saying but hey but when he gives us those gifts it is up to us to be good stewards over those gifts it is up for us to develop and nurture and work hard to bring their gifts to their fullness right and you did just that right and in doing so you created us um for sure sure appreciate it no r b money without jobs there's no r b money without jobs that's not even close yeah we've been we tried no no no no no no no today listen today Casey you get to pop yo this is flowers this is celebration Casey day right now okay then we did that yeah we did that yes you did it was on a mission oh my God and number two we understood the assignment yeah when we first when we first got together we always said we said this we made a pact we made a vow that we're gonna be the baddest baddest group that ever came out wow you know what I'm saying I I made a violic I'm gonna be the most aggressive lead singer that's out there my age you know what I'm saying my era yeah and uh Hey man um I guess like I said we did that you do damn right you did it let's go back to the beginning okay yeah go ahead I want to go back to me being a kid in a church somewhere in Wisconsin I want to say racing I'm saying Wisconsin and we went to see little Cedric and Haley said yes oh man and I watch y'all run down the middle aisle you didn't walk down the middle oh yeah for those of y'all who know anything about church folk court you don't go down the middle that is a no no that's forbidden that's forbidden oh okay you don't walk down the middle all right next time I know the church next time I go to church I remember that no the Usher say you know I'm sure you see in the back like who does instructions for the middle aisle not only did they come down the middle aisle they ran down the middle to add insult to injury JoJo had a bald head and earrings we said what in the world but in the fleshly business is going on in here and y'all proceeded yeah for lack of a better term to talk about gospel music kick ass yeah man we had to do that too man we did that so how did that start give me Casey and the Haley said go take me back to the beginning all right the beginning is like this um well those you that don't know it started out in Baltimore Maryland uh professional singing career started in Baltimore Maryland uh my mom had a group my dad had a group I mean a judge would be around the house singing all the time they had a back in those days they had a Friday night Spade parties I know y'all know about that but anyway when our uncles and aunts they'd be playing Spades and all that man JoJo be in the bed sleep with a they thought we were but we can hear everything that's going on there about one or two every Friday night with my uncles and they all Juiced up now you know what I'm saying so they want to hit a little boy saying so mama will wake us up like it'd be like one sometimes two in the morning wake us up turn our favorite gospel group on which it was the Gospel Keynotes at the time and um me and Joe Joe would be Paul Beasley I will be the lead singer Willie Neal yeah so and Willie Neal was the um one like the the aggressive one the lead singer so they would ask us to make a single song I remember one night I got bullheaded you know I'm saying I got Bullhead I didn't want to sing man so believe it or not my mother my mother I love her for doing this you know some people these days might ridiculous for doing it but my mother she went upstairs got her leather belt talk about the belts talking about let the belt amen that belt got me singing today she said boy yeah if you don't go downstairs and sing them songs but them people want you to sing and mine now they was giving me a joke about 50 cents the same she said if you don't get your tail downstairs you took that belt man she used that belt to this day I never been shame or shy to open my mouth to sing for nobody so fast forward like I said my mother had a group um from Baltimore a female group and my father had a male group in Baltimore quartet and um my mama told my dad she said um I I I think you need to put Cedric in that group at that point red that boy red she said he read it she said he ready so she asked me you want to be in your daddy group man yeah I want to be in the group at 11 years old yeah 11 years old then so my daddy let me um in the group I went to a couple of rehearsals and we did that First Gospel you know back in the day calling programs you know we did a program so when I did that man and um my Uncle Rich was the manager of my dad grew his uncle so um he told my daddy oh yeah that's gonna be our little show stopper yeah we're gonna keep him so by that time like I said my mama had a group she had a killer band so um my mama told my daddy look I want to um take him out um your group and I'm gonna get my band because there's more contemporary you know that players young guys she said I want to take him out your group and I'm gonna get rid of my band and let them play for Cedric so dad was like now we see how it is I think the group my daddy group kind of figured what was going on because for me Daddy and JoJo got to rehearsal Believe It or Not tank man they had our papers waiting on us saying we're fired oh yeah I was getting kicked out yeah we got kicked out when they found out that you know little Cedric in the Haley thing was about but not only did they kick you and JoJo they kicked your daddy out too and yeah hold on what you and your son yeah you ain't your sons out the group just because of that so my dad said okay cool we got this they handed you papers they handed us papers at rehearsal when we walked in that's crazy I cried like a baby man look at 11 years old getting fired come on now something I love to do what to do but dope it was God's plan of course yeah it wasn't their plans because at the next day here we are my mom and dad you're telling me when I'm gonna we got my mama said Timmy down Timothy I'm gonna play for you now so I'm like half because Timmy know they was young it was funky you know so that cool that was the birth a little Cedric and the Haley singers signed the gospel record label which is air records now so um got that deal 12 years old did I record man and little Cedric and Haley sings blew up I mean we blew up in the quartet field man I was like the they would call me the um Michael Jackson of gospel and during that time yeah and during that time my rival was a little boy from Washington DC he had his group from DC so Baltimore had a little boy which is a little Cedric and that little boy I'm talking about I mean we went neck to neck neck to neck man one night was his night next night was not my night that little boy or Johnny Gill oh wow I didn't know that yeah man me and Johnny talk about that all the time we talk about it all the time Johnny will come to Baltimore he'll try to make it hard for me in my town it's okay all right I gotta go to I gotta go to DC yeah come see you so this is like 12 13 14. so he been growling for a long time oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah man Johnny we've been in the game together in the game long time man long time ago yeah yeah yeah yeah man Johnny was way back man 40 something years ago so was your father in in the Haley singing that Haley singing yeah he came he got him some songs off tattoo off the albums too you know what I'm saying you know um but then Jojo Jojo was like this he's still like this to this day he don't let y'all see it we had to beg JoJo to sing hmm we had to beg JoJo Danny had to do it now she knows that but one of the coldest vocalists who ever lived yeah yeah and then JoJo then he got into it man and um he had this couple songs on the albums and all that but JoJo always knew he would tell them I mean I'm gonna do that man that's that's Cedric man JoJo is more like he was a rough he was a roughneck Joe the one to go outside and play football while I'm in rehearsal 10 hours a day in the base hot basement right after school got to go down to the basement and rehearse for the album and so JoJo outside playing and if he got a song he'll come in and do his little son go right back outside and play I'm still in there because I'm so I'm I'm hungry at the age of 12. I'm hungry man but uh it all worked out good so that's how the Haley singer started man what was your first song that took out took off uh Jesus saved and then born again with the second one that's it that was it right there and of course that we call it drive oh you've been what that was I draw you draw your cross um we did those we did three um albums on the little Cedric and Haley singers and then the family moved back to um North Carolina and then what made you guys move well what made us move is really I think I think my mom and parents was ready to move back down south because we had lived in Baltimore for what wow we lived in Baltimore for like 13 years you know I'm saying so um but they wanted to move back down south and of course they took the kids with us so we went down there and still we still had and the Haley singers going we still was traveling the group had busted up but we still you know hired some new new musicians and backup singers and everything for little Cedric so we're still going so and then and it was God man it was God because I was I was I left North Carolina and went to uh Baltimore I was gonna do a reunion with little Cedric and Haley singers with the original uh the original uh members and what age is this uh this is a 17. it's like just like 17 18 one of them so while I'm while I'm in Baltimore Jordan didn't go with me so while I'm in Baltimore JoJo plays a song for me over the phone by this time JoJo you know he didn't go back to Baltimore with me so I'm listening on the phone like Jojo um who is that it's your