it's honest moving these kids are from completely different worlds wow yeah when you're cooking jamaican soup know what you call the stuff things but live just streets away now they're opening their doors to each other for three play dates that would never normally happen hello welcome to our home we call it the mud house ow you don't have to be careful in this house alicia there's nothing worth breaking what sets them apart could bring them together i just don't really feel very comfortable stop i've never experienced that before working out what they have in common if you want to you can be my soul mates forever and then maybe we'll marry triplets and become sisters and maybe become new friends guys do not allow boyfriends when you're a muscle are we muslims that's not actually how it sounds eight-year-old brendan lives in birmingham i live with my mom my dog my two brothers and my sister we all have the same hair color you know harry potter now there's a family called the weasleys the people described as that so you got the three crosses and one of them in the middle of jesus like most of his friends brendan attends the local catholic school i have eight friends so i'm kind of popular well not not super super duper popular but i'm kind of a bit popular so where did you get the idea to do that easter jesus on the crucifix i like jesus because he's the savior the world brendan come on time to go put your shoes on now brendan's about to go on the first of three play dates with children he wouldn't ordinarily meet hello i think it'd be nice for brendan to to know about other cultures backgrounds because without that you tend to kind of grow up quite narrow-minded don't you yeah the things i don't have been worried about is how their personality is not sure if they're bad or they're nice or really kind ready yeah okay let's go it shouldn't ruin me take some deep breaths okay up and down okay look at me you all right brendan he's one of life's kind of warriors he usually gets a little bit nervous so off we go then but i think you'll find some common ground with the others ready okay in the neighboring postcard to brendan liv's seven-year-old yasmin my friends will describe me as talented and really friendly i describe myself as wedding crazy because i sing and dance and rap i do acting all the time jasmine lives in a two-bed rented home with her two little brothers and her mum and dad who moved from nigeria 10 years ago we cannot say hundred percent we want to raise our up in african way it's not gonna there's gonna be a little bit of um clash but at home we try to let another look here we parent we come from africa we consider ourselves to be afro-bromish yes mean do you want to help with some washing do i get 50 pounds oh yeah yeah 50 pence i want to grow up as an english person more than an african because i want to be a police woman so i could keep people safe and and then i could be rich one pound fifty one pound fifteen ah i'm a muslim and i pray every single day it's really important because at school once i forgot and and then someone was being mean and then the next day i prayed and then nobody was mean to me that day i'm going on vacation you know you're going on a play date i want yasmine to go on this play them because i want her to meet other children and to see themselves as one to know that there is no color barrier in being friends in being together you're so excited yeah yeah i know i must come and i am i 10 years old nine yeah no you're nine no yeah sure you are no i'm not yes you are yeah i'm 10 i'm winner come your nine hosting today's play day to nine-year-old twins billy and tom being twins i think they've got this very very special bond the pair of them together they just complement each other they love each other they look out for each other the twins go to the local private school and both their parents are lawyers obviously ask what their names are and then maybe show them around the house show them where the bathroom is most important my brother always there is my my first one thank you taking on a tango t what i didn't teach you the tango yes it did no it didn't wash your class those houses are big a bit bigger than our house yeah it's bigger than our house joined together like buckingham palace the beautiful setting a bit nervous so i'm so tired good job over the next few days yasmine and brandon will also host playdates this is tom hello hello hello hi i'm shaw what's your name jasmine jasmine that's a lovely name so all the children get a taste of each other's just with disabilities but i never saw i've met anyone with disabilities i don't know how they'll react to tom actually people who perhaps not really um had any experience of a child with down syndrome they might find it a little bit scary i don't i don't know dude can you stop most of the time it tends to be billy going on the play dates it is a bit upsetting really because when he sees his brother going off he'll say can i go too i want to go too all right guys your new home seat yeah would you rather hide or would you rather find i don't play does he understand what you're saying oh he very definitely understands tom tom i think tom will find play dates scary at first just because he hasn't like here it's a new person he hasn't seen before but when he gets used to it i think we'll be fine mister come here one two three time time mom are you hiding okay two new friends here to play with okay and they've come to see you and play so they don't want you to be anti-social right so why don't you and jasmine look for the boys hopefully nobody can find me whether you're not here i come oh having twin brother with dancing dramas hard work i always have to explain to everybody else what he's saying because sometimes they don't understand everything that he's saying stop it we're looking at it shut go please please no probably stop please just learn please no you can't hold on what i was hiding yeah i was hiding and then suddenly i was hiding through this thing and then something tom came to me he was like he was saying something i couldn't understand what he was saying i'm not sure he's been mean nice or something