book of wisdom the godless say to themselves let us lie in wait for the virtuous man since he annoys us and opposes our way of life reproaches us for our breaches of the law and accuses us of playing false to our upbringing let us see if what he says is true let us observe what kind of end he himself will have if the virtuous man is god's son god will take his part and rescue him from the clutches of his enemies let us test him with cruelty and with torture and thus explore this gentleness of his and put his endurance to the proof let us condemn him to a shameful death since he will be looked after we have his word for it the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] and lord upholds my life [Music] the lord upholds my [Music] oh god save me by your name by your power uphold my course oh billing heart and praise your name for it is good the lord upholds my life the lord upholds my life [Music] [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james wherever you find jealousy and ambition you find this harmony and wicked things of every kind being done whereas the wisdom that comes down from above is essentially something pure it also makes for peace and is kindly and considerate it is full of compassion and shows itself by doing good nor is there any trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it peacemakers when they work for peace sow the seeds which will bear fruit in holiness where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start isn't it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves you want something and you haven't got it so you are prepared to kill you have an ambition that you cannot satisfy so you fight to get your way by force why you don't have what you want is because you don't pray for it when you do pray and don't get it it is because you have not prayed properly you have prayed for something to indulge your own desires the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] through the good news god called us to share the glory of our lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you oh lord after leaving the mountain jesus and his disciples made their way through galilee and he did not want anyone to know because he was instructing his disciples he was telling them the son of man will be delivered into the hands of men they will put him to death and three days after he has been put to death he will rise again but they did not understand what he said and were afraid to ask him they came to kaepernaum and when he was in the house he asked them what were you arguing about on the road they said nothing because they have been arguing which of them was the greatest so he sat down called the twelve to him and said if anyone wants to be first he must make himself last and servant of all he then took a little child set him in front of them put his arms around him and said to them anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ we can't help but observe that the behavior of the lord's disciples is both pitiful and amusing once again he attempts to prepare them for what lies ahead by spelling it out quite clearly the son of man will be delivered into the hands of men they will put him to death and after and three days after he has been put to death he will rise again now this is the second time our lord speaks to them of his passion and yet they remain confounded but they were too ashamed to seek clarification perhaps they did not want a repeat of what happened to peter when our lord publicly and harshly rebuked him or perhaps they were terrified their worst fears might be confirmed that our lord will actually die as he had predicted there is deep irony in the disciples misplaced attention our lord had badly finished describing his humiliating and excruciating death and they already conspiring to grab some glory of their own we can only imagine what they were thinking as our lord repeated his disturbing prediction perhaps this was going on in our minds we hear people in your name we hung with you when others rejected you we handed over the bread and the fish to 5 000 don't we deserve a little more than everyone else it's ironic foolish and entitled thinking and it is also certainly outrageous and tragic but perhaps there is a little bit more understanding this time around why do i say that the fact that they were in the midst of discussing who is the greatest may suggest that they were finally preparing for a succession plan who will take over the mantle of leadership after our lord's departure and in their simple but not so unreasonable reasoning they believe that the most important criterion is simply this the one who possesses all the necessary qualities to step in those massive shoes of our lord in other words the one who is greatest among them would be the one that would take over from our lord so as they argued about the proper criteria which greatness is to be measured they failed to see that our lord had already shown them the example of greatness demonstrated by his own willingness to accept the cross they had totally missed this because their definition of greatness would have excluded failure defeat and humiliation suffering wasn't on their checklist they found this confusing and even offensive christ had just emphasized the reality of his death and that would be a suggestion that his followers must also follow him must imitate him but these images of powerlessness and sacrifice have had little impact on the disciples values they are still grasping for power and status in the kingdom of heaven while avoiding the cross at the same time so instead of hearing our lord talk about his death and redefining greatness in terms of sacrifice in terms of coming in last for the sake of love they are still fighting to be first but our lord had to remind them if anyone wants to be first he must make himself last of all and servant of all this flies against the common understanding of greatness which entails priority or superiority over others great men are expected to have more influence prestige and power over ordinary folks instead our lord turns human thinking on its head the only way for a christian to be great is to put oneself last in priority and this is not just a pious thought but must be expressed in concrete action one must become the servant of all in both the ancient as well in today's modern world meekness and even humility are not seen as natural ingredients for success but rather signs of weakness omens of failure the powerful expect to be served and showered with honor and only the weak end up shamefully having to serve others but according to our lord true greatness will not look like this true greatness