man it's just it's this guy ain't done man we've been doing music together man you can't be in this group nah nah this just means done this man done stuff just me and Don stuff yeah so then I go back to now I go I meant before I go to Baltimore I'm in our rehearsal Hall with little Celtic and Haley singers so some girls that came over to visit us just before I went to bummer I skipped all that but some girls brought some guys to our studio I was dating one the girl but calling myself dating and um JoJo was talking to one of them so they brought up they said you know we want to meet y'all some um we want y'all to meet some brothers you know they they got their own church and and they doing their thing they they tight on the music man they good y'all need to meet them yeah who are they so when they walked in and they brought the guys in so all that first thing I see is my girlfriend and got these guys behind her so immediately yeah you're not feeling no I'm not feeling it I'm not feeling it so and I see one of them go in the studio where the recording part was at the studio we had and I hear a piano playing now by this time me and this guy that Joe was in the room with man his brother is about to go at it I mean guns down really guns down so anyway we like he's like yo what's going on man like yo you tell me what's going on y'all walking with my girl man I mean who who who who are y'all who are y'all so then I hear it I hear a keyboard a keyboard playing and I hear or brother singing I'm like hold up I hear my voice I had my brother voice but who is that playing that keyboard and his brother said that's what I was trying to tell you we're the guys that they wanted to introduce us to y'all I'm like who are y'all who I got [Laughter] and that's my brother Don I saw y'all are the great boys like yeah yo man we just missed the girl yeah yeah I see what's going on now yeah we're God we're God I see you moving so by that time you know then we met each other we met each other hung out a little bit and then like I said now I can go back to going to Baltimore because I thought that wasn't gonna work out like that's gonna a fluke so I go to Baltimore I'm trying to get my goo back together JoJo calls me and um and they're playing something on the on the phone I said yo that sounds good was that he said yo that's me and done man I said for real y'all did that he said yeah I said yeah man it's tight I said man that's that's I like that bro you don't even think about it stay in Baltimore get your Haley singers together yeah exactly what he said I got my own thing and it ain't the church yeah so as a nah man so immediately immediately I call my mom I call my daddy that's somebody to come on I'm ready to go home I told her Haley singers hey look y'all um I'm going back to Charlotte this ain't gonna work you know I can't tell you why I can't tell you what I'm talking about it but you'll hear about it but you'll hear about it and by that time I got home man and by that time Jojo Jojo he eat it JoJo heated and then all of us you started yelling so then but JoJo really didn't want you in the group no and Devonta didn't want Dalvin I love this yeah this is great if I didn't want diamond so JoJo made her but JoJo wanted Alvin Devonte wanted me oh wow so JoJo was like this now Jojo Jojo playing that card if you want my brother Lee saying you got your brother in the group yeah yeah yeah yeah it's done and just vice versa so if you want Delvin in yeah I mean Casey yeah I knew Cedric I need Cedric yeah Cedric yeah so we got together man talked about it there we go we don't we started doing demos man we were demo at the church man we would do demos at the church like time we share no songs like that and like the chords like the chords Devonte a lot of that stuff was written in church a Devonte dad Church man so um I guess Devonte dad got tired of it you know he got tired all that secular views have been played at his church so what we did we didn't tell me and children didn't tell our parents if we had a basement right and this thing you know divided my dad and my mother they see Devonte loading in like 15 10 or 15 keyboards hooking everything up in their basement you get what I'm saying by that time they didn't know we they didn't know he was doing music but they didn't know he was doing it for because my daddy said he said I don't know what that boy doing down there but all I hear is a lot of that sound you know that sound is slapping on the keyboard but he have his headphones on Yeah by that Devonte was doing jodeci's demo he did that we did that for like a year we got our son we got like all y'all Jodeci yet though or what like when does when do you guys when we find out we were Jodeci when we when we when we knew that we had something and we were standing there we were sitting in our mother our parents Yard Man and so I came up with Brothers I think diving came up with some things and then and then um Devonte was like Hey man won't we just put our name together man um Jojo Devonte Calvin KC yeah we should put Joe D and C um Jodeci man Jodeci Jersey Jersey oh no man that sounds too biblical or something but but at the end of the day we had a vote we had a vote was it Jodeci it is then we Jodeci mind now we didn't get no never did no talent shows in Charlotte people didn't know nothing about Jodeci and Charlotte first person in first city that knew about Josie was New York and that's when we got ideas so like I said we got our demos and uh one night we was like man what's the money you got I got twenty dollars Advantage but I'll get some money from my dad man I get some money from my dad and all that that's what we're going to do we're gonna go to New York I mean y'all gotta go to work and I gotta go to work man this is like oh you had a job at the time it was my dad yeah I had a job my dad man doing Roofing yeah I'm doing Roofing man with my dad man so anyway um we're going to New York Dad it's a boy you know you gotta go to work you know you gotta go to work Monday don't you I said Daddy I'm sorry uh we we gotta go we gotta go and then we should actually remember we was about to pull off and my mama she just crying so hard man on on the front porch but Daddy's still firm yeah it's all right now if you go to New York and you know you got a job to come you know coming Monday that you come back here it was I respect that yeah so now the whole trip up to New York I'm thinking about my dad saying like yo if this don't it just don't work I've been spending time with this Josie thing now so and we got the carriage man we said a good prayer we said a good prayer before we got on Highway 85 going up north absolutely we said a good prayer Tank Man we never looked back after that prayer man and um when we got to Virginia when we got to Virginia we stopped at a truck stop we said hold up damn you can't go there man we need an image man we need an image we went to the truck stop man and when we got to New York and we rode around New York man for like 12 hours 12 hours fine trying to find somewhere to sleep and by this time you know we we on Lower we're low on funds now so the first hotel that we saw by listening to a LL Cool J song with the Bristol Hotel room 5 15. yeah I'm here you know that was a prostitute Hotel I had no idea yes I was waiting to see if you knew or not because I was going to say damn that's what you did Hotel so anyway we get dead now it's all it's all yo it's all ran down it's like like a oh man it looks real dangerous and all that so we were like nah man we staying here we ain't staying here that's what we did we wrote to this drove all went to the city you know we signed up found our Best Western in Queens and uh cheapest hotel a night was a hundred and something dollars so we took that whole hundred and some dollars for that room for that one night mine now we ain't got nowhere to go the next day we ain't got no money for gas to go home back to North Carolina that's normal we got a room to sleep in you know what we did we got them Yellow Pages we got the yellow pages from the phone book man and um and we looked up uh MCA records on there the address to Uptown MCA records and we was like yo y'all this is what we're gonna do we're gonna find we're gonna find MCA records man it's in Manhattan 1775 Broadway enough to get that yeah so anyway hey man when we got there like this is it y'all we're gonna look for and see records so we rode around New York found MCA records and we got to the lobby and the receptionist was like who y'all here to see we like we don't know we just want somebody to hear our music that's uh yeah we saw Andre real pass by we saw Heavy D passed by you know we like we Star Struck so um and then we waited in the library y'all for like six hours to you know they were great clothes and they said y'all still here yeah we're still here and then Kurt Lily came and said I think y'all come to my office y'all come to my office if you got him Kurt office he I guess they had a party that night or something before and he fell asleep on our demo and so we like yo get up yeah get up you got you got to hear this you got to hear this yeah you know I'm telling you now he's not gonna like this he's not gonna like this so we're like how you know get the man get the boss baby we was cocky with it yeah from day one yeah yeah so Drake came in and by the time when Drake came in and no shots no diss to nobody but Kurt was like no we we we ain't looking for nothing like that we looking for something like this we need y'all need to be sounding like this like I said man no shade no shots of nobody man yo I kept putting Jeff red man you know because he was on the label yeah yeah he was there he was one of the time you get what I'm saying don't you