else i don't always try and say anyway it did upset me because i've never experienced that before in birmingham twins billy and tom are hosting the first of three play dates for two children they've never met before eight-year-old brandon is upset after a clash with tom tom what's happening what are you trying to say to brandon what are you hello hello he was saying something when i was trying to have some reason yeah so he's really chatty he just likes to chat but sometimes because he doesn't talk quite like he doesn't talk quite like you or billy or your husband does he so he's quite difficult to understand yeah brendan is very caring if he cries it's only because something's really upsetting he just wants people to like him he tends to think a lot about things and empathize with with things are you all right what happened a little trip on the stairs oh look brandon wants to know if you're okay yeah okay wow so big yasmin lives in a two bed rented home with her care worker dad and stay-at-home you guys have a bunk bed yeah yeah is this where you sleep yeah what's this of course i really want to keep this oh that's so cool why is it a slap and oh those are awesome these look cool so many books wait yeah you can go upstairs billy and tom's home has three stories and five bedrooms two of which are spare rooms it's a reasonably big house but it's um we think just our great family home it's nice to be able to sort of provide a nice home for the children and to be able to to give them things that they want in my house we don't have any spare rooms i shall remove my brothers because my little brother looks in the bottom but i can my baby brother has a car and in this bedroom there's a horse and and there's lots of toys to play with i don't have that many toys if you have money you can buy whatever you want so jasmine has already started to earn her own money i come up with idea of her doing some chores in the house then i give her 50p and i see that she's loving and she wants to do more she can't stop counting she can't stop counting it because she sees that oh i'm making money i'm doing something what are you doing i'm just going to get some tea ready in a minute are you hungry yeah i'm actually quite hungry yeah should we have some pizza yeah pizza okay yeah sure um are these homemade pizzas they're bought bases and then we're going to put the put the toppings only because my boys yeah yeah that's homemade pizza they don't yeah we're making them ourselves i i don't like homemade pizzas are there any foods you don't like homemade pizzas i don't know how many pizzas who are you going to sit next to jasmine just cheese it's really annoys me like really half of me to eat i don't like it pizza yay oh careful cheers who left up there um you i think as it turns out i've got to finish this pizza i can't leave any bits out i'm really full but i'm gonna challenge myself it's the end of the first play date hello and yasmin's mom is first to arrive hello how are you coming in mommy i want to show you around up here there are two spare rooms if anybody wants a room yeah oh this is and then there's a horse oh that's a good boy the next room oh this massive room hello i've come for brendan come on let's get going thank you you're welcome thanks for being such a good boy thank you oh that's lovely bye you're right did you enjoy yourself yeah yeah beautiful how do you think it went then good wren was funny jasmine was um very kind tom do you want to go to brendan's house i'm first through classmates it's fragile today who did you get on best with on the play date dinner because he was very very nice and respectful and jasmine was what he's kind of nice but after that incident i'm not sure it's been two days since the first play date and now it's brendan's turn to host i'm looking forward to going to see brendan today yeah yeah very great fun isn't it and the asthma is going to be there too this will be one of the first times tom has been left in another home without his mum it's a really big day today it's a massive deal because it's actually going to someone else's house see there have to be some concessions made because there are certain things that he can't do for himself you can't put his shoes on you can't do buttons up it's quite a big ask for a parent who's perhaps not had any experience of a child with down syndrome i'm pretty nervous i might just just load her outside or around the corner maybe just to make sure everybody's okay i'll keep an eye out for him yeah yeah good boy all right i'm going to put a bit of gel in your hair all right you feel happy smile so you excited yeah yeah after falling out with tom on the first play date brendan's worried about taking his turn to host if you're a bit worried or you're thinking i can't really understand what somebody's saying instead of sort of panicking a little bit you could come and find me the doors are colorful yeah the doors are colorful nice colorful dolls the house is not too big but big this is the road boys this is nice look you're going to enjoy it it's nervous no don't be silly i don't know why you're going to be fine don't worry let's go tom guys they come in billy and tom are first to arrive hi brendan good night yasmin is next hello hello hello brendan hello hi later bye slightly anxious if i'm being totally honest hopefully the phone won't ring but it'll be in my pocket in case it does right do you want a game of musical statues brendon's mum kicks off the play date with a game all the children can play together ready got your punches come on guys what are you doing what are you doing tom you're out there i didn't do anything carry on a song you moved it down come on tom come on brendan sit down i think it's gonna be our draw tom stop blaming people he wasn't playing fairly you kept going you're out you're out and when they were standing completely still like to say if i was if i was like excited complete still he would just hit me you're out like that it's really annoying brandon what did your mum do for work my mom's a nurse my dad worked for the um disabled and my mom is just a mom whatever um my mom and dad are both lawyers oh yes where's