today we're going to take apart a 2-liter four-cylinder k20 z3 out of a 2006 to 2011 honda civic si now this particular engine we did here run most of these engines that come in as cores i have absolutely no backstory on it but this one has about 160 000 miles on it uh the car was a run and drive through co-part with a clean title unfortunately copart's version of run and drive and something that you can actually get in and drive are pretty far off from each other so uh this is a bad engine i i had it had low oil pressure or no oil pressure it sounded terrible when you went to try to start it it did run kinda it did run but it is most definitely not a usable engine so today we're going to take it all apart see what we can salvage from it um i don't have a lot of high hopes it's just i don't have a lot of luck with k20s but we're going to tear this one apart and see what we find and before anybody says anything yes i'm using an engine stand i do not like using engine stands for core engines but on small engines that require something stable to hold them i need to use an engine stand to break things loose like head bolts and main cap bolts otherwise engine stands just get in the way it's an extra step for me to take uh the head of one and mount it to the bell housing of an engine just to rip it apart it also obscures rear covers like the rear main seal covers on ls's and other engines generally they're just it's just an extra step i don't need to do i go through enough engines every year that i'm pretty well versed in handling these things without risk of injuring myself as you can see we've got most of the outside parts stripped off of this there's no manifolds or accessories this car has actually been torn down and is long gone it's been months since that car was dismantled however since i was not the one that dismantled it i didn't catch a few things on this engine this is actually the first time looking at it and when i was uh getting the stand getting it on the stand i noticed a couple things well first off i think that crack would explain the low oil pressure which that's not good there goes a pan can't sell that but um let's see yeah there's an exit wound right there that's pretty bad so uh we're gonna find out what that's about but uh that makes me pretty sad right there one more thing i noticed uh this engine has a heat tab on it which only salvage yards and other shops will would install so that means that this engine is not original to the car and i also checked the vin number on this engine to the car so yeah that car's been through some engines i've gone ahead and pulled the coil cover and the coils out of it so the first thing we're going to do is pull the spark plugs out and see if we can find any signs of mayhem inside which i'm expecting at this point with that block the way it is well the plugs look pretty decent albeit these are absolutely not the right plugs for do not use auto light plugs in a honda i don't understand why you would but this is the plug from what i suspect is the cylinder with damage and there's no evidence of any issues in the combustion chamber at least so maybe we might get lucky we might get a good head out of this well let's go ahead and get the valve cover off of it sure it's drained wow it's actually pretty clean in there everything looks pretty decent so this engine looks really nice inside it's really clean there's not a lot of oil varnish i don't see any major wear on the cams there's no signs of moisture inside it's pretty nice i i mean this this is about what they should look like if they're taken care of but i i have a feeling that we won't be singing that song after i get this head off one thing i like to do on honda engines especially on engines that i can't hear run but i might think are good i like to pull the vtec solenoid off the cylinder head and check the screen for bearing material a lot of times uh when bearings start coming apart the screen in the vtec sonic is a very good indicator that there is actually damage in there so we're gonna take a couple pens out and we're gonna check that screen as bolts go flying so that's not a good sign this is one of those cases where i wish i wasn't right but as you can see at the bottom of the screen here there's a bunch of bearing material not a good sign not a good side ladies and gentlemen let's get this head off and see what we can find before we go ahead and pull the head or get started on that we're going to get this crank pulley loose it's something to note hondas are about 50 50. half the time this bolt comes out with no trouble the other half the time you need the biggest impact that they've ever made to get that bolt out or i've had friends that have built a tool or i know you can buy a tool that fits in here to hold the crank still so you can get some leverage on this bolt but i'm pretty sure this one will come out because there's tool marks on it so that's also not a good sign so this is essentially just a ring of tens this is the inspection plate and on an engine that didn't have obvious signs of damage i would be taking these three tens out and checking the tension on the timing chain but uh there is no saving this engine it's strictly parts so first we're gonna knock the solenoid out of here and then there's just a whole bunch of tens and we'll peel this [Music] off so this part looks good no issues with the chain the tensioner and guides that all looks pretty decent uh this tensioners the chain tensioner is not sticking so far out like the chain is stretched that's usually a k24 thing not so much a k20 but as you can see the oil pump chain is off its sprocket it's all chewed up down here it feels like it's not attached to anything down here and then there's a crack right here at the back of the block so all things considered this is not looking too hot i'm gonna go ahead and pull the accessory bracket off with the