Japan K-Cup Coffee & Green Tea Pods

greetings from Tokyo Japan I'm here on a mission today I'm gonna be introducing you to Japanese k-cup life now a k-cup if you're not sure what that is that is one of these things the little pods here that you put into a machine and it makes coffee or tea for you it's kind of amazing I'll tell you a little bit about it before why I bought one in the United States before I came back to Japan and I discovered that I am sort of at the mercy of the Japanese k-cup industry now and I'm gonna show you what some of that selection is but I brought my k-cup maker to this guy's house mr. Peter Van Gogh man we're gonna we're gonna wake him up and and make some coffee in his house Peter where is he hey is that Darth Vader okay hey can I come up all right he's wearing a Darth Vader mask cool alright I'm coming up I'm bringing the cake ups welcome where are you there you hey guys hold on I think okay there we go there's Peter alright we're coming in so yeah and we set up the cake ready right yeah I was kind of pretending like I came and woke you out but that didn't work it didn't work yeah so I brought here a bunch of K Cups that I bought from the only place that I know where they exist they don't exist in the supermarkets here in Japan you can only get them on Amazon CEO Jiang amazon.com Japan's version okay that's where I ordered these did you this machine is beyond you bought it and the station brought it over yeah I bought this cake cut machine from the United States I got it for Christmas actually and then I'm like oh my gosh I have to put that in my suitcase so I bought it I didn't buy I got as a gift I brought it to Japan and then I gotta use it however yeah you can't get them easily right I'm sort of at the mercy of of this company and it's it's alright let me take off my jacket okay let's get let's get comfortable okay welcome to welcome to Peters Peters abode you can download hey guys where's the lens here so in Japan we have what's called the you kadam Bowl you guys floor and Dumbo is like keep so it's a heated floor it's it's under the flooring so any how's my buddy it's been a while for like a month yeah yeah it's been a while yeah I was kind of sick and yeah back back on my knees as you can see right now I'm a stand-up oh yeah you don't have to be I brought a tripod with me we're going to try out some of these K Cups and show you what Japanese K cups are like what they taste like and if you can if you can tell if there's a difference between the American ones and the Japanese I think that there is I know already because I've tasted that I tasted them and which is which do you prefer I guess you're gonna find out that's what it that's that's what we brought this up all right let's do it here just let me introduce the k-cups real quickly here's the lineup this is what you got in Japan now this box here that this is the one that I got this is the UCC organically grown coffee you see this and has Japanese on it the the first first two kanji are organic the so that's what it looks like the and UCC is the biggest coffee company in Japan used to be the biggest in the world UCC yeah UCC is a big deal I think a lot of people know about it have a seat here thank you very much thank you I was so UCC coffee is the biggest coffee maker in Japan might be Starbucks now to be honest with you but hmm we get your backwards hat with the backwards bros okay this is the company that that is I think one of these the owners or the umbrella for a cake up in Japan the good thing is that UCC as I was saying is the biggest coffee company in Japan they own 80% this is this is this is not Magnemite not be fact but it's an internet fact they own 80% of the Blue Mountain coffee in jamaica bluemountain coffee as you know farms and everything the whole operation japan owns 80% of the Blue Mountain coffee in the world so they bring it from Jamaica because it's the brand they got in 1980s when they had lots of money and they use that and infuse it into the blended coffee to make it more expensive they can put Blue Mountain in it right it's smart UCC is huge the problem is they're also I think somewhat greedy and I don't think that there's a lot of cake coming is bad greed is bad with cake up because there's not a lot of variety there's two reasons why what did I do hold still let me what somebody's getting triggered by your curl is that what kind of trigger is that I have very very little left and what I do I have to preserve okay so you see see there's a couple of reasons why the k-cup is failing in Japan yeah k-cup first of all is not the number one quad this is not the number one pot this is right look at the size difference yeah this is the what the heck is this it's a the flavor you mean well we is just the one that's for an espresso yeah miss Bristow right now the number one pod coffee coffee company is the Nespresso maker which is which is smaller apparently or it's different in the u.s. it's k-cup wake up is everywhere I went to this shop called bath beds Bath & Beyond you know it I and I and what and as soon as I entered bed beds Bath and Beyond they just said k-cups we just called 3b 3b so I went in at 3b and they just had gay cops everywhere the key comes from Starbucks cake cups from Dunkin Donuts k-cups what work did the K Cups fit