the show is actually titled Mavericks nice where did you come up with that my grandmother all credit who gave me my name from the old TV show they were Cowboys who played poker every episode they'd like ride to some town they end up in some big poker match they win they get the girl and leave town often they like save the town so that's why I you to throw when they get the girl of course of course do you play poker I do play poker are you any good not as good as me poker are you really yeah are you serious absolutely not it's my poker [Music] F show is not really about entrepreneurialism but kind of more about the person that becomes an entrepreneur did you always know you want to do exactly what you're doing I think so every time I would say had an idea or I saw something I would do my best to make it happen so when I was 9 years old the show The Real World came out I remember me and my best friend Allison were sitting and it it debuted and I looked at her and I go this is what I want to do I want to be on a reality show really and I was like when we're 18 can we make an audition tape and send it in and she was um her dad's a a manager she was like We'll make a tape I I'll film yours we'll give it to my dad to send it to MTV and then when we turned 18 I was like are we ready she's like there's not a chance we're doing this so I had that in my head but then my real vision for wanting to do the show I had a clothing store and I loved clothes you were a stylist too right I was yeah yeah I was a stylist and I had a closet organizing business anything with just organizing and clothes I was obsessed with I thought okay well if we show what we do and we film in our store then we'll bring more business to the store it was always kind of what business can we show and grow that and was your mom always encouraging it always she was a housewife and a mom for her whole marriage to my dad they were married um maybe about 12 or 13 years and then when she married my stepdad she got her agents license her manager's license they didn't have a lot of money you'd think you know maybe uh at the time my stepdad would but she didn't and they figured it out and they had between the two of them eight kids then had two together so that was 10 kids she really hustled and figured it out and figured out like a a speaking business for him to where he can go and give speeches and write a book so she pushed him to do that yeah and she got his book deal and she was just figuring it out as she went I remember at one point I was assisting her they'd have to write these like offer letters for his speeches and so I would be typing them on the typewriter and helping her out and I was just in her office and it was just her doing everything and I really saw her figure it out I'd hear her negotiating and see her be a manager it was fascinating so you always kind of what you do now figuring out how these things go together was that just natural was that just in you because that's a marketing principle but it's also really a a strategy thing I think it came natural it's just what I didn't really think anything of it it was just this is how it has to be and this is just what's going to happen I didn't really think strategic on that I mean there's so many times when I could have like laid out all of the business opportunities that came my way and I was the opposite of strategic and I tried everything to figure out what my passion was what I really loved what my Lane was there wasn't really a lane and I just had to figure out what mine was at that time were you literally just throwing [ __ ] at the wall and saying what was stuck to the wall you weren't thinking strategically not at the beginning I mean people would come to us with opportunities and we would I would do everything and things would completely contradict each other I would be doing like a weight loss product that I was promoting and a cupcake line at the same time and Sketchers at that time I just wanted to try everything I thought this isn't going to last I might as well you know work and get this while I can cuz who knows if our show is going to be on another season and we might as well just milk it as much as you try it's funny you say that because at Spring Hill our brand our tagline is literally exactly what you just described it's play on fake it until you make it it's make it until you make it and you just kept go just like [ __ ] keep going but I do also love the fake it till you make it because I think if you are a person that is not happy or is depressed and you can't get up to don't have that drive to work if you're faking that you're happy and you are at least putting out that energy that you are happy you will feel that you will get there I always have really felt that do you feel like you're there do you feel like you've made it I'm a very competitive person I'm I feel very blessed what you do with these days it's just always been like a personal thing like I'm always like a numbers thing on for to myself you know you're just hard on yourself yeah but in a great way like I'll have maybe um a number of I don't know what I think I would achieve for the year oh my God if I make it or Beat it I'm like running around the house I think it's good if you set goals for yourself and when you achieve them there's nothing better than that feeling of being proud of yourself like I always tell my kids I'm so proud of you and I am so proud of them and I will say that but I also say you should be so proud of yourself because I don't ever want them feeling like they need other people's approval and other people's standards you should be proud of yourself cuz you did that I think everyone's goals in life are very personal and everyone doesn't have to have the same stand standards or the same goals to feel like they've made it I think Happiness is when you make it so do you feel like yeah I agree with that with your kids you're learning about them you learn about new things through your kids you meet people they teach you I think the purpose of kids is really to like Rach you everything I'm a person who's very hard on myself and I actually figured this out I did this breathing exercise and what came of it I realized I'm so hard on myself I actually don't ever even appreciate anything I do I'm happy but it's funny I realize also in me kind of pushing and going for things is where I the most happy but I should take a moment every now on the end just for self-gratification appre like oh [ __ ] I did it see I do take time I absolutely take the time and I love that like I have the best support system if I have like certain goals and I've reached those I would call like Khloe up and she'd fill my room