well good morning guys another fine day at the muffin cabin i like that term that's my muffin cabin this is my first overnight we're gonna give this thing a it's old we'll try out we've got pretty much everything wrapped up on the outside you can kind of see we've got our stuff see seems to be relatively airtight i've got a little bit more to do up around there as you can see there's snow piling up on the roof which is kind of it's kind of cool and kind of not cool because i don't really have any lighting proper lighting setup in there so that's a second on the agenda primary objective right now is to get a source of heating so i got the stove in place but i haven't actually hooked it up yet i gotta put the chimney in as you can see it's it's dark with snow on here let me let me come on off oh it's not going to come off let's see if i can get some of this snowball there snow kind of goes off [Music] maybe you need a snow stick from the outside as you can see it gets significantly brighter in here once you get your snow off find a solution for our lighting situation with as opposed to having just a bulb that's there to bat scandia scania 150. let me hook that thing up i've got a little bit of a frankenstein chimney i thought out i've got uh some double wall stainless which is going to get me through the wall and then i have some of the stainless steel pipe that i used for our reclaimed from a oil furnace that i want to install hopefully we get this thing set up because i hear it's gonna get cold [Music] [Applause] [Music] in hindsight that probably wasn't a great idea because the back of the uh cabin is stuffed with pine needles but as it appears i did not light it on fire so it didn't uh didn't cook at all so you can see our our insulation is there i guess the little bit of mud and moisture didn't hurt anything so the plan here is to actually put the insulated pipe through this this wall to kind of protect my combustibles which is my wood angle grinder makita angle grinder works really really well let's cut the wood out and see how far we get [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh isn't this a glorious hole sure is big as long as you can hit the edges let's see if my pipe will fit in this oh yeah get in there come on there we go well as you guys can see this is a giant pipe for such a small stove and uh that's just kind of how i roll it's not really about the size of your stove it's it's about it's about how big your pipe is this should create ample amount of draft this is probably a pipe for a much larger fireplace so what i'm going to do once it's on the outside is i'm actually going to dampen it down a little bit little river reducer because i don't want as much draft as this chimney is going to give us and this is not exactly a standard installation of a stove if you're ever doing a stove i highly recommend following the manufacturer's recommendation on stovepipes you know chimney clearances stove clearances sort of stuff like that that's kind of stuff you don't really want to mess around with yeah that's just my public service announcement this is what i do this is not necessarily how you do it you can see the oval shape here have to make the round pipe oval in order to sit on the thing but that's pretty tight but i forgot to put the heat shield on so [Music] well that's pretty cool the sun's come out to play it's got low enough on the horizon that's actually shining inside the cabin it's crazy bright in here i just can't really you can see it's like look at that don't need no lighting in here that's cool that's the one thing that's well one of the reasons why i like that tarp so much is it amplifies any light that hits it got my fireplace installed i got three screws around the collar there to ensure that my chimney doesn't fall off because that would be bad and then i've got it inserted in a double wall stainless steel pipe that allows for minimal clearances around combustibles and then i got it through the uh building and then i've rigged up a series of t-bar stakes in order to hold it together and that i have this guy here which is a this is a stainless steel chimney liner it's not like your dryer vent the really flimsy stuff it's actually very rigid then it goes up to that and then what you can do is actually you can uh you can bend it depending on the primary rim the primary wind comes from this direction that way so uh anyways i'm pretty pretty sure it's not gonna be blowing this direction towards the cabin it does go beyond the peak just a little bit and uh yeah i think that's adequate it's kind of a bit like uh like a northern ontario ice shack i think it's pretty good i'm gonna get it fired up see if it actually draws go give that guy a whirl make sure it works because that's the last thing you want to be doing is freezing because your fireplace doesn't draft i'm always curious when i get a new fireplace to see how it works and this one is no different other than it is a antique we're gonna try it out so [Music] i'm always so impressed on how well this old stuff works this stove lights like like a dream and and everything everything works on it really well like this little damper thing here you can turn it to have more oxygen create more heat but when you turn it down it turns it like other than it really stinks i don't know where it was i think i got it from an old shop and so whatever whatever was landing on it for you know tens of years that it was sitting there in storage it's kind of burning off right now and it kind of doesn't smell very pretty so i got the door open but it is she is she's getting hot i do have my safety precaution in mine i got my carbon monoxide smoke detector sitting over here so i got a special place for wood stoves i love wood stoves come in hello hi i brought coffee and