let's talk about dentur s 19's new tool the film look Creator and the biggest question lately is it actually better than the hens Pros third party plug-in well the answer might not be as simple as you think so in order to test the idea I went ahead and grabbed some clips from a recent trip I took to the high Steel Bridge on the Olympic National Forest over in Washington super cool place you should definitely visit if you get a chance to the footage was shot on a Canon R5 on the clog 3 collar profile at Sunset so we get those golden L tones and the greens out there just hit different to be honest to get the most out of this test we need to set a couple ground rules number one we'll only use one node which is whatever node that the film look Creator or dehancer plug-in will be placed on this means that we have to create a look entirely within each plugin and because the hand is the plugin being challenged we will create a look there first and see if and how we can achieve the same within the film look Creator so let's begin we start by choosing our hero shot and loading up the hand on our first and only note now I won't be diving too in depth into the answer because I already have a video where I do that and if you'd like to watch it you can do so by clicking up here so instead I'll quickly walk you through what I did to get this look so the color space transform tab in theher is really straightforward it lets you choose the specific camera that you shot with and the collar space or format the very next thing I did after that was choose my film emulation and I personally love fuji color Pro 400h so I chose that then I went to the expand tab to make our contrast adjustments and then I went down to the print film Tab and chose fuif film 3513 print film to complement my film emulation of choice I didn't do much else here other than do more substractive saturation or lower the overall color density I also checked the analog range limiter then I went to the color head Tab and I pushed the image towards yellow magenta and sign as well as push some blues into the Shadows warmer tones into the midtones and cool down the highlights a bit that's it I did not add any halation effects I and add grain or any of the other effects that the hanser offers because I do feel like they are superior and I've broken down the halation feature in the hanser and the Vinci on a video which you can watch by clicking up here this is the look that we arrived at with the hander the fact that I did this in one Noe alone is pretty wild to begin with but with that said I wouldn't do that on a professional project I would also want more control over certain things like skin tones substractive saturation power windows and things of that sort in addition to dananer so let's take a look at the new film look Creator from The Venture resolve 19 and I think it's important to point out that this tool is currently in beta as of April 2024 so right away the first thing that we'll notice is that both plugins look very similar in a sense that they have the same user interface nothing fancy or flashy no logos or branding elements you have your first few tabs for your color Corrections and color grading and downstream you got your effects and all of these are simplified integrated versions of the Venture solves native effects like halian and grain at the very top you have a couple presets you can choose from and they all kind of suck to be honest because they don't actually give you a look they just give you a starting point the Cinematic preset actually adds black bars to the top and bottom of your footage then you have the popular bleach bypass nostalgic is kind of cool if you're into that retrofilm Vibe and then you have no effects and the option to just customize it yourself which is what I chose to start with you also get some sliders which you can use to dial back color or effect separately then I think the 3D L compatible check mark will disable any of effects and allow you to export your color adjustments as a lot so that you can just drag and drop then on the next tab for color space overrides you have the basic color space transform that you're used to getting from the Venture res which I feel like a lot of people tend to find it confusing but basically we have the input color space which will be the color space of your footage and input gamma the color profile then you will choose your output color space which will be Rec 79 in our output gamma which will be gamma 2.4 now I'm not going to lie I spent a good amount of of hours through trial and error trying to color grade this footage to match what I got in the answer in just a couple minutes some of that was because aside from the usual color correction sliders that you're used to getting you also get some stylized ones so you have exposure contrast and highlights fade for your shadows white balance which is actually based off the chromatic adaptation tool and then you have tint and you also get a skin bias which is meant to only adjust the skin portion of your image which technically speaking is whatever falls close to the skin tone line when looking at a vector scope or in the color spectrum between the color red and yellow so you can increase the highlights or bring them down to correct anything that might have been done by the other General tool sliders now I also have a video on substractive saturation that you can watch over here to understand that but basically it acts just like the color density slider inhancer richness is just a straightforward saturation and then bleach bypass which is a technique that deserves its own video where I go over it but basically another way of desaturating your image while adding contrast now for the split tone tab once again I'll make a separate video where I go more in depth into it but this tool is pretty similar to how the color head Works within dehancer except de hanser makes it much easier and intuitive by giving you the colors you're working with and separating or masking them so you know when you're pushing them into the Shadows midtones or highlights so you have three sliders amount Hue angle and pivot this is essentially the way you get different variations of the teal and orange look now if you're you're not familiar with how split toning works I would try to be very subtle with the adjustments that you make as it can break your image pretty fast a good practice I like to do is go to the amount slider push it all the way to see what the effect is and then dial it back to my desire intensity when we do that and we have everything else set to a default then we can see it's adding warmth onto our highlights and blue into our shadows when adjusting Hue angle if you look at your vector scope while you move the slider you can see what it's doing in real time as well as looking at your image you'll see that the colors it's adding to the highlights and shadows are complimentary and this is a great and popular way to build a look for your color grade then pivot will push whichever one of the complimentary colors to the extreme if you move the slider all the way or when you dial it back simply increasing the teal or orange in your image and this is the before and after of our final image and this is what it looks like compared to what we got in the hander this is what the same exact color adjustments look like on other clips for reference with only exposure adjustments made differently so you may wonder what's the verdict and well the conclusion that I arrived at is that the film look Creator from The Venture resolve 19 is not a film stock emulation in fact it's not even trying to be this is simply black Magic's way of providing you with a tool that can help you create a filmic look and for that reason can't entirely compete in the same space as theher because theher is a film stock emulation plug-in so if you ask is there a clear winner you're the only person that can answer that once you try both but the matter of the fact is that both plugins are really great and both plugins have their own place within different workflows if you're trying to build a color grade that resembles film in some ways then you have the free option of denture resolve 19 and if you want to go the extra mile and go for the film stock emulation then you have the henser pro I hope you guys enjoyed this video and if you learned something drop a comment like subscribe to the channel and I'll check you guys in the next one peace