into bed bath and beyond the beyond part well he had cinnamon bun - I don't that's gotta fall on to be on part that's how they get away with it otherwise we'd be suing them right yeah I guess so yeah it's beyond yeah it's gotta be on it's beyond their lawyer came up with now two reasons why K Cups fair DOS the first one is that there's a competitor in Nespresso which is a brand that's already know nobody knows crew egg this company here so they had their behind Nespresso is a brand that's already stopped everywhere the second reason is creating crew egg the second reason is that none of these capsules are very popular Lauren all right you mean here or in America here here in Japan Erica the reason is because nobody wants to buy a dedicated machine like this and put it on their countertop because John does Japanese counters are really small where you gonna put this thing the second thing is there's already something there on the counter that people use to make coffee and it's the hot water dispenser that's why in Japan they have these little filter things with the paper around it and you can stick it on there those filter coffee deals that come in packages are the k-cup of Japan however I have a k-cup maker so I had to buy these we're gonna get to it oh you do have one yeah and that's you see see oh my god this was a gift from somebody at 40 years look at that yeah these are what you see this is there right everybody has a patent on the way that can go around it so everybody has a different style so this is this called unboxing you meant it's a foil pouch I guess it's unwrapping you mountain baby alright so this is the pouch do you guys have these in the States is it um I think this is in Japan these are popular and k-cups or not these would be in the US what the K cups are here so they're there but they're not popular every company has their own patent on how these are delivered right Starbucks is called origami because the paper looks like what egami they put it on to the top of the cup but it really isn't genius I mean and it's it adjusts to the size of your cup so you can have a really big cup where you can have a small cup like that and so you open it you undo the tab here did you rip this up for a second all right why are we gonna drink it oh I would want to waste this okay when we can compare the taste okay so I'm gonna boil somewhat all right so you tear this little tab right here listen listen don't make any sound you can hear all the beans inside screaming because they're about to be poured with hot water okay all right well I could smell it and yeah and you just look at that and that fancy let me spill it into the yeah nice smell that that's like a coffee this is the good stuff isn't it yeah that's pretty that's mild blend well I got like a deep Italian roast that's a mortar that is why k-cup is not popular because everybody on their countertops in Japan already has another Peters guy can get a little bit closer now that they now everybody have these one oh you see right there this peter has his people already put it down lower people already have this so they don't need this which is twice as big as that I have boils that's the problem with these K Cups so we're gonna start off by having a cup of coffee I'm actually dying for one Peter doesn't know how to use the Kreg you're gonna put that the water in like that you can't do that sorry yeah take that back this is the last stream I'm doing with you how do you take it back it's on the internet I learned the hard way yesterday it's what goes online sometimes stays online alright okay so the first thing the water you need okay hold on because people like well you don't you what I usually do is just put it in in my coffee cup and then I know and it gives you back the same amount of water aren't you snazzy okay alright tell me how much say when when in Japanese they win when you're gonna get a better joke is that a junkie oh oh that's like a cowboy it's a man is that enough a little bit more okay alright so we're gonna add an S this much alright so can you flip the top open and can somebody please check the pronunciation on its rear leg crewing crew incorrect open this top no no this one yes the last time you pronounce can okey everybody got in the benefit yeah people from Italy were very upset I got ghannouchi and people get very upset it was and how do you say no key yes sorry thing I apologize to the entire country of Italy so if you open here's the thing if you keep this open when you open it it opens up this whole you think mmm-hmm the water goes in so you have to keep it closed you don't actually need to put it in the cup they have these little ingenious oh wait sorry they have these things here that tells you how much water is in it when it when it penetrates the hole I guess it tells it's about seven seven ounces boom next I'd turn it on it's working I pull this open up you hear the water is going in it yeah it's gone which one are we gonna taste I don't know did you show them the green tea one that's let's do that second let's go with the coffee now this is I got this from the US this is called No Surrender it is strong because I found that most of the k-cup coffees are really weak this one is pretty good you said this one tastes like this one is a espresso roast however it's I