give the lord a round of applause folks aren't you glad to be in church today amen amen well welcome everyone it it's good to see each and every one of you here today uh whether you're here in person or or you're watching online you you are a part of the good shepherd family you know and uh we're honored and thrilled to have you all here and if you're watching online please introduce yourself and let us know who you are and where you're watching from because we really do want to know where you are watching from well we are continuing on with our series and this is part two of our series that we are calling me in my big mouth you know right and that title is intentional okay because it's not you in your big mouth it's me in my big mouth so be careful no throwing elbows today okay because uh i i think it's got mike i think it's gonna get a little uh get a little bit uh tense today because this is a touchy topic that we're gonna learn about today and uh and last week we kind of we kind of led the groundwork and we had identified that this series is kind of relatable to all of us because we have one of two problems right either we get in a lot of trouble with our big mouth or we're not honest enough to admit it and we're just all liars right and those are our two problems and and we're going to be addressing both of them all throughout this series and last week it was a great kickoff to our series and i know that today that you're going to get a lot from god's word and the principle that he wants you to learn today and last week we learned that uh there is one little simple principle what one little takeaway one little life-altering changing principle that if you would begin to apply it in your life it would literally change the way you speak and we even put hand motions to it you guys remember that right hand motions right you remember that come on do it with me we started with our fist clinch right and then we said and then we said we got to be quick to listen slow to speak okay right remember everybody come on switch come on it'll be fun i promise you right here we go we got to be quick to listen slow to speak now i don't know how many of you practiced that principle this past week but i can tell you that it is an important one because so often our big mouth gets us into big time trouble isn't that true right our mouth gets us into trouble right and and sometimes it's the mouth of others that gets us into trouble right if you're married you know what i'm talking about right because every married man has had his lovely bride's big mouth get him into trouble right right now husbands if you're here mike i wouldn't laugh right now i i wouldn't clap or laugh i wouldn't say anything a matter of fact i would just look straight ahead because i want you to go home with her right but we know but we know that's true right like like she's she's committed you to something like she's made maybe dinner plans at a restaurant that you probably wouldn't have made plans to or or she said yes to going out with that couple that you think is kind of weird right or she's volunteered you uh uh for that activity at school for for your kids that you probably wouldn't have never volunteered for that that's just the way it is you know she and her big mouth has got you into trouble mark's looking at me and laughing and and of course every woman here right is yeah oh yeah well that's nothing compared to my husband's big mouth right and man we married man we all know that's true also right because i i think i got permanent bruises on my chins from all the times that my lovely bride has kicked me under the table to stop me from saying something that i should have said right me and my big mouth and of course if you're a parent then you know that that your kids mouths have gotten you in all kinds of trouble because kids they they lack the filter that that we adults should all have right the problem is this though we know the filter most of the time we speak so quickly that we bypass the filter in our communication most of the time we are not quick to listen and slow to speak most of the time in our community communication we're the complete opposite we're quick to speak and slow to listen right today i want to turn that around i want to help you turn that around right in fact we're going to be trying hard in this series to learn how to listen first and speak last instead of speaking first and listening last i want to i want to help you know what do you do when you are quick to listen and slow to speak well what do you say when you are slow to speak what what words do you use when you finally get around to speaking what what filter do you run your words through because when you open your mouth you should have a filter on it right and in fact the bible describes it like this in proverbs chapter 17 verse 27 it says and i love the way it says it it says the one who has knowledge uses words with restraint right in other words smart people now to put a filter on their words now let's all be honest right filtering our words it's not easy right in fact in fact it's much easier just to open up our mouth and just let it fly right it's much easier just just to say what we're going to say and let the chips fall where they fall it's much easier for me just just to say whatever i want to say and just let you deal with what you heard right and let me tell you yes you you can live that way and you can talk like that you can be like that and and folk in fact most of us have spent most of our lives filter less right but but i think we could all agree that nothing has gone us into more trouble than our big mouse so why not put a filter on it right i think it would be better in fact the bible actually leads us into the realization that there is a better way to live a better way to communicate a better way to talk a better way to use your mouth and it's when we filter our words you see i want to teach you today now this is going to be just a real simple message today okay but i want to teach you uh the filter for your words from the bible and i'm going to guarantee you something i'm going to promise you today because i've been working with this this message for the