There are a lot of different opinions on this.
Oh well. I learnt back then that it's okay to punish wife lightly ( you can hit a woman as long as it's for the right purpose and did not leave any signs), by my female Islamic Education teacher at that. I guess that's the majority opinion believed by fellow Muslims all around me. Traditions?
But it's nice to hear another opinion which perhaps is closer to the religion. I remember the first time I was invited by a friend to attend this Islamic Marriage seminar in Auckland and these two speakers, an Imam and a Muslim marriage counselor talked about not physically beating wife at all ( another meaning to doroba) it caused such a furor. A few men stood and openly clashed with these two - " I don't wish harm for her. I just want to threaten her a bit to obey me" and the imam said " but that's emotional abuse". Then another man accused these two speakers of manipulating quranic verses to appease non-Muslims. A few women spoke out and hit back at these two men. Great drama.
It would take a systematic approach for Muslims to teach their fellow men to not take this verse literally and make it as license to subdue their women with physical or emotional abuse or manipulation. Especially if it's still mentioned in the official Islamic Education curriculum in a country.
