be an introduction video for Inkscape and we're doing it live hello Amy so just to make sure we have everything set up correctly before we get started talking about Inkscape if you can hear me if everything is going well let me know hopefully my words hell okay are matching up with my mouth moving all those settings I'm hoping they're alright hello Karen and today a little Lisa today we're going to be doing an introduction video on Inkscape yesterday I posted a poll on my facebook if you haven't joined me over on Facebook there is a link in the description box that will bring you over to my facebook I love it if you'd follow me there hello everybody great everything is going good good if you would like to follow me over there on Facebook I'm also going to try to be more present over there and do more lives on my Facebook's this year I can take this out if everything is going good and be more present over here on YouTube as well and it's Monday morning I have my coffee before we get started I just want to let you know that I posted a poll over on my facebook and asked about Inkscape and who was interested in learning more about Inkscape and what it can do for you as a creative as a quilter as a creative in your studio in your art world and I had a lot of interest so far the pool is running for six more days if you want to take the poll but yeah that's what we're going to do today so I'm going to just hang out with you for a second before we get started lesson people come in and we can chat for a minute and then I'm gonna tell you about all the things that Inkscape can do if you've never heard about it if you're interested in downloading it it is a free software that you can download I'll put a link in the description box for you you can go download that also in the description box I have a playlist I've already created a few videos on Inkscape because the interest on Inkscape is so high I'm gonna start doing some tutorials and we might do them live if this goes well and that way if you have questions you can ask me directly and maybe we can cover it in the lives so yeah that's what we're doing this morning well I'm so happy to see everybody here so as we get started everyone that is here have you heard of escape you use Inkscape and is that something that you think right now if you've never heard of it that you might be interested in also if this is your first time joining me on my channel I would love it if you subscribe I do all kinds of genres of creative things here on my channel but what's a strong focus on a quilting and making t-shirt quilts memory quilts art quilts applique all that fun stuff that's my main focus but then we also do some journaling we make journals we do multimedia type of projects we do vinyl cutting we do I'm going to be doing a screen printing this year and how you can incorporate screen printing into your quilting world exciting stuff so if you have not subscribed yet I would love it if you do that and if you're watching this on the replay I'm so glad you're here feel free to comment down below I try to be really active here on my youtube channel and I'll get back to you as soon as I see your question or your comment so we have some interest on Inkscape never heard of Inkscape but it sounds fun I'm going to tell you all the stuff that it can do for you yes we want to learn Inkscape okay good so let me go ahead and go into the intro and I'm going to have this on my playlist and so if you're watching this on the replay you must be interested in learning how to use Inkscape and i'm going to tell you some of the things that it can do for you let's say you are a quilter and have a bunch of notes so that I can stay on topic and if you have questions and I don't see them in a live chat you might have to type it out again because we'll come back and we'll chat before we end today's video so who would like to be able to design their own quilts nope nope let me back up let's talk about what Inkscape is getting ahead of myself Inkscape is a vector-based designing graphic software okay it's unlike and Photoshop Excel and word and all of those where those software's are based on pixels a vector image or an SVG or what Inkscape does is a sizable vector I have this written down aisel vector graphic okay so you can make your graphic as big as you want and it never loses quality and yes it stays perfect unlike if you take a BMP file like a picture or a logo or text and you resize it larger when you print that it's going to look fuzzy around the edges so that's what the difference is okay that's what Inkscape does and it works with lines and curves and what we call nodes and to put it simple a node is let's say a node is like pitstops on a road trip that's the easiest way that I could put it your nodes are going to tell let's say you have a silhouette or a cricket or a brother scanncut or some type of cutting soft machine the nodes in your design tell your blade where to go on your roadmap so we're working with nodes and lines and curves in Inkscape and it's going to tell your cutting machine from beginning to end along the road trip where to go to cut out your design so that's what Inkscape does and now I can tell you as a quilter what it can do for you if you would like to learn how to use the software now there is quite a bit of a learning curve but tons and tons and tons of tutorials here on YouTube and plus I'm going to start making some and explaining it in my way which might hopefully be helpful to you and in doing these lives I hope that if you have questions and you're learning the software we can talk like we're in the same room and it'll be sort of like a one-on-one class with you on Inkscape