last two weeks and and i know that if you were if you if you see your words through this filter it would change the way you talk right now let me let me set up the filter because it's important it's important for you to first understand the context before you see the filter so so today we're going to study a passage from scripture that a guy named paul wrote and paul is a guy who wrote about two-thirds of the new testament and and many of his writings they were letters that were written to churches must like much like our church is right churches that met like like we meet and the letter that we're going to be looking at today was written from paul to a church in a place called ephesus okay and in this letter paul begins to give some instruction and he sets up what ultimately becomes the filter for our words now it's important it's important for you to understand the context okay so so we're going to dig into this come on let's let's learn about all this together paul writes this in ephesians chapter 4 verses 17-29 we're going to begin with verse 17. he says live no longer as the gentiles do for they are hopelessly confused paul says they are hopelessly confused now let's stop there okay let's make sure that you that you understand something okay now paul is predominantly writing to gentiles right so it makes it kind of a little weird that paul is saying live no longer as gentiles do right that's what he's saying however what paul is referring to when he uses the term gentiles he is referring to people who have not yet believed in jesus christ right people who have not yet placed their faith in jesus now in our terms he is referring to people who are not yet christ followers and he says don't live like they live right and what's so interesting is paul is predominantly writing to gentiles who have placed their faith in jesus and so what he is saying to them is don't live like you used to live don't do what you used to do right and in a minute you're going to see that paul says don't talk like you used to talk right and i think what paul is telling us is that there is a better way now listen to me it's important to get this right because paul was saying don't live like that because our lives are supposed to change to be changed when we meet jesus and i think that's that's important that you understand this principle today your life changes when you meet jesus right now you might look the same you might you might be with the same people you might go to the same workplace you might have the same job but you are supposed to be different okay you're supposed to change and paul is saying hey you got to change from how you used to be don't live like the gentiles like you used to live they're hopelessly confused that's what paul is saying right and then he goes on and then it gets a little bit sticky here okay paul says this in verse 18 through 19. their minds are full of darkness they wander far from life god gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him they had no sense of shame they lived for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity to which you're probably thinking oh wait a minute paul man that sounds a little harsh i mean that that sounds a little judgmental sounds a little bit insulting doesn't it right and maybe maybe you're here today and you're not a believer or maybe you're watching online and you haven't placed your your faith in jesus you wouldn't call yourself a christian or a christ follower and this is one of the reasons why you're not right because in your mind you feel like us christians in our bible just put down judge come down on people who are not on the same page as us and that's what it kind of sounds like paul is doing right here like like he's saying shame on you like like you're a bad person like you do bad things but let's just pause for a moment okay not so fast because i don't think that paul is actually judging i don't think that paul is actually insulting right it's important for you to understand this okay i think what paul is doing is that he's simply acknowledging a different world view right now listen to me okay because i need you to understand this you have to understand this as christ followers as christians we are to see the world differently and according to how we see the world we are to live in the world differently right you following me shake your heads up and down this means yes pastor i'm with you right what paul was saying is that the gentiles see the world differently and therefore live in the world differently now this is really important okay if you're going to understand the filter that we're going to be talking about right that we're going to be describing later on today you see in ancient times when this letter was written there was no moral compass there was no sense of morality now you have to understand this the gentile way of living that paul was talking about they didn't place value on morality they didn't place value on on simple things like honoring women and children they didn't place value on things like self-control or self-discipline it just didn't exist in their worldview at that time right and that and that's one of the things that makes you know christianity so unique that suddenly christianity steps into a culture where there's no value on ethics there's no value on morality no value on people no value on on loving others as yourself no value on controlling your own desires there's no value placed on any of that at all and christianity steps in and it places a high value on that it's one of the things that that sets it apart and paul says don't live with that former world view don't live with the way of thinking from the past okay are you following me okay there's some of you are some of you i was like giving me this blank stare i don't know if you're following me or not all right so we're going to dig into this a little bit more okay we're going to learn a little more let's just work a little harder okay paul goes on and he says this right in verse 20 through 24. he says this but that isn't what you learned about christ right that was the old way of thinking it's not what you learned about christ as paul is saying since you