what was it a scary moment in any sense when you did applause and that's the Margo Channing role from All About Eve did you dread that some night Betty Davis the original creator of the role will be sitting out front and I hope they don't tell me when it is Oh while they knew not to tell me yes oh yes terrified terrified absolutely and apprehensive and I mean as Betty Davis was my heroine from the time I was in my early teens I was very apprehensive about her coming to see the show and she did come to see it and she I wrote about that as well and so it was yes I was glad that I didn't no no I must never know when anyone's out front because that makes me nervous wreck one of the great arts of our business is to be able to compliment someone that you his performance you've seen and she said something to you you something like you know I mean it when I say you're the only one who could have done this yeah yes it's it's hard to do that very very hard to do it the stars I love best about you as as you standing out in front of star Sardis try to meet stars and producers not stars as much as producers I really I wanted to get a partner that chased betty davis around enough trying to meet her no I didn't put yourself together all right did you not wait lonely did you not wait to see Betty Davis and finally got invited up to her suite and when you got to meet her you couldn't speak that's true that's vanish yes oh oh definitely oh why was I adored her I mean she was my she was my movie Idol but I was able to meet her because one of my uncle's was a very good friend of her kind of secretary companion everything Robin Byron who is married to a man called Arthur Byron Betty Davis I know you're a fan oh yes Oh gigantic still am yeah I think she's one of the most extraordinary movie stars that has ever been and if they if they ever did a true retrospective of Betty Davis movies on television yeah I mean the today's generation would see not only the beauty of the woman which was extraordinary but the variety of things she could play she never thought of herself that way we had her she was here a couple months ago yeah and she never thought of herself as really attractive and she was when she was really lucky Oh stagger unique unique oh you naked but I mean remember Jezebel and dark victory oh wow and she's still working she yes but she had to put an ad in the papers remember years ago that's right she had to advertise for a job now if you can imagine that you don't think that this business has a problem if someone like Betty Davis has to advertise and say you know I'm out of work how about it guys have you forgotten all about me but something wrong something wrong somewhere definitely definitely but she doesn't have to advertise anymore unfortunately do you think the dream of being an actress came from or the desire to be an actress came from well I think part of it probably was my wanting to play other people wanting to get outside of myself and be somebody else and then I had this enormous enormous crush on Betty Davis who was my heroine I wanted to be just like her I just cut school to see her movies and I I think it just came from all of that and I had this insane imagination tell me about the musical play applause it was a big thing in your life oh I always wanted to be in a musical I love beautiful I know all the songs love to sit around a piano and anybody's feet although I'm not a singer never pretended to be and so when I was offered applause because I thought all buddied Here I am Betty Davis my heroine so it's a musical version of Oliver two years ago version of Oliver I mean deputy versus today the same part Margot Charlie the Betty Davis for some reason honey business a woman's career the things you drop on your way up the ladder so you can move faster you forget you'll need them again when you get back to being a woman one career all females have in common whether we like it or not being a woman you
