so we're good right there start making some slabs and see how this looks [Music] and as long as that nine degree blade behaves itself and it's Chetan alright I'll probably just leave it on there I was like I said up a hit medal I'd rather hit it with a nine degree blade than a seven degree scrape off this sawdust and I'll bring the camera in and show you guys what we're looking at [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] the first two slants cut here things going good so far those number lines are actually solid this really well my I'm going pretty slow though it's probably part of the reason why first slab this is the bark side we've already looked at it flip it over Wow very unique charrisse's it's a lot different alone up guys some good-looking stuff though and no medal really surprised by that I thought I'd be hitting nails in the first cut or two no defects either no knots or nothing right here but get you some of that man that is nice I looked up some Chinese Chaston on Google and I saw some examples of slabs but I those do look it's nice and that's fantastic right there just water out evenly the slab water actually gets soaked up by the sawdust on the floor Wow man that is nice locking it out the part today guys it's not black walnut the washer take it they're usually on these figured loads that we saw up here takes about two three cuts to get down to the good stuff and this is the BART side slab and check out that figure right there that's where the crotch starts to form I can only imagine what the rest of us will look like that is amazing right there I just did not expect to see this kind of figure and her first slab that is super nice she talked about some nice coffee tables here to about 8 months to the year after these things dry and our width here on our first 9 quarter slab out to the bark it's about 22 inches right there fliers down to 20 inches down here toward the other end just a little bit of a curve to it a really nice piece very unique as here's the second slab and there's a crouched figure showing up right there where it's supposed to be I believe this chestnut would give walnut' a run for its money guys man this is some nice stuff and it looks so much like walnut with the crotch feed you're in the color to it butts a little bit lighter than walnut though it's the main difference I can see in the appearance or width here at the widest point we're about 29 inches that is nice stuff right there 29 inches nine quarter slabs coming in at about six and a half feet long [Music] it turns the spirit [Music] to darken time [Music] stays a secret the time I [Music] the poor [Music] once the still a yes [Music] the time