I don't know Jeff red thank you I don't do this I found loving and all that Jeff red anyway that ain't us that ain't us nah we ain't sounding like that we got our own sound man we got our own sound we need no producers none of that so as I'm telling y'all the uh um boss man like just get your boss say when it got Dre came in there the song um Kurt was playing was come and talk to me that's the song he was playing yeah then he played stay then he played yeah then they play um I'm still waiting oh my God Danny oh this on demo what oh man then he played back in the day every moment that was I know oh I just don't hear it oh this is on the demos right so Dre like Dre like hold up y'all tell me that's y'all yeah that's us yeah what'd you tell me yes I don't believe it No Doubt okay okay believe this you know I stood up yeah I started singing the verses come on yeah I got the pudding with me that's okay that's good we started saying we had a little jealousy you know did I Jodeci um look look um thing we'll be doing singing about judgment when you think of Joseph yeah did that and then you know I did come and talk to me I sung a little song and on you know and by that time heavy came and rest in peace yeah happy suckers head in the door and he said Drake come here from what I hear have you told Dre if you don't sign them get them by that time all I know Dre he came back in the door I said yo um so where y'all staying we are staying there we ain't got nowhere to stay man you know we we got the money the same guy that was sleeping on us is and no man Kurt Willie he said Kirk um pay for the rest of the room the hotel room for the rest of the route group uh for the rest of the week take care of this group for the rest of the week um uh come on y'all we're going out to dinner and Kurt by the way you assigned to them for the rest of this week first you I know you don't like them yeah since you can't hear she said you're going here for the rest of the week for the rest of your life so by that time of them you know we had our dinner and um and uh get back to the hotel yo we gave Kurt Woodley hell man yeah we gave him hell that day that whole week man it was like we've been in the business for years yo we want this [Laughter] when I get back to the hotel I jumped up up and down on my bed man it jumped up and down in my bed yeah everybody man we was crying and all that and um I call him a pop that's a daddy we got a deal you gonna give me that truck I want yeah yeah you know they gotta they sent by Celestine which was a lawyer for the label so they sent them down with us back to New York I mean back to North Carolina and [Music] um got some return on term agreements made up and all that and on Devonte uh fathers and his lawyer looked over our parents looked over said yeah it's legit it's legit it's a legit deal they they said they want to do business with y'all Sons uh I think it's a good look if you're talking today and then we took the World by storm man storms but it was it was it was that it was that commitment to what we was doing and that's why I tried to tell a lot of young acts if you listen to our story if you listen to our story real good it's a story uh for young guys that was that was committed to what we was doing and never taken no for an answer number one number one we came up from the church number two we was God fearing yes you know what I'm saying and um and we know that's right I look at a lot of groups in our tank I'd be like yo and they're getting they're getting these millions sold instantly without working putting that putting see I came from like I said the ruler you know what I'm saying the gospel you know what I'm saying from the dirt floor from the dirt floor man it's still going yeah you know it's still going like I say man they lucky these days man that was it was just a different time difference I remember the first time our group saw y'all y'all was singing background for Father MC yeah I think it was uh Jack the rapper yeah I think it was Jack the rapper and we were on we were on MCA our group was on MCA and um and we were performing you know they would have those different halls and a different thing where everybody's performing yeah yeah and I forgot which one we were at but I remember we we liked Father MC like you know we was kids so we we loved Father MC so we're like oh we want to go see Father MC we begging our dad to take us and we walked in and y'all singing the backup for and I just remember me and my brothers looking at each other like man who the is that right because obviously we went to go see Father MC because yeah hopping at the time yeah you treat it and be like who is that singing though cause for us you know our group the neutrons we didn't come from the church so we hadn't heard Church only church we heard was like old school they played at three in the morning when BT used to turn that's the only gospel we knew yeah yeah so the kids like us yeah yeah and we're like man what what the hell is that yeah and we just it always stuck with me yeah and from that day forward it stuck with me until y'all dropped y'all on music and then was like oh that's them saying yeah this is the next wave yeah yeah man you know I mean it's just you know and and then we got the deal you know we still had to make some changes stuff like I said earlier we were used to like Devonshire we used to um doing stuff is sub fathers of production so and so what what Andre did which was a good thing it was a good call when he called Albion [Music] you know I'll be came in because he knew he had the picture we had the picture already what Dre did by getting all in and he like on some of the cuts Pro co-produced with Devonte what he did was put that picture in a frame you get what I'm saying that's that's all he did put that picture fine tuning yeah that fine-tuning the little things it needs yeah because Quincy Jones effect Quincy Jones there you go and then he had his night and day you know I'm saying that he already knew how to make records there you go there you go Devonta he he knew exactly what he's doing he knows yeah but like I said you want the you know you know put that put a coat and put shellac on it yeah you know what I'm saying that's all straight in that's what I'll I'll be did and um and Al and Devonte worked there you know they bumped head but of course everybody had that ego but then he got you know and um you just had it like I gotta listen we told her you got to listen man you got to listen to him man and now I had the resume too it wasn't like he just put y'all with some random person exactly right exactly and um so I know and then when Al came in with that mature lyric like mine now everybody think that I'll wrote Forever My Lady well I did but after my lady was already written like I said we had it before we got a deal what Al did was he put that um that verse in there you know that that kind of messed everybody at first it messed my head up when he said so you're having my baby we like whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa y'all wasn't ready to give him a baby yet I just got my deal normal child support why is this the way and that's that's that really y'all that's what really really really I think set us apart from a lot of young nobody weren't talking about that nobody want to say yeah nobody was saying I mean they might have sang they might have been saying somebody's having my baby yeah right right somebody might have been having that conversation but they weren't saying right behind it and it means so much to me right yeah yeah sure 19 when somebody having your baby trying to figure out uh you sure yeah you sure sure yeah I saw what's the name come through here you know no y'all used to talk you know what I'm saying it don't mean that much to me it don't mean that much yeah because all the rest of the lyrics man Devante Penn is sick with the stage come and talk to me you know I'm still waiting until you and I's and my heart belongs to you to feelings and the freaking use now that's all D's hold on let's stop right here let's stop right here let's stop right here okay gotta love his sister well I was like okay I don't know why they singing this hard on this Up Tempo I love it I love it and then well that forever my ladies yes because there's a period where as new artists you know you're opening you're doing venues and maybe it's just you for radio shows maybe two 100 people 300 people yeah but there's got to be a moment where when that forever my lady hits that you see the difference from that 200 and this small radio shows and them openings too the venues getting absolutely yeah you're going to the thousands yes you know you know where I'm going and they I want to know what he bought yeah but I got it come on man I want to know when you first saw what I what did I get I got a uh I got a I got a BMW man see what it was I got a BMW JoJo got a bmj diving got a BMW and they got [Laughter] broke off from that and then we did our own Jodeci tour which was Jodeci and Mary and I think it was on that 12 with us I think and I want to say biggie but I I don't want to see because we did yeah I think it was Biggie and then open it yeah wow yeah they were they was openers yeah Jodeci yeah man we Chelsea was that Jodeci we were that wow it was crazy so give me give me the give me the the the the puff play in oh and puff okay give me that goes back to when Paul was doing when puff was um intern so puff was like is it was to the street I'm gonna tell you how I gotta love came in and uh puppet as Dre yo you told Drake yo you shouldn't because Dave was going to come out first single he would come come and talk to me uh Forever My lady so puff told him no Dre don't do that I wouldn't do that if I was