now as a quilter if you'd like to learn how to design your own quilts you can using scape what if you're someone who would like to make your own quilt patterns maybe you're a quilter who would like to open an Etsy shop and offer applique designs maybe you don't want to get into selling designs but you want to be able to make your own applicator pne's and trace them or cut them out with a cutting machine you can do that with Inkscape you can print text and photos and images you can create quilt labels you can design your own fabric all of that can be done with Inkscape as a quilter and those are ways that you could incorporate this free software into your quilting world so let's say you're a quilter or someone else who is a creative and wondering how you could incorporate Inkscape into your studio you can let's see let me go to my notes so I don't forget anything and I probably still will with Inkscape you can create stencils and so with your stencils you can do screen printing scrapbooking journaling painting mixed-media type of projects really you're only limited by your imagination you can also create cutting files for vinyl let's say you want to create a mug for a t-shirt like this on my ute on my facebook channel i went live Saturday night and we had a little party and I created my very first shirts with some heat transfer vinyl and I created my logo and Inkscape so you can create cutting files you can cut out paper and cardstock vinyl cork board poster all kinds of stuff that you can operate a cutting machine with you can create your images in Inkscape you can create PDFs you can create BMP files and you can create your own logos for thumbnails and memes and webpages all kinds of stuff let's see you can create images let's say you're learning how to digitize embroidery you can create SVG's or files that you can import into your embroidery digitizing software like in brilliance and digitize your own embroidery and you can start in Inkscape with an SVG let's see some of the file extensions and this is just some of them that you can save your work as would be a PDF like all of my patterns that you can find here on my youtube channel my free quilt patterns my cheat sheets my grid sets for t-shirt quilts all of the patterns that you found you can find in my Etsy shop those were all created in Inkscape so you can create PDFs you can create PNG files if you work with those at all DXF files HTML for web pages SVG cutting files for all of your cutting machines BMP wmf i don't know what that stands for I've never used that before but there's a ton or extensions that you can save your work as to work in all different genres of cutting machines web pages whatever you can think of and so that is just a mind dump of Woodall Inkscape can do and like I said you're really only limited by your imagination and what I would like to do is start a whole series so there is a link in the description box to the playlist I do have a few videos already that you can reference and get started with but we're starting at the very basics this is the intro and just some of the ways that you can use Inkscape I think I've covered everything as far as what all it can do so if you are here live and you have any questions we can sit and hang out for a little bit that would be fun and no it is not only for cutting machines you can create your own applications by creating a PDF so let me do this let me pull up Inkscape on the screen so you can see what the software looks like so give me a second I will not be able to see your comments but I'll come back to them let's see here you're gonna see some screens changing around as I shift everything okay it's going to look a little crazy for a second and I'm going to pull up yes Inkscape so there we are when you download Inkscape and you install it it'll walk you through a setup process it's pretty easy to do it walks you step-by-step on what to do and when you open Inkscape on default this is what it looks like okay so you have lots of tools and it's going to look really confused and you know I don't really have a set schedule as when we're going to do these tutorials I think as the interest comes in and topics and questions come in and I have a few minutes we're going to turn on the computer we're going to open up Inkscape and we're going to start tackling some of the things and the questions and all of the things that Inkscape can do but this is what your workspace looks like you have all kinds of drawing tools text tools yeah it looks a little intimidating however you know if you want to get started right away there are hundreds of videos on Inkscape that show you from the beginning what to do if you cannot wait for me but if you want to go ahead and get started you can download Inkscape like I said it is free and install it onto your computer start playing around with it get familiar with the layout of all of the tools play around with creating some circles all kinds of fun stuff so that's what the screen looks like let's see let me go back to here we go not quite sure I think that looks a little bit fuzzy I do believe that there is an Inkscape for Mac as well if my screen is fuzzy I do apologize it looks fuzzy on my end so I'm not sure if it's if it's fuzzy or not it could be my internet connection Conny it's a free software that you can download I've put a link in the description box of this video but if you google Inkscape you'll see a webpage come up that is called Inkscape org that's the website that you go to to get the software Oh Kim says there is an extension called pink stitch that allows you to digitize your escape designs into a machine embroidery file alright Kim I'm writing that