water pump and see if there's any damage behind this sometimes you'll find more issues that you didn't see before only if it's really bad [Music] uh yeah i'd consider this pretty bad um we're gonna be lucky if we get ahead out of this as you can see daylight well shop light see the block not supposed to be able to do that a little extra crankcase ventilation i'm going to go ahead and pull this chain off all the guides and tensioner so we're going to start by pulling the cam caps and then we'll secure all the rocker arms and pull this assembly off as one unit so we're just going to start cracking these things loose here foreign so the cams look pretty decent there's no major score marks in the journals which tells me if it was run low on oil it wasn't for very long now before we pull all this rocker assembly off we're going to use some rubber bands and kind of keep the rockers and followers together that's going to keep everything from shooting out in every direction and it will also save me tons of time and frustration putting this back together when i'm done all right let's remove the rocker assembly i'm just gonna gently work this one up the idea is to take your time all right time to time to break the head bolts loose let's get some head bolts loose this is why i hate engine stands all right let's get the head bolts out [Music] moment of truth let's see how bad it is see if i can do this without getting leaked on here so that's not a good sign that's not a good sign at all this piston is not yeah it's not connected anymore there's this one unlike the last one it has four pistons it's just i don't think it's got a rod anymore and so unlike the last engine it broke down this engine has all of its pistons but i think the orientation of that one is um somehow it's supposed to be bad news again we got a couple bent a couple bent valves here um i think the head is salvageable unlike the last engine we took apart that head was junk but this one um a couple valves and valve job and i think this one will be back in biz so i really don't think anything good can come of this but let's keep digging so already sounds bad oh this is terrible holy crap wow um that was uh how did this run well the pickup isn't all full of trash or anything so it just tells me that it was likely run without oil maybe yeah like there goes the oil pump chain see just do any tools to take this off i guess so i still got to do it the right way oh look there's a part of a rod there's there's so much junk in here this is like rod soup the rod is still bolted to the crank all right let's get what's left of this oil pump off of here and let's keep digging because what else could be wrong huh what else so watch when i hit the trigger on this this bolt is actually bent there was so much force pushing the oil pump away from the crankshaft that it bent this bolt i have never seen that that is i'll show that at the end of the video that's impressive oh that one's even worse i feel like i'm oh man oh it turns out i don't need to take all the bolts out wow that is just that's just trash it's annihilated i didn't think it was gonna be this bad i mean i've torn down some cores but apparently you can still amaze me so this is one of the worst i've seen i mean it is just carnage i've never seen an oil pump blown into so many pieces i would have liked really like to be in the passenger seat when this happened i don't think anything survived i think it's it's all going to be trash but let's see what we can salvage see if there's anything worth hanging on to here so here is where the rod broke this could have been over rev too i mean it's hard to say what failed uh when everything looks like a bomb went off it's hard to say what came first the chicken or the egg but [Music] so that's all block material the piston is actually not too bad i mean obviously it's trashed but the piston didn't come apart still feels pretty good this is probably an over revving situation or maybe it's sucked in water it did have a cold air intake on it does have a couple marks in the piston for the valves comes another rain of parts probably well maybe not maybe they all fell out already that actually doesn't look too bad we're gonna throw this uh crank in the parts wash and see what it looks like but we may be able to salvage this i don't see any major marks on this actually i lied it's pretty banged up we'll see so this is pretty much worst case scenario here um seems i've been running into this quite a lot lately but at least i didn't pay for this core engine that uh came from a car which i don't know if that actually makes it better that might be worse i think that's worse this is i'm banked on being able to sell some engine parts i'll be able to sell stuff like the oil cooler and maybe i can get the head fixed but yeah not so hot another thing i noted these two rods relatively straight and not so much on this one so it wasn't just one cylinder i mean it could have been um yeah i really don't know uh it could have been water a car did have cold air intake on it but it wasn't one of those where the air filter is on the ground but i just have this mess of broken stuff i mean yeah i'll be able to sell like the cams and valve train if i can't salvage the head and well thanks for tagging along with me on my train of disappointment sometimes that's just how the cookie crumbles i mean that really wasn't so good for me but hopefully you enjoyed the video it was kind of fun to take apart don't forget to subscribe i've got more tear-down videos coming soon i think the next one is going to be on a 6.2 liter gen 5 gm v8 which is like a 14 or 15 up escalade it's a 6.2 liter l86 a bunch of jargon if you don't know what i'm talking about i do have some other videos coming out soon that are absolutely unrelated to tear downs but anyway i hope you enjoy those as well and uh until next time see you guys later
