a basket here and today we're going to talk about the basics of fishing a Jean the first thing you need to know is that there's five basic jig head types don't let all the noise from all the manufacturers or every individual that makes jigs complicate the matter there's five there's five jig head tops everyone else just makes variations on these jig heads jig head number one the swim head the swim team the swim jig has a narrow head to come through cover more easily the line tie sits high on the front of the head so that you're not dragging your line across whatever cover you may be coming through a swim jig really shines in the grass the flipping jig the flipping jigs head also comes to a point not quite as dramatically as the swim head and the line tie is more in line with the taper of the head you're not making a long cast to drag your line for long distances across the cover you're dropping it in you're pulling it out that's why the line tie sits in the same direction as the heads taper these jigs are made for heavy cover they shine when flipping and pitching the finish jig the finance chick is basically a ball head jig with a skirt on it the finesse jig really shines in cold water situations or anytime that the bite is super tough the football head jig the name really says it all the line tie sits a little higher on the head because this jig is designed to stay in contact with the bottom the line tie sits higher on the head to keep your line off the bottom or any sort of rock that you're dragging it through and that's where this shines sand and rock the football head shines and that sort of cover or structure the are key or the casting head jig now this is a jig we're going to be talking about and we're going to be using primarily today to show you how to fish a jig and this is my favorite style it's a good all-around style of jig you'll see again the line tie sets a little higher on most of our I've got a couple of different versions here you can see the basic style of the head is the same but the Archy head is designed to be cast and brought back to you again why the line tie sits a little higher on the jig it's designed to come through rocks it's designed to come over brush it's designed to be skipped underdog but the are key or the casting jig is really an all-terrain vehicle it's an all-purpose jig it works really well around a multitude of different covering structure and that's why I recommend this jig for the beginner now yeah I know there's going to be situations where you fish lakes that are primarily grass a swim jig or punching that's going to be I know there's gonna be areas where you guys fish primarily heavy timber again a flippin G that's going to be your thing this jig though can do it all you can flip it you can pitch it you can swim it you can skip it this jig skips very well with the right trailer because of the head shape so let's talk about your rod and reel setup I like a faster reel something in the seven range you can get away with a mid six four six five six eight somewhere in the mid will work just fine I like a faster real because when I set the hook I want to get the fish in the boat sometimes the fish will be swimming toward you so you need that faster reel to catch up to them and not losing I like a seven foot to a seven three medium heavy action rod remember guys we're not going to throw these around you know heavy cover that's a flippin jig will do that with that that type of G this is a cast in jig we're gonna throw it out there we're gonna hop it we're gonna drag it back that's the two retrieves that we're going to use line the type of line I like anywhere from 12 to 15 pound fluorocarbon now I know a lot of guys out there are going to want to use braid but I finished this around a lot of wood and the sound braid makes coming across wood is very unnatural I fish a lot of Clearwater if you fish dirty water braid will work fine and you can up the size but I fish a lot of stayin to clear water and that means fluorocarbon it's the deal for me and it's a great starting point for you do not use mono there's too much stretch so when you go to set the hook you're going to get a lot of stretch out of that line and you may not get a good hook set all right so let's talk about modifications to the jig a lot of guys are going to trim this brushguard generally I don't if I feel like maybe it's so thick that it's going to prevent me from getting a good hook set then I'll trim it basically about a half inch above the hook but now what I normally do is I will take my brush guard and I will spread it spread that brush guard out I'll pull up but I like to spread it side to side until you see my brush guard is a little wider and so what that does is it makes it easy for the hook to come through to penetrate the fish's mouth but it also protects the hook and gives a flatter wider surface for it to come across stumps brush whatever rock it may be coming across so there's one more thing we have to talk about before we start talking about how to fish this jig and that is how to hold your rod and reel now these are low-profile reels they're designed to be palmed in the palm of your hand I put my pinky against the trigger of the rod I like to bring my index finger across the front of the reel I like the line to cross my index finger that gives me more feel more sensitivity hit translate what translates what that fluorocarbon what that jig is doing directly to my hand not through the rod the other purpose of holding a rod and reel like this is it gives you more leverage to set the hook be to drag that fish in or out of whatever cover he might be so let's get into casting now this is a jig don't be afraid to cast it right up into or right down the cover on lay downs you really want to work it down the outside with the lay down coming across the branches a lot of times when you get hung up is when you're coming across you know horizontally across the the lay down so you can cast it any way you like you can roll cast it you can just overhand cast it however you want to cast it but just make it can up to the cover so there's two different retrieves I'll give you to get you started one is just dragging and that's where the feint index finger and the line are really important so we make our cast out to our cover or to our structure and all we do is we begin to raise our tip and work that line back we want to feel the bottom we're trying to let the jig tell us what the bottom is composed of is it soft bottom is it rock is it's and let the jig tell you what you're coming across is it grass you're really when you're using this you're really using a jig as kind of a sonar to tell you what you've got on the bottom the second retrieve is just a hop think about how a crawfish scary's away it'll hop it'll push itself backwards and that's sort of the retrieve that I try to give it so again I always start with my rod tip at about a nine o'clock or three o'clock position and I'll bring it up just pop it pop it pop it to about 11 I don't get any higher than that so from nine to eleven I don't want to get higher than eleven because that really if a fish hits it while it's it while the rods up you're not gonna have anywhere to sit hook if you're at 12 you're going to come back so you really have to make sure 9 to 11 that's as much as you want to go to learn how to fish a jig guys it just takes a little bit of time don't be out there ready to set the hook the first time you feel something a lot of times what you need to do is when you're dragging that bait across the bottom and you feel it start to get tight just work that bait across the bottom and you'll feel it start to get heavier and heavier as you pull it stop give it a quick pop and it will normally come right over whatever log limb or rock that you're dragging it across most of the time when you're starting out you start feeling it get heavy you set the hook you just got yourself a tree pounder a rock fish or something that's going to keep your jig and you're not going to get it back the bye guys most of the time especially with your index finger in front of the reel that line running across your index finger you're going to feel two styles of by small fish peck peck okay it's more treble than bass a big fish is going to be dunk it's going to be a thud it's more bass than treble there will be times when you're going to lift up and it's going to be heavy most of the time though most of the time when you get that bite you'll feel it pull against you so if you're fishing the jig and you lift up and for some reason it's heavy just hold it there for a second if it moves it's a fish if it doesn't it's a limb drop it down give it a little bit of line and give it a couple of quick snaps and you'll come right across there alright so I hope these tips helped you get better at fishing a jig you know if you have any other questions we'll cover how to fish some of the other jigs in later videos this is really a bass 101 how to fish a jig as always guys you know the drill liked it if you liked it don't forget to