thought well let's just let's just try this one first this is the cafe greco-roman ad 1760 espresso roast and if we don't like it we can give it to Barney so really well Barney drink coffee alright here we go Japanese crew egg it punches a hole in there right I'm not and then like this light comes on there Peter you can set you can push the button really and crush them black yeah where's the right first one right when the blue thing yeah just push you once don't try to be a hero and how hard to push it just push it all right you turned red I know it says brew you should change that put a sticker over cig dude or something like that wasn't funny that was I mean - somebody's laughing somebody - yeah yeah me me 3000 wrote laugh out loud but that could be from my joke I don't know I don't know they're probably not all right this takes typically about a minute to brew I think takes a minute because inside of it it's just a water heater it's basically inside this is that right the cool thing is that it just comes out and it automatically into the cup pouring through these now the one thing about the cake cups in general is that they oh when it comes out I want to show them show everybody the one thing about the K Cups is I don't think they're environmentally friendly because they're not recyclable it's a lot of plastic so the internet told me that if you put all the cake upset people drink in America together it would go around the world 11 times and look how small these are that's like you know like no no in since the K Cup came out okay or is it in a year I don't know a lot of K Cups sure your house is looking great Peter's house was in a tour and we did a house to our Peters house when like in the some six months oh yeah yeah so we don't have to give the tour no need for to it but check it out it's just like watching water yeah I mean boil it's very boring in a watched pot never boils don't look at it stop stop look Oh Keurig what can we look at what can we look at let's go buddy I told you if you turn away from it nice to work now look how look how weak this look this is an expresso roast I think this is pretty weak don't you think yeah let me put too much water in No seven no it's supposed to be eight eight eight milliliters that is weak coffee for an espresso Rose yeah coming out I know it's not but I found that most of the K cups are like this happy ending there yeah I think the Keurig is the only one it's gonna be happy if we have to drink that all right I'll just hold it up to light man that's like it's like are you serious it's like a British breakfast this is what I have to do this is one of the strongest this is one of this I put in the middle the strongest roasts in Japanese cake up I can't really what does the light go through it that's backlit now let's just say it's weak yeah there it is okay you can see it's almost translucent it's not deep and this is the biggest problem with the cake up now my dad he's the one who said well well you know I only drink a cup of coffee in the morning and at night and I only have one there for the cake up is more efficient than grinding the beans and brewing it with the filter more efficient money-wise and I said well I drink like 10 cups of coffee I don't think this is gonna work yeah each yeah so he has a cup of coffee in the morning morning and at night and at night okay all right here you go the we're on the buddy system are you giving me some of that well I want to ensure you get a funnel okay oh yeah good Cheers we just we have a coffee connoisseur right yeah he's introducing me to all the expensive snobby so you're the one that's injecting poison into their ears calling me a snob hey just because I like know there's some just one viewer who just hate you I know and this one viewer just has like venom when he says Peter that d-bag d-bag the deep its weak yeah I mean it's not bad but it's just not yeah that's weird that's really weird well the difference between that sorry the the nespresso will show you that in a minute but the Nespresso machine which is very cool-looking as well which is why it's so hot in Japan and and also think is it gonna age' all throughout Asia and maybe Europe as well that they have them in Hong Kong - I saw them there but these are the this is the pod again here's the size difference everything in America is bigger everything so I think yeah these ones are much more compressed so the and this is a much stronger blend as well and they come from all over you cannot on the Nespresso site there's you know you can choose and they're pretty reasonable like 1:1 pod is about 70 yen between 79 these are on the internet these are like 60 and they should be 30 yen or less honestly I'm just saying how much is a cup of coffee at a coffee shop I can't what I drink in my house should be 10% of what I'm paying I'm going to the coffee shop for the atmosphere to get out of the house okay if I'm in the house I'm paying less okay but when you're at your house drinking a crappy cup of coffee it makes you want to get out of the house and why does it have to be crapping that's why there's thought to cure egg I'm talking to you see see now now that's why we got tea and that's why in Japan we have green tea and UCC is not the maker of this apparently it's another company but probably partnered with