[Music] [Music] [Music] me so welcome back to the sawmill friends it's saturday so not only did we score some nice ambrosia maple yesterday we gotta get those unloaded here in just a minute but today is the day i got a log that will be here in about 30 minutes and you guys will not want to miss this trust me hang in there with me guys let's go make some room because we've got a big one coming [Music] oh [Applause] yay [Music] we safely got it on the ground this is black walnut most you guys already know that it's about nine feet long this is the small end right here and it's 34 inches guys check that out 34 inches on the diameter and down here on the large end we're at 40 inches that is a nice log right there friends walnut that size is hard to come by that is a good one and i know what you're wondering when's that going to get on the sawmill well probably sometime this month not sure when but we'll get this on there sometime in november what do you think mama cat you like it she has nothing to say that's a shocker there's two things about sawmills number one you never know what's going to be inside of a log when you open it up and number two you never know what's going to show up at your sawmill i was not expecting this today guys but i got a call about it and i was really happy to see it can't wait to get this on the mail all right guys finally i'm up here at the sawmill i've been trying to get up here all day but i had so many logs come in this week i've been moving logs all day today so on the sawmill this afternoon we got a nice sassafras this is one that i picked up a few days ago i think it's eight feet long it is eight and a half now in the timber industry when people talk about logs being eight twelve and sixteen there's always a few extra inches on the end to allow for checking this one's eight foot six usually they're about eight foot four around here every area is probably a little bit different but when you say you've got a 12 foot lodge or 16 foot long it's actually four or five inches longer but this one right here is decently straight but there's a lot of taper in it a lot more taper in it than i saw when i picked it up to be honest with you have to use these toe boards to raise this uh small end up there's a lot of taper in this log we'll fold that here in just a second oh i'm off camera guys y'all can't see me the diameter on this other end is 20 inches down here on the operator side we're looking at 16 inches so about a four inch difference and the pith is really offset right there it's up here toward the top that's the center of the tree it should be about right there so it's off about three answers right there so we'll have to work around that now we're doing five cooler boards on this log i don't see any major defects or nothing going on so it should be some really nice boards hopefully and sassafras is kind of unique guys it doesn't really get big enough to saw most of the time it's hard to find stuff like this it's a hardwood but it's really soft uh windsor chair seat makers uh or windsor chair makers rather they like a sassafras for the seats because it's kind of easy to carve even though it is a hardwoods you know it's pretty soft kind of poplar and it's got a really unique color to it it's kind of orange yellowish color and the really uh i guess the most unique thing about it is the smell of it i was telling my friend mike who was here a few minutes ago about this stuff it smells just like root beer when you saw into it guys it's amazing the older that comes off this log and the more you saw the more it fills this room up with the smell of root beer it's crazy really unique stuff but i'm glad i got my hands on it and it's going to make some really nice lumber for a woodworker out there somewhere i think this will be some really nice cabinets or tabletops it's not wide enough for a windsor chair seat they need their chair seats to be about 22 inches wide we'll be lucky to get 10 inch boards out of this one based on the taper but you never know so without further ado let's get going and see what it looks like and uh real quick guys let me plug my patreon site real fast if you're not a member of patreon you can go support me over there there's a link down below and there's some benefits you get from that you get one-on-one conversations with me if you need help with sawmill or kiln drying another thing is you get these videos before they go on youtube without any ads on them and you also find out how much these logs cost such as that big walnut that just came in the guys on patreon will know how much that law cost and how much i hope to get out of it when i saw it in slabs so there's a few perch right there if you want to go check that out i really appreciate it you can join for a dollar a month it's not like it's really expensive or nothing like that there's a link down below and another thing people are asking me about these suspenders my friend chris killinger does not make these anymore if he ever does start making them again i'll let you guys know but uh right now he's not making them so let's get going guys and see what we can get done i mean if i get humming real good we may get this log knocked out who knows i'm using the joe main silver tip turbo seven as usual inch and a half oh 55 on the thickness that's the best blade i've ever ran guys i love those blades let's get going guys this is exciting i'm not solid sansa frass in over a year [Music] so yes [Music] [Music] that was real quick the reason i'm not dragging these boards back is because i've got a large stack of maple back here i need to get that away and i'm grade sawing today i'm looking for my best face to saw from and there's not a bad face on this log i tell you it's a nice one 11 and a half inches right here and out of the four different faces this is probably the best one although all of them would be just fine with me but this one right here is probably the best it has less lane on the sides of it and it's about yeah about 11 and a half good stuff and something else i did right there i don't know if you guys noticed or not but i used my laser to line up the pith from end to end that laser is just super handy right there i wouldn't have a sawmill without it now that i have one i wish my 40 would have had one you could put them on a 40. you could put them on any solid meal but with wood mizer i think you can put them on the 40 the 50 and the 70 and maybe the slabber as well the lx250 i'm not sure i'm not sure about that but you can put a laser on any sawmill as far as that goes but this one right here is super handy especially for lining up the pith and also making your cuts i've noticed i've taken off less bark cut since i've had that laser used to i had to judge it and try to eyeball it and see where my blade was going to land and sometimes i would take off too much and sometimes too little but with that laser you see where your blade's going so it really takes a lot of the air out of it good stuff so i'm making good timing here guys i got 25 minutes to solve a few of these boards show them to you guys and break down these cameras and i think i can get a few of them done not all of them but maybe about three or four before i gotta shut down for the night we'll finish this up tomorrow i promise so hang in there with me guys good stuff i wish you guys could smell this it smells just like root beer just like [Music] [Music] uh [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Applause] you