you I would put them out with god of love that song Gotta Love man so Dre like why would you do that we didn't even want to do that and why he said because the video concept could be like they could be dressed like you know you know that in the hood you know with the boots the little thuggish or whatever yeah so that Gotta Love was set the world up you know because they didn't want to even said that Dre really he really he told me I don't want y'all we told Drake we don't want like no Boys to Men not no you know distant boys man we didn't want it we didn't want it like that even pop said yo man you don't want them like boys men in soups you don't want them in soups man he's the puff told that yo man when I see when I see them man I want to see them like four of my homeboys on the corner yeah singing the girls and stuff like that you know on the stoop singing the girls you know so Puffs I think you should come out with Gotta Love first in the videos to be like just to have only like some hip-hop gear on so I thought Puff's gonna get five for that man but then after we heard what pup idea was yeah Dre I think we should go Gotta Love man so Gotta Love work absolutely and what it really did is set a tone so the world could see okay it put everybody on notice yeah this this how they're gonna be looking yeah that's how they're gonna dress they're gonna have on their boots they're gonna have on their vest they can Shades in their baseball caps yeah so um that really set the world up but once again I think you said it like when when they saw us singing from my lady they probably said oh that's that group that got on the yellow and uh in that video with the boots and stuff okay we get it that's them and that really set us apart from from Boys to Men and whatever group stuff was coming at the same time which is genius though because most time in this business and we all notice we've been in this game a long time when something works everybody does the exact same there you go because it's the cheat code yeah they can get you it can get you in yeah it can get you in it might not keep you in right but for you guys to be the polar opposite um in it too in it being polar opposite is that now you're immediately in a conversation with some guys that are already selling millions of Records so it's like now it's like oh what's what's getting ready to happen yeah yeah now it's two it ain't just one there you go we got some guys over here yeah they come in the bad boys army The King The Bad Boys RV so we got the good guys in the back who who who you want to go see all right right who you want to go see no that's great and I'm a church kid so I'm like so did you know of obviously you knew of little Cedric but did you connected no that little Cedric and the Haley singers which you didn't know that had no idea had no idea until I got out of high school and did some research and was like well because I got six sets you know what I'm saying so once I made that connection I said that's why it makes so much sense to me yeah so for me I started being Jodeci in church okay oh wow I started sounding like y'all in church I would go to visit in churches and play and you know add my Devonte chords and all that maybe like this you like a one-man Jodeci all right God bless you Hallelujah because because it's as much as I loved Boys to Men Who were you know I mean ultimately just talented to just oh my God freaking charts right yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah I I was drawn so much to that feeling that was so familiar to me the core structure the vocals Arrangements the arrangement yeah and how that like I come forgot I come from quartet there you go Baptist kojic and I was like that's in there and we definitely coach it oh that's in there definitely coaching so it it it it made my soul happy yeah I want the shout there you go well KC was shouting I wanted to shout when that music came home y'all don't hear this y'all don't lift no offering if you change a few um some words if you change words out song you can have an altar call yeah instrumental you can let me ask you a question did decommissioned have any most definitely commission yeah the Winans yeah and then you know and I had my quartet groups you know the gospel King knows yeah the violinaires um you name the quartets man I was a hardcore quartet but then like in the um late 80s I started listening to like like I said commission and the wine and you know those cats clock sisters you know and I'm like okay and that's what we did but the thing about it when we got an r b when we got an r b man we were have George you really really really got a sound JoJo was a um the deal and Babyface fanatic okay that's in the late the late uh 90s and man Devonte was fanatics of God hmm so what we do is if Jordan sleeping in one room this is at my mom's house now JoJo sleeping one room he'll go to sleep with all Babyface in the um in um the deal stop playing in his cassette player I mean Devonte in another room we're going to sleep and listen to Teddy Teddy there so I'm in the bonded okay I'm just entities I'm gonna do some Teddy you do some iron hmm okay so this is all late 80s yeah the ones Commission guy and deer and the deal yeah yeah it all makes sense and then we made and plus we had of course we had Jodeci it was so aggressive yeah if you listen to our music you can hear it man it was like I tell people all the time everybody's like yeah it's you hear them Jodeci harmonies I said yeah I hear you yeah but that's your way of saying you down here because he's just nicer to me I'd be like man this ain't no jokes yeah here's two here's two things right because it's it's two two things first of all you can try the arrangement right but the but the vocal the KC and and JoJo vocal are so distinctive that she'll never tone you'll never never have that combination of tone yeah make it what it is and two the misconception of anybody from groups to anybody trying to be Jodeci is that they confuse the fashion with the music with the music y'all make love y'all was making love Yeah man y'all was screaming that was I meant to start treat them like they're supposed to be true y'all are screaming that though screaming that screaming forever my ladies scream and stay those are all love songs [Laughter] yeah straight Church what foreign yeah yeah and then the way we stack our stuff how many stuff give me the stacks come on give me a sec because y'all on the on the board y'all don't tape yeah y'all on real too man y'all y'all using the whole y'all using too ain't no flying no vocal no no no you know flying over um I want to say on one note give me how many how many times you stack One Note One Note One Note the melody Devonte will have a stack on one note at least man this might sound crazy but man Devonte will have us One Note just one note close to 10. 10 stacks on one note I believe every word you've seen yeah I believe every word you're saying yeah yeah during y'all Stacks are y'all trying to match the note are y'all just singing it with a different feel every time because that's the other thing people go in and you stack and stack and stack and you're trying to make all the notes sound identical but you know when you listen to Jodeci sometimes we'll be like would do like uh we do like five like tonight would you like five you know six times tonight you know just yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah so just fill in those yeah those Sonic holes you know y'all ain't stacking enough that's what he just said you're not stacking enough enough Stacks ain't no ass on your backgrounds that's what he's saying now as far as I as far as um uh Harmony's Arrangements see Devonte plays chords all five fingers yeah yeah so we gotta me and Joe the guy to sing every note every note that he's playing and then JoJo going there he's that's one thing about JoJo he's so creative JoJo just dropped something in there even when we record he'll just drop something something yeah fall off of it yeah yeah yeah keep that yeah next thing you know that's a Harmony yeah and that's a Harmony so you know man sometimes we have like what the reasons John we had like some people lose use five part harmonies man we will make it a way we can use six or seven absolutely because like mine now we got the regulars we got the regular notes my mind Devonte I'm gonna play five chords you know he's gonna play five chords on on the harmonies and then like I said the extra stuff that JoJo would do and um you know that that it's just you got to be one of our sessions man you'll be like whoa you know the first time I got a I got a just maybe even a slight glimpse of it was working with genuine okay okay he wouldn't know he he came from that school and I and I watched him stack stack Stacks stack Stacks you got everything dude and he was like he was like I was like I was like you're doing the same note again he said nah I'm doing it a little different this time watch when I watch what I do at the end I'm like oh okay yeah okay he said all right now give me give me give me three more I'm gonna whisper these see I just tell you that yeah yeah what are you doing yeah you got a whole thing before she came from the school oh absolutely she came into school so that was my first Glimpse yeah that much stacking yeah yeah Timberland too yeah it came from the school okay here we go like I said we did that no no you can say that as many times as you want to today um I want to get to um I'm gonna get the Diary of a Mad Band Come on come on I want to know first why Diary of a Mad Band why that title um Diary of a Mad Band um I didn't like it at first then I started realizing who came up with it we met Devonte um but that second hour we was we was mad