i encountered this man's ministry over 20 years ago i'll never forget one night you were at st paul um life and praise church in detroit michigan and you sat on me off on the piano and you started singing while we sing it was over 20 years ago it impacted my ministry so much i don't think i've ever told you this but it was that night that i knew without question that there was a call of god on my life to record i was satisfied with just serving my dad's ministry i never had the opportunity to tell you this it was at saint paul pastor t.j hemphills church and you sat on the piano that night and i realized that this wasn't just some hobby it wasn't just something that i was doing in church but that god was calling me that god had given me a voice for the masses and that was as you were ministering that night god's brought this thing full circle and here you are tonight this morning to share listen i want you to receive him he's not just the grammy award winner we know all of that stuff i believe that this man that god is repositioning your feet that this man is a voice to our generation and i want you to receive him today not as kirk franklin the musician but as kirk franklin the voice to our generation [Music] sit thank you thank you so i only have a few minutes before you need to go into your second service so i want to try to get into the word thank you for having me pastor first lady thank you thank you to my beautiful wife tammy i love you so um turn to mark mark chapter 9 mark chapter 9 verses 33-35 mark chapter 9 verses 33 through 35 thank you so much for letting me be here with you this morning i really appreciate it and it says here says and they came to capernaum when he was in the house he asked them what were you arguing about on the road this is jesus speaking but when they kept quiet because on the road they had argued about who was the greatest sitting down jesus called the twelve to himself and said and listen church listen he says if anyone wants to be first he must be the very last and servant of all anyone that wants to be first must be the very last and servant of all lord bless your word amen so i was playing basketball with my with my son at the time uh who was about nine years old at the time and we were over his grandparents house we played basketball playing basketball and i was impressing my nine-year-old son with my don't laugh with my basketball skills i said don't laugh i'm in the backyard on the basketball court with my son and i am killing the game i said don't laugh i am slam dunking i'm doing 360s i'm shooting threes and my my nine-year-old son just thinks i am incredible he's like look at my daddy my daddy slam duncan whoa look at my my daddy is my daddy could play some basketball don't laugh and then it kind of dawned on me and i started to feel kind of guilty because i had my little boy impressed with my basketball skills but the reality was is that i had him impressed at a lowered level because the truth is what i did is i took the basketball goal and i lowered it to a level that i was able to perform at [Applause] so he was impressed with my skills but the conviction kicked in because the truth was he was celebrating his father at a lowered bar and so i had to at some point make a decision what was i going to continue to allow my son to celebrate me and set in my son psyche a lowered standard of celebration or would i be a responsible father and an embarrassed father and lower the basketball back to the level that it's supposed to be to reveal my lack of ability and is that not the reality of the culture that we're living in right now that the culture is is that we we have lowered the bar to such a level that even we celebrate things that shouldn't even be celebrated at that level anymore we we will celebrate people that have been married two years like they've been married 20. we'll celebrate a young lady going into high school as a virgin because that's the new level we'll hear about a terrorist attack and if only 20 people get killed we we breathe easily because we've lowered the level we expect it to be more but when it's just a few we forget it's still 20 people that died because we've lowered the level we celebrate church growth more than people growth because we've lowered the level so the truth is is that is that is that we've lowered the level and we celebrate the shot like it's the standard because lord bars make you think that you're better than you really are in the text we see that the disciples had lowered the ball and that low the bar and out of all the miracles and life-changing things they experienced under the tutelage of jesus the most important thing that had came to them and became to them about who was the greatest with this reality of a lord born society even then in the text and even now i wanted to think of a title and a topic that could be reflective of how we have lowered the standard and the culture when i thought of a title and topic that you could be connected to i wanted to pull from one of the greatest uh uh speakers and one of the greatest ministers probably right now by time bishop elder kendrick lamar and he has a word for us today and the word from kendrick bishop elder dr deacon lamarius sit down be humble [Applause] say it with me sit down be humble see the disciples forgot that positions are heavily assigned not earthly given [Applause] ephesians 2 and 10 teaches us that we are god's workmanship created in christ jesus that he prepared in advance for us to do so the truth is you're not really doing what you think you're doing you're only doing what was already assigned to you to do before you got here so sit down be humble the disciples forgot that the fuel of pride is fear because they fear will make you say what about me and say they forgot they didn't realize that there is no expiration date on purpose so sit down be humble abraham noah moses sarah daniel simeon anna joshua all have their aarp cards when god called them that's dope ain't that ain't that dope cause because see see the problem with popular church uh uh uh philosophy is that we preach seasons like one is greater than the other see the concept of this is your season can make you think that good days are better than bad ones because see we are in a it's your season generation it's your time it's your season but beloved i want to remind you that the season you left is just as important as the season you're going in because the season that you left if you're so quick to get out of it you will not be prepared for the seat you must understand that there are four seasons and all of them are good all of them are necessary all of them are important for the development of who god is creating in you so stop whining and complaining you need to sit down and [Applause] humility isn't weakness but it's power under control it's jesus standing in front of his accusers not saying a word because write this down beloved this is a very important point the loudest one in the room is always the weakest there's another trick about the enemy because he's such a deceiver is that you also have to be very careful of false humility because false humility is pride in disguise you see it you say right now in matthew 26 35 it is jesus telling the disciples very soon some of you are going to betray me and deny me and it is peter in verse 35 saying jesus i will never deny you i will even lay down my life for just 34 verses later later jesus was arrested and the servant girl as peter one give the one call with jesus and peter denied it verse 71 and he went to the gateway and another girl asked him were you with jesus and he denied it verse 73 and later crowd walked up to peter said surely you're the one that was with the one they called jesus and peter cussed them out and said i do not know the man who you're truly uh revealing because who you truly are is revealed under pressure [Applause] that's why every season is so necessary and the problem is is that we are so quick to move from where we are because of the comfort of where we are but you got to understand something the reason why you enjoyed grandmama's cooking when you were younger you know why how cooking was better than yours because see when you were younger you did what i did you would take a microwave meal you would stick it in the microwave and try to eat the problem with microwavable meals is when you stick a fork in the middle it's still cold because the microwave is not able to get to the deepest part of what needs to be dealt with the reason why you enjoyed mama's cooking so much is because mama sunday dinner she didn't start cooking it on sunday she started cooking sunday dinner saturday night and what happened was saturday night the meal was marinating the meal was going through the seasons and the delicious process of becoming a better meal so when you stuck into it the inside was not cold too many christians you stick a inside of us and we're still cold in the middle because we're not going through the necessary process of becoming like him stop complaining sit down [Applause] lowliness loneliness is a prerequisite for influence and god's economy the way up is down in god's economy the way up is down in god's economy the way up and jesus not only because he see see what you understand is that i can impress you with my success but i can impact you with my failures tell you a quick search here quick serve one below um i'm not good at awards shows and the reason i'm not good at the war shows because i hate the man that i see in myself when i win an award i see the pride i see the cockiness i see the little you know in me when i lose an award i'm like i ain't no good no more and i sucked that i wasn't that good so i don't like the about holiness that i see in myself at a ward show i'm being 100 i'm being five twenties with you one hundred with you there was once award show there was one award show that i went to called american music awards and i went chill and i showed up late because i did not want to show up on time because because it was one of my worst shows i knew they weren't going to know who i was i'm a gospel artist everybody had no idea i was so i called myself going late and going late i was hoping i was going to miss this thing called the red carpet because the red carpet you have that you've seen you see the war show it's a red carpet goes from about the back of that wall down to the down to the front of the church and it's full of his red carpet and now whole red carpet is full of paparazzi camera people ready to take a picture so i pulled up to this awards show late hoping that that whole process was going to be over when i pulled up and i got out of the car i got out of the car and there was beyonce and