ginger snaps oh yeah you guys gotta quit um for a little bit i don't know if you fit frankie comes in she's fine you guys don't know who this is this is rachel this is my wife hello she you bring me bring me cookies are you are you gonna stay overnight um probably not what are you probably not is that is that a maybe no that means no that means no you're not gonna it's warm in here it is warm we have to find someone to watch the child that's right yeah i think that's not not a cabin for free i almost got it done got the chimney all sorted on camera it looks like it has a smell it it's a bit more rustic than i'm used to oh you don't like this it looks okay you know like the uh the rustic it's like we're in an above ground pool but we're not in the water this isn't above ground pool i don't know if you you're keeping track she doesn't listen to me when i talk you talk a lot that's right you have a lot of ideas a lot of ideas you hear that all right well we're gonna we're gonna enjoy our coffee together you guys can say hello to rachel hi rachel in the comments she reads the comments she she's the she's not the moderator but she's always watching the comments making sure everyone's being nice that's right make sure everybody's playing nice being nice you can say hello to her in the comments she does read them so anyways we're gonna i'm gonna enjoy my coffee while uh well it's still hot and uh a very good gingerbread frankie's going to steal my cookie if i put it down i'm going to set this thing up like a palace it doesn't look like much right now but it's going to get better i just got to add some i'm thinking of tv oh tv make a tv right there there's a big wall right there who wants a tv what else are you going to do by yourself overnight in a shack in the woods took your mittens off i took them inside that's the official it means it's warm in here yes oh it's just started so we're going to see how hot we can get this and we got frankie we got bean bean is the shih tzu poodle and frankie is the bouvier poodle and the reason why they're both kind of mixed with poodles with anti-shedding dogs non-shedding dogs is because we're allergic to dog hair and it's a pain to clean up and around the house so that's why we got we got frank and beans frankie is not that old she is uh old frankie's two just turned two bean is 12 or 13. [Applause] well guys it's time to introduce you to the newest eco flow battery this is the ecoflow delta pro now what's special about this battery is it's one of the biggest ones they make it's also sort of near the territory of where you can replace all your home power needs this thing packs a huge punch it's got 3 600 watt hours of power 3.6 kilowatt hours of power it can be recharged from your power from your house in 1.8 hours that is incredible speeds for a power pack of this size what's also cool about this thing is it's scalable you can add multiple packs you can go all the way up to 25 kilowatt hours of power that can power your whole house for a week just to give you an idea all right let's take a look at the business end of this guy this guy's got four puresign ac ports it's also got a rv adapter which is really cool you can plug your rv in there it's got usb c two ports there and it's got four usb a fast charging ports it also has a really cool display and it's got a handle you push this button in and you pull it out like that and you can use it like a dolly so you don't have to carry this thing around it also has two handles up top so if you need to carry it you can't you just get it close to your body you pick it up and it's got two cooling fans that keep the inverter cool when it's got high drain devices attached on the back here we've got two battery ports for extra batteries battery port one battery port two this has got the ac adapter so you can charge it with your line voltage at home it's got fast charge slow charge we also have our solar panel hookup and a fuse reset and on this side of the pack we have the dc hookups so we have eight millimeter ports we have a cigarette lighter adapter or the car adapter ports and we have some just uh if you want to push in some dc power ports that's kind of cool using its puresign inverter it can deliver up to 3 600 watts of power and up to 4 500 watts of power using an xboos technology that means you can power 99.99 of all devices you can either hook it up to your solar panels up to 1 600 watts of charging ability and if you're in your camper or your mobile home or if you've got it in the trunk of your car you can charge this thing at the electrical vehicle charging station super fast you can add more than one pack so you start off with one pack at 3.6 kilowatt hours that's pretty good for regular use you can power your refrigerators uh your freezers um your curling irons your hair straighteners those important things you know the emergency use sort of things you know hot plate toaster oven sort of stuff but then you can scale it up even further by adding a secondary pack so you can have 7.2 kilowatt hours that's with two packs but you can go three four five even six packs you can go up to 25 kilowatt hours of power that's pretty much replacing the entire power consumption of your entire house in an emergency situation you can pull it out of your closet and you have access to reliable power say for instance you need to make coffee or you need to run your cpap machine this is sort of the device that you can have in case of an emergency and a huge thank you for eco flow delta for sponsoring this video if you guys are looking to get yourself a pack you can check out the link in the description below do you ever think to yourself maybe i shouldn't or maybe i should or maybe i should just because i can or i should try just because i want to anyways here's the story here's the story of of me and my you know construction life i tend to do a lot of renovation for people that are upgrading either their house and they decide that they don't want a lot of stuff in their house either they're you know they're changing maybe the furniture or the walls or they're taking down walls or they're upgrading their floors or anyways so they decide that they don't want their technology anymore and they usually say kevin do you want this and i'm not the person that says no so i have a series of collection of tvs and they're all they're all about this size people tend to want to go bigger better and uh i pick up the slack so this is a sony bravia tv that i had laying around it was actually uh i think the store and it was collecting dust see collecting dust under my stairs and um i figured why not bring it out here in a former life i used to be a computer technician and that was like early 2000s it was a much more complicated system when you kind of had to deal with you know dial up you know tcp ip connected to the internet with like windsock and all that sort of jazz i'm sure there's some guys watching there be like yeah i remember that and using like you know fidonet i go all the way back to the bbs days where you know you were dialing up with 9600 baud 144 33 6. i'm going off on a tangent i used to do this a lot i don't do it as much anymore but i really wanted to try it so what i've done is i've actually brought the tv out here i've got a roku box again was just collecting dust and i set it up and what i've done is actually use my uh my motorola phone instead of a hotspot i have a lot of data on my phone being a youtuber and all so i've set up a wi-fi wireless hotspot and i connected my roku box to it and then turned connected my tv to it so that allows me to get that allows me to get let's see what is it i haven't been i haven't even gone to the home button yet i've connected it it says i'm connected it's slow come on it said it was connected i really wanted it to work i brought a dvd player just in case you know backups backups and backups so as it turned out you need to do it a couple times the same way over and over and over again and all of a sudden it works that's just the way computers work i got uh oh i got the best funny cat videos and dog videos this is the default this is why so many people like cat videos oh yeah there goes the catfish all right anyways it's really loud okay well we got that working that'll be late night uh entertainment hurry up turn the cat video off i gotta do some other stuff i'm not ready for tv quite just yet but it's pretty cool that i got it working this is why cat videos are so distracting why does he got a mcdonald's thing on his head oh oh it's a funny dog okay distracting okay i can do some more stuff because that's it's way too early for that well i got a couple more things i want to do before i hunker down for the night and uh well one of the things is that uh anytime it kind of gets really windy and it has been very windy lasted a while to kind of survey the area to see if anything's fallen and trails are obstructed or if there's like you know a tree on a building or something like that so i kind of also want to check the pond to see how it's doing because uh it's been sub-zero for a little while oh looks like there's a tree down well there's a tree down i don't know how much of a tree there it is right there you can see it broke off that's a fair-sized branch it is there you can see the top it's gone didn't hit anything it looked like it landed in this tree a little bit those are the sticks there i'm talking about that's how thick the ice is it's about two inches but there's this there's about two inches of solid or probably an inch of solid ice and then the rest is just kind of melted snow which isn't not good ice well i think i got most of the sticks off any luck that will melt slightly again before it freezes solid for the winter because what i wanted it to do is to have a nice you know even surface to skate on not that that crummy ice that's on top if you can see the top layer it's because there's been a lot of snow and then it kind of turned to slush and then it froze in that's not ideal skating once the sticks are out of there and then everything can kind of melt freeze we'll have an olympic arena [Music] i mentioned it's hilly over here it's always up it's up both ways got my bad secret weapon this time every time i've slept overnight in a cabin i've built i've woken up freezing so i found a solution i got the old heating blanket and my plan is to make myself a little bit of a sleeping burrito so i've got my thermal protection on the bottom i've got uh my heating blanket in the middle which i'm gonna be i'm gonna be the ingredients i'm going inside the burrito i got and then i got a top layer as well so i just got to hook this hook this thing up spaghetti factory you can dial this guy all the way up to nine well probably like 11 10 hours i could sleep for 10 hours all right so that's my secret weapon top layer double top layer there bed's all made up i think i think i'm going to wake up in the morning warm well it's about dinner time it's gotten dark isn't it great in the winter time when it gets dark around five o'clock might as well start making my dinner i've got uh some flatbread pizza planned i've got uh well i'm gonna put in my little toaster oven here and start i'm gonna preheat pretty heat to 350 350 put it on bake all right so that's going to preheat pre-heat my toaster oven and i'm going to put my pizza together it's uh i make it with all leftovers so we got some chicken we got some bacon we got some sweet baby rays for sauce and uh some a little bit of onion for flavor got some cheese mozzarella and then yeah you pop it in the oven mmm delicious so