what were we all mad about just mad just mad was it was it okay so what was it was it connected to the business no it wasn't no it wasn't connected to the business it was just we were just mad we wanted to be like yo okay be getting out of that field my leg okay people think we solved we're mad I was trying to get mad that's right the album cover like that with shirts off with davanti and Darwin and we had to boost and stuff off and all that all that pushing on we were just well I was consider myself a Mad Band mad don't mean you know we have attitude mm-hmm I mean we got attitude but yeah we're gonna let y'all know we more than just the arms yeah you know we Falcon rollers too we mad yeah you know what I'm saying we got attitude y'all had tattoos and yeah we didn't care we was mad we didn't give a damn we wanted to change the face of r b songs we put on that album man man we didn't care we were mad and we didn't give a damn we were taking no prisoners Jodeci didn't give a damn about man so was that the first time that you guys were in really in a real Studio then because the first album was for the most part y'all demo well we got I mean y'all really was like well the first album was done in the real the demos are done in Charlotte right what we did was summon stuffed Avanti did we we went to hit Factory okay before my lady we did that we did that and we did a whole album in the studio but our demo was done because he divided would take how y'all whatever y'all do he flew it up flew it into the big board yeah they had to hit Factory yeah yeah I would do that in pre-production and all that but um but we recorded in the full studio hit Factory we did all the album hit project itself for the last one so with the sessions Wu-Tang [Music] definitely I can only imagine in New York man we was yo we had it yo it was a party every night I mean every night because mine now that price is up we can do whatever we want to do hey Dre we don't even need you on this session don't come yo Dre band don't let them come wait time out time out time it was mad the president control nobody nobody just just uh y'all we're at the studio we're getting we're gonna be there we get there are y'all there are y'all there you got to leave we ain't coming y'all there we ain't coming I like where this is I'm getting a t-shirt that say that don't you didn't like if y'all there we ain't coming exactly man because Josie like I said mine now we had this attitude when we got in devonte's car to go to New York we're going to do this ain't nobody gonna stop us yo pop I'm not going to work I'm going to get a deal yeah yeah took all that we took all that yeah with us man and to this day you know we're gonna do one but Mike and again man we were young we we was young man and we we was out there y'all I can't I can't lie you know I said I'm 53 now yeah I was but in my early 20s when Joseph came out we did a lot of dumb you know but I don't regret none of it it was all I hate to say necessary but it was all necessary it was necessary it was all par for that course if you want if you want longevity man if you want longevity in this game man you can't dwell on what you did on the past man you gotta you gotta celebrate it oh my God we did that and we still here like still yeah yeah because you you and of course you never know this at the time because you're just doing you're just doing the work yeah you're just doing what you feel you just you know all the years of of tutelage you know from from from being a kid and all that it's just it's the culmination of it is just it's becoming what it is yeah and little do you know by taking that control and by owning it the way that you did and making it so personal to you putting that stamp on it that you make one of the most influential r b albums of all times of literally all times top to bottom top to bottom you're right you can't talk about r b without saying Diary of a Mad Band just if we're making Mount Rushmore of r b albums yeah yeah cannot yeah you're right so thank you for that that my heart belongs to you man there's a beast I'm gonna start kicking that's the new no you can't come now that's stranger now you know what that is now tank now you know that's straight Church man oh my God say whatever you are I love it I love it I love it kidding me I love it man I used to study it's a study at top to bottom sit on my keyboard and study Devonte stand there and sing study you study JoJo see JoJo was more Jojo in the terms of a singer was more of a singer that you can understand he was JoJo was more on the structure of what we know singers to be right but he had that quartet High register yeah that set him apart from absolutely everybody yeah right exactly but you have an unorthodox vocal it's not it's not a it's not a pattern that any like Runner uses any technical Runner yes you made up your own pattern yeah like first you do yeah then you have your own run pattern right and if that ain't enough then you go to what we like to call that liquor and you get it to the just yeah good night yeah yeah good night somebody gave me life somebody got me but that's the other part though who's the somebody who's somebody because it's not just a judge but somebody I don't know I don't know somebody somebody help me somebody gave somebody somebody anybody anybody everybody everybody say yeah say yeah yeah man because um all that Squall and stuff that was that quartet raised up man you know nobody yeah but nobody doing this no I mean if you heard it you have been listening to which I know they probably wasn't at my age you had to be listening not r b you had to be listening to cats like back in the day if you heard if it's not gospel you had to be listening like the Bobby womacks and the Johnny Taylor yes yeah and they wasn't checking for that not in my age not at that time put him close no not in that time and to a lot of people now you just say um um okay you don't think you you sing too you sing too hard man would you sing too hard I don't think hard enough I wish you would tell James Brown oh man singing too hard doesn't feel good feel good this is so how do you preserve as hard as you sing well um I try to get as much as rest as I can and and never keep my mouth shut I'm always talking you know you don't do vocal rest not really not really see like I I would do some warm-ups you know I know how to do what but I'll do that at home I'm on the road I'm straight let's go but it's an it's a it's something it's a breakdown of the vocal to where that's what sustains it the fact that it's not in perfect condition and it can you know like back in the day they say the old Chevys or them old cars run 200 miles yeah engine always sound like it might gonna give out but it don't it don't that's the kind of vocal that is that can work under any condition and so before I had this little pretty voice you know what I'm saying I was like this almost rhyme late night guy and then after listening to y'all I need some of that because my soft vocal wouldn't survive that's true it wouldn't survive so I had to I had to I had to kind of wreck my vocal into a place to where it could survive in whatever condition your weather yeah in any way yeah you had to strip my vocal down yeah there's a lot of comfort tank you can test for this man when you're singing or when you're used to singing every every week in church hard yeah you know what I'm saying you're singing like I used to do like when I was in the Haley singers man we were saying we sing and plus my daddy was aggressively single my mama was aggressively singer so I really been trained for them yeah my mama was the one that taught me how to um sing for my diaphragm you know what I mean so um and plus singing in church every Sunday so I mean singing hard I was the lead singer doing all I was I was the one it'll be a part in the in the um in the program of the performance I'm the one wrapping up the crowd somebody out there don't know what I'm talking about and stuff like that that that's that's that thing to me I'm talking and singing to the audience so um you know and I carry that I carry that with me just jealousy man I'm not gonna never never it's gonna be with me always man okay let's let's move on um show the hotel after party okay laughs Masterpiece right absolutely that's where I got tagging interludes intertwining with songs from I swear it came from it's where I got it all those I I went on screaming online the other day saying that I had the best interludes of all times and everybody kept saying Jodeci and I was like no I have the best interviews of all times and now that you're here I'm gonna tell the truth y'all it's fine you know Sam's just talking online uh I learned I learned from y'all yeah that's who I learned from right I want to ask about a pivotal moment in in in in for you I'm sure and as you know as a stand watching you guys I'm watching the Get on Up video and there's no Devonte mm-hmm and I'm like what is going on and I'm like is my is my group is my group done nah nah what is going on what happened with that man it's crazy man we just told me that yesterday come on Devonta is so what can I say Divinity is it's like he thought be honest he thought get enough was too happy it was a happy song yeah and if I don't like that happy stuff you know I'm saying and I'm like no I'm trying to get deep man I'm telling you man this sounds so happy man sounds too happy man I guess it wasn't I don't know you're a producer I guess it wasn't like it wasn't like the the Devonte didn't produce that one nah did he write it did he write it no no yes we know exactly where you're going that ain't my pretty much right I didn't want to say it dude when you start putting out Devonte music I'll be back yeah I'll be