UCC which is a good coffee company I'm just just really disappointed and usually see as cake cups they look cool because they have Japanese on it their weakest heck yeah don't compare to this do you want to see what a real cup of coffee tastes like sure are you serious of course alright the boiled water for this thing do you guys want to try that this one's quite good actually alright do you have another glass that we can put it into after other people yeah I'm gonna dump this out yes please the water we're gonna put it's good this coffee and this and compare the consistency okay this is very scientific yeah sorry your motor skills are very scientific all right so how is there a bite are you big coffee drinkers coffee or tea all right cat the cat is hiding she went people that have aren't around here very often she tends to get scared all right comes off yeah I have a cat I drink out of the head don't use that oh oh you know do we need another glass or no this is cool I just washed it out uh we just need the drinking water dad in here okay so we're going to do this and we can compare the consistency I also have the Starbucks cafe in Verona I'm not really happy with this either they just don't put enough coffee in it it doesn't matter how much how much coffee they put in it maybe it's just weak but it's not bad this is much better than the Japanese the UCC cake Hobson this one is this No Surrender on it so you know it's gonna be dead yeah good all right so I'm gonna put in the same amount as I did last time about this right yeah yeah but do you guys I don't I don't think that 60 yen is a lot for a cup of coffee in fact I would be apt to double it up so they put put a double in there just have a nice strong cup of coffee yeah well here and then you're still a third of the price of going to a coffee shop well you're you're a special man there cuz most people don't got that kind of cash to have shags on the wall yeah yeah I saw that we did a house tour again check out Peters house tour now you know wait thirty yen is enough for a cup of coffee all right it's it's it's like half a cop you can't justify it okay we tease each other if you're watching this for the first time we do this it's just who we are it is Batman so um this is the No Surrender re VV I've never heard of them before but says dark roast and it's the strongest one it's not it could be stronger but it's the strongest one so that's the watch just but how can Barney push it Marty push it everybody they putting Barney on there instead of brew you remember her every morning when you touch it that's true she's a bit scary Barney things coffee all right oh I better put the glass underneath there I did that once I forgot the glass and just kept on had I had the drink luckily there's a reservoir you can sort of save it and put it back into the glass if you it's how long I'm gonna watch the water boil or don't know it's the water boy so yeah everybody's ganky yeah I'm thinking yeah thank you - finally thank you means feeling high feeling good yeah that's a great word it's a great Japanese word yeah I think that's one of the first words all foreigners love earn here thank you this guy danke tada are you okay how you feeling yeah so yeah January has been kind of a tough month yeah health-wise nailed you were in we were gonna do a live stream and at the end of December and you bailed because you were deathly Eren like it's gonna be a party you're gonna have a party at his house are you Annie he got sick and he was on IDs and stuff I think it looked worse than it actually was No or was it that bad I know that wasn't my hand that was somebody else's hands died but did you did you IV yourself no no oh no they went to my my family went to the hospital to get a get checked out and then they where do they have influenza type it that looks pretty weak too but it's much darker look how dark it is compared to the other one looks like coffee coming out this is a massive difference and look yeah right this is a big difference but willing to see motor oil coming out of there yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that's how deep it should be right this Rev is so good and sometimes I put the milk in it before I start oh man this is totally different I know how can you stop it Midway that's right nice no that's my cup pick up pick up pick up the other weak one okay look I'm telling you right now when you can see it right away you can see through this you can't see through this it's just it's a different world no John I can see you yeah very nice all right so let's let's give this a taste test all right oh you still have this in your coffee don't dump this one out all right we're gonna taste it I can already smell the difference and that's that's huge so this is the American so we're doing comparison that between the Japanese a dark roast and the American dark roast this one is obviously oh wait yeah how about sherry in that spill oh okay good oh did I get you that man is here to save the day did get you mister mom here sorry alright alright cheese alright this is good you're back on my Christmas card list now it was that was that bad this is that is good this is good Redemption I love this one the problem is it doesn't exist that this is it like a I got to order this in the US and it cost like