heard about jesus we have learned the truth that comes from him and then here's what you do okay throw off your old sinful nature and your formal way of life which is corrupt by lust and deception because paul's saying that's the old way right instead paul says this and i love this part instead let the spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes put on your new nature create it to be like god truly righteous and holy now what paul is saying so that we're all on the same page there's an old way and there's a new way right there's a gentile way and there's a jesus way there's a simple way and there's a better way paul was saying that if you are a follower of jesus you are to choose the new way the jesus way the better way and the holy spirit is going to help you do that okay and then paul go then paul goes on and he does this paul starts to point some things out that should be different in your life right paul starts to point the finger at some some ways that you should live that you shouldn't live anymore right let me give you some examples okay because i know you want some paul says that you should stop lying right now i told you that we were going to talk about it right you should stop lying the old way is lying the new way is truth-telling the gentile way is to tell lies the jesus way is to tell truth the sinful way is to tell a lie the better way of living is to be truthful and we would all agree with that right it's better to be truthful right we all agree it's better to tell the truth and that's and that's what paul was saying and if you agree with that then then you have the christian worldview but in this time it was unique in that day and then paul goes on and he also says this stop stealing and start working for what you got there's an old way and there's a new way the old way is to steal the new way is to work the gentile ways to steal the jesus way is to work for what you have the sinful way is to steal the better way is to work for what you got and again we would all say well yeah yeah we we know that right and why because we have all been so heavily influenced by a christian worldview that's just what we think but you see when paul wrote these words some 2000 years ago it was like brand new to them it was a new way to see the world don't still work for what you got now we would all agree that those two things uh are are are good right it's better to tell the truth it's better to work for what you got and then paul gets to the topic of our series and paul says there's actually an old way to talk and there's a new way to talk and then he gives us a filter okay this is the filter paul says this in ephesians chapter 4 verse 29 don't let any come on say that next word with me everyone don't let any unwholesome that's the word talk come out of your mouth but only what is everybody come on helpful for building others up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen this is the filter this was new in paul's day because gentiles talk with unwholesome words but paul says christians should talk only with helpful words right and i might even go so far and say you know what this is still new today because according to paul people who don't believe they talk unwholesomely but not us christians we we're to talk with helpful words right do you see the filter right let me make it simple for you okay you might want to write this down this is the filter right on wholesome stays in helpful comes out i'm telling you that that if you would filter your words with a wholesome staying in and only helpful coming out it would change how you talk this week unwholesome is the gentile way helpful is the jesus way unhelsum is the old way helpful is the new way on wholesome is a sinful way but helpful is the better way just just think about how much better your communication would be if you use this filter right just think about the last argument you had right like on the way to church today right would your argument have gone better if unwholesome stayed in and helpful would it come out i mean think about the last thing you posted on facebook the last comment you made would have been helpful if unwholesome stayed in and only helpful came out that little word unwholesome it's it's it's maybe not one that we really use a lot right it's not necessarily a a word that we say every day so so let me help you understand what it literally meant you see impulse day when he used the word unwholesome he was literally talking about a commonly used word that probably conjured up a fair amount of of sensory overload for people because what paul was literally using when that word was that we use in in this day in age and in the greek language to describe the smell of rotten fish unwholesome right they would walk by past the market and fish had been sitting out in the sun all day long and the word that they would use to describe that smell was unwholesome right as they're walking by the fish and they're gagging they would say wholesome right now imagine today if we took this message to to a whole nother level right and while you were listening to the message today we had our deacons put a smelly rotten fish in each one of your cars so that way when you left you would remember this principle yeah some of you are thinking right now did i like my car right now can i just explain the principle that paul is saying you know he is saying that a lot of times your words smell like a rotten fish and what paul is describing is this that if your words smell like a rotten fish or if your words get a reaction from somebody like a rotten fish does right if your words smell like a rotten smelly fish then you need a filter for your words that that's the old way that that's the gentile way there's a better way that's what paul is saying right there's a better way imagine if you never had fish mouth again imagine if the impact of your words they never smelled like a smelly fish does right and i don't know what some of you are thinking you would say well pastor if that's the case then i would say far less words right and maybe that's the point and wholesome stays in but helpful comes out it's a new filter for your life it's a new filter for your