what are tenses okay tenses in English tell us about the time of an action so there's an action there's work being done at a certain time is the action being done now was it done earlier has it already been completed is it yet to start this is what tense will tell us basically tense is equal to time now time has three broad categories past present and Future Past which is already finished so yesterday two days ago last month these time periods are in the past second category is present the present is now today this moment this year this month the present and the third time period is the future which is yet to begin tomorrow next month next week next year Etc now I'm reminded of a line by Master oogue in Kung Fu Panda yesterday is history tomorrow is a mystery today is a gift that's why they call it the present it's a gift okay now these were the three time categories now there are four types of actions the first is simple now simple action means kind of universal indefinite for example I dance he runs there's like a universal statement about the activity we're not talking about whether it's over or not whether I'm dancing right now or not or I've finished dancing no it's just a simple statement of fact I dance I'm a dad answer okay well I'm not really a dancer but I wish I was about 85 percent of spoken English actually uses this simple or indefinite tense in fact when you read newspapers or books chances are you're going to read a lot of simple present tense now we're going to talk about this in detail right now I'm just giving you an overview of the different types of time and the different types of action the second type of action is continuous or Progressive means it's happening right now the action is going on it is a continuous process I'm teaching you tenses you are learning English grammar these are long-term actions they're going to take time to get over the process is continuing and the third type of action is perfect perfect means that's complete it's perfect it's done it's wrapped up so the rule of thumb with perfect tenses is that this type of action started in the past and it's going to get over at some point I have done my homework means I've completed all my homework and it's perfect well at least in my opinion and the fourth type of action which is actually used very rarely is perfect continuous now remember that continuous meant a process reading speaking walking and perfect meant to be complete to have read to have walked so what does perfect continuous really mean well this means there is a process let's say study or say you're preparing for this tenses marathon and then some continuing action of the past is probably going to get over at some point either now or in the future this tense is used very rarely so quick recap here's the table there are three types of time period past present and future there are four types of work or actions which is simple or which is indefinite second continuous third perfect and fourth perfect continuous now the combination of these is going to give us 12 types of tenses in addition to this there are also some conditional tenses and I'm going to cover that later in an exclusive class so before we move on to these 12 tenses I want to give a shout out to yakshata riyaz for leaving this amazing message under my last video and if you want a shout out to the next one you know what to do leave me a comment below with the hashtag chat Chatters now let's dive right into the four present tenses tense number one present simple tense about seventy percent of all spoken English is present tense and present simple is probably around 57 so more than half of all the words we speak are in present simple tense example I drink tea they ride horses we go to the gym tonight drinks three cups of coffee every day that's quite a lot of coffee isn't it now the structure is subject plus base form of verb exception now notice I drink butane drinks how much coffee does tane drink so here is the first exception I you we they work play it do run he she it third person singular Works Place eats does runs notice that we add an extra s or an es to the verb for example he climbs she speaks the ball bounces now I also have an exclusive video on do dozen did and I'm gonna drop a link below but in general are you we they do and he she it third person singular does but this exception also has an exception and I want you to listen to this very carefully so there's a main verb now when the main verb is preceded by an auxiliary verb or a helping verb example do can must the main verb always remains in its original form it's like the master has a helper the helper does all the work so the master can relax okay example she walks but she can walk he reads but he must read or he does read okay so simple present tense rules rule number one simple present tense or the indefinite present tense is used for kind of General statements habits and facts example the sun rises in the East water boils at 100 degrees Celsius notice the sun and the water were eat so we said boils and Rises I am a teacher he is a magician I love chocolate with orange flavor yummy I actually particularly like the orange flavor in chocolates what about you now why are these called indefinite because there's no tangible time frame to them he is a magician he was probably a magician he might remain one in the future also but we don't know for sure it's just a general statement of fact and did you notice that I said I am and he is it's time for another exception the exception is that the helping verb be it also takes different forms I am you are we they are he she it is it is my birthday in September so make sure you wish me you are very sweet and I am grateful okay rule number two simple or indefinite present tense is also used for scheduled events in the future like train or flight timings example the train arrives at 6 PM but it's only 11 am right now and 6 PM is in the future yet we say the train arrives at 6 PM the flight is at 2 am the movie starts at four o'clock now these are all events in the future so why are we using simple present tense that is because they're already scheduled