down because that's the first time I've heard of that see we're always learning something new tension called stitch all right I'm writing this down thank you for sharing that Kim can you use Inkscape from an iPad I do not have an iPad but I believe that you can hmm maybe on at YouTube you can in the search bar type in downloading Inkscape on an iPad and see if something comes up I wish I could help you with that but I've never even used an iPad so I'm not any help there I'm sorry Debbie says the Inkscape screen looked like it was in a different language yes and I will say okay I've used Inkscape for 12 years so I can easily and quickly navigate through it but I really feel like it's with its that way with any type of genre of feel that you went to learn you sit down at a sewing machine and you look at all the stitches and all the settings and it looks like that's in another language too and it really takes some hands-on to learn the software but I think hands-on in tutorials we can walk you through opening up the software to actually creating something and so what I would like to do is be able to in future videos create an easy like BMP image or a JPEG that's a free downloadable and you can open that up in Inkscape and work right with me with the same image stuff like that show you how to turn it into a cutting file show you how to turn it into a traceable applique pattern and print it off and then you'd have your own custom one-of-a-kind applique pattern or how to send that into your cutting software if you want to use your cutting machine yeah all kinds of stuff I want to show you how you can use Inkscape to design your own quilts I think that would be a lot of fun so yeah that's some of the things that we're going to be doing with Inkscape in future tutorials but really the interest from my facebook page and the poll that's running right now is that a lot of people haven't even ever heard of Inkscape and they weren't sure if they'd be interested in tutorials because they didn't know exactly what it would do and my screen looks funny let me change over my screen that looks crazy right I also want to get used to uhh doing live videos and switching screens around so that's one of my goals for this new year is getting comfortable doing the lives switching some screens showing some software showing some tutorials on how to use it and be able to answer your questions in real time and show you and Inkscape how to do exactly what you want to learn and so yes ah Thank You Vicky for sharing this I appreciate that a lot if you have missed the introduction I talked about different ways that you can incorporate Inkscape into your quilting world into your studio let's say you make journals and let's say you've spent $100 on little stencils that you can bullet journal with little fun banner stencils and box stencils and circle stencils did you know you could create those yourself with cardstock or your laminator if you have a laminator if you don't you could just create your own stencils with cardstock you could do that with Inkscape yes so if you're a journal or that's some of the ways that you could use Inkscape let's say you want to print your own a fabric let's say you want to make a quilt label and you want it to have dates and names and little flower designs on it and a background color and you don't want it to lose any print quality if you scale it to a certain size you can do that with Inkscape let's see I don't know if any of you have seen this was some of them some of the first videos that I did on my YouTube channel we did the love-letter digital kit and in that kit has several different files where you can print backgrounds like hearts and script writing on fabric and you can actually print that on fabric you can do that in Inkscape you can create your own fabric so there's just no end to the possibilities of what Inkscape can do for you and it's a really powerful software yes there's a learning curve but I feel like with all of the resources here on YouTube that if you have questions you should be able to find an answer relatively quickly and that's what I'm hoping this series will do and I would like to do this whole series live so that if you have questions and you catch me live we can interact like we're sitting in the same room and I can answer your questions in real time each one of the videos will have specific things that we're learning about and then we'll be able to chat and answer questions along with the video and that's what we're doing can I use it to design a poster based on a a painting of a poem that I wrote absolutely you could do that the one thing I like about Inkscape is that all of your graphics that you design are scalable without losing print quality unlike if you created a logo like that is 4 inches by 4 inches in a software like Word or Excel or Photoshop things like that those are all pixel-based images and when you resize them you lose a lot of the quality the edges get fuzzy and you lose a lot of the crispness if you resize your image where an Inkscape because it's all math based software you can resize your image you could put it on the side of a building and it would not lose the quality of the image and so that's one of the reasons why I love Inkscape Rita asked do I set a timer for these live chats in this new year I have several things that I have structured like the creative crew chat that we do on Facebook is always on Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. I also go live on my own personal Lisa at Cape Anne quilts Facebook page but that's just randomly as I have a few minutes and went to chat or show you something and these Inkscape tutorials will also