[Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] before we get going today the first thing I want to do well the second thing the first thing is I have to put a 2x4 in here between the clamp and this slab to tighten it up just a little little too loose out there but this is a box sealer from the last video series that we did and this one has the pith in it and before I stack it for drain I really need to stack all of them they're all behind me here against this wall now since this slab has the pith in we'll go ahead and take it out before we can stack your air drying it's just waste I hate it there's no sense of even leaving it in there so we'll go ahead and make a cut above the pith get one slab off the top then you rip the path that will leave the slab on the bottom so what if this knocked out real fast and then we'll load up the two logs that were gonna be solid today [Applause] [Music] something interesting on the sawmill today this is an Apple log and it's pretty small the guy that brought it to me it's a customer law and he's paying me to solid up I don't do a whole lot of that well it's something like yes I usually do it because I can video for you guys and kind of show you something you need somebody calls me with oat or poplar I usually pass on it I just don't have time but this is kind of small and he said this was the limb of the tree and apple trees do not get very big so this was the limb I would love to see the main trunk of that tree he's gonna try to get that before too long so hopefully he'll bring that over a little bit later he says it's three times the size of this one so there's two things we have to think about on this law the first one is a problem we have to solve and the second one is solid for grade and we'll talk about that here in a few minutes after we make you first two cuts so this log has a sweep to it and right now the way we got it turned the high parts are on the ends so we call that the horns so right here and right over here or the horns sticking up this is kind of like a banana if you can kind of visualize it like that with this belly right here coming down so the first thing you are doing a lot like this if you're not doing live aged slabs is go ahead and take off the horns you come down and get rid of these two high points and I'll sell the material between it and that's the only way to remove that you can't use these long live loads or nothing like that's really gonna mess things up the best thing to do is just count your losses and get rid of those horns and cut them off on both ends and make sure you come down far enough towards going to take out this middle material and you've got a nice flat surface to work off of when you flip it over and sometimes get to make two cuts sometimes you'll come down and take just a little bit off these horns as you won't take off a whole lot especially the 12-inch log and then you'll come back again and make your cut to get rid this material in the middle but if you're done it's enough like I have usually one cut would get you there you just make the right judgment call and come in here and slice it off so once we get that done we'll flip it over 180 degrees we'll have the belly sticking up at that point and we'll do the same thing we're coming on both sides and come down have more ways to the middle than on the ends and have another flat cut then you have to cold planar surfaces on this log and you've pretty much made a curve long straights what you're trying to do you want to take that banana and make it straight but makes you sense to you I never explained it by using a banana before I'll try to put some visuals up here over on the forest reform to show you guys what I'm talking about if I can find some pictures to throw in here during this video so we'll make these two cuts we'll get rid of the horns of the belly and have herself a regular log to work with if they were going to solve for grade and we'll talk about that here just a minute where did these horns cut off this engine warmed back up there's one plugs going there and that these little chilly today are using the wood-mizer 7:47 blades once again today guys and based on what I'm seeing how that blade for the far near future that's probably gonna be the only blades we've run here at the solomon really like it was blades really nice [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right we got the horns of the Bailey both taken off the log and let's not some really nice grain kind under this solidest here usually with those blades you wouldn't have a lot of sawdust on here but I've got about 600 board feet I think on that blade right now and it's getting kind of dull it's still cutting but I can't cut as fast as I was when I first started with it if you speed up with this 40 it's tough those high-performance blade guides and we'll talk about that in another video that's a whole other subject right there but you can hear them and start with squeaky little and that means that blade is rubbing on them they're doing what they're supposed to do they're keeping that blade flat but also means it's about time to change your blade so we'll get this sawdust off here and see what we got to work with man Apple is very nice very nice right here really really pretty timber this is a third Apple log I've ever sawed and I really enjoy solid into them I just wish they was bigger now this is big for Apple but I wish there's about 20 inches that'd be really nice and I'm solid for great on this log which means I want the best possible face for it I want a good clean board with minimal knots on it and most of the time when you take off the horns in the belly don't look at the Lord again and try to figure out which face that is and kind of ignore these flat reference faces right here but in this case this right here is probably going to be the best face which works out pretty good so we want to flip it anymore and start cutting it all over again was over here on my left that'll be your right there's a lot of knots over here right in front of me there's several not too many on the face of this board it's a little pinholes but nothing you know nothing major now if here facing you guys I've already looked at it there's a lot of stuff going on over there we want to keep on the edge of the board's if possible so it worked out good we got our reference face cut we got the horns of the bailey off now I can flip it up on the sides and get rid of this bar to make a square can't and then we'll talk about what size lumber he won't salt out of this because he doesn't want slabs he wants an eighth quarter board and the rest of its gonna be four Porter let me bring the camera over guys as we clean off the dust up here and y'all can see what I'm looking at [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] so he wants me to come in here and make a 2-inch slab right here around the heart and that will be the only eight quarter slab that we make and then the rest of this log below the heart and above the heart will be one inch boards true for cooler boards so we'll come down we'll send her up this path with the auto up and go ahead and make sure we got a 2-inch thick slab right here will auto up one inch right here increments coming up and then we'll work our way back down and pretty much just let the Accu set do all the work and we should get a lot of boards out of this this is not a huge log but doing four quarter boards this will produce more lumber than you think [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music]