back I'll be back but we told her your description nice son but I'm going to the video even man is like to be quite Frank d mine is like he's so wrapped up into his producing so it's like you know you don't care about nothing but producing you get what I'm saying and um D is he's just d man he's been that way his whole career so for you guys this wasn't no this wasn't enough got you no no because for us it was like the world is over when we first came over when we first came on when Josie first came out man um Advantage always said he said hey man when Josie blow up man he said he said Casey man I think you should do Your Own Thing JoJo used to do young thing now I'm used to do young thing man and he got he's a man be honest with y'all man I really want to I really want to stick to producers but not he said let's don't do nothing man until we like we had to Hype we need to be as Jonas because we know whatever we do is just it's a tree whatever that Jodeci do besides you know whatever we do besides Josie Joseph is the root of that tree we're just to Branch off yes you know what I'm saying of that tree yeah so long as none of us don't forget this is this is what home right this is home Josie it's the home I can do whatever I want to do you know but I know home is Jose I know about the root of the tree and like I'm doing a solo album right now I love it I'm I'm proud of myself and I thank God he gave me a chance to do it but at the same time I know I still come from that route that rules Jodeci I've never ever forget about that and if I was on concerned I would never I would never ever leave my group gotcha and then all the guys we feel the same way we made a pack we made a pack in North Carolina when we got when we got on that um before we got on the freeway as we said our prayer we would never ever ever leave each other and God listen to that for sure so we take that but it's everywhere we go we would never ever leave each other so devonda could be out there doing what he want to do JoJo down on myself we already know when this time of Duty Call we gotta go so give me this Branch give me the KC and JoJo you're just gonna skip over do you believe in love I wasn't gonna I mean you just be because we ain't got to Casey and JoJo yeah you're very different [Music] first time everybody [Laughter] you won't be Jojo I am whoever I'm allowed to be I'm The Unofficial six member of Joseph you know what are you singing that there's a note in there right I didn't I don't even know where he's in there man too we played like not long ago and we've been ready for um like we're getting ready for tour now I've been doing all our stuff you know I'm ready for the tour now we'll be there can you can you say the tour dates real quick if you don't mind oh man starting the end of July start the end of July right mate oh what's the dates what's the name of the tour block party yeah SWV Andrew and Drew Hill yeah all right I will be making appearances in the audience all right man that's where I will be me too singing backgrounds all right loud don't bother me come on you just left me just let me sing dude you gotta do ushers let me stand in the aisle whatever outfit y'all wear the first night I'm getting it made everyone just like yeah you got it at it man you see we go full out just hey you do see that man I'm telling you out when I walked in here right I was looking for I was looking for a wardrobe first yo I didn't get to remember we got it yeah he called me he said you know I'm going there right I said I know I am too Jay went there too didn't you jack he said it's gonna be hot I said I'm okay with that hey I'm okay with that if you jealousy you wear your feet you go in the desert what um Love You for Life wow oh yeah that no I was trying to say for that no because love is where I live that was that was Wicky but it's another note that we're putting out because I just found out about this a few weeks ago because whoa where that come from yeah yeah I heard I heard it you heard it absolutely Devonte absolutely yeah absolutely I said oh that's crazy it's fun now let's go to Casey and JoJo okay that's when I met you guys when I finally met you guys I was we were doing Summer Jam in La okay and y'all uh y'all y'all went on right after me and and y'all were walking and I was just like and yet that you spoke to me you're like what up tank this know my name [Laughter] [Music] I can't like it was my first time I ever seen you wow you know what I'm saying like in person uh and then you say that and then you say yeah you come by the house later y'all come by the house did y'all come damn right what do we do man but we've been in the big house that time yep me with the pool in the back you Dave Hollister okay I got on the piano and we sang all night and JoJo wouldn't let me stop singing for real for the judge I'm tired I was at your house wow it was it my Hero's house do we have a house full of this oh what it felt like everything you had imagined yeah absolutely I think I tripped over like a gallon of Hennessy I don't even know they made these I said what is this it's the large bottle my God and it's empty [Laughter] bro that was one of the I still see that day like of Jessica oh yeah one of the best days we had some fun boy I tell you and get just give me give me the thinking in you and JoJo you and your brother saying let us let's do a project together and coming coming up with that hit well once again um go back to what Devante said the price of the tree the branch of the tree the bondage I think we should do our own things so at that time I was I was I was living in Atlanta at the time I went into a vacation vacation stand so wow once again JoJo once again calls me on the phone yo I'm working on something out here man I don't need you I don't need you yes you do once again let me hear something over the phone now stop you know I left Atlanta man you know and went to L.A man me and Joe just started uh love always the album and stuff man and uh our first project was a uh wow Bulletproof soundtrack how could you after we did that man yeah we got some here man let's keep this going this thing I know me and JoJo um got our management Damon Jones at the same at the time because he would imagine JoJo then I came aboard so I was like yo man all right I'm down let's do it JoJo man there you go with that man every time I start something every time I stop some man yeah you go man Casey been aggressive I need in on that chat who's who's older you you were yeah I already knew from that conversation he's the big brother I'm in there I'm in there I'm telling you to turn that verse down I let him do what he wanted to do he want to do that all my life I said cool but I'm in there I'm gonna bring me some last night let up in there I was sitting at a home that's all you missing that's all you missing is me so y'all got y'all got two things that stick out for me um it's Casey and JoJo I'ma go to the I'm gonna go to the Bay Area one first okay say that you got it all oh yeah yeah every day at the mall every day at the mall he folded at the video shoot playing pool that is such a classic it was man it was man it was a wild day did you write that first I mean I mean that hook hey did you get it all but they would do is to produce is like 40 people with uh just like the same thing with how do you want it when we did it I already knew where I was going so um those are my two yeah I needed to know about them they would be like do some reference yeah and um and then you would do KC yeah let's put some KC on it that's all yeah do a little bit of arrangement how does it feel yeah that did give us some Rhythm living in the fast lane how do you want it how do you feel coming up for real that's their real talk I think we all wish we had here I think we all grew up wishing oh yeah yeah cause y'all were doing that's the thing too it it kind of came full circle with starting with Father MC yeah and then 840 and too short and Tupac like you guys were already are so integrated into hip-hop music it just made sense like it didn't even feel like a r b hook yeah it just felt like it's Jodeci on the record it's Jodeci yeah I think it Bianca why are you saying that I think if I'm not mistaken I think we'll be the first group to ever did like class with rappers or I mean Lily got 50 with the first one at the father and see I never heard nobody and not in our era if we did I don't know but as far as I heard I thought it was I think it was the first one father and see what's the first thing yeah because that was before uh Boyz II Men and Lakota yeah yeah it was it was yeah so with that idea to is it was it he just needed somebody to hop on the record or was that a way of introduction for y'all from Dre Dre Andre Andre knew he was doing this this I'm gonna um introduce my group like that and once again they they sent this to the studio to do it and uh Corey Rooney uh it's Corey right Corey yeah yeah uh Corey and um oh man come on now Marky D frisbach boys yeah yeah it was producing Lottery yeah they did that they did that and um once again got me a joke in the studio let us here treat them and uh it sounded good but it wasn't Church in us enough so cheating like they wanna be treated nobody nobody nobody said we put that church in there that was it and um you know it was cool so what made you because you brought this up earlier or or did anybody tell you you need to do Bobby Womack you need to do If You Think You're Lonely Now I was chilling I was chilling at home one night man and um Dre called me Drake called me lucky enough I was like only a few blocks away from the studio because I had a condo you know I wasn't standing in my house and I was sending my condo in uh in the city yeah yeah I was