they're in the calendar so they are like a fact so we use simple present tense rule number three simple present tense is also used in story writing to create drama as though things are happening right now I walk into the store he walks up behind me they pull out their guns and fire oh no but did you feel a part of the action I mean I could have said I walked into the store and the man walked up behind me Etc but where is the tension rule number four let's look at negative sentences in the present tense I do not paint they do not swim he does not remember her so the structure is subject plus dudas plus not plus main verb Now Memory tip do does plus not always comes before the main verb now quick recap are you we they do and do not he she it does and does not and you can use the contractions also when you speak don't and doesn't I don't like spicy food she doesn't like meat we don't have class on Saturdays you don't understand the instructions the cat doesn't like water now before we move on to the second type of tense if you have any questions on simple present tense then put it as a comment below P.S I read most of the comments statement of fact simple present tense so write to me okay tense number two present continuous tense you are learning English grammar I am talking to you rule number one present continuous tense is used to talk about actions that are happening at the present moment of time or maybe around the time of speaking you are sitting on a chair means as we speak right now you're sitting on a chair not yesterday not always but right now fun fact continuous has to use in the spelling you or you okay let's talk about the structure the structure is subject plus b plus verb ing Now Memory tip whenever you see ing teaching learning running it's a continuous tense and quick recap I am you are we they are he she it example you are learning English they are going to college it is raining outside I am studying for my exam well not really an exam but I'm preparing classes for you simbi is whimpering mourning groaning barking wagging her tail you get it now notice these two sentences and tell me what's the difference okay and comment below and tell me what's the difference what do you think versus what are you thinking do what do you think is simple present tense it's Universal what are your thoughts about this issue in general but what are you thinking is what are you thinking right now at this exact moment that is the present continuous tense okay so think about this let's say you're talking to me and I tell you that I'm learning Spanish but right now I'm talking to you and I'm not really learning Spanish at this exact time of speaking so does that mean I'm lying no no no no that I'm in the process of learning Spanish right now around this time the process started maybe a few weeks ago and it's not yet over so we can use the present continuous tense she is planning a vacation this doesn't mean that every single minute she's thinking about her vacation but that she's in the middle of the process of planning it ah my favorite thing to do is to plan a vacation what is yours comment below rule number two now for present continuous tense is also used to talk about a temporary situation so here are two sentences my mom lives in Delhi or my mom is living in Delhi what is the difference it all depends on how I see the situation if I think that Delhi is my mom's permanent place of residence and I'm gonna say my mom lives in Delhi but when I say she is living in Delhi I think it's a temporary arrangement she is living there at the moment it might change later now language is chosen as per your intent what do you want to say choose the words accordingly rakshit is studying medicine means he's doing it as of now this is a temporary situation he'll finish the course he'll start working at a hospital perhaps I am preparing dinner I'll get it over but right now I'm in the middle of it rule number three present continuous tense is also used to talk about Arrangements in the future that are scheduled that are in your calendar already example they are getting new laptops on Tuesday we are having dinner at a restaurant tonight she is going to the dentist at 2 30 PM I am flying to Fiji next week well not really I recently came back from a holiday in Fiji the reason we use this present continuous tense is because plans are made meetings are all scheduled it's in the diary it's as though the process has already begun rule number four present continuous tense is also used to talk about actions that we can control usually temporary once again now I'm going to give you two sentences and you tell me the difference you are a careful person you are being careful now you are a careful person is simple present tense statement of fact you're always a careful person but you are being careful implies that this is an unusual temporary situation that you can control you're trying to be very careful but usually you're not that way Arab is silly are always being silly being silly means that you are not normally silly you are just pretending to be silly right now a temporary unusual situation right now that you can control rule number five the present continuous tense can also be used to express an annoying habit now I'm going to show you two more sentences Arab is talking in class suhani is always talking in class whose action bothers you write your answer as a comment below suhanis of course because it's a habit she's always talking in class it sounds like an annoying habit rule number six present continuous let's look at it in the negative form structure is subject plus b plus not plus verb ing I am not meeting my friends on Friday we are not talking to him she's not reading that book they are not being very Cooperative now exception usually grammar teachers will tell you that present continuous should not be used with State verbs so State verbs or stative verbs they're verbs that describe a state or a condition rather than an action example love believe no understand hate remember Etc now usually you would say I understand you're not going to say I I am understanding I know not I am