[Music] is [Music] to faith and hope and charity [Music] in these last days [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit good morning good morning good morning today's mass the holy mouse is offered by mary and des cunningham for the deliverance of ukraine and the conversion of the heart of vladimir putin and his associates our hearts are in solidarity of prayer with the peoples of both ukraine and russia and belarus as we look out into our world we see a lot of angry people much yelling and running around it's a wonderful experience to be passionate about loving god and our neighbor and even about loving our enemy but it is a terrible thing to be a slave of our human passions let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning rend your hearts and not your clothing return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relents from punishing who knows whether the lord will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him a grain offering and a drink offering to be presented to the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion sanctify a fast call a solemn assembly gather the people sanctify the congregation assemble the aged gather the children even infants in the breast let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her canopy between the vestibule and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep let them say spare your people o lord and do not make your heritage a mockery a byword among the nations why should it be said among the peoples where is their god then the lord became jealous for his land and had pity have mercy o lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ since god is making his appeal through us we entreat you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake god made christ to be sin who knew no sin so that in christ we might become the righteousness of god as we work together with him we urge you also not to accept the grace of god in vain for the lord says at an acceptable time i have listened to you and on a day of salvation i have helped you see now is the acceptable time see now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] to you lord king of eternal glory today do not harden your hearts but listen to the voice of god praise [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you jesus said to the disciples beware of practicing your piety before people in order to be seen by them for then you have no reward from your father in heaven so whenever you give alms do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be praised by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your alms may be done in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners so that they may be seen by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but whenever you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you fast do not look dismal like the hypocrites for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ we are part of this world we cannot help but be sad these days as we witness the bear harassing the lamb in eastern europe but we know that when jesus visits the bear will lie down with the lamb jesus loves us and enables us when there are enemies for them to become friends brothers and sisters have you ever suffered from heartbreak i hope so we our lives are not truly full until we have experienced something like that today as we enter into lent the lord is offering us the grace precisely of a broken heart we're not talking about a little selfish heart that is pained because it isn't getting what it wants no [Music] we're talking about a heart courageous enough to love others and to go out and care for others and in this process of going out experiences rejection [Music] and is wounded hurt by the rejection jesus himself wept over ancient jerusalem because he who is love in person offered himself to his people but they rejected him they rejected god's love the suffering of jesus is love unable to give itself to those who are unwilling to receive you've heard the expression it is better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all to enable us to love more fully god is offering to break all the self-absorption and self-preoccupation [Music] which are part of the human condition unfortunately but which form a hard crust over our hearts preventing us from feeling sympathy with the sufferings of others causing us to turn away to not look not see not hear preventing us from reaching out with words gestures and actions of love of compassion and caring lent is a great gift from god every year to his people and the christian spiritual practices of prayer fasting and almsgiving have great value and effect not only in those who practice them but also for all those around them to the degree that these practices come from our deepest heart out of a genuine desire to leave selfishness behind to love god by going out to love our neighbor and even our enemy to be willing to be disturbed to receive others with a hospitable heart how many of us truly listen to others when we're seated at the table if there's never a moment of silence however joyful the meal and the company may seem to be if there's never a moment of silence is there really listening or is it just an avalanche and a tumble of words falling over one another [Music] it's not just hearing other people's words but letting their words and all that is hidden behind those words to enter into us to move us to disturb us profoundly and to let all of those meanings become part of us and have a real effect on how we carry ourselves in the company of those people how we look at others and how we behave towards others a heart deeply listening to others will necessarily be broken that love can come in and go out the mystery of our human existence brothers and sisters is that our heart the human heart has a set of gates you know big gates one set of gates now when we shut the gates against the possibility of being hurt the gates are closed no love can come in no love can go out no forgiveness can go out no forgiveness can come in there's nothing more tragic than a human heart with the gates closed and shuttered so lent is another an occasion for us to put our trust elsewhere than in ourselves to put our trust in god have you noticed in the scriptures today that there is a lot about god listening to us there is a lot about god taking powerful action in the world but whenever we ask the question what is god doing why isn't god doing something about it it's often because we're pushing god out of the way we're throwing ourselves into the heart of the action trying to take over trying to fix it trying to resolve it trying to impose our will on others and god waits for us to be finished with all of this busyness because god cannot really bring about his reign cannot really give life cannot really bring peace until we are willing to stop and become willing to receive what it is that god wants to give father may your holy spirit break open our hardened hearts so that we can love like jesus by accepting to receive first his love oh my jesus i trust in you mother mary pray for us saint joseph pray for us lord have mercy on your children in ukraine belarus and russia we give praise to you o god the father and the son and the holy spirit dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which he will put on our heads in penitence we also pray for all those who are joining us through the internet or the television and are unable to physically be in a church today to receive the ashes that the lord will also give them the grace o god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord amen so [Music] blessing of peace and repentance on all your children throughout the world the response to our prayer of the faithful is lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer for all christians as we enter this special season of lent we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the nations of the world seeking truth and peace we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for people everywhere who struggle to meet their basic needs we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer [Music] for the community of marirense cathedral as we begin our lenten journey together we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer and for the intentions of and families of all those joining us today from wherever you are we pray to you lord r lord hear our prayer father in heaven we choose to put our confidence in you in your love and in your son jesus by the power of your holy spirit reigning forever and ever amen [Music] oh mercy foreign [Music] accept the contrite prayers we raised in this [Music] your healing grace restore to life sins are great our wills are weak but you're forgiven [Music] and for the glory of your name to know our wounded souls reclaimed o grand most holy trinity [Music] increase our merit and your praise [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleansed from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns for ever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim [Music] is [Music] the second prayer for reconciliation brothers and sisters you may not realize this but the the hebrew word hosanna is impossible to translate because it means too many things it is a cry of praise to give glory to god but it is also a cry of the heart see how poor we are how miserable we are have mercy on us hosanna is a wonderful prayer you therefore almighty father we bless through jesus christ your son who comes in your name he himself is the word that brings salvation the hand you extend to sinners the way by which your peace is offered to us when we ourselves had turned away from you on account of our sins you brought us back to be reconciled oh lord so that converted at last to you we might love one another through your son whom for our sake you handed over to death and now celebrating the reconciliation christ has brought us we entreat you sanctify these gifts by the outpouring of your spirit so that they may become the body and blood of your son whose command we fulfill when we celebrate these mysteries for when about to give his life to set us free as he reclined at supper he himself took bread into his hands and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way on that same evening he took the chalice of blessing in his hands confessing your mercy and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death [Music] celebrating therefore the memorial of the death and resurrection of your son who left us this pledge of his love we offer you what you have bestowed on us the sacrifice of perfect reconciliation holy father we humbly beseech you to accept us also together with your son and in this saving banquet graciously to endow us with his very spirit who takes away everything that estranges us from one another may he make your church a sign of unity and an instrument of your peace among all people and may he keep us in communion with cristia our bishop and alay his auxiliary pope francis and all the bishops and your entire people just as you have gathered us now at the table of your son so also bring us together with the glorious virgin mary mother of god queen of the world with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and all the saints with our brothers and sisters and those of every race and tongue who have died in your friendship bring us to share with them the unending banquet of unity in a new heaven and a new earth where the fullness of your peace will shine forth in christ our lord through him with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever
