good morning good morning good morning how are you doing this morning or starting early this morning I'm always unsure what all is recording before the little green light goes live yesterday I did a live video and I just sat there staring at the screen for a few seconds it was not green yet how are you this morning it is Tuesday we're coming live with an Inkscape beginners tutorial we're going live so if you have a chance and you have questions about xscape and you can catch me live I'll try to help you out and allo good morning and yeah it's very early in the morning so if you're on your way to work or you have a busy morning but you want to catch this video and you're watching on the replay make sure to ask your questions in the comment section below and I'll try to be really quick and getting back to you and helping you out with your questions good morning everyone hello today we're gonna do a very yes I know right we're gonna do a very basic tutorial on Inkscape now yesterday I did a video and introduction about what Inkscape is where you can find it if you are new to Inkscape and want to download it it's a free download a link is in the description box and we're going to talk about that here in a second and I told you some of the things that Inkscape can do for you as a quilter or as a creative as an artist as someone who wants to create something what Inkscape can do for you some of the ways that it can work for you some of the questions I had yesterday in the introduction video and if you missed that video it's in the playlist I'll link to the playlist is down below as well when you go to Inkscape org there are several different versions to download and that can be confusing the version I am using and that you'll see today is zero point 9:1 a few months ago I did upgrade to the newest and latest version however it was too much for my computer it was bogging down my system and I had to remove an uninstall Inkscape and put it back on and I am using using version 0.9 one that works really well on my system so if you have downloaded the newest and latest version and you're experiencing some issues like it's bogging down or freezing up you might want to uninstall and go with a later version that might be helpful for you it does work on iPads it does work with Macs and several different operating systems and so yeah you can read about it on Inkscape org so I just wanted to cover that real quick before we get started today we're going to be working with basic shapes like circles and rectangles stars and hexagons we're going to go over a couple of features and tools in Inkscape that might help you out and we're gonna try to keep it really simple today because many of you have never even seen Inkscape or you've already downloaded it and it's like you don't know where to start so we're gonna start with some basic shapes today we're gonna do some fill and Stroke we're gonna make a cutting file and we're gonna make a file that you could print or applique templates and you could also print it on fabric if you wanted to oh yes this is great for quilters it's great for people who do scrapbooking it's great for people who are multimedia type of artists and want to create stencils all kinds of stuff we're going to show you the very basics today so before I switch some screens around and pull up in scape I want you to know that while we're alive if you have questions please feel free to answer and we might be able to have like a one on one that like little Inkscape class if I miss your question because I won't be able to see the comments while we're doing the tutorial and you can hang around until the end feel free to repeat the question if I miss it and if I miss it all together please ask in the comment section below this video after it is processed and up on my page because I don't want to miss your questions okay and I'm still getting used to moving all the screens around here on YouTube and I certainly don't want to ignore your questions or accidentally miss them hello everyone it's so great to see you all good morning I've been up since 3:30 this morning our Kido had a migraine we ended up in the emergency room so she is much better now she is asleep so I'm trying to keep it down some so alright we're going to go ahead and not to chat so much today let just reminding you there is a playlist in the description box I have a few minutes cape tutorials are ready on my channel and then there's the introduction and what Inkscape is all about the live from yesterday is there as well so you can check that out when you have a chance so let's go ahead and move some screens around let's see you things are going to look a little crazy for a second as I transition over you and the first thing we're going to do is pull up Inkscape and let me just make sure that I'm not in the way here yep I'm in the bottom corner yay okay so let's say you just today downloaded Inkscape or maybe you downloaded it yesterday after seeing the introduction video and you thought it might be something that you could use again I'm using version at 0.91 and this is what the interfacing and all the tools look like once you open up the software on default the first thing you're going to notice is a little box right in the middle of your screen hmm pardon me I have my morning voice this morning that is your page so let's talk about that for a second before we begin with the shapes the whole canvas the whole white area is your working space you can go up to file right up here on this top corner document properties and right under display you can show or hide your little box if that is getting in your way while you are designing it's just a little toggle switch you can turn on and off up above it is a box that says page size this page if you want to print your templates or you want to print whatever design you've created everything you want to print needs to fit within that box but you can change to us letter size a4 legal size and a whole bunch of other ranges of sizes you can even customize your size right and custom size and it works in inches and pixels and feet centimeters millimeters whatever kind of document size you want to work in you can do that right in the custom size let me get a mint because my voice is so scratchy this morning for this tutorial because I feel like this box is going to be a distraction and really get in the way I'm gonna go ahead and just hide the box it's there but it's not there okay so anytime you want to do that you can go to file document properties and hide your box or change the size of your box once the box is gone you have a complete blank empty canvas to work on now what I've done is already prepared a working tutorial for you today let me close these boxes so today we're going to go over the basic shapes we're going to I'm going to show you how to make a hexagon circle square rectangle and stars I'm going to show you how you can fill your shapes with colors and gradients I'm going to show you how you can turn these shapes into a cutting file if you have a cutting machine and you want to cut out vinyl or fabric or paper I'll show you that today I'm going to go over the align and distribute which is a really handy tool I'm going to show you how you can join shapes and combine them just like we've done