knowing but there are exceptions to this rule as well example I'm hating this music means it's a temporary State usually I like music but right now it's getting on my nerves especially this particular music I am loving my new haircut means it's temporary and I love it now I'm going to give you once again two sentences and you need to notice the difference between these two and tell me the difference in the comments suhani stays with us quite often I love having her over so honey is with us at the moment and I'm loving having a Rover first one is present simple it's a fact I love it every time she stays with us second one is a temporary situation and it's making me very happy at this point in time now sometimes we can break the grammar rules as long as you kind of understand the context in fact I'm finding a lot of nouns are becoming verbs in the present continuous for example we are Snapchatting youtubing what's happening I'm instagramming or Facebooking him it's like these brand names have kind of become actions present continuous actions hmm what about jimming is that an action comment below if you know more of these kind of noun action verbs time for the third tense dance number three present perfect tense and rule number one the present perfect tense is used to describe those kind of actions or events that started in the past and have consequences in the present now notice the difference between these two statements she lost her keys or she has lost her keys she lost her keys is like the event happened in the past maybe she found them maybe she got a replacement key made but either way the story is over and it has no bearing on this present moment but she has lost her keys implies that perhaps she's stuck without her keys right now she lost it in the past but it's impacting her current situation so the structure is subject plus has have Plus past participle a memory tip whenever you see the words have had or has you know that it is the perfect perfect tense okay notice that even though this is a present perfect tense the main verb is in the past participle form usually with an ed since we are talking about events that started in the past like worked talked danced spotted killed oh dear too much Netflix happening events that happened or started in the past but have an impact on the present remember that now irregular verbs can also be in their past participle form for example go becomes gone or went drink becomes drunk and becomes bean I have forgotten his name now I would use this when the person is right in front of me and I can't remember their name oh well not I won't say I forgot their name which is a past event it has no impact on the present I have cleaned my room so I can go out with my friends now this is a past action with an impact on the present now exception notice once again are you we they have and he she it has and by the way I have a detailed video on the use of has have and had and I'm going to drop a link for you below rule number two present perfect is also used to talk about events that started in the past but are incomplete now think about the difference between these two sentences I had three cups of tea yesterday yesterday is over it's in the past tense I have had three cups of tea today already not yet over continuing to the present moment so present perfect language is more about the intent rather than the rules think of what you want to say and then choose the tense accordingly my never went to Madrid simple past tense is used because maybe aunt is no more or maybe Aunt doesn't travel anymore it sounds like a final completed action Paul has never been to Madrid is an incomplete action present perfect tense which means there's a chance that Paul may go to Madrid sometimes this sentence can also be written as Paul hasn't been to Madrid so far now notice these two sentences Aditi never left Bangalore Bobby has never left Bangalore who is still alive Aditi or Bobby answer in the comment section well Bobby the present perfect shows an unfinished period of time until now while the past is over now we can often use contractions like Bobby's never left Bangalore this is Bobby has not Bobby is Bobby has never left Bangalore we walk three kilometers so far still incomplete I've met a lot of people in the last few days it's going on I might need some more people soon but the main reason we're going to use this present perfect tense is when we want to talk about the impact of that action on the present it's not about how long it's been going on Etc okay rule number three the present perfect tense is used to describe our life experiences up to the present I have traveled to 20 countries I have made over 400 videos on chat chat and I hope you've seen them she has been to Canada three times have you tried Ethiopian cuisine rule number three often times present perfect is is used with time Expressions that kind of indicate an indefinite time frame such as ever never already yet just recently so far example have you ever seen a shooting star I haven't yet sent that email notice that this has an extra layer of meaning what I'm meaning I'm intending to send that email but it has not been sent up to this point he has already left now when we use the past perfect it has implications to the presence so this statement perhaps means you can no longer say bye to him he has already left now it depends on the context but using past perfect adds more meaning notice the difference between I had lunch and I have had lunch using present perfect adds that extra layer of meaning this one implies I'm not hungry right now I have just had lunch I had lunch as my more like perhaps I had it at 2 pm Etc when and where present perfect on the other hand is all about the impact on the present rule number four in the negative sentence present perfect tense has a structure of subject plus has have plus not Plus past participle and these can be contracted as haven't and hasn't while speaking example she hasn't finished her report yet they haven't called since yesterday and now let's move on to the final present tense tense number four present perfect continuous tense I have been eating chocolate all morning oh I would love that I have been working since 7 AM true the action started in the past but it continues to the present and the structure is subject plus has have plus been plus verb ing the dog has been barking incessantly all night she has been crying all morning oh no know how sad memory tip notice that has have had plus ing perfect plus continuous rule number one the present perfect continuous tense is used for actions or situations that started in the past we are still going on in the present and they may continue in the future now these are being used to emphasize how long something has been happening and also to show the impact of that continuing action on the present it's very layered there are many layers inside this tense we have been saving money for our vacation all year long I have been researching on tenses for weeks and I hope you find this lesson useful they have been renovating their house for months now many times we emphasize the duration of the action or a situation by using time Clauses like since 7am for two weeks all day recently already Etc now notice the difference between these two sentences I have studied English and now I feel confident I have been studying English for the past two days the first one is present perfect which focuses on the result of the action I feel confident the second one is present continuous so the action is still going on it focuses on the ongoing nature of the action you're still studying it talks about how long it has been going on for and the impact on the present is also added like a layer like I'm tired of studying so the structure most of the times would look like subject plus has have plus bin plus verb ing plus since for time rule number two present perfect continuous is used to talk about things that have been happening recently or maybe actions that take that are taking place lately we have been watching movies all weekend well if you have some movie recommendations you could share them with me because I might just do some content around this it has been raining since morning I have been exploring some AI tools recently rule number three we usually don't use present perfect continuous tense to talk about State verbs remember we spoke about stative verbs example it would be wrong to say I have been hating this vegetable oh I hope you don't hate vegetables but if you do it would be more appropriate to say I hate vegetables in the simple present tense like a fact I have been belonging to this band would be wrong I belong to this band would be correct rule number four in the negative form the structure would be subject plus has have plus not plus bin plus verb ing plus since four time now the time Clause is optional but since we use it there I put it in the structure she has not been feeling well off late we can use the contraction hasn't or haven't example they haven't been working out at the gym recently I haven't been practicing music for weeks okay that closes the present tense which overall accounts for about 70 of all spoken English and if you have any questions drop them for me as a comment and it's time to move on to the past tense and its four forms tense number five simple past tense she played football this morning rule number one simple past tense is is used for past completed actions this by the way the second most commonly used tense after the simple present tense about twenty percent of the time you use the simple past tense structure is subject plus verb Ed for regular verbs for example he visited his grandparents last summer now lots of verbs are irregular and they don't actually follow a specific pattern sample went wrote took example I slept at 10 pm last night now quick riddle which common English verb becomes its own past tense by rearranging its letters come on leave me a comment below yes it's eats mango for breakfast yummy I love mangoes and my favorite is Alfonso mangoes so mango lovers in the audience show me some love rule number two often time expressions like yesterday last week two days ago are used in these sentences that indicate the specific time when the action or the event took place example we went to the beach last summer my sister finished the book last night rule number three in the negative form the structure would be subject plus did plus not plus verb Ed for regular verbs and we can use the contractions didn't I didn't go to the party last night she didn't finish her homework on time we didn't visit the museum during our vacation they didn't pass the exam despite studying hard he didn't eat lunch at the restaurant once again if you want the rules of do doesn't did then I'm going to drop a link for you below there is a video on the channel tense number six is past continuous tense I was drinking tea rule number one past continuous tense is used to talk about a continuing action at some point in the past or a state it's used to say that something was happening at a specific moment in the past now the structure would be subject plus was were plus verb ing example let's say that my friends played tennis from 9am to 11AM yesterday now that's a simple past tense but what happened at 10 AM yesterday they were playing tennis so if we are going to talk about a specific point in the past and they were in the middle of doing something then we use the past continuous tense last year this time I was living in Bombay I was drinking tea when the bell rang or Tanisha was cooking at 7 pm yesterday these are actions or events that were in progress or they were happening at a specific time in the past and we would use Wars for singular subjects like I he she it and were for plural subjects like you we they so the main verb remains in its base form and ing is just added to show continuous action example they were talking he was walking she was crying now rule number two this is an ongoing action or event which is often interrupted by another action or event I was reading a book at three o'clock when they called they were gossiping about Alia when she walked in they were playing tennis yesterday when I saw them at the club now we could use the Expression