unfortunately for right now be random because I'll be fitting them in in between my commissioned quilts in between making other tutorials and so no there's not really a set time where you can say all Monday morning she's going to be alive with an escape tutorial however if you miss it there's a playlist in the description box you can save the playlist and come back and check if you are subscribed and you hit the bell notification you'll see on your home page on YouTube that I've posted a new video and you can check it out whenever you get a chance eventually I would like to set a specific time but for now it's just going to be random as time allows and hopefully it'll be frequently so that we're not forgetting from one lesson to the next what we learned the last time right but that's the beauty of a YouTube is that if you did forget you can always pull up the video and revisit a topic Ella escape is free I've put a link in the description box of this video or you can google Inkscape or type in the search bar and your web browser Inkscape org and the web page should come up so it's easy to find and it is completely a free software I'm going to take a sip of my coffee before it gets cold you do not have to have a cutting software it does so many other things besides making cutting files you can create PDFs like if you have let's say see the quilt behind me let faith rise that is a free quilt pattern on my youtube channel you can find that video and download the PDF it comes with templates that you can trace and cut out to your applique I created that whole quilt pattern and Inkscape so you can design your own appliques create tracing applique files save them as a PDF and then print them out unlimited numbers of times if you are someone let's say this year you are a quilter with a hundred ideas on applique and you want to start offering your one-of-a-kind applique and an Etsy shop as a additional revenue and source for you and your business or your household you can do that with Inkscape the sharing that knowledge yeah we go live on the creative crew group that's on Facebook Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time so of course that's going to vary depending on where you are but yes 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time if you have not joined the creative crew group you can find that by going to Lisa Kipp and quilts on Facebook and then there's a little blue box that says visit group you click on that and it brings you over if you're not a member already it's going to ask you two security questions and then you're approved and there's so many helpful people over there if you have real live questions not only about quilting painting crochet knitting all kinds of genres of creating more than likely there's going to be someone who can answer your question really quickly because it's a group of over 2,000 members who absolutely feel like family and we're only here to offer confidence excitement enthusiasm support yeah and help so we love to raise each other up we love to celebrate accomplishments with projects and we go live on Tuesday evenings 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time let's see I'm just going to read through some of the comments and questions if I've missed your question and you have one that maybe I can answer before we go about Inkscape or some of the ways that you can use Inkscape you can ask now if I've missed it you just reading through [Music] you okay I think that's all the questions and I want to try to keep these lives focused and so you're not just wasting time and you're busy busy day with my rambling on so I will have notes and prompts to help keep me focused and on point with these escape tutorials in the future we will have topics we're gonna start off really basic like creating circles rectangles and stars things like that will create maybe a hexagon if you like doing a per piece English paper piecing hexagons I'll show you how you can print your own that'll be fun you could print them out on cardstock and cut them out all by hand or I'll show you how to turn it into a cutting file and your silhouette or cricket or brother scan and cut will cut out all your hexyz for you we're gonna cover all that but in the purpose of keeping these videos on point direct and just packed full of information that you can rewatch and take notes with we're going to keep this live very short so thank you so much for joining me again if you have any questions you can leave them in the comment section below if you haven't subscribed and you're interested in all the ways that Inkscape can help you make sure to do that and click the bell notification that way you get notified when I post or go live it'll let you know and if you have questions write them down save them for the next live if you want to have some one-on-one question-and-answer time that would be great and yes 2020 I'm looking forward to learning so much this year we're going to be doing some screen printing we can create our screen printing stencils in Inkscape so yes it's packed full of stuff we're gonna have a lot of fun this year we're gonna be doing some quilts we're gonna be doing some t-shirt quilts I have a t-shirt quilt with sashing tutorial that's coming up sometime at the end of next week we're doing a mystery quilt Fridays our next video so I cannot wait to see you thank you so much for joining me if I've missed your question and the comments section in the live chat I'm so sorry I'm trying to get used to doing the lives so y'all be patient with me you can repost your question down below in the comment section and I look forward to seeing you let's see I know I'll see you Friday for the