that's the uh that's the current plan on the menu i just got to warm that guy up so not burn my coat all right well i got my pizza in the oven at 350 for about 10-15 minutes and i've got my tv set up and i've got it hot spotted to my phone and i've got youtube planned so i could you know while i'm waiting for my pizza to cook i might as well catch up on my one of my favorite youtubers we got zach fowler we got fouler of makery and mischief he's got a new episode out about two days ago adventure come on there you go you ready i'm going out on the ice what do you think of the ice come here butter there he goes hold still look at that we got we've got zach on the tv divorce all right so we're gonna wait i'm gonna watch this and well you guys uh too loud turn it out all right so i'm gonna catch up on that we'll get back in another 10 minutes when my pizza is done this is pretty cool all of the creature comforts of home in a cabin [Music] mmm pizza that's garlic naan bread with parmesan in there with mozzarella there's a little bit of white onions we couldn't find any green onions we got little pieces of bacon little pieces of chicken and we got sweet baby rays underneath it which makes a really nice flatbread pizza i forgot to bring a plate i'm using the cardboard that the naan bread came with it's lava lava lava pizza something about eating the bush eating remotely that just makes everything taste better maybe it's the fresh air all day or it's the fact that you have to struggle with it to try to make it cook everything tastes better when you have to try you know let's just hand it to you it doesn't taste this good i don't know why well there you go there's my non-bread pizza a staple of mine we eat it probably once a week well i was almost too much pizza to eat it was almost bigger than my head i'm almost done we're getting the pizza sweats how's that for a fireside chat i'm like almost sitting in the fire i got my little flashlight here scary flashlight this is an old light seeker three if you guys are curious about a really good flashlight i've had them for i've had them for years and uh i highly recommend them they're pretty cool i like the uh there's a magnetic clip on the on the end so you can uh you just kind of get it close and it just kind of snaps on and charges it usb that's pretty cool i know that cabin turned out really cool i really like the way it functions i like the shape of it i like that it appears like when you take a when you're inside it just feels big it's almost like sitting at a round table you're sitting in a round room it just feels bigger even even on camera it shows it shows bigger because it just got like got no corners so it really turned out really turned out well i'm very pleased with it the way the way it turned out i'm not even trying to do these puns it's around building it turned out nice these are the kind of structures they're kind of i've always kind of wanted to build round things i've always kind of kind of pushed the envelopes even in my professional career building round things i like to make curvy stuff anything i can make complicated i do i guess in the in the cube build you can kind of see the the decorative round sort of ceiling that sort of stuff that's the sort of stuff i've specialized in making round stuff making it extra complicated but still staying aesthetically pleasing this guy this particular cabin's been on my kind of to-do list for a while i've kind of wanted to do it i actually i scavenged the satellite dish because i got two this is the this is the the second one i got the first one i got was from my childhood home my parents were moving and i said i wanted the satellite dish so i actually took it like eight years ago now and i've been moving it uh i i haven't specifically found a reason why to use that maybe you guys have an idea i was thinking of actually a hot tub cover of some sort kind of like a pergola a pergola a pergola so i got some big plans coming up i'm thinking of another tarp cabin because i have the remnants of those the bubble building material and i was thinking more of an a-frame tarp cabin sort of thing more bushcrafty style again in the pines because i've got to clear out the pines i've got to take all the dead trees down i've got to uh i've got to do something with them so i might as well you know sequester them in a really functional building because winter is long very long you kind of want to get outside and do something so i get quite a few comments and and they always ask you know why are you doing this kevin why why are you out here building stuff and to answer that question is is why not build stuff like i see a lot of people i don't know they're playing video games there's nothing wrong with playing video games and you know that sort of stuff read books i'm more of a guy that kind of likes to do something i like to you know find myself a problem and fix it so you know i get an idea in my head and i think how can i build that so i i work through the process of building something because i that's what i enjoy doing so that's what i'm going to continue to do and this is primarily the reason why i bought this property is because i wanted i wanted something to do i found that you know it was doing the mundane day-to-day stuff for other people you don't feed that creative i don't know the creative desire that's there so i'm just going to continue doing that as long as i can um because there's lots of time to sit there's going to be like there's going to be a period of time when you know when you sit around and eat toast sort of thing now this topic probably could be its own entire video but i'll touch on it just a little bit just to give people some clarification on uh on dawn so don is a good friend of mine he uh we actually met because i did a job for