her whole crew her whole clam squad she's from houston she's like oh hey kirk how you doing how's tammy kids i'm doing good miss b everybody everybody good praise the lord praise him and so we're getting ready to go up under this tent and above this 10 right before you go to to the red carpet there was beyonce myself and my publicist and a group that you probably remember from the 80s they were they were like reunited for their big performance called duran duran you remember duran duran well duran duran was a very dope um the dope like pop grew back in 80s so up under this tent right before you go to the red carpet was duran duran and their whole crew in front of me i'm in the middle with my publicist beyonce and her whole crew was behind me so the person said now when we call you we want you when we say go won't you want you guys to leave up under this tent turn to your right the paparazzi will call your name and they'll go take pictures of you here it is again duran duran beyonce nem me and my publicist do you remember the movie harlem nights do you do you remember the shooting scene when they had these big guns but our senior hall had this little bit of gun so they say okay you know okay so when we say go we want you to go all right and it said okay it's time to go go and duran duran goes and paparazzi sees them they're ready to round pop pow pow pow you know camera's [Laughter] and my publicist they're going to visit me in public say and we got kirk franklin somebody said pop [Applause] he was giving it to him beyonce pop pop pop and my public scum she was getting pissed off and we got kurt franklin it was like pop and it was like a camera phone or something [Applause] so i got pissed off i got pissed off that's i'm not going to go through this i'm going to go to my seat i gave him the church finger and i was going to go down and as soon as i was getting ready to leave and go to my seat the holy spirit said wait a minute i want you to stay here and i want you to go the whole way like this watch watch this church what's this shirt i knew this holy ghost because this ain't kirk he said i want you to go the whole way like this because i want you to feel what it feels to be me i wake them up every morning and they don't want my picture [Applause] i provide for them every day and they don't want my picture i protect them from sin-sick and diseases and they don't even know my name so i want you to go the whole way and if don't nobody know you i want you to feel what it feels to be like me but i would not have been able to hear that if i didn't sit down and be humble because i would have missed a divine opportunity to be like him and how many opportunities have you missed to be like him because it was not comfortable or convenient or the way you wanted it to be and you missed an opportunity to grow so now you're 45 and 50 years old and you're still a child in your faith cause you never take you never take advantage of these divine opportunities to grow cause you won't sit down and be humble you're with me give the lord hand praise give the lord a prayer [Applause] [Music] now here's the very important point i want to get how much longer do i have what i'm going to have okay here's the point i want you to understand about this jesus had to have this very immature conversation with disciples you missed exactly jesus had to have this kindergarten conversation with disciples what we would call modern day christians he's having to have a baby conversation with grown negroes who have seen him heal who have seen him bring back miracles and they're having an argument about who is the dopest in the crew could it be could it be that the decline of christianity and america which is happening at every church in this country people are leaving the church about the trolls millennials are no longer going to church by the jokes could the problem be that it's not the world's problem but it's our problem could the problem be that the body of christ is broken and they do not see us anymore as a place to come to but a place to run away from could it be that the pride and arrogance and ugliness and stinkiness that they're seeing from us is not allowing the body to grow as it should because jesus keep having to have these kindergarten conversations with us grown negroes you don't believe me let's look at it we talk to people like they crazy we can't admit that sometimes we just don't know we don't know how to say i'm sorry we're too holy to show our scars we've forgotten god does not exist for us we exist for him but how how powerful would it be if the body of christ did a self-examination and looked up to the stars and said it's me it's me it's me o lord standing sit down sit sit sit sit you're enjoying saying man before jesus took the job of becoming god in the flesh before he took the job of coming to earth and being like us jesus was aware of the necessity of death jesus was born with the image of the cross already in the back of his mind and he was focused on that because you know what he did he understood that the reason of his existence was to die for you and to die for me so he was very clear on his assignment and you know why he was very clear in his assignment is because he read the small print remember jesus is god in the flesh and the beginning was the word and the word was god and the word was with god so jesus