hey guys this is gene jensen and today we're gonna go shopping we're gonna talk about your basic tackle we're gonna put together a beginner's tackle box so stay tuned [Music] [Applause] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so today we are at sportsman's warehouse in chattanooga tennessee and they are so awesome to let me do this i've been trying to do something like this at a store for a long time i found out it was pretty difficult to to be able to do this but uh anyway so they're gracious enough to let me shoot a video and uh all right so what we're gonna do is uh we're gonna go pick out some tackle and uh the tackle that i'm gonna choose is just basically uh simple stuff stuff that you can learn to use fairly easily and you can build upon it as you get to go and buy more tackle and as you fill your tackle box and i can completely understand how uh how confusing it is i mean all the tackle that's in just this fishing section here at uh at sportsman's warehouse is pretty daunting so we're gonna really really basic dumb it down make it easy and uh yeah that's what we're gonna do anyway let's go shopping all right so the first thing we're gonna pick out is tackle boxes um there are so many different choices girls boys kids um big ones little ones ones that fall apart when you stan when you pick them up no i'm just kidding but there's a ton of tackle boxes a ton of choices and you know what really what i would start with with a basic tackle box because you can build upon these you can buy more and more of them and they just kind of they fit inside of a backpack it's just your simple 2600 or 3600 size boxes so this is the best mafia box and in several companies make that size box i mean plano does flambeau does so just as long as it falls within your budget pick one up because you can buy more and more of them and just you know like i said just throw them in a backpack all right so let's run over to the terminal tackle what terminal tackle is is basically your hooks your sinkers your jig heads things like that let's just pick out some basic stuff all right so the first thing that comes to mind when i'm thinking basic things and basic tackle that um that you can build upon is a texas rig and with a texas rig requires a couple of things requires a bullet weight let's see let's just get a basic bullet weight and the two sizes that i would start out with is a quarter ounce and an eighth ounce and yes you can go buy your expensive tungsten weights and things like that but that's not what i recommend to start with these are only 1.49 a bag and that's basically what i would start with but get two different weights one to fish a little bit deeper one fish a little bit shallower or faster or slower or whatever so eighth ounce and quarter ounce all right so the next thing you want to pick out is a worm hook and what you're looking for is you're looking for something what we call an offset hook you see that hook eye right here and you see how it comes down and it bends that's called an offset this is a wide gap hook it's got a really really wide gap then you've got your standard ones let's see if i can find one this is a small one but your standard worm hook that just comes down straight there's not a whole lot of wide gap and what i would start with is i would start with something like a wide gap hook now my favorite worm hook is this one right here this is a grip pin wide gap grip pin hook and the grip pin keeps the worm on the hook a little bit easier that one and another one i'd pick up is just a standard wide gap any you know any make or model like that but i pick them up in two different sizes four on focus four on and three odd is what i would do see the little size four and three out of the two good ones that i would start with and that finishes us up for this text for the texas rig all right so the next one that's just nice to have um and something you can use with just about any soft plastic just like a texas rig would be a shaky head and there are tons and tons of different types of shaky heads and the ones that i like are the ones with the little spring locks on them a little screws let me see if i can find one real quick this is kind of an example right here you see that right there it's got a little screw on it and we'll go through that here in just a minute but that's that's what i like as i love love to have a shaky head it's one of those things that when nothing bites when you're not getting any bites that usually can get you a good a good bite or two and then it's uh it's pretty simple to pretty simple to use and that's another one of those things you can build on and and learn it and you can learn a bunch of other stuff and now one of my favorite lures to fish is a jig but jigs are hard to get to hard to fish they're one of those things that people really don't have a lot of confidence in because they don't get a lot of bites but if you want to eventually get to the point where you're catching bigger fish with a jig then i would start with something like this this is a what they call a it's a jointed structure head is what strike king calls it but it's basically a jointed jig it's got a wide gap hook on it and then those little the jig heads actually uh are free swinging and what i like about those is those things are so hard to get hung up so if you're bank fishing which i assume most of you will be bank fishing to start with that's one of those things that just just never seems to get hung up that often so that's another thing i would check out all right so now for something that um what are you gonna put on those that terminal tackle what are you gonna put on those hooks well they are look behind me i mean look at all the soft plastics there are so many choices so what would i start with i'm going to start with a trick worm it's what it's it's just catches fish and it's really easy to fish and it goes on a texas or it goes on one of those little jig heads goes on a shaky head start with a trick worm start with two different colors don't worry about the rest of them green pumpkin which is that one right there in black those are the two that i would start with just grab those two and go out and go have some fun fishing with soft plastics all right so that takes care of the um of the soft plastics of the bottom baits of the things that are fished like a jig you know that the fish are usually in two different moods they're either in the mood to eat something off the bottom eat something move really move really slow which i both the same thing or they want to hit something moving and so there's a ton of different choices crankbaits uh spinner baits any type of swim bait and things like that but we're not what i would start with because i'm assuming that most of you are going to be fishing from the bank is i would start with a spinner bait and my favorite beginner spinner break my favorite spinner bait to give to somebody who has never caught a fish on one is a really small one and uh these are my favorite small ones see if i can pull a couple of them out is the strike king mini king is a really good one and then there's someone a little bit bigger called the premiere pro model and then uh the red eye special which i don't really care about the colors of the eyes but these these small spinner baits pick one up in white and pick one up in a white and chartreuse don't worry about the blade colors right now don't worry about the you know configuration and things like that you just want something you can cast out and wind in and bump through cover and something that's not going to get hung very easy while you're bank fishing a crank bait probably isn't a good idea because crank baits they get hung a lot hung up a lot easier and so um so i wouldn't even consider a crankbait to start with they're pretty much more frustrating from the bank than they're worth fishing all right and that's it that's that's what i would start with really and and then you can build from there like i said it's just the beginning i don't want you to spend a whole lot of money i don't want you to break the bank doing this because you sure can i mean i don't even want my wife to know how much money i've spent on tackle but uh in the next video we're going to talk about rods and then the next video we're going to talk about reels and and get you started with those so like i said be sure to introduce somebody to fishing introduce them to my channel let me help you teach them how to fish more importantly get out of the water go and catch a fish and have a great day
