hey guys I'm Danny your friendly neighborhood colorist and in this video we are going to be looking at the film look Creator in the wici resolve 19 from a technical standpoint so in this video I'm going to go through what is the film load Creator effect a short comparison with dehancer which is a film emulation plug-in a complete breakdown of all the functions in the film Lo Creator effect and so lastly my issues with it so right off the bat I want to address the question of what the film look Creator is from the D Vinci resolve 19 new features guide you can look up the film look Creator effect and Blackmagic design describes the film Lo Creator to gives you the ability to easily alter both color and physical properties of an image to mimic Motion Picture film stock in a single resolve effect so that's exactly what the film look Creator is it's one effect that you can slap on in one note and then try to mimic film stocks so they continue to say this effect is not focused on emulating a specific manufacturer's film stock rather it creates a base Blackmagic film stock which can be manipulated in variety of creative ways so there you go it's not trying to emulate kodc 23 tree or kodc Vision tree film stocks in a color accurate way it's simply trying to give you a film profile that you can create on your own and trick it in your own way rather than give you an accurate film stock emulation if you want to do that you still have to use the huner because they have the most extensive and accurate film stock emulation for the winci and Premier Pro users so I think this solves the rumor that deaner is going out business because the res 19 has this film load Creator they both have their own use cases but I do appreciate the option to use the film load Creator if you are not try trying very hard to emulate a particular film stock and moving on to the next paragraph many of the components of the film look Creator have specific counterparts in the resolve FX Library however the film look Creator combines these film look tools into a single resolve effect with a greatly simplified tool set so all the tools that are available in the film look Creator effects is already available in the previous the wici resolve version 16 18.6 so they just simplified the settings within the film green halation flicker film gate and everything else to a few parameters so that it's more simple and more practical to use and let's move on to the next paragraph which highlights a very important thing if you have used the film look Creator before so when this effect is applied an underlying Blackmagic film look is automatically set first this film look is driven by over 60 parameters that you get with the plug-in active and all effects off so these parameters are fine-tuned and baked in to the Blackmagic film St so from this paragraph we know that whenever you use the film look Creator there is already a Blackmagic film stock baked in so you can use the tools in the film Lo Creator separately without applying this Blackmagic film stock and to me this is a pretty big disappointment because there are some tools in the film look creator that I would want to use individually so I do hope in a future update they will add a checkbox to have the option to turn on and off this Blackmagic film stock and the last thing about the film look Creator is that it's designed for scen referred workflows and will work with any camera source and output display when using either resolve color management or Asus this happens automatically because the plug-in uses the timeline color space for input and output by default so if you're using resolve color management and doing color Management on a project level it will automatically detect the timeline color space for you but if you're using something like a CST to do your color management you can also manually choose the transform of the source footage and choose the display transform which you can do within the plug-in with the color space overr right section now let's jump into resolve so you can find your film look Creator effects in the effect pallet up here and go down to resolve effects film emulation there you can see you have your film grain film damage and the other film emulation techniques so you have your film load Creator and you can drag it into a particular note and here you can find some presets that are made by the wici resolve we have the default 65 mm 35 mm cinematic which will add Lether box for you and you have a bleach bypass uh preset for you also and you have nostalgic which makes this tiny box so all these presets will have all the settings already baked in but if you do want to make manual adjustments you can just choose custom or maybe let's start with a default 65 mm first in the color blend you will see that you can control the opacity of the color effects maybe not in this clip let's go to my next clip which is this color clip so if I copy over the same note right so if I reduce the color blend you can see that it doesn't affect the colors as much like this which is 0% and we also have an effects blend which will reduce the effects like Hali Bloom grein and flicker but I'm not quite sure how you want to reduce the effects without having it to look a bit artificial so usually for the effects we will go with 100% which is 1.0 and another interesting thing about this is that you can choose the option for 3D L compatible so so if you're familiar with making 3D LS LS can contain special effects such as grain Bloom halation and also vignette so if you're creating a lot for other programs or your camera Hardware if you input a lot into your monitor you can check this box to only allow the color information to go through so moving on to the color space override section is where you input your color space for color management like in this case this was a shot on a Sony footage if I were to do my color space override I would go for input color space let's go for Sony S gamry C on Sony S log3 into rex9 and