tom i think i want to point out tom you're right do you want to go to the toilet darling we left it quite late in life to have have the boys so um our boys are ivf babies billy yeah yeah i ask you a favor i don't think tom will go to the toilet so i'm just worried that he needs it would you be able to take him for me darling but the first scan we had it was it was fairly brutally delivered actually there's a problem with one of the babies he's got fluid on the brain he's going to be severely brain damaged it was just it was just it was horrific so when the boys were born and tom had down syndrome we were absolutely thrilled because for us um it was it was it was a known condition he was going to be able to walk talk have a great quality of life it's just never been an issue with just we we're just we're delighted with our family i don't want to go billy is quite thoughtful and he's very very intuitive he's very in line with what people are thinking and feeling you need to go come on tough i have to look after thomas cause sometimes he tries to run away and i'm like trying to stop him so i just have to keep an eye on him up you get please come get up you go into the toilet you know he didn't ask to have a brother with down syndrome at the end of the day it's a big responsibility for a nine-year-old he's just a fantastic little boy you go to the toilet okay if he's feeling sad then i'll look after him no no but he's just re i love him after you we're all the best man in the world at his home in birmingham brendan is taking his turn to host a play date with kids he's never met before yasmin and twins billy and tom are you ready oh no almost having never met anyone with down syndrome brendan has been struggling to communicate with tom and he's gone brendan do you want to speak to tom in the walkie-talkie sure go around the corner say hello hello brendan hello is anyone there hello hello what are you talking about oh wait what do we have here i can't really understand him is he hard to understand fear no because i'm his brother i know exactly what he's saying because i'm used to it he likes everybody even if they're like unkind to him sometimes um yeah yeah finn hello is anyone there hello pendant let's see what we're doing outside you see the dodge yeah thank you so much you want to come sit down lovely time we're going to play a game now is that all right i have a bowl here that's full of questions okay who wants to start anyone b i think who is donald trump oh i hate that guy he's a mean grumpy racist man he hates muslims yes sir and you forgot the most important bit i know he's the american president oh this is a cool one if you ruled the country what's the first thing you'd do um the first thing i would do is jump into an aeroplane the first thing i would do is get a load of slaves that's evil okay okay i'm not getting slaves the first thing i would do is give my money away to charity well that's lovely do you do you believe in your god yeah could you go to heaven not if you don't live inside you'll probably go to hell oh you gotta know seven or what what yazmin's family are muslim i think it's really special to be religious because some people in my class don't have a religion and then they normally get in trouble for doing naughty things or they get bullied by someone whereas brendan is catholic the rich designer are the catholic jewish and christian there's the only foreigner are you christian no are you done i met them what's a muslim when when you can celebrate the same stuff but in a different way uh do you believe in god then yes okay quite shocked because i thought she was catholic or or christian i didn't actually know she was um was a muslim so that's actually that actually quite surprised me right then have you ever played mummies yeah it's not gonna go very well your mom's outside yes hello you ready to come home now no yeah you want to stay here tomorrow to stay here is that all right i would think about that we played this game we had to pick out a card from the box and then it said a question and one of them was who's donald trump he's racist he's mean to everybody oh my goodness you didn't want to come away did you wanted to stay i wanted to stay i'm feeling over the moon actually yeah i felt quite tearful i said the door actually rang the doorbell and and he came running to the door with her and he was he was happy happy as larry absolutely thrilled with life he really was really really relieved so what do you know about jasmine i know how about she's a muslim yeah and what does that mean that means i think apparently they celebrate um like christmas and easter but they they don't celebrate good friday or monday i'm not sure about morning thursday they believe in palm sunday i think that might be something that you could ask her it might be good because if she asked you about baby catholic you could tell her all about it couldn't you i might have to teach you the catholic cry oh right well she might be able to teach you the muslim way then yeah yeah oh sunshine coming out i've got sunshine in my pocket the final play date is taking place at yasmin's house are you looking forward to your played it i'm looking forward to it so what exactly are you looking forward to i'm looking forward to and having fun and playing games i think they're going to love it i really do because they're going to understand the fact that we are we are from africa we we're more relaxed we're more accommodating welcoming yeah i think they're gonna love it have fun and enjoy yourself family live in a two-bed rental on a housing estate i'm drawing a picture of berlin ham's house my house of brendan's house all together so i did my house and it's a bit smaller than brandon and billy and tom's house and billy and mom's house is humongous and it's got loads of space i think they get to live in such a big house because they saved up lots of money are you excited about going on this play date yeah because you're not looking at no you are not might have like african food and my african stuff are you going to try some maybe it might be an experience for him he's not a fussy eater it can be sometimes but things