like then you got your two dollars a cup is this two dollars a cup you think I don't know what you call my mom right now ask her no no would you pay two dollars a cup for this no for this one yeah at a coffee shop yeah for a order online no no no way that's what are the cost in the states for that particular poem you're gonna do this next okay hang in there is it like under a dollar this one was I got 12 of these I think it was like nine dollars so it's like 1011 what 1,100 yen okay this 12 of these costs 872 yen or about $8 for 12 of these these are working yeah that's covered this one's really nice this one Peter says it's garbage I just say it's a week I don't want to dismiss you see see I mean it's this is their organic blend it's this organic blend is weaker than this okay that's a problem this one's bigger than this that one is weaker than that this one's up yeah it's weaker than this one this is why I gotta live with the K Cups in Japan or weak you unless unless you make even if you make just like a third of a cup it's still so weak that's not good it's that's why this thing man this will wake you up by the way while we're having this coffee I put together this wonderful cheese plate for my honorable guests looks like it's crackers cheese apples and some chicken jerky would you like to try that chicken jerky anyway let's try he will he can't be fool this is Barney's treats this chicken jerky is for cats it says animal at the top I think is this from yesterday no no no you put this out today yes I just just before you kick look at this in grateful get apples of discolored already well okay the Apple wasn't completely fresh but it was only out for a few days ain't for effort a for effort but this I want to introduce this cheese my neighbor Tomoko she's a world traveler old older lady she was in Spain recently and she brought back this cheese and it's made from sheep milk oh wow and it's so good he's very passionate about it yeah well anything in Spain's passionate right that's true but so really awesome try piece do you like um you know that goat's milk sometimes has kind of a funk to it but the sheep's milk it's just there goes JD spilling stuff again sorry oh yeah oh wow that goes really well with not this one we're gonna try now green tea pod this please that'll go well with the blue cheese it's a colorful snack and wine goes good with blue cheese I don't know green tea does but we're gonna try this this was good this is good I like this I don't know like this and you can see right you you can see it right the difference it's really obvious excuse me Batman I have another tissue Oh Batman by the way zookeeper of uh he's the keeper of our tissues you see that over there he here it's a very big thing here they came in boxes of 12 the label for the Japanese brand is called Brewster that's that's like the crew egg blue star through star and we're gonna brew star some of this right now no no I'm not using Tong Tong this for the coffee you can ease Perrier has that ever been done before let's dress yeah awesome probably I just bought this it was just water with gas let's try it anything to spice up these Keurig pieces of this is green tea let's get some real real I hated I thought you wanted to like drink normal water that's what it but I think we stumbled onto something right somebody's said fizzy green tea I think we're onto something oh we're on something one of the two one on a lot of caffeine yeah alright let me get you your your highness your normal water thank you my liege all right all right people are saying no don't do it to your your idea of well feed our ruski says to do busy green tea okay and his name is really super it sounds fizzy fit off easy you see if he super chats us the costs of leasing haha machine alright just for your that might work I would do it alright so we're gonna close this put the water in at the super chance are coming in for the green tea oh look what you've done I'm gonna hold this alright no no it's cool yeah yeah I can measure how much it is by this all right so it's over it's over alright that alright I washed it out is that easy but it's it's it's weak you know I it's it's weak coffee let's see how this green tea works out and then we'll do the fizzy one thank you for the cheese isn't it nice I really like that don't look cause a sweetheart yes can I can I have us blue cheese yes sir it's blue cheese there's crackers here too cracker and day-old apples I knew it I knew it but I've sliced the brown part as you know apples like apples avocados as soon as you cut them they start to turn brown right so I kind of like I was trying to hide the brown part by putting that face down but mr. clever here the same thing great minds think alike all right I got a feeling it's gonna be any second now the good thing about Oh the good thing about the the cake up is if you're watching it to boil it's only boiling 7 ounces of water or what is that like 10 nine milliliters yeah a 90 mm 900 100 and like 100 milliliters maybe so it doesn't take that long well it feels like an eternity well compared to the rest oh we're gonna do that we're gonna do this Linda says feed Barney actually listen we will it's be funny I got the UH so we feed John is this chicken jerky hold on let's come in stems coming all right coming this is green