Gamma 2.4 all right so something like this and it will help you to do color management for your footage without using a cstd but if you choose to use a CST you can also do something like this which is from a CST of Sony S gamma 3C S3 to rex9 gamma 2.4 then in your film look Creator what you can do is go from rex9 gamma 2.4 and output to rex9 gamma 2.4 if you don't set this properly then it won't look the same and if I go into my project color Management in my settings down here you can see that I'm still working in the timeline color space of the win white gamut and because I'm on the Mac so I'm outputting to Rex 98 so that is still my overall project level color management so moving on to the color settings we have exposure contrast highlights fade which is pretty interesting it adjusts the row off of the bottom of the S curve allowing you to rain or expand the darkest areas so if we test it out on the this gray scale you can see that the bottom area here Rises up to a pretty nice fade so this kind of mimics the film emulation and another tool that I find quite interesting is this white balance tool because it doesn't really react like the temperature slider that we have in our primaries so if I slide this white balance to the top you can see that it only affects around this area without affecting the blacks and also the whites and if I try it on a normal clip like this you can see that it affects the clip sort of in a photochemical way instead of a very digital kind of white balance if I use my temperature slider over here so it's slightly different from the usual temperature slider and if I move it towards the coder area you can see that it only affects this part over here without affecting the whites so this is pretty useful and it's a very interesting tool set that we can use this outside of the film look Creator effect so from the update manual it says that this control uses the chromatic aberration to mimic what the source footage might look like if it was sh in different lighting conditions adjusted in degrees of Kelvin right so that's for the white balance and as for the tint it also reacts the same way which is it affects the areas down here without affecting the whites and the blacks so the next thing that is pretty interesting is this skin bias slider it allows you to adjust your skin tone if you slide it towards the negative your skin tones will become warmer darker and more saturated opposed to if you slide it towards the positive area you'll get a Rosy brighter and less saturated skin tones so if I move it back and forth you can see there's a stock darker skin and lighter Rosier skin and below that we have subtractive saturation so if you're familiar with additive and subtractive saturation usually we'll use a HSV saturation technique to mimic subtractive saturation but right now we have a slider so I it's said that this is also unavailable outside of the film look Creator so this will help you to add saturation without adding luminance so the more saturated you you go it won't become bright and artificial like a very digital sort of saturation the next tool is also pretty interesting which is richness it will only add saturation to the already saturated areas so I can demonstrate subtractive saturation and richness by using this color chart so if I so if I add subtractive saturation you'll see that the saturation will become very dense and it doesn't add to the luminance instead of if I use the saturation slider in my primaries it will add to the luminance of it like you can see over here and also for richness it will add saturation in the more saturated areas which is this middle area over here so if I push it up you see that only around this middle area where it's more saturated it will add to the saturation and lastly we have an effect which is bleach bypass so I have a bleach bypass tutorial that you can check out and it simulates a well-known look by adding a desaturated higher contrast version of the image onto itself so you will do something like a let me show you over here it will add contrast and also desaturate for very bold look used for war films so that's all for the color settings and moving down to split tone which is also a new tool sadly not available outside of of the film look Creator if I turn on my split tone I can very easily create a teal and orange sort of look if I go into my compound Noe and turn it on so you can see what's being added it's a very nice split between this teish and also this orangey uh highlights and I also can adjust for the Hue angle which will push the Hues of different colors so you can get a very nice mixture of different split tone colors complimentary colors like green and purple or what else do we have purple and green this is interesting right so you can adjust for the heel of it and you can also pivot where you want the split tone to start in an image so for an image like this we can do the split tone and then pivot it more towards the teal or more towards the orange this is a very useful tool and I do hope that this is available outside of the film load Creator effect so for the rest of the effects I'm not going to bore you with it we have vignette Hali Bloom grain flicker gate wave film gate which adds the sort of aspect ratios and you can do different aspect ratios and you can even manually adjust for the ratios as well Bel you can also add a padding if you want to mimic some sort of film frame film gate as they call it and lastly we also have a global blend for whatever case you want to reduce the opacity of this film load Creator so all of these are in the usual the wici resolve studio version effects so I'm not going to bore you with that in my next video I'm going to go through how I use the film look Creator effect to create a believable realistic shot on film look which is kind of the main function of this effect instead of trying to emulate a particular film stop so I hope you enjoy this one and I'll see you guys in the next one bye-bye