like at three o'clock or yesterday at this time while Etc now notice the difference between these two sentences we were walking home when we met Ted we walked home and we met Ted now the first one means that we were in the middle of walking home when we met Ted second one means that after the event of walking home had been completed we met Ted notice these two sentences when Karen arrived we were having dinner when Karen arrived we had dinner now in which of these two situations using Karen can say you started without me first one because when Karen arrived we were in the middle of having dinner it was ongoing when she arrived in the second statement when Karen arrived his simple past means a completed event so it's like saying after Karen arrived we had dinner rule number three the negative form is straightforward so the structure is subject plus was were plus not plus verb ing she was not riding a cycle I was not reading a book during the flight the flights are the perfect me time to read or listen to podcasts tense number seven past perfect tense I had already finished my work when he called I had learned to cook before the pandemic somewhat true but mostly I brushed up my cooking skills during the pandemic rule number one the past perfect tense is used to describe an action or event that occurred before another action or event in the past structure subject plus had Plus past participle they had gone to the movies before the rain started she had studied French for three years before she moved to Paris when I reached School the class had already started rule number two now it helps establish a clear sequence of events in the past example I had already eaten when she arrived or they had finished the project before the deadline now here's a quick riddle for you Krish left when ishan arrived Siddharth left when ishan had arrived ishan arrived when roshni was leaving dhruv had left when ishan arrived after ishan arrived Janice left who did not meet ishan leave your answers as a comment below drew the past perfect tells us that dhruv left before ishan's arrival rule number three time expressions are often used with the past perfect tense to give you that little additional context and also to indicate the order of events rule number three in negative sentences let's take a look at the structure structure uh is subject plus had plus not Plus past participle example she had not read the book before the book club meeting they had not met each other prior to the conference I had not traveled to Europe before my trip last summer he had not received the email before the meeting once again if you want a refresher on has have had there is a link in the description box below tense number eight past perfect continuous tense the final type of past tense I had been drinking tea all night I had been working there for five years before the company closed rule number one this is used to kind of describe ongoing repeated or continuous actions that started in the past and continued up until another point or event in the past it's quite similar to past perfect and it's used very rarely in spoken English the structure is subject had been verb ing she had been swimming for hours before the rescue board arrived the choir had been practicing for months before the concert now notice the difference between these two sentences she had studied for the test when it got canceled she had been studying for the test when it got canceled the first is a completed action and the second past perfect continuous the emphasis is on the duration and continuity of the action or event the focus is on the experience of the action she had been studying for hours before she took a break rule number two time expressions are often used with the past perfect continuous tense and they give you that additional context they also indicate the duration of the action or the event like for sins all day until Etc example they had been waiting for two hours before the bus finally arrived they had been playing tennis all morning before it started raining now notice the difference between these two sentences she was studying she had been studying the first is past continuous ongoing action without reference to any other past action she was studying this morning the second one is an ongoing action it started and continued for a duration in the past till some fast action interrupted it she had been studying for two hours when the electricity went okay another quick riddle for you Akash talks on the phone prithvi has been talking on the phone for an hour drishti is talking on the phone who is not necessarily on the phone right now Akash the others are talking now Akash usually does this is how different forms of past tense are used to denote different meanings rule number three now in the negative form this is used to indicate that an ongoing action or event had not been taking place for a specific duration before another past action or event it's kind of showing the absence of continuity or duration in the past example I had not been studying for long before I gave up or they had not been waiting for hours before they decided to leave the structure is subject had not been plus verb ing you can use a contraction hadn't been we hadn't been playing the guitar for very long before we got bored we hadn't been living in that City for a very long time before we moved okay now we've completed the past tense as well and if you have any questions examples or doubts on the present tense or past tense leave it to me as a comment below and now it's time to move on to the future tense and its four fonts tense number nine simple future tense I will drink tea rule number one the simple future tense is used to talk about events or actions that we believe will happen in the future things we think will happen in the future the structure is subject plus will shall plus verb the simple future tense uses will or shall with the base form of the verb for example I will go to the beach tomorrow or they will finish their project next week I think schools will open tomorrow you will surely enjoy this cake now whale is actually used more commonly