up with balloons and we'd have a personal moment or if something really good happens and Achieve something or get something or do something that I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams growing up that I would have I'll sit in my room on my bed jump up and down on my bed or cry in the shower and be like oh [ __ ] thank you Dad I cannot believe that I did this I can't believe that this has happened I tell everyone I like the best circle of friends in the world like I hit the [ __ ] Lottery when it comes to my friend and family and sister group my sisters weren't my sisters I would have chosen them to be my best friends can you imagine living a life and having everything and having it all but then who do you share it with that's horrible there is nothing funner and so satisfying to me than being able to live this life with the people that I'm living it with and if it wasn't for that then no I wouldn't have made it are there big goals that you've wanted to achieve that you either missed or have not achieved yet I mean I'm always wishing are you like a daily goal person too like set little goals TOS it always big things like for the year it's big and I'm always setting things for myself whether it's I want to emotionally be this way or you know mentally could be a feeling yeah it's not really always like a materialistic thing like I want yeah skims came about well over 10 years ago like in my head I always was like cutting up shapew wear and leggings and I just was cleaning out my closet and found my original pairs that I would cut up and I would dye them in the sink with like te te bags and coffee bags cuz everything was always too light to fit my skin tone I found all my originals that I would cut up and it just made me feel so proud cuz I was like I thought of this almost 15 years ago when I was styling and so I like to think of my brand as like a solution-based brand something that I can share with my sisters with my girls with the customer if I launch skin care and Beauty it's cuz I'm taking everything I've learned from the best facialists the best estheticians taking making all those secrets and like giving it to you guys I'm such a girls girl I always will share like my secrets and my tips and that's kind of how I view my Brands so what do you consider yourself would you consider yourself like are you and there's you know designers artists you know marketers business like what is what does Kim consider herself like for instance myself I would say I'm a marketer Storyteller I always use the word Storyteller I always say guys we have to tell the story we are storytellers we have to explain the product to people from start to finish we have to storytelling I'm I I would say my strongest point is marketing I would say I'm a law student which is killing me and I hope that I can check that off soon I would definitely say Mom first and my toughest time ever is between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. our school drop off CU I have you know four kids so I'm taking all of them it's like when you're at a pit stop and you're trying to change attire it's like you get dressed you get dressed you get dressed brush your teeth yeah the mornings are it's a four ring circus say that's my toughest job um but my most rewarding how do you do it all actually run the business be a mom and did you learn that from your mom is that who you learn watching that from I think my mom and my dad you know my dad was the one that would get up and drive us to school and then I'd see him go to his office and my mom would be at home I learned from both of them honestly I worked for my dad for about 5 years in his office so I learned so much just being with him and he was really strict my mom was more lenient so the mix of both of them together was really I think how I how I learned everything and do you love being an entrepreneur I do I used to like be in my dad's office I loved buying and selling things on eBay and I would do deals with my dad like hey if you let me buy these shoes and put it on your credit card I'll pay you back in like 10 days with like x amount of Interest and I'd buy them and I'd put them up on eBay and I'd be photographing them in his office while I'm working you know totally on a separate job with him being an entrepreneur is I'm one to it gets difficult at times I mean obviously for you a big part of your and your family's life everyone gets to see on the show but are there times when it gets really hard as you said The Balancing Act of being a mom and an entrepreneur I am my dad but it's a much different job than being a mom I'm clear on that um so are there points and what is it that gets really hard about building skims and being an entrepreneur that you go like [ __ ] this is hard there are times and what are those times like I mean if you have a product and you're like a product based brand then obviously you'll run into challenges if it's like supply chain issues fabrication issues Factory issues I mean I've gone through all of it I'm uh the type of person I am is I will see the problem and try to fix it right then and there I don't like to stall on something I like to come up with a solution and figure it out there's going to be problems no matter what you do yeah no matter where you go I always like to keep my head down stay focused and just get [ __ ] done and you and your sisters are all great entrepreneurs and built amazing companies and Brands and your mom obviously has been you you guys' partner through and through do you think you would be a mom like your mom and have your kids do you want your kids to be entrepreneurs I want them to do whatever makes them happy I already see what they're into in like the Creative Energy from them and I kind of can tell maybe where my two older ones are going to go north for sure feels like a creative Saint feels like a creative the little ones Chicago and S if you ask S what he wants to do he wants to be like a truck driver or anything with a truck that's like been his Halloween costume for like three years so he grew out of it a little bit now it's he's moved from trucks to airplanes yeah we're into train yes shy shy is just a princess so I don't know what what she'll end up being but I definitely see it in north and I think that I won't ever push her to do anything it's whatever she finds her passion in how do you nurture your child that you see so much Creative Energy in how do you just nurture it in a way but protect it also I mean I grew up so normal not in the fame world and couldn't even imagine and I talked to Kendall and Kylie about this all the time cuz they grew up on the show they wanted to or not you know they were born