following the success of the ls7 teardown video i've decided to do another video i have a 6.1 liter srt8 hemi engine here this is completely locked up and i've only done a few of these so please bear with me as i tear it down i'm not like it's not like ls is where i've done a few hundred i've only done a couple of these there's probably only a couple things that could cause this um it's probably an oiling issue or a lack of oil in the engine that's been my experience it's probably got some bearing damage it could have a drop valve seat i mean it is a chrysler that possibility always exists anyway we're going to go ahead and tear this thing down and see what we find but at least still has valtrain in it all right let's get the valve train knocked out of it so else you usually don't see any damage yet let's see if we got any vent push rods that all looks okay so nothing awry yet usually when they drop a valve seat you can tell from up here let's get the other side apart valve cover's also broken valtryen out this side that was a cool trick i got you this time i thought i did so again i don't see any other issues any issues at all so uh let's go ahead and pull the head off and see what we can find inside moment of truth oh it's leaking on me no dropped valve seats she looks pretty decent it's pretty awesome looks like uh it's a bunch of carbon this is kind of normal let's get this gasket off of here all right let's get to the other side no so nothing really alarming there's a little bit of a little rust in there but the head looks okay uh no drop valve seats that's amazing maybe this head was built on a wednesday so it has been my experience that with a few of these that i have pulled apart you don't really start seeing any damage if it's an oiling issue until you start taking the short block apart the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to pull the lifters and trays out usually you'll see some damage right away if it is an oiling issue i've seen cams damaged i've pretty much seen uh several things blown up on these engines but this one being locked solid there's really no telling as to what's wrong with it then we're going to get the front cover off flip it on its tail and start popping some rod caps off and see what those bearings look like okay that one looks all right that one's a little scored but it rolls just fine there's a little bit of scoring on that one that looks okay that looks okay no don't go back a little bit of scoring again nothing really standing out but yep that one looks okay let's go to the other side huh those all look pretty all right a little bit of scoring just like just like the other side hopefully that means that we get a good game out of it that would be nice yep nothing telling yet so now that the valve train and heads are out we're gonna see if we can turn it over i really don't think this is going to work but oh no it's still very locked up so let's get this pulley and front cover off and then we'll flip it on it's on a sail so all right let's get this front cover off looks like all of the other bolts are out okay the chain isn't in too bad of shape nothing's blown apart let's get the oil pump and the cam gear off okay so let's uh put this back in here and see if we can turn that cam over all right let's try turn that cam over now ah the cam turns over nice might actually have a good game out of this well let's find out let's try to get that cam out nothing torn up so far [Music] all right i see a little little bit of scoring on that lobe there but nothing nothing really terrible so i think it's safe to say that this engine's not going to turn over just because this is no longer in it look at that it's got a comp cam in it it'd be interesting to see what this cam is but it's an aftermarket cam so that's kind of cool that's a bonus i don't usually see aftermarket cams in these so after struggling to get this up on his tail uh i was able to look it over a little bit there's no obvious signs of anything wrong unless i don't see anything bent but that doesn't mean nothing is bent anyway we're going to start down here with number eight rod cap and work our way to what i can get off until i can get it to turn over um okay well i have already found the problem um that is a big hunk of the bearing so this one spun and destroyed the crank that kind of sucks as you can see that looks absolutely terrible um i can move that rod at least but that crank is going to be done that is trash yeah that rod rod is done anybody wants some i can't even get this off yet wow that sounds great doesn't it totally spun these bearings trying to get this out one piece so i can keep it a souvenir let's see if we can uh turn this engine over now now that we've gotten oh look at that all right let's get that other cap off ah yeah right that one doesn't look too bad oh there's one of the bad ones finally fell off yeah that's that's no good anymore this one doesn't really kind of come off at all yeah look at that it's trash turns out you need to keep oiling these things if you're going to drive them especially if you're going to drive them hard and i can't imagine anybody driving one of these that hard right these are just put around car put around town cars and that rod might be all right now i don't really expect any more surprises but in this line of work you just uh you try not to have any expectations at all just just none so let's uh see what else i can find get this apart and uh hopefully there's no other surprises uh [Music] [Music] so so okay here's the results of this tear down some totally trash rod bearings a totally trashed crankshaft i mean i guess you could probably turn it put oversized bearings in it but uh these cranks are only about 400 bucks 500 bucks on a good day so i don't think anybody's going to want to go through that expense of course that rod is spent but the block is good all of the mains look good the bores are clean there's no damage nothing was bent or blown up so that's a good day and i've got some sellable rods and pistons uh some cylinder heads that somehow haven't dropped the valve seat yet i got a sweet comp cam that i need to look up the specs but uh overall not bad these are pretty easy to tear down just like ls is anything push rod is pretty easy so i'm pretty happy with that uh of course the crank being trash well that part sucks but you know it's a core for a reason and i knew it wasn't going to be something simple as to why it wouldn't turn over but i got a lot of good parts to sell the cam was a bonus and i had a lot of fun taking it apart these are really easy most push rod engines are if you enjoyed the video don't forget to subscribe i'm probably going to be tearing down more probably a viper engine next you don't want to miss that talk to you guys later