shall gets used with I and V but it's like an old-fashioned way of speaking I shall go to the ball tonight and dance with the prince or dear Cinderella rule number two it's used to declare facts in the future or make predictions example it will rain tomorrow it will be a Tuesday on Diwali this year I will be in Bangalore tomorrow well not really tomorrow but I do go to Bangalore every now and then so if you live in Bangalore tell me in the comment section Grandma will be 90 years old soon rule number three future simple tense will is used to make an offer a promise a threat or a request let's look at each one of these the promise I will go to the gym tomorrow I will help you move houses Ronnie will take your cat to the vet in the evening threat I will never talk to you again or I will never lend you money again and offer we will make scones for tea tomorrow Mommy it's like we're meeting the queen for tea scones and cookies with Mommy okay she says she will help organize the party the request I hope you will come to the party tomorrow will you help me with my homework please rule number four will versus be going to will is used for a spontaneous decision or a prediction while going to is used for an intention or action that has already been planned or arranged example you are at the ice cream vendor and he asks you what flavor of ice cream would you wish to have you reply I will have a chocolate ice cream you use will because you decided that at the moment of speaking it was a spontaneous decision now let's say your friend calls you and say there's a potluck uh lunch being planned on Sunday you say oh nice I will bring Biryani you decide this at the moment of talking and you said I will bring Biryani cool so you decide to call one more friend and tell them about the plan when you call the third friend you tell them there's a potluck lunch on Sunday and I'm going to take Biryani this time you don't say I will take Biryani you say I'm going to take biryani because the intention was already made before you spoke I am going to take Biryani the intention has already been planned or arranged now one day before the party when your Biryani preparations have begun a friend calls you and asks you what are you doing what are you taking to the party you now use a simple present tense I am taking Biryani remember we use simple present tense to talk about future events that are scheduled I am taking Biryani instead of saying I'm going to or I will because this is now scheduled half cooked and confirmed almost like it has already begun rule number five future simple tense in the negative form the structure is subject plus will shell plus not plus verb she will not buy a new car we will not attend the meeting tomorrow he will not finish the project on time they will not visit their grandparents this summer tense number 10 future continuous tense I will be playing basketball tomorrow rule number one this indicates that an action will be carried out over a period of time not just at one moment and that action will be an ongoing action or event that will happen in the future the structure is subject plus will shall plus b plus verb ing I will be studying at this time tomorrow or they will be traveling next month she will be having dinner with friends at 7 pm we can use will or shall you will be or I shall be having tea with the queen next year at this time shall is typically used with I and we and it's more formal and old-fashioned rule number two time expressions are often used with the future continuous tense to provide additional context for example at this time tomorrow next week at 5 PM in a month I will be flying to Bangalore at this time next week this is true though she will be attending a yoga class at 6 pm tomorrow rule number three the same difference same difference between will and going to apply here also I will be studying tomorrow's spontaneous decision I am going to the concert tomorrow pre-planned intention rule number four in the negative form the structure is subject plus will shell plus not plus b plus verb ing we will not be waiting for you at the airport when your flight lands the team will not be practicing for the championship match this afternoon tense number 11 future perfect tense I will have uploaded 500 videos on chat chat by the end of 2023 rule number one future perfect tense is used for actions or events that will be completed before a specific point or action in the future structure is subject plus will Plus have Plus past participle you you will have finished packing by the time the cab arrives come over by 10 am I will have cleared up my room by then it is this idea of looking back on an action that will have already happened at a specific point in the future I will have finished my work by 5 PM or they will have left for a vacation by next week once again time expressions are used to give more context rule number two in the negative form the sentence has become rather long and it's not really used that often but it is subject plus will not have past participle they will not have saved enough money for their dream trip he will not have fixed the car by the time we need it and finally tense number 12 future perfect continuous tense she will have been teaching at the school for 20 years when she retires rule number one this is used to describe ongoing or continuous actions or events that will continue until a specific point or action in the future by next month I will have been working at this company for three years this is actually true and time really flies doesn't it structure future perfect continuous tenses all the elements that we have learned future plus perfect plus continuous so subject plus will shell have has been verb ing they will have been living in that house for a decade by next summer by tomorrow I will have been practicing for piano for two hours straight once again time expressions are used to give more context and that brings us to this end of this beautiful comprehensive Marathon class on tenses I hope you found it useful and do remember to download it so you can come back later when you want to revise and share this with