into it like The Truman Show I want to make sure I can protect her as much as I can with her parents being who they are I always think about my kids I'm like my daughter who's the oldest is the creative I definitely want her to go to college but if she didn't I am not the parents who going to go bang on the table you have to but I do wanted to find something she cares about it's more about something you care about right CU my sister Courtney went to college and it was like I went to go visit her and I was like Dad I'm not going like all they're doing is partying how old were you when you went to visit 16 and I'd visit Courtney at school in Dallas and then in Arizona and I was just like Dad this isn't for me all they do is drink like it was just the party let's have like and I'm I was not a party girl it's just not my thing so many parents like it's all they do is prep their kids for college I obviously want them to go as her their mom that didn't finish college but I'm in school now and they're dad that's like The College Dropout how are we going to try to tell our kids to go to to go to college you know I just want them to find their passion whatever it is that they want to do I'll be happy with that what are you thinking about next is it is it pivoting off of skims and building other product lines there are you going to launch new brands what do you what's like your goals and aspirations there I have a brand skin by Kim and that's skincare and I'm launching color Cosmetics through that and fragrance where before I had it in three different places so I now have it in one brand I kkw Beauty kkw fragrance and I was thinking of launching kkw skin but that would be three different platforms three different partners three different Instagrams to run so I just really wanted one Consolidated brand and with skin they don't know that I'm launching color Cosmetics but when they do they'll see it's like all of the basics all of the stuff to just like enhance your skin and fragrance and then I have my sky Partners which is a private Equity Fund are you having f with that so much I've learned so much I just you know what I realized I just love doing things that really teach me so much along the way what's the most the thing that you happiest about learning through the through that process so far Sky Partners is unique because usually we are putting money into a brand but I've been on the receiving end of that where I've from my Brands I've taken money from Investments so I know what it looks like a good partnership and a bad partnership in the process I figured out like I really would be a great partner from a firm standpoint because I know what I would want to talk to the founders about before investing I I would want to spend time with them and see what their DNA is and see why they were driven to start the brands that they did and just help that flourish so I think that is just a different perspective on a fund you looking forward to the part of of having the entrepreneurs point of view and being able to work with them which is the best investment as you know you can get because as you described that bucket over there the people who don't get it I like to call those people [ __ ] because they're like why are you investing in the company if you don't understand it yeah and at the beginning of your career that might be all that you know and so I feel lucky that my mom and I and my sisters have like figured out what those kind of deals look like and now at this phase in my life we have a no [ __ ] policy where we just only want to work with people that we genuinely like that we genuinely want to spend time with and sometimes at the beginning of our career we weren't you know fortunate enough to be able to do you're doing everything so you're taking everything and we learned so much along the way Kim the lawyer where did this come from he like what made you all of a sudden want to do this and then what do you actually want to do with it once you have the law degree I saw on social media a story of a woman that was incarcerated for her first time nonviolent offense and she had the same sentence as Charles Manson and it didn't make sense to me so I reached out to one of my attorneys who worked on the OJ case with my dad and I was like what is it can she not afford a a good attorney I knew nothing about the system I knew nothing I didn't know anyone that had been incarcerated had you ever dealt with anyone through the system no I mean maybe my Dad's friend and maybe Chloe for a DUI for like 7 minutes you know nothing serious so I made some calls was able to get a meeting at the White House and have the president r this case we were able to get her out and I thought that was an easy fairly easy thing to do I didn't realize how tough this was until I started to hear everyone's stories my heart opened up and I thought how do we fix this how do we change this I would go to the White House for big clemency meetings in the Roosevelt room and everyone was talking super fancy and I just remember texting my attorney like what the [ __ ] does this mean and what does this mean and I just didn't like feeling like that Jones called me and was like Hey like I loved meeting with you you know that you can be an attorney in California you need like a certain amount of college credits and I had that and he was like then through my firm we'll get an attorney we'll have someone be your teacher and we'll sponsor you and put you through this program that like four states in the US do and so you have to take two bar exams you have to go through four years instead of three years you tooken one bar exam yeah and so I passed that after a few tries congratulations love them home with a few tries through a lot of the great prison reform work we were able to get the president to sign a bill that um I think so far has let out 20 25,000 people wow you know it starts with the storytelling and making people feel safe that you know there are people incarcerated that don't deserve to be I would love love love to start a firm one day and hire formerly incarcerated people I think they know the system and the law better than anybody and it would be amazing to have a firm that really supported a lot of people and helped get a lot of other people out that's awesome well thank you for coming on and having this conversation with me thank you for having us in your office and I'm going to keep making it till I make it and you are an inspiration I know you will too and good luck with becoming a attorney and whoever you whoever you represent I know you'll do a great job because you care so much about everything you do thank you thank you thank you for having me [Music]