communication and it's better paul would say right it's not easier but it's better and i'll tell you why because generally speaking when we filter our words we use foolish filters right we we toss our words around like like they are nothing right and usually the filters we use are silly things like a lot of times we'll use the the filter of humor and we'll say well is this going to be funny because it's funny i'm going to say it and we just toss our words around right let me tell you something if you use humor as your filter there is no line that you will not cross right just tossing all words around and and i often use this filter and i'm not i hate to admit it i don't like to admit it but i always use a filter of is he going to get a reaction because i love to use my words if it's going to get a reaction so i'll say is this going to get a reaction because if it's getting a reaction i'm going to say it right he just tossed my words around all right all right and i also use this one and you do too well it's just my opinion right we just toss our words out it's just my opinion as if we can say anything if we just preference it with it's just my opinion in my humble opinion right if and if we use that filter then we begin to say anything we begin to comment on anything we begin to post everything right and then we begin to start sending all kinds of emails because it's just my opinion it's a filter what filter do you use right sometimes we use a filter of how we were raised if you were raised by a dad who screamed and yelled all the time then you use your word to scream and yell if you were raised by by a mom who who used her words to kind of nag and pick and demean then you use your words the same way it's a filter it's just the way we were raised right we just toss our words around a lot of times our filters are are who we are around right we get so we get so used to hearing certain words that we just start using them ourselves we get so used to to to hearing uh foul jokes that we tell thou jokes we get so used to cursing that we start cursing and sometimes we don't even know we're cursing let me tell you there have been times after a service and i've had someone come up to me and say oh pastor paul that was a bleeping good service today and they didn't even know they were cursing in church to the pastor we just toss our words around we throw them around like oh it this is going to make me feel better so i'm going to say it i'll cut you down to lift me up i'll listen to your story but i'm going to one-up your story with my own story right we just toss our words around and then what happens our words create a big mess and we're standing in the middle of it our words they create such chaos and such confusion our words they damage they hurt they drive wedges and they create disunity and we're left standing in the middle of our words unwholesome words come out of our mouth they they smell rotten like a fish and it creates a massive mess and paul says that we need a filter right we need a filter let me put the verse back up so everybody can can can see it because a filter what we need and paul says don't let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth right because it's just it's just going to create a big mess but only what is helpful and i love this next phrase for building others up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen you see on the one hand paul is saying smelly fish keep it in but on the underhand paul says helpful words build others up let it out that little phrase build others up it also created a sensory experience for the listeners listeners at that time because that little phrase it meant something in the greek in the greek it was a construction term a term that meant that you can actually bring order where there is chaos right so on the one hand your words can create a big mess and a whole lot of chaos but the on the other on the other hand paul says that if you use your words the right way if you build others up with your words you can actually create order with your words if you would be someone to take some time to be quick to listen and slow to speak then you can actually experience something better with your own words you can actually filter your words to ask the question this is paul is saying is it going to be helpful to that person that's going to hear these words is it going to encourage that person or discourage them is this going to build them up or is it going to tear them down the same words that create a mess can actually be used to create a structure the same words that create chaos can actually be used to create an order and the same words and this is the remarkable thing okay that tear people down can actually be used to build people up and what paul is saying is this our words are to be just like a construction zone that builds others up our words are act can actually become the structure that allows people to stand on them our words can be the foundation in somebody's life right and today i stand up here as your pastor on the words of those people that have encouraged me all throughout the years today i stand on the word of those people who have who have built me up today i stand on the words of people who have said you know what on wholesome words i'm not going to speak i'm not even going to let them out but helpful words i'm going to speak i'm going to let out and wholesome stays in helpful comes out so how do we apply this to our life right because i know there's a lot of people there's a lot of you who here today who would say pastor this is a struggle for me right and i know this the struggle is real and you would say it's hard for me not to speak on wholesome words but instead speak that which is helpful how do i do that well i think there's one little principle that'll help you and it's just this the more i let helpful words out the easier it'll be for me to keep unwholesome words all in now listen to me i am not challenging you today to go home and just keep all those unwholesome words in no i'm challenge you instead to replace them to prove replace them with letting helpful words out and the more you let helpful words out the easier it'll be to keep