was there in the very beginning the logos the god breathed of it was already written on him because he was the word so he could look at himself and read the word move a hand and read the word think cathartic read the word because he was the word so he understood that he was not coming to earth for a party but for a funeral because he could look at his hand and be reminded as soon as he got caught up in the praise he could look at his hand and be reminded as soon as he got one to get tempted in the glory he could look at his hand and be reminded because his hand was already written that this is what's getting ready to come so stay humble stay humble stay humble look at you be humble even after he fed the multitudes the bible says that jesus went away to himself to pray because you know what he did not want to get caught up in their glory he wanted to stay humble humble humble humble and the problem is is that for so many of us including me clinton because i'm not anyone else we come to this building for pep rallies we come to this building for these feel good moments the reason why some of our marriage is not lasting because you're not having fun no more you didn't get married to have fun you got married to be transformed into the image of jesus christ and the reason why you didn't marry nobody that's gonna make you always happy that you could always get your freak on every dog on day is cause you need to learn some self-control some humility some discipline some tenderness some kindness you need to sit down and be humble this is not this is not a disco this is not the state fast this is the body of christ where you become like the body of christ where he breaks you and bruises you but if we don't give you the totality of the scripture you don't remember that the small print will say the small princess in this world you will have trouble the small prince says if they crucified me they will crucify you if they talked about me they will talk about you because you got to read the small print this is not just about your blessing but also about your brokenness [Applause] i have a nephew i have a nephew that went to the military i have a nephew he married my niece hey man so he's not my biological nephew but but but but but he got stationed to korea and my niece was really upset that they were having to move to korea they were in their early 20s and having to move to korea and having to move to korea because he got stationed there and she was crying she was pregnant she didn't want to leave she came over to her house talking to me tammy she didn't really want to go she was really hurt that she had to go i mean his career his career that's a long way it's a long way you know you just can't change your mind in korea you know home won't go you know you just can't catch another bus to korea you know it's korea and she didn't want to go well my nephew came over to tell us by and when he was telling us by he was like real cool he was gucci right he was like you know i mean he was all loved he was like you know um i'm getting ready to go get ready i love you on your prayer and he's a very godly young man i'm so proud of him and i'm like nephew why are you not upset that you leaving like like like you're fitting to go to korea think korea negro korea not kansas career he said i'm gucci i'm good let me tell you why i'm good he said because in high school my senior year when i signed up for the reserves a lot of me and the homies because you know a lot of times teenagers sign up for the reserve because they want that check right quick check he said uncle when i signed up for the reserves i did not just get the check i read the small print and the small print said if we ever call your black behind you got to go wherever we tell you to go i'm telling you right now bishop every believer every church goer you will not get the fullness of your christian life until you start reading the small print in other words don't read the parts of the bible that make you feel good don't just get parts of the bible that help you defend your case don't just read the parts of the bible that help you beat up on gay people read the parts of the bible they keep you to keep your pants up with the women in church [Applause] [Music] [Applause] don't just pick and choose parts of the bible to fit your prejudices and your biases read the totality of scripture if you really want to be like jesus this ain't no buffet this is the word of god [Applause] sit down be humble sit down be humble sit down church be humble church if my people [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] one of the greatest things that calls for humility is when people acknowledge that they can't live without jesus one of the greatest things that can heal a home is when a man is humble enough to admit that he has not done that all right it takes humility to grow it takes humility to change if you were here that's closing out this man day this man weekend celebrating marriages and men man if pride has killed your home if pride is killing your ministry pride is killing your life and it is time for you to realize that if jesus was humble how dare i not be humble in everything i do i've had to go to tammy so many times and say i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry i didn't have a daddy i didn't know how to do that i did that wrong i'm sorry i was