saying condo you got a couple things yeah anyway he called me yo what you doing I said yo uh today it's 12 o'clock man what's going on I need you to come around to the studio you're in the city that's a young City and he's going to just do your man do this song um uh if you think Alone number why Bobby Womack you know that I see I know that my mama know I had my daddy don't you know and I read around the house a few times what's up and I already liked it because I I like that song I need you to come around the corner and do that that's a man come on Drake man just get around here man so when I got around there I was blessed because right when I before I got to the studio Mr Womack himself himself I did a reference for me are you serious I'm dead up she did a reference for me man so nine Now it's 12 o'clock I said you want me to um sing like that this hard right he said yeah you can do it I listen to the um listen to the reference I said what did he have I said when he when he sang that hard what was on his ride or what did he have what was on his rider you know so he like I like this check it out he's there yo he ordered a fifth of gin yeah six pack of Heineken give me a favor gin six pack of Heineken now we're having cigarettes get the g m let's go knock that out if that ain't r b music give me a fifth of Cheers [Laughter] and Lonnie get my cigarettes he drinking Newports of cools cool I like the name yeah but if it's like that's how I went I'm I'm not making this up man I know yeah I'm not making this up man that's the truth man that's what I said what did he have what was on his rider why yeah what made him do that yeah what made him do that I need that Jenna do it you went crazy in the crazy went crazy I felt like Bobby I I had to be I had to be in his goodness mode man it was like a biopic yeah you made a biopic yeah in just in one song yeah because I don't think I don't think that I've listened to Bobby's as much as I've listened to yours definitely Our Generation listens to kids I just for sure for sure once yours came out yours was yours was so ferocious though I only listen to his version to this day I only listen to here don't listen to mine wow I'm gonna tell you why it's some stuff that he did in his version that I didn't do so I take it live I do it live but he did in his version I do it live you do it just like his yeah don't do my version live I do his Live Well they do live yeah let's come out of your closet it takes you all around the room that's KC I'll go live I'm like my schedule just come out of your closet and Chase your big ass all around the room I go there with it I do Bobby's talking about a heavy woman yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah do you push yourself because that's another thing too though if you really listen to the record it's it's not a love record it's a hate record it really when skeletons Chase your big ass oh you big man and you're not together no more I see you [Music] yeah so when y'all went viral you and JoJo singing that Tom Joyner my God that is you know what happened that is a pick me up for me you know what I'll watch it and it makes my day check this out man but they did not tell us was [Laughter] and take knows that all too well because he had two times they told us man they told us like um number one everybody had on headphones in there right everybody so what we heard what we heard way different ah man that's great nobody was supposed to I don't understand why they even recording that there's a feed in our ears amen good that's the part you played that's the part they somebody in there was somebody I got their assets no verb just waking up I mean I don't know if they woke up I don't care it's five in the morning I know it is oh man ready not good didn't give a damn buddy when I saw it when I saw it I had to bring it up my first time talking about this when I saw it you want to whoop somebody my ass [Laughter] oh my mind I didn't see that coming oh man that's how we talking [Laughter] like that you could you could you could laugh when you're a legend you can laugh at stuff like that you can laugh when you're a legend you've had so many great moments yeah you're allowed yeah they're allowed you have to so and I think that that's the thing that you know that people have to make sure that they're that they're aware of yeah every day is not going to be a perfect day right now James Cleveland taught me that everything will be approached to that in a congregation yeah yeah hey I don't he saw he saw the Hades things after we got off stage he said it I mean I don't think it was our best um performance and he got on the mic after we got to say even at him tonight that was just damn James damn damn James I get it though it ain't every night is not tonight uh would you wake up [Laughter] [Laughter] come on what what made you get on your bodyguards shoulders I wanna I was thinking about that earlier what made you know your bodyguard show the new one come here that was me come here that was me because now it's multiple artists that have done it now he was up there I meant to do that I mean it was an outside show I meant to do that that wasn't like give me a rib let's go I meant to do that but you know I got that front on on the shoulders though yeah Prince and big chick I got that and I thought nobody else had never done that either right not in my field not in not in my era you know what I'm gonna do I'm gonna start getting on the shoulders I'm gonna stop doing that because I get to plus I get to walk around the whole wherever I'm performing at but I don't get no shoulders no more man but I walk through the audience you retired the shoulders man it had to why you retired the show had to man I can't be I can't be right now I just want I want my legacy to be Casey is a hell of a hell of a hell of a damn performer on that stage you know what I'm saying you ain't got to get on those shoulders you ain't got to do no dance moves he ain't gotta um walk the crowd which I would just still do yeah I want people to know okay she can stand around that stage flat-footed flat flat-footed oh they know that flat they know that yeah and rock your world flat once I once I pop them legs back into my Rodeo style stance you know baby that's all they need are you and JoJo the only artist who've ever been in three groups this is me are you you're doing counting uh Milestone yeah y'all the only artists three different groups Teddy Riley Teddy oh cause he was in Rex in the facts he's technically in wrecks in the fact yeah yeah uh he got black street Direction effects and Guy Teddy and he does a solo Teddy thing with the glitter and everything where he dances like Michael Jackson hey man you stupid he got all this out I love teddy [Music] um [Laughter] I'm telling you now the people want to know people want to know uh uh brother brother Cedric it's just comedy sounds good um you know in your travels yeah [Music] and this r b thing it's gospel thing being a Titan yourself [Music] there are definitely people not many in Psalms that inspired this great man you see we want to know you are [Music] your top five yeah top five your top five what else [Music] can I see your time [Music] yes [Music] [Music] Hello Lord have mercy gospel your world your top five singers your world no particularly it could be whatever it won't Whatever you want it to be Marvin Winans talk to talk [Music] Kick It Off um Steve one um yeah yeah Marvin Gaye [Music] my personals right yeah you want me to say you damn right I can't even front okay Charlie and tank okay front I feel like I feel like he just hit the game winning three brother [Applause] nah Jacob but hold up I'm not saying that because you're sitting right here man I'm saying that because every time I when I hear you sing man it's like man my mama like you [Music] she told me to tell you hi too hey Mama yeah tell that little squishy eye boy this morning when she told me that anyway you your style man is like I know they trying to do this I've heard things about artists coming out they gonna be the nudists they gonna be the new that for my era my era and the way your performance is you that new Marvin person that's just me wow do I have to be with it don't have to be the way you sing or I know y'all got different styles but yo yo yo or you know it's like when I saw you on the on on on a New Edition tour I said yo that's that's a new Marvin right there and y'all did y'all think too I saw that man but that's how I feel about you man yeah you're my top five for sure I hang over to tell this your Arrangements you know all that man all that people just don't know and see they're not from well we found they wouldn't get it yeah I get it I know I I know what I know I know the field when you sing I that's Church man what are you doing now a lot of people do runs a lot of people just do unnecessary right you do runs that necessary you know I'm not around singer I'm just an aggressive singer but you do Rhymes that make you I don't know yeah that's the only time I was saying boy keep doing what you doing man yes sir you definitely you know you've been up right I need wipers honey bathers somebody feeding me grapes yeah you ever you did you hear what you got to order yeah that's some Marvin Gaye like he right there yeah I love you for that brother because you bro you are you are in My DNA oh yeah man 100 and I appreciate that oh yeah Casey your top five R B songs it can be anything but yo sorry it could be the air by itself anything funny anything funny anywhere anything from the Suns and and the sons of kid life anything from that anything anything anyone that's one mm-hmm um Wildflower no you're going there for New Birth oh yeah you're going there yeah yeah the new birth of