hello and welcome to another episode from the water's edge and today we're doing something I've been excited about since we arranged the session and because that were big thanks to angling direct we've been put on a date with the SPRO guys to hopefully show us for a bit of like jig fishing which for me personally is something I've never actually done before so it's going to be a big learning curve for me so I've got Johnny here first of all all right just we've had a little go already this morning but what we do is just take a little break from fishing a lot little fishing week but hopefully we can talk you for a bit about the tackle we need cuz I said for me I'm learning as well and for hopefully anyone who's not done this sort of fishing it was really simple and that was what I liked about it so I suppose let's start off with the basic basic what is jig fishing or soft bait fishing that we were doing earlier it's basically a stripped-down form fishing where you've got essentially a rod a real line and a weighted hook on that weighted hook you put your blue in this case we were using a little array of different roses and her soft plastics we got the paddle tiles like these which obviously they're ribbed and have a have sort of a enlarged area at the end which which pushes the water through it which then will put the action in is amazing when you shoot me like just a literally how much moving that crate is from doing pretty much nothing it just like that route you can see why they hit it it doesn't take a lot to make but you can see the way I'm holding it now that the talus is moving all over the net you back moving your hand and then the other types we have our split tiles like this which again have lots of movement but when they're in the water they keep them more of a straight profile and they don't move quite as much that certainly in the winter time less is more yeah so you put one of these on you don't get quite the erratic movement that you would do with the paddle tail and is there any different of there's loads of different colors net does it make difference do you feel most difference it does make a difference but it's not the be-all and end-all so in very clear water I'll always go for a natural a more natural pan so I go for maybe whites I know you said this falling that was your favorite one yeah but then if you get slightly more colored water probably go for a color maybe something a bit of our engine that always works well for us and white is always good to know that really shows up and clicking colored water well but it's more about just giving it giving it a try and seeing what playing with it yeah by today and then whatever works stick to it brilliant so let's move on into a little bit because it's knob viously not all the way close um you've kindly lent us some some of the tackle today so let's have a little look about the rod to start with them what rods do you need to do is start a fishing as well lightweight this is all about being as light as possible it almost looks like a little quiver tip rod doesn't at this end that's essentially what it is now this is a solid tip on this rod but very light I think this one's about seven to twenty eight gram it's employ little movements I suppose that light tip makes that a little jig move then what yeah coupled with the braid everything you do down here you want transmitted through the tip and put into the loop so that's the importance of that rod yeah that's right and it depending on different circumstances you might want more length shorter you know but really it comes down to having that that soft tip and being able to transmit everything free to the verso and then we're down to little small real yet lightweight real they need to have a big real mainly fishing for small fish so you don't need no to my odds and closes but I was just passing about that now and then watch the I'm human quite important is obviously having the braid on there the braid yet the braid is the be-all-end-all really um the difference you get through braid fishing feeling every tiny little knock every you know every time you touch a little bit of weed or anything like that you can just feel it come right the way through that's so on this one you've got it coming down to a white raised but on this one or notice we had it covered down to where a gardener open yet so the difference and why why would you say the differences between them well the reason I always put a white race on is when I'm when I come to a new piece of water I always like to put a white trace on because anywhere you got Pike you know you always stand a chance of hooking one so I put why trace on and fish through quite hard to start with and generally speaking if there's pike there they'll they'll have it so that water trace societal protection and to be honest like this or this morning it doesn't make a big dinner no you work action just amazed this little for a cup what it is so a lot the time end up leaving it on I just get I just do a little loop to loop with a perfection loop yeah not able wire down to a loop on to a jig head and away you go if the fish are being particularly finicky more happy it happens more in the winter or then I'll go to the strip it right back to do it girl and yes right so I know this morning as well before we get back fishing we were catching a lot of perch a lot of smaller perch it's not only perch you can target list you might you do a lot of fishing I know you said from your kayak you have a lot of fishing even chub doing it so it can be long as it's something that would attack say a less a movie thing you'd be happy to use this fish with it yeah yeah I've had chub big job they love it tend to fish it up in the in the water column a bit more not quite down on the bottom like we were this morning for the perch yep pike you know I had double-figure Pike like that little dirt least you got a fitter like you said that fit why I like it for me even if you know you can you can go down even smaller and I don't think I've got anything super small in here but I've got some smaller stuff yes that's a bit small and we using tonight you get down into something like that and you'll start to pick up bream reach yeah yeah see how that would surprise me in Italy that that will actually