too friendly with that young lady i i crossed the line with i'm sorry i messed up over here i'm sorry i should have told you everything about the money over there i'm sorry baby girl you know what i didn't really honor you well that way i'm sorry baby i'm trying to get some sex but i ain't took you to dinner in a while i'm sorry baby i had to be able to be honest and confess my sins to my woman because the more i confess my sins you know i started to see everything i did every time i said i'm sorry my woman got bigger every time i said i'm tired my woman got bigger you know what i was doing i was speaking logos back into my wife i was pouring back into my wife and she got bigger and now i ain't gotta ask for none i gotta get off me [Applause] but it took but it took humility every man in this room if you are standing in your own way of god doing this on your life and you want the breath of the king on your dreams i like that i like to write that down the breath of the king on your dreams write that down that's a song write that down the breath of the king on your dreams [Music] if you were here man and you're standing in your way kendrick has a word for you sit down but i'm gonna flip it and i'm gonna say come down and be humble if you are man here and you are tired of being your own enemy come down be humble i'm talking to men talking to men talking to men [Applause] wow man man man man my soldiers my dudes my brothers [Applause] man look at me man man man man look at me look at me i'm proud of you i'm very proud of you i'm very proud of you i'm very proud of you let me tell you what i'm proud of you let me tell you i'm proud of you they have no idea what it is to be you they have no idea how most of us had no blueprint and how we live every day pissed off because we have no blueprint we don't know how to talk we don't know how to give we don't know how to be emotional we don't know how to do any of that and it's like i want to know but i don't even know how to do it and so you lower the bar and you know you're not making shots at the right bar but you're just trying to make it you're just trying to make it and i know what that feels like but here's the beautiful part what if that day on the court with my son thank you holy ghost what if that down the court with my son if i lowered the goal i said what if i lowered the goal and in my panic i'm like okay now i gotta really shoot at the right goal and what if as soon as i lifted it up because i was willing to admit that i wasn't that good what if and a car pulls up in the driveway and michael jordan gets out and what if michael jordan says kirk you know what i'm gonna do for you because i see you trying to do it the right way i'm gonna make the shot for you and every shot that he makes he's looking at my son saying this is for your daddy this is for your daddy because he knew i couldn't do it guess what jesus does if we confess our sins if we confess our inabilities and our inadequacies jesus pulls up and says give me the ball and what you can't do i'm getting ready to do it for you you can't make the shot but i'm gonna make the shot for you you can't hit them threes i'ma hit the three for you you don't have to be a husband i'm gonna be a husband in you you do not be a father i'm gonna be a father in you you don't know how to take care of money i'm gonna take your money for you i'm gonna look out for you because i will never leave you i will never forsake you cause i live to make the shots [Applause] so man let's let's get down [Music] and let's be humble [Music] [Applause] and i'm asking every soldier i'm asking every soldier in your own way because what's so dope about god soldiers is he can hear us all at the same time every soldier right now i want you to have a 100 convo with god right now and tell him you want to get out of the way you want him to change you to help you to live in you to make the shot for you right now talk to him talk to him talk to him you don't need a preacher you don't need a bishop this is you and your father talk to him right now right now right now right now you can do it out loud you can do whatever you want to this is the moment that is yours right now right now talk to him talk to him talk to him talk to him talk to him p100 not the cute christian stuff b100 be 100. ladies if you have a man down here ladies if you have a man down here i want to invite you to come put your hands on your man come put your hands on your bed ah and for some of you ladies i'm going to ask you to help me do something that's very difficult in your power for some of you ladies i'm going to ask you to forgive who he was [Music] [Applause] [Music] and right now right now right now receive who he shall be man we just want to be better sometimes we don't know how to do it and we're too embarrassed to say that we're christians that don't always know and that's a shame that we built a culture of scared christians that are too afraid to even admit that they don't know and they scared and they don't understand because they don't want to be looked at as less than shame on us shame on us that we don't give you a safe place to fall shame on us shame on us shame on us but in the building if you know it's time to let go of that mask and be free to be what god is building in you and you refuse to keep letting church dictate who jesus wants to be in you if you