course definitely um can I say man this is crazy r b there's two right there who wants to listen to bro that's artists uh Bobby Womack if you think he lonely now why not song for you Johnny Hathaway song for you oh my God that's what foe yeah we need one more no more I mean as someone's the key to life you got 37 songs [Laughter] I gotta say this y'all I'm sorry Forever My lady why not having my lady why not it has to be it has to be it has to be Forever My lady that's it because that song right there is like every time I sing that song I just I I forget this is me um I forgets it's me hmm that's how good it is what song do you get tired of singing if there's any what song is you like ah here we go with this one again uh I I um I I put my All In to everything that I've seen and I and I enjoy them so much until I really really don't get tired of singing none of them because every time I sing them I get a different feeling I don't I don't approach them the same way everything I say so I'll never get tired of that's why I don't get tired of it because I approach them a different way every time I sing yeah different crowd different feelings I love that sometimes I'll be like yeah man you know it all depends how the crowd is yeah you know what I'm saying I'm saying it this way I'm not even but sometimes I gotta go up ain't gotta go up I'm gonna keep it real low for this crowd and just gonna kill him yeah so I gotta say I don't I don't know episode I get tired of whatever that all right let's build your Voltron it's called a Voltron it's called your super R B artist we're gonna get you gotta get the vocal from somebody you got to get the performance style from somebody you got to get the styling from somebody and you got to get the passion the heart of the artist from somebody to make your ultimate R B singer who are you getting that vocal from now for nostality singing or or who's your leasing who's your lead singer my lead singer yeah of all time Marvin wines it's the way just it's the way he it's the lit it's his delivery yeah his delivery man his delivery I mean no no uh Adam not here to knock on nobody I monster okay he's a monster but I I I see but kills doing I I can you can hear it too you're a singer come on now that's Marvin Winans that's that's that's where he was groomed yeah yeah so I get it but it's something about Marvin soulster oh my God I had a I had a brother uh Jonathan Hall got arrested so he passed recently and he studied Marvin like nobody's business and he and I ended up on the road singing backgrounds with genuine together and Aaliyah yeah and when we went overseas to sing with genuine she would let us come up to the stage and ad-lib and so you know I would do do my cute little ad-libs and all my little runs and stuff and he would come out there and put on a full Marvin Winans clinic and proceed to kick my ass every night and my guy big Bob who was playing guitar back in DC quartet he's like you know John to kick your ass so whatever these two girls wouldn't want to hang out with me so whatever okay Marvin wanted us so you get the vocal from who you getting the performance style from this style on stage performance performance style on stage it like I said I came up in um quartet get what I'm saying so look looking at those older guys back in the day how they reacted with their crowds and um yeah they interact with the crowds and how they get theirself involved that dog that's all Church quartet man gospel like the Keynotes and the um the violinaires you gotta pick one don't try to get out of it I get my stop in Casey come on come on I tried I try to be nice today pop yo Yoji [Laughter] bouti because but a car I carry that with you know I've just put that from Casey got everything from gospel you're different so you know I have to put it in r b yeah I did I sent you on stage it's difficult it's a problem ain't no dancing no I hate that no this is no I hate that now you do do some gyrating yeah that that that that that comes with the so you do some humping you do you do something I gotta do that gots to do that got to do that it's in here right it's right here okay can we got Casey performance style we got Marvin wines on the vocals it's getting aggressive we getting the styling from the the drip of the artist what they what they what they putting on um we just what we do like I said we always want to be different you can say the name yeah but far as right now no anytime anytime anytime with our clothes you know what I'm saying we're going who you you think I feel like who we dressed yeah get the stolen from your damn self there you go there you go but right now you know um I I have helped you know God blessed me with my beautiful wife so she got a good one she got a good taste come on yeah keep you right come on rib she makes yo yes Maria come on ribs so she helped me right now now she said baby nah he ain't wearing that nah nah you ain't doing it I mean she had me have a fitting session every night before I walk out the door I love it what a woman a real woman elevator man to be into him truth his true self there you go a woman will do that for you the right woman and she always she always um and still in my head I was like babe won't you know put shopping something nice for yourself she said you know what babe I can do that on my time but right now they looking at you they ain't looking at me I gotta make sure you right hmm you got you one of those you know and the church say who he is who yeah oh yeah yeah they not looking at you they're not looking at you woman I already know what he gonna say sorry I know exactly look at me [Laughter] all right who you getting the heart of the artist from The Passion of the artists The Passion of it yeah like like just I love it I love what they doing and like putting they all in James Brown making the crowd sweat Prince Michael okay you can pick three all of them stevies that list is long can you pick one or you need all four let me pick one let's pick one sweat man I was just talking about this too today on the way over here uh James Brown yeah no argument no argument no argument you don't think no no I'm not arguing that at all I hear stories of where James Brown used to laugh laugh at people's performances like that's all y'all got [Laughter] oh yeah that's all y'all gonna do and get out there and proceed to sweat yeah for a hour and a half sweat yeah I'll tell you what I did one time man I oh I'm in the bag on the Bible I was just I did that I did talk just a little bit just just a little bit of joke uh we had a show with um I think I think of a boy as the men I think we just know Australia and um for a joke but really it didn't was no joke so I'm walking to my dressing room and I see the sign boys man on uh on the door voicemail bring it Showtime champ is here I went out there and they were close you went back on that door Showtime Champions here Showtime Champions here Ali boom uh looking back at him backstage stores I love them oh listen they love you too it's love and it's love but it was you know it was it was it was brotherly competition yeah there you go yeah this is what it was that's what it was especially in those days especially though yeah they're gonna be your night James brother I promise you I'm gonna try to get everything you need anytime you see me it's just like hey we just like we did we did a show with um mint condition JoJo let him have it Joseph your ass out if you're in the competition JoJo told him y'all what I asked out last night I don't care that's how it is how it's supposed to be yeah what no oh man look y'all no none of that no this is family competition there wasn't no turn they sound down no no none of that no none of that no that's too many LED walls yeah yeah that's that's the wild right there when they start taking away oh yeah listen yeah we can't do that I want everybody on the bill to have everything they need yeah there you go yeah even playing there you go if they need that they need that here let's cook yeah there you go let's give it's like this when we're doing shows when you're doing shows with other people my take on it is I don't care you go kill them I want you to kill them at the end of the day it's up to those people that paid it they paid um they money for those tickets to see that it's just going to see one good act they want to see all the oh it looks good yeah if you if you busting ass do that yes do that it's not about you know well it just cause it's our tour nothing we should get more no no no no no no no no no everybody gotta have that you know what I'm saying let them do their thing because when you leave a jodeci's tour um we want people saying that was a good concert not George she did good absolutely yeah yeah yeah everybody got to do good yeah everybody got to do good man and people don't understand like even the business side of it is that you know when it comes to putting that lineup together and divvying up that money and you easily put that money in your pocket right yeah but a lot of times you are carving out money to make sure that you have the right people there you go on that show there you go yeah to carry that you're back until it's your time you're right you're right so when your money on the line yeah you better show up and show out there you go that's some of my money yeah so you could have kept that you better get up there go there and do you you better do you know what I'm saying she got to do it yeah yeah cause I could have kept that because we sure could have kept it [Laughter] we got one more segment for you uh brother okay see foreign he'll be here all week I'm all week so right now talk to him we got a special segment of the show it's called Einstein on there will you tell us a story