tea coming out of a Craig maker illegally jump noise Chuck Norris's gave it two dollars awesome I'll give you all right we're gonna drink this in honor of everyone who super tatts us before this glass pickles yeah if you can see the green now look it's just turning in almost regular water you see that Wow yeah when there's little pieces of green tea floating in it so it looks authentic ah damn did Dan's in there now it's Shrek's love jahahaah I mean it looks like green tea right cuz green but the last part of it came out is water so I don't think you could do more than seven and a half ounces or like a hundred and what is that like a hundred and fifty milliliters or something mm-hmm do you have a glass to drink this now you can take this out maybe you want to take this out and wash okay we've we've made kind of a mess this is not bad no we made a mess by made him and that's how worthy yeah I did an autopsy and tried to pull it out and figure out how these things work and I just made a big mess at and I still didn't figure it out so I don't recommend you make a mess no I would never do that and ever oh you're gonna do you're gonna be a lot better I told you spelled it to you see one drop no actually okay see Batman excuse me quite impressive right Barney's impressed Lauren if somebody wants you to eat how about we give you some of that dry chicken we have been drinking a lot of coffee can you show the define peeps that's feeding the animals we do that now I'm just gonna give it to on the floor here okay me show - we'll do it we can do meaning I can apologize twice in two days alright so this was the other who was the first appalled remember there was a little incident I got myself in a little pickle yesterday anyways this is green tea from class second West Funk go to Costco and get 120 count box Costco Japan I would totally do that they have a Pacific bowl bid which looks good all right come by I'd recommend you don't smell it before you drink it I just said don't smell it you smell it you know that smells like green tea no it smells like a freshly mowed lawn well that's true right yeah slightly moist it smells like a fresh lease yeah that's a very astute observation those are the kinds of terms that I use when I go to green tea tastings is that a new voice you're tested out yes I can a detective find bouquet of long hmm it's good actually tastes pretty good it's nice I think what I'm learning with the k-cups is Japan does an awesome job with the green tea because they do that right they do not do a good job with the coffee because they don't do that yeah I tend to agree with you on that this Starbucks is nice this Starbucks is the best normal coffee that I had before cake huh and that's not saying a lot in general I don't think the k-cup is is maybe the best cup of coffee but it's by far the most convenient yeah because even with this you have to fiddle around with it open it up put it onto the glass and you got throw it away it's dirty I just take this out pop it up throw it the trash can right save the world are we gonna try this one yeah look let me put some hot water in there you have some more cheese all right how you doing good I'm bad oh well that was fast so it's actually pretty warm outside isn't it today yeah it's nice a nice day okay well let me get let me get the all right Chuck Chuck Norris just shooting again hey thank you Eric we're having a lot of fun brother I had Chuck Norris just get it actually Charles Norris Basara Craig is awesome for a bowl of noodles or instant oatmeal that's it wow that's good too that is actually here we go no but you got to do it more than once you have to do it on manually right it's sort of a pain in the neck well it's kind of a it's a it's a project I could smell it yeah right and it's the thing I don't like about this is that I can't see see it coming out of the machine and doesn't make this pump just like the hump mmm that's the correct hump that's like the high point of your day well it makes me when I hear the hum I know it's a it's a coffee coming dad it's true okay well this one's done all right let's uh pull it out oh is it done that fast that was actually faster than the column the problem with these these ouches yeah it is you have to use a deep coffee cup otherwise it it bought like that Toto over there yeah going to sign up to it any more that they are right now which is a shame because I lugged this all the way from the United States from beds b3 Portland b3 BW from five beds baths and bodies work but I dasn't beyond as a gift now again I gotta put this on my counter and I'm not sure if I have the space however when it comes to fun there's nothing like closing it down and hearing that crow egg on top of that little capsule making the hole in there and then having the coffee coming on it is kind of a delight to do that I like the colors that they have in little pods it's kind of fun all the colors and the brands but they don't have that here in Japan so it for me I'm gonna have to go along with just regular filtered coffee drip that's what I do I buy the beans in bulk from Costco and I put it in and I just drew it now they have the vacuum they have the vacuum coffee pots so it always stays hot and yeah so I might get one of those and that's probably the best option it's environmentally