happen no there's certain times of the year when all course fish will be present or something yeah takes on a smaller and at the end of the day that represents a worm as much as doesn't it looks a bit especially yeah like I said that that flutter of the tails that goes down that's going to irritate it nicely so they're not I said one more thing before we go because one thing always struggle with before you you were showing me earlier is how you actually hook these on because that's just as important as working them nicely which we'll talk a bit more about how you work and when we get fishing but if I just take this one off yeah if you just show me again how you hook that on because it is relative important and a little bit about the little weight set we've gotten there because it was all quick change and really efficient which I was quite impressed with when you hear me so this is a we'll just take the other one careful yeah I'll just save everyone first so this is fixed Jacob and basically it's that's your strategy wire and completely fixed it's a piece of lead with an upturned eye and the hook comes straight off that and you take your lure with that work out which way up you want the fish yep and then you literally like threading a worm on you get the head you push it through he gets about the point where you're going to come out yet and then actually comes push in so that one was actually really quite nice and simple it's just a threat unlike worm come at the top and leave plenty would you leave it at the hook point showing so no you said with him you can as their children really quickly you can leave the hook covered in there yeah pens on the honest on how much structure your fishing III if there's if it's quite a bare bottom you can you can have the hook showing like that if there's a bit of structure about and your and weed especially you can stick them in so you'd actually almost leave the hook sort of covered within that you know a little bit it'll be fair sell so much a lot of stuff like that that's right but then if there's if you're still getting trouble from weed then you can go on to what we have here see this one is what I was which is a worm hook which is which you allows you to fish at weedless so again you take your lure you put up against the side of the cages to see where it's going to end up but the difference with this is you first you hook it free the tip of the head so then comes out free the bottom thread the worm or the fish pan up onto the shank of the hook and then you've got it is a little bit more feeling the other one bill fiddling but once it goes on it was actually really really good and how it worked was impressive so then you put the slit open it up push the hook through there so it's still in principle on the hook the same way yeah well it's it's slightly different and much easier to do that weed this presentation you were saying because actually there's no hook point though no at all and that was the biggest I think bigger surprise for me this morning is when we first got it that was all covered I was like there's no way that's going to hook but every time was I was playing but pretty much every time it's not they hook it so that I fit that one for me it's really good which is another little quick thing about the lead here than that is that the head on this is different it's not a fixed lead so basically that jig head there you can ship in a change different size hooks you could we could switch to a long worm hooks and on weedless circuit you if we found that there wasn't any any weight about and by doing that you just push just all quick chains in it so that comes all work out push that off like that and the head still attached and then just then you just change you change your hook so that would be fine you can also change the white quickly on that one see if you want to get heavier so everything about it is just quick change anything double in also quite like it if you've got a bait with a bit of buoyancy in it yeah by having that upturned head the bait will actually sit up right okay yeah off that and because it's because you've got that movement between the the eye and the hook and the eye on the jig head you've got that bit of movement there so she's planning movement between all manner of different things especially pointing down the even looks like possibly little feed and fishes that's right that so that's probably why they're smashing these lures so hard and like I said it was pretty fast this morning so I think we probably better get back to it and we'll talk to you a little bit more about how you're working because I said I learnt loads this morning in like five minutes just about how gentle you wearing bits and pieces so we hook these back up and get background there yeah then we'll we'll do a little bit more about how you working them what sort of place you looking cast and where these things can be let's get background ever so I have to have a little look at the gear we're background deer fishing again now I've got the road behind me see what I can learn Johnny so what we said earlier a bit boat how you actually retrieve it in that so you just literally making small movements it's all about transferring this down to the water to your lure and it's about using this braid and then the light tip like we said to maximize the movement or or minimize the movement depending on what the fish you have one so it's all in the in the fingers and the wrist so each time they'll be wanting difference on the time they want faster slower so it's all about working on the day yes right yeah it's really the main lot literally you turn a handle it like almost not even turning it really it's just about keeping in touch always keeping in touch and as we found the small in these fish at the moment a taken it just as the the lures coming up and then on the drop that's when they haven't I know that's one of the first thing you said to me you notice that within three casts no I was a bit like how did you notice that but having had a little go myself I think everyone I hooked was not as it was sinking they just come off and you sort of feel that rattle and you're on that's the the little things that you've got pay attention to is just knowing when that fish is taken so you can so