on wholesome words in now can i just tell you some critical areas in our lives where this kind of applies to all of us right there's a couple of applications where i think if you would be diligent with this principle this week you would see a big difference right and probably the the biggest one for me and the one that i'm most passionate about is it's for those of us who who are parents okay parents i don't know if you can fully understand overestimate the power of your words and i don't mean to to alienate anybody i don't want to exclude anyone with this statement but but i really do believe based on my experience especially for those of us who are fathers okay dads listen to me right the weight of your words are more than you could ever dream or imagine so what i would say to all of us who are parents and and i don't always get this right either okay i struggle with this too i understand a challenge but for all of us who are parents let me just say this what would it be like this week if you just said lord filter my words with my kids help me to only speak that which is most helpful to them let me tell you that would make a big difference you see because because i want to build a foundation for my kids with my words let me take it to another level of application here okay because i think i think what our culture our culture right now what it desperately needs is for us to filter our words i i just feel that our that our culture the culture that we're in everybody is saying everything whatever they want everybody is posting whatever they want there's no filtering going on well what would it look like if those of us just in this room we walked out of here saying we are going to filter our words unwholesome stays in helpful comes out that's the filter i'm gonna give you one more okay one more area where i think this is critical i think it's critical for your christian witness right i actually think this is what paul was getting at right everybody else talks that way but not you do you realize people may never see you pray people may never see you read the bible people may never know that you go to church people may never see you engaged in worship but everybody will hear your words unwholesome stays in helpful goes out it's better it's better and here's how i know that you know it's better because some of you have grown up with the impact of a wholesome word said to you some of you have lived in a house where all you ever heard are on wholesome words some of you are carrying today the scars from the words that were not filtered and spoken to you and you know the hurt you know the pain you know the damage you know the destruction you know the mess and paul would say no it's better you'll be a better boss a better spouse a better friend a better parent a better child right a better employee a better coworker a better neighbor a better citizen because a better way to live is with filter words let me tell you one last thing okay gonna wrap up here because you're going to be leaving here today checking yourself for smelly fish mouth right all week long but i have to tell you just one more thing you cannot do this alone we read last week that no one can tame the tongue right you can't do this alone but with the help of jesus and his holy spirit that lives inside of you you can filter your words and your words can be what others stand upon unwholesome stays in helpful comes out amen come on bow your heads close your eyes and pray with me father today i thank you in jesus name for your words lord that that changes us right now from from the inside out i i thank you that this is a practical and applicable word that it helps us to change the way that we talk even today lord we we need your help so holy spirit guide us from the inside out filter our words unwholesome stays in and helpful comes out so that others may stand upon them we love you jesus and it's in your name that we pray and all god's people said amen and amen come on would you give a lord a round of applause for his word today come on do something brothers and sisters great to be here with you this morning and um this morning as we come to our tithe and offering part of our service like to welcome those of you who are online and uh this morning i want to share with you from matthew 25 26 and verse 33. therefore i tell you do not worry about your life what you will eat or drink or about your body what you will wear is not life more than food and the body more than clothes look at the birds of the air they neither sow nor reap nor gather in the barns and yet your heavenly father feeds them are you not more valued than they and then verse 33 but as seek first his kingdom of god his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well while there's much to be learned from the about money and giving in the preceding passages chapter six i want to focus on on these three verses because they teach us that we can trust god to meet our needs and it's what we were created to do as jesus said we see this as we watch the birds glorifying their creator and doing exactly what he created them to do being hunter-gatherers working for their food and jesus said nonetheless it is ultimately god who feeds them well this is also true for us but all the more now jesus is not saying in these passages that we should not reap nor gather into barns what he's saying here the main point is that we should not worry because as we glorify god seeking first his kingdom and fulfilling that for which the lord made us our heavenly father will meet our needs so this morning as you bring your offering enjoy the freedom to give generously without worry to the work of our lord and savior jesus christ let's pray heavenly father we thank you that you continually meet our needs lord god you are there in in everything that we do encouraging us uh with your words lord both in our devotional time in your word and in the message that you bring to us each week and we just thank you and praise you lord god for your teachings and how they transform our lives and we just pray this morning lord god that as we bring our offering that we'd be able to come knowing that as we give generously you will meet