like spices and things what yasmine said that her mum cooks i think he might have a go and have a try if i if i feel well if he feels well enough right are you looking forward to this today yes i wonder what kind of toys you might have yeah does she have muslin toys does she have what's the muslin toy i don't know i don't know i've no idea what i didn't know why i said that it's a catholic toys no well i don't think together this is really cringey as this is the last play date and they may never meet again yasmin is curious to find out more about tom why is it like having time as a brother um it's it's just it's nice to have a different kind of person like he's not the same as us so it's interesting to see what he acts like right i'm younger than you like he's not he's actually older than me but mentally he is just because he has problem with his brain it's a thing called dancing room so what is it about i don't really know it just makes him act different to everybody else i wish i had a brother like yours give me high five you've done really well did you guys had a good time yeah yeah can we have a shoe please can we all go wash our hands one after the other have you washed your hands yes it's almost time to eat they would guys want to tidy up so we can do our salah but as muslims yasmin's family must do something first we can have we can pray pray yeah we we have a time that we pray muslims i'm actually quite interested to see how you pray are you christian no i'm catholic that's catholic oh yeah i know you believe in jesus and everyone prophet jesus yes yes mean do you want to get your hijab why are you wearing that because when you pray have to cover your hair huh wait my friend told me if you put your hood up in mass it's disrespectful i think it's disrespectful you believe in muslims so well it is the same but you just believe different stuff yeah come here legs together together hello ours is very quick why does it take so long no idea i wasn't expecting that to be that long were you speaking a different language when you were saying this is special muslim language not arabic arabic oh my bad it's the third and final play date at yasmin's house ow where did that come from yes i mean yeah would you like to know we're twins tom and billy and brendan i've never tried african food before lantern will be ready in few minutes mmm chicken how is the chicken does it taste nice yeah it's nice it's nice the plantain is very hot it's very spicy yeah it's very spicy really too spicy mild more drink yeah some water please why do you eat on the floor it's a tradition that's how we eat it's a tradition we grow up eating on the floor and we believe there's a blessing when you sit down to eat and we enjoy eating and we enjoy eating on the floor really have you ever tried plantain before no never i haven't usually have chicken nuggets i usually eat um sausages or bacon we don't eat bacon god said that it's the devil's animal bacon comes from pig we believe pig is a dirty animal so you feel you might get poisoned or something i've been baking like 10 million times i'll never go what does bacon taste like it's very meaty i don't know how to explain it i learned about how jews and jewish say god it's like eli eli i think we say allah yeah it's similar you know jesus in islam is called prophet isa so us uh muslim we believe jesus is a prophet it's john the baptist the prophet who is gender but i don't know it's the messenger you know is a prophet as well christians um believe in some stories i think yeah christians believe it's a story catholic believe in all of them and all of them yeah but at the end of the day i believe it's only one god it's just a different way we do it in a different way you're right billy everybody let's give a hand tidy up ready let's do some tidy up so i've got two plates oh my god well done yeah i've got two blades which i'm about to drop well done well done the final play date is almost over dance with me listen let's do it well that's a tangle a tango a tanga how do you do it it's strong what did you enjoy most about the playdate would you like to write it down for me you want to write it down okay i'll give you a paper now you write it down for me we are going to write it down now we got to see a prayer and we got to eat african food i think it's african food anyway um yeah it's african food um what did you think of it nice really nice tom um like the praying oh there's a trespass i think he's trying to say that when we had them then we had lunch here he was really he liked lunch here oh beautiful that's nice i feel a bit proud of my family because we got to show them as much as we could so they could learn new stuff yeah i've accomplished what we set out to do like bringing people together they just keep playing together as one they never see themselves as different kids just want to play hello come here bye we went to the park and played tennis and we had lunch yeah it was really spicy and instead of a table we had it on the floor oh did you go yeah and we used our hands did you yeah do you think that it's been a good thing that you've met these people yeah are you all right yeah do you feel a bit emotional yeah do you it because it's finished yeah you know when you went out to the park how did you cope with getting your shoes on tom i think you put them you put issues on yourself tom i think did you oh right come on man let's go and come and tell that all about it who put your shoes on for you when you went outside myself not yourself myself so you can do it have you been swinging the leg i guess i'm a blue murderer doesn't they so you've absolutely coped you've coped just fine haven't you oh you know what this has been a really good experience isn't it i definitely like to see them again to play with their toys again and to have lots of fun like we did the last time i think i want to see them every day next time bristol children listen up wow hello you guys live in like mansions i feel left out here i'm like a mother to her it's a bit new to me going somewhere without her if you want to you can be my soul mates forever and then maybe we'll marry triplets and become sisters