don way back when he actually uh when chris and i used to work together uh we had an ad and a classifieds and don actually hired us both to uh do some work at his house and uh so that's what we did we we chris and i went over to don's house and we we fixed something and then fast forward a couple years later he had something else that he needed done and uh i wasn't working with my brother anymore i was working pretty much alone and he said you know can you come and do this and i i had time so i went out and helped him he says you know what i've been laid off um i can give you a hand and i went well i don't usually you know do that sort of thing like have homeowners kind of help in the process but don don was uh off work so he says you know can i give you a hand and he was fabulous like he he kind of he has i guess the forethought to kind of you know be aware of what's needed next and i've never seen that before so so fast four we we did dawn's house we did we actually fixed it top to bottom sort of thing and uh pretty much ever since i've been working with don i said like like dawn continued to be laid off and i continued to say hey don you want to come want to come help me with this project that project sort of thing and he's always been available he's very punctual um he shows up on time which is is you know it's a great quality you don't see that a lot anymore you see a lot of people that say you know i can you know i can help you out and then for whatever reason they bail on you or you know life happens sort of thing but uh dawn's always the guy that he's there you know he's he's exactly what you guys talk about in the comments and you know what you see on camera is how dawn is he great he's a great worker he's a great fan friend and uh you know i can't thank him enough so i don't know if i don't know if he watches the video so he might not even see this i know i know he's uh he's a man of few words but uh off camera he does talk i i do i assure you of that he does he does chat off camera he's a little he's a little camera shy but that's okay so uh but he does he does enjoy what he does he does get he does get rewarded and uh anything that is mine is his he's welcome to use any of any of the tools and uh anytime somebody sends me something i always encourage them to send send me a send me something for dawn because i will i'll pass it along you know gratefully pass along and uh yeah it's good it's hard to find friends like that and uh you know i appreciate them a lot all right guys well it's getting late i might as well uh you know get my get myself situated got the i was gonna bring shoes i didn't think this this floor isn't exactly uh you know sock worthy needs in like an area rock it's bush it's bush worthy so i got another pair of pants underneath here as soon as winter comes i ended up just keep adding pairs of pants until spring so it's about two pair of pant day and uh two two shirt day so it's the old get the pajama pants underneath your regular pants so i got my heating blanket all fired up i've got it on five hopefully that doesn't cook me and uh i've got uh got the multi-layered blankets i should be warm i've got the fire stoked i anticipated going like this high and then down low and that's when the heating blanket will kick in and kind of keep me the rest of the way watch the lights no it didn't work i need the clapper or switch i gotta go over there turn it off i got a flashlight all right well you guys goodnight see you in the morning well good morning guys it's not cold it's not cold in here at all well that's a little chilly a little bit of fire left like that uh i think that really worked really well what's crazily surprising is that reflective light off the ceiling it's just it makes it so bright in here it doesn't matter what time of day it is um [Laughter] it went relatively well like i think this is this is one of the i think i'm getting better at sleeping off-grid it's kind of like i've i've taken all of civilization and brought it with me i have uh i wouldn't even consider i wouldn't even get through this off-grid i brought my own grid uh with the eco flow plot pro it uh it powered everything it powered the tv it powered this the blanket the the cooking you know the warming up of the coffee of the tv like like phone charging lights again it's it's it's almost like cheating it is very much like cheating because you know you're not relying on anybody right it's just you're kind of you know you got it and and away you go so ultimately the shack is designed part and parcel for a place to relax while you know tending to the forest that's going on so the the idea behind the the pine forest is that it needs to be reclaimed it needs to be thinned out it needs to be pruned it needs to be managed so back in the day in order for forest to manage what would happen is lightning would strike it and it would burn to the ground and well that's not acceptable anymore you have to manage it so that's that's ultimately the plan with this cabin is that when you're out here in the winter because it's primarily when i do this it's just too hot in the summertime to be messing around with chainsaws if i'm going to be wearing it if i'm going to be using a chainsaw i'm going to be wearing a sweater at the very least so that's the plan so in the wintertime i like you know when it's bitter cold some place to kind of go warm up hang i think this round building really lends itself to that sort of cause this is a nice place to sit you can fit many people here and if you want to stay overnight that's entirely possible because it's got heating and it's it's it worked really well i'm very pleased with it um yeah i don't know my parting words is it worked really well and i hope you guys enjoyed me on this one and uh join me in the next one