you can react to that and do more of it I suppose that must that must just come of experience because you you literally done in a couple of cars which I would have done but you've done a lot of this sort of fishing so we have a bit of experience you'll work that out pretty quick it is enjoyable as well so does this one of things that once you start to do it you sing get hooked so you tend to do more yeah I'm good buy myself a little self but so boy we are as well this is a purpose of very obviously we've got boats around like perfect cover and bits and pieces that's what you'd be looking for yeah loads of structure dramatic change in depth there's a bit of weed in the water as well which always helps holding the bait fish they did their generic sort of predator spots really but the perch do particularly like these these like close to the to the agency under the pylons and it wouldn't work just as well on sale being open ripples not really the place to use it it wouldn't be as effective certainly you can use it but anyway you've got a lot of flow obviously you have to increase the white-white you're using and then good for that little quick change weight and if certain places different places have another go now because there's loads approach here earlier I'm sure see if we can get one within the next couple your limb you look at one little bit of a drop-off out there where there just seems to be a bit of a show when you just sort of you feel if that rattle aren't you yes right you're not really waiting a lot I probably would but it's not a real smash and grab it sort of just feel that rattle free the rod tip that boat was upsetting these folks of CA ecology from this morn that's quite a lot not more color with that I would use a brightener or home how often would you change on that subject would you change all the while it's all about confidence really so it's long as you're confident what you're using then then stick with it but as soon as you start to doubt something doubt something have a changing as well that's how I work if I doubt something I change up until I find something that works again and then become confident again obviously if there is if there is a lot of color in the water then you do want something that's going to show up right here hello said a little they worried that so can almost see just watching your line that sort as it drops you I see that little rattle just watching the end of the rod and always fish right into your feet you never know where they're going to be often they'll be as many fish rod bare feet so with that little inquiry they've obviously felt felt a little Wow is that a time to let it draw you has it speed up what was the process of when very often if you get a little route alright you let it drop dry to the bottom and just on the next which again right so it's always clear you let's come off but never want to recast with any any muck of any kind on your on your lure your hook because the fish will pick up on sea poison how well they work though there's a lot of stuff and a surf and they're not catching it'll I don't know hello-o third time lucky I didn't take off dinner but I said there's a lot of mayor earlier still we little one but great fun night pop him back in he's gone so as notice as well one thing you are certainly doing is you've literally got next enough and have you've got a rod a little jig and in a bag literally that's all you got so yeah that's all you need that's it you've got a little net as well it's one of the beauties of this is this method you really do not need a lot of gear you know it's just about the rod the real your line and you baits little so actually right in here I'll have just a few packets of different hooks just a wallet with a few different soft plastic ties different baits net in there oh yeah so basically you you can move well just all the world so one spot no goods you offer the next one try to find some fish he's doing on that and relatively actually if you start now cost-wise is pretty cheap very cheap here you know there's very good rods on the market now for fifty fifty pounds yeah and so raises well get an insufficient this would be a cracker way to start someone off in it oh yeah a little adventure and into fishing definitely really nice method for kids you know once you it's not it's not the hardest method in the world and also the as you can see is we had this morning you know when you find fishing in Dubai right sort of were like literally or every other card for the one but I think I'm going to run on the growl of what you catch enough now I'm going to see if or you know see if I can have a copper as well so I'll grab the old rod up but we just popped round to the other side we left Johnny fishing over there and I'm going to see if I can put some stuff into practice that Oh little touches that issuers earlier so like I said I've never done this before apart from the half an hour perhaps that I fished this morning and doesn't take long it's for you to work out in your head bits that we were talking about earlier and how you can see how things work and what you need to be doing not just letting that sink a little bit deeper and its are the only reason I moved is because the boats were staring up quite a lot of the silt in that from the bottom it's a little bit clearer around here and touch deep we're losing a lot of water with the tide see if I can catch one for myself well here we go my lesson in jig fishing is paid off not the not the biggest perch but there's loads of these little fellas out there and it's just great fun like I said something I've never done before to come out catch on a new tactic new information it's all good fun so let's say the unhooking will slip them back I think that's my lesson over in jig fishing we're going to carry on fishing over copper hours but the cameras going and obviously like so big thanks to angling direct SPRO Gamakatsu and obviously jonny for giving us away all his tips and tricks he's home to over the years is certainly going to be something oh there we are look one in the Lascaux certainly give me something I'm gonna be investing in get myself a little rod and reel but for now little perch to end with and as always big thanks for watching and we'll see again a next one you