know that god is okay with you becoming who he wants you to be wait wait wait remember god does not wear a watch he is not waiting to get you to hurry up and become god is patient with you he is walking it out with you he is working it out with you he is in the journey with you and if you're glad that jesus is not like christian people if you're glad that jesus is not like church people if you're glad that jesus is long-suffering and if you know that all things are working together for the good of them that love the lord and he loves you he looks at you and he loves you rejoice rejoice rejoice rejoice [Music] rejoice so [Music] i'm proud of you man i'm proud of you and man man this ain't magic the all came magic the whole team imagine when you get up you still gotta fight when you get up you still gotta work you gotta work faith that works it you still got to work you still got to discipline your thinking you still got to maybe change some phone numbers if you're mad man you got to get rid of some of them lady friends if you're mad you can't have a bunch of home girls it just don't work it just don't work we can try to justify it just don't work she's just my friend no that ain't your friend it just don't work it just don't work it don't work man you're only going to get out of this what you put in that's it that's it god will give you as much of him as you want god will give you as much of him as you want but you gotta want it you can't complain and keep doing the same thing you want god to bless you but your life is stinking it don't work dog it don't work but i'm telling you you're too great to not give it your all you're too great you're too great do you know how great you are do you know how important you are do you know how valuable you are my dude look at you look at you so when you get up from this altar you got to work you got to work but he that endured till the end will make threes [Applause] [Music] stay right there stay right there we we're gonna go next week we won't have this problem this service will start at 10 a.m and we won't have this problem but there some of you men who are on the altar you need to stay here because you don't have a pastor you're on this altar you need to stay here because you don't have a church that's one of the missing pieces stay on this altar don't go listen to me don't go back stay on this altar there are other people in this room and nobody's moving nobody's moving this moment is too important nobody's moving there are people in this room and for a long time you have been disconnected from god it doesn't matter how you maybe you have personality conflicts in your last church or maybe you you messed up in your last church and you just felt like it's better for me to just disappear than have to deal with the reality of what i did guess what none of that even matters the only issue of importance right now is that god sent you to this church today because tomorrow is supposed to be so good but the man of god already said it you got to do the work the ball is in your court you got to answer the call it's no coincidence that you were here today and not listen to me i know what the devil is already saying to you come back next week when the pastor preaches so you know you'll hear the pastor preach let me tell you something your connection to this church has nothing to do with my ability to perform wants you in this church because what he's doing in this church is necessary for your life doesn't matter whether i preach or who preaches the grace of god the move of god in this church is necessary for what god is doing in your life there are about 15 people in the balcony who need to be on this altar this is your church i know this your first time listen you made way worse mistakes on the first time so we're not going to get integrity now i'm go i'm going to be patient no the bible says when you hear god's voice harden not your heart you know you've heard from god today you need a church man you need a pastor that's that missing peace you need a community of faith that you can be connected to that will continue to provide the strength that you need to move to the next place in your life you're sick of going in circles you're tired of being around people who are always negative and always drama you need to be connected to some people who are headed in the same direction you're headed in i want to give you this opportunity we're already over time but you you've been overdue you've been over time you've been disconnected from the family of faith for way too long and i know church folks are crazy some of them are in here that's the reality of life they're crazy people on your job you don't quit your job are you gonna ever find a perfect church no cause the moment you join it the moment you join it it's going to lose its status but guess what you're sitting around people who when they came to this church they were a and just every week they just kept coming and people are coming brothers brother so let's do that let's do this those of you who are already connected to a church those of you who are already connected to this church you go on back to your seat but those of you who are on this altar who know that god is saying this is the church this is the day you stay here come on let's give god praise for those who are staying welcome home man [Music] welcome home y'all