will offer engender weakness surrender defeat and even death so how would true greatness look like we have already seen it as seen john a test in his first epistle we are declaring to you what we have seen and heard so that you too may share our life our life is shared with the father and with his son jesus christ jesus christ is the face of greatness when true greatness came into our world he did not choose to be born in a palace but in a humble stable and laid in a feeding trough for animals he walked from town to town without a home without a place to stay he made some headlines with his message and miracles but he made many more enemies when the son of god came calling lowly fisherman to be his disciples at the end of his ministry he kneeled and washed their filthy undeserving feet the king of kings the greatest of all time humbled himself to the point of death even the most shameful painful kind of death true greatness lost his life on the cross for us and true greatness was revealed and glorified not defeated at the grave greatness he tells us belongs only to those who humble themselves like a child now the word for child and aramaic and greek can also mean a servant so the discussion on disciples servanthood naturally transitions into disciple child likeness our lord is not calling us to be childish that'd be to be childlike and our lord is also not claiming that children are naturally humble when our lord is what our lord is emphasizing is the objective reality of childhood how society and adults treat children adults are not expected to listen to children it is children who are expected to listen and obey the adults while adults teach in command the child's duty is to listen and obey children relay rely almost entirely on adults to survive their lot is that of dependence not independence likewise christians must cast off dreams of power or status and like a child learn to listen and obey and emit their total and ultimate dependence on god for all things but our lord is not only using the child as a model for discipleship but also explains that the child or the weak or the little ones are the object of our service we do not only show hospitality and serve the power in the rich those who can reward us with favors and who can spare us of their disfavors our lord tells us anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me in other words we have responsibilities toward those who seem most helpless or inconsequential those who are unable to repair us in welcoming them we are welcoming the lord and the one who sent him by according the respect and dignity to the powerless the disciples of offering great honor to almighty god such principles are entirely at odds with the world's way of doing things so many around us are motivated by a desire to get ahead of the next guy vips get priority and enjoy privileges over the common folk the underlings are meant to serve they are superiors and not the other way around and yet our law teaches us otherwise if anyone wants to be first he must make himself last of all and servant of all so if you aspire to be great give yourself to the small mundane easily overlook needs around you especially of the powerless and the voiceless and those who cannot pay you always remember that authority is about service not about gaining power expect no privileges or benefits for being a christian instead remember that your duty is to serve let us stand to profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things are made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and a dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen in today's gospel the lord said that those who wish to be first must be servants of all with humble service we pray for the needs of the church and for the world for our holy father pope francis and leaders of the church that they who wish to be the first in the church may begin from a position of servanthood setting out to inspire and empower others in the humble following of jesus let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for peace among nations that people of our day may come to see clearly that wars and conflicts begin with their own unruly passions and work instead to sow the fruit of righteousness and to cultivate peace let us pray to the lord r [Music] for the gift of wisdom from above so that we may be pure gentle and full of mercy and good fruits in the sight of our heavenly father let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the pope's intentions for resources to build a church and all other needs of our parish for our own needs and all the intentions offered for this mass let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer lord jesus you foretold your passion and death as you journey with your disciples along the way in the house you reveal that true discipleship is found in the desire to become the servant of all may we the household of the church be willing to shed our lives for the sake of the gospel so as to serve without counting the costs you live and reign forever and ever amen [Music] take my life and let it be consecrated take my hands and let them move [Music] take my voice and let me sing always hold me for my king always [Music] take my moments and my [Music] and make it die it shall be no longer mine take my heart it [Music] be is pray written that my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to god your mighty father may the lord accept the offering at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church receive with favor o law to pray the us life eternal [Music] and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the holes and powers of heaven we sing to him of your glory as without and we are acclaimed holy [Music] a full of your glory [Music] in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you what indeed holy o lord are found over holiness make holy therefore this kiss you pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become forester body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant [Music] which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord a bread of life and a chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be get into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and him and with him and in him o god almighty father in a unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] had a savior's command and formed by divine teaching with [Music] our father who art in heaven [Music] hallowed be dying like kingdom come thy will be done on the vessels in heaven give us this day our daily bread [Music] and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days dead by the love of your mercy