all of our needs we have no worry and no fear because this is all about your work and as we submit to you seek your kingdom and your righteousness we will be surely blessed and we just uh thank you lord for your faithfulness and we pray all this father in christ's name amen please come bring your offering we are love good morning and uh praise the lord for the message was it able to attend the service because we are really starting some great things in our church and we're starting a much more deeper bible study so we started with with chico and with judilyn and we hope that next time if you would like to attend a sunday school or much more deeper on the study of the word of god it is available so we are doing it 9 30 up to 10 30 and then after that you can attend the second service okay so that's the deal of it because we don't want you to miss the second service but at the same time there's a beauty of it because a lot of information already and i know like me you have some questions just like chico has a lot of questions and with all of the informations that we are receiving from different sources sometimes we are already asking what is the truth and we have a very interesting discussion about the book of enoch that maybe some of you have have read or know about so what are the sources because always remember where are those books comes from because it's already a mingling of truth and of truth and lies so we need to use always the word of god so we will be opening this 9 30 but my recommendation is please always attend the second service okay not in replacement of the worship sir not in replacement of the worship service this is on online this is also on top of the small groups that we are doing every every week so if you are not member of a small group i encourage you to be part of one small group and if you know of any small group that are that you would like to attend to please approach pastor paul myself and even pastor carlos and some of our elders and we will we will lead you to one small group to have a much more deeper study of the word of god for somewhere announcement additional announcement i we're doing the announcements one by one we don't want you to we don't want to be confused a lot of those other announcements so i will doing it probably two weeks announcements we will reserve all the remaining announcements in the coming in the coming weeks the september announcement and even the october announcement for yes not to be confused so but this time on sunday we will have one worship service please remember this and please relate to others we only have one special worship service on sunday at 10 o'clock why pastor because we have a missionary coming from the philippines that they will minister to us through the message of the world and through music so we would like you to be a part of this and there will be this will be a great special musical presentation that i will be asking them to sing even one or two tagalog songs and maybe some of you of course i understand that you don't understand tagalog but at least you feel that oh i am not in america i am in a different country you know you're dreaming of going to other countries but because of the pandemic you don't want to go just like myself so we'll bring this other country to this church okay so we would like you to invite other people to on sunday at 10 o'clock because you will really like this family because these are families of singers these are family of pastors there are these are family of god servants so 10 o'clock and if you would like to go on youtube you will find them tikka family t-i-c-a it's a filipino singing group okay so uh they are actually members of some famous group in the philippines the madrigal singer and they got married and they decided to just give their voices to the lord so on sunday ten o'clock worship service there are no two servants okay so let's all stand and let's pray and let's ask god let's uh let's sing this song the last song of we are one in the spirit i have one more minute to do this we're trying to respect your time and at the same time to at the same time we would like also to worship the lord by having this song we are one in the spirit make this is our prayer as we leave the place in the spirit we are one with the lord christians let's all close our eyes let's hold our head let us think about the message and the bible keeps on reminding us let us not just be healers of the word but doers of the word i would like you to pray ask god to help you apply and do the message that you have heard this morning father you are listening lord to the prayers of your people and after we heard the message lord we can apply it lord and do it and we know dear god that it's only through your holy spirit that we can do the words because human person cannot do it actually there might be some who heard the message and they cannot understand it and we know the reason why because the spirit of god is not on him or on her but for your people who has the holy spirit in their hearts they can understand it and not only we can understand it lord but by your grace and mercy we can do it lord this is the reason why we have the service to learn from you and as we go out we would like to be doers of the words so that people will see jesus through our lives to our words and that they will come to know the lord jesus christ as the lord and personal savior father we thank you even for this song that because of jesus christ we are one and lord because jesus christ is the author of love we will go out of this building sharing that love to others showing that because of christ we can love them and that is one way for us to be your disciples thank you for each one may you keep on blessing it's one of us here lord you know the time that they've spent lord for you and lord i am holding on to your promise that if we your people will seek first your kingdom and your righteousness all these things will be added unto us so lord thank you and as you dismiss your people may the love of god the father the grace of the lord jesus christ and the communion of the holy spirit be with us all and all the people of god will say amen god bless you all you