down here in the Snowman we started with two circles and we combined them into one complete shape and then we're going to save our snowman we're going to create one together here in just a minute as an applic applique template like what you see here and then we're also going to save it as an SVG cutting file for those of you who have cutting machines so that's everything we're going to cover today let's start by going all the way over to the left side of the screen that you see several different icons here these are all different tools within your software and just keep in mind I cannot see your comments while we're doing this so just know I'm not ignoring you and we'll come back and chat at the end if you have to leave because it's a busy morning leave your questions in the comment section on the replay okay we're gonna start with our basic toolbar that's right on the left side of the screen the arrow is the Select and transform objects so you can go within your design and click on each one and that's the object that you're working with once it's selected right below the arrow is to edit pass by nodes we'll go over that here in just a minute the little wavy box I never ever mess with that I cannot even tell you what it does I'm sure it does fabulous things I just never use it you have zoom in or zoom out the little magnifying glass if you click on that and select an object and left-click on your mouse you'll go in towards the object let's then go back there we go a little ruler underneath is a measurement tool and you can play around with that a very first shape we're going to come to is the create rectangles and squares so let's go ahead and click on that and we're gonna scoop the screen over a little bit so I have some drawing room let's go down a little bit there we go now one thing I want you to keep in mind and this can be a little frustrating and confusing for anyone who is completely new to Inkscape Inkscape even when you close it out remembers the settings that you last used within each one of the tools so you'll see here I'm going to select an area on my drawing surface I'm going to right click on my mouse and just drag a shape out with the right mouse click you can adjust the shape of yours you can make a square you can make a rectangle you can make it however long skinny wide just like this mine is showing up red because that's the last setting that I used when I created another file ok yours is going to show up either all solid black or a black outline and I can't quite remember what the default of Inkscape is I'm going to show you how you can alter that here in just a second okay so that is our square and rectangle tool one thing I wanted to note is that if you want it to be a complete and perfect square if you hold down the control button on your keyboard and push it down and hold it the entire time while you're dragging out your shape it's going to make a complete and perfect square that will give you a square that is the same measurements on all four sides but controls the shape and then once you have your shape you can go back up to the arrow the select and transform objects and then holding down control you can adjust the size of your square if you click on it and you see the little arrows surrounding your square you can adjust then in all directions as well so those are some settings that you're going to want to play around with and experiment with and see what they do but you can create all types of rectangles and squares with this box right here on the left right below it is create 3d boxes now if you're designing graphics that you want to print on paper or cardstock or maybe you want to make a meme or a thumbnail or a graphic you're going to post on Facebook something like that then I could see where this would be helpful I never really use this and I could not tell you a lot about it because it's just something that I don't ever use but you might find it useful and helpful so you can experiment with this box right below the squares and rectangles so let's go ahead and delete these boxes and delete to delete a box you just click on it and hit delete on your keyboard America the very next icon down is to create circles ellipses and arts so let's select that again if you just right click on your mouse and drag your mouse it's going to create ovals or circles when you unclick your mouse you're going to notice a three little marks on your circle you can select that and alter your the shape of your circle just by clicking and dragging you can do half circles you can do pie shapes all kinds of fun stuff again I think you know really you're just gonna have to open up Inkscape and play around with it but that's your circle tool and then also if you go down the control button and drag your mouse is going to form a perfect circle that is not oval-shaped whatsoever it's a complete Perfect Circle that's fine holding down control on your keyboard so that is the circle and eclipse tool let's go ahead and clear these out if you want to so delete several objects at one time you can hold down the shift button and select several objects and then delete them all at once I feel like this might be an overload of information and I really feel like the more you play around with the software the more you're going to learn all of the functions but if this is too much to the replay and take some notes and then you can sit down with the software right below circles we have create stars and polygons so once you click on that you're going to notice right above your work surface you have some settings that you can play with and you have the polygon and you have this star let's click on the star and draw ourselves a little star just like this so there's our star within our star we can change the amount of corners and points that it has right here we can add points to it just like this which is really fun we can also adjust just like this the inside points and create all kinds of fun shapes that way too well that's too much you can also around your points and yeah again that is something that you're going to want to come in in draw yourself a star and play with all of the settings and see what it does you can create so many different shapes from a circle a rectangle and a star let's go over here to the polygons because this is going to be something that if you like English paper piecing and you like doing hexagons little hexie quilts you could cut these out and cardstock if you have a cutting machine like that we've changed our star to a polygon so let's change this polygon to a hexagon just by adding one more corner we've gone from five corners five little points we've added one and there's our hexagon from here we can make it as small or as big as we would like one thing you'll notice about the size is it all works in pixels but you can change that right here to inches and now you can see that this hexagon is 3.3 inches wide and two point eight five eight inches tall and when we resize it the measurements change right in this area here so that is our stars and polygons or hexagons what we like to do and those are the basic shapes that we're going to work with today okay you just make sure we're still going and I'm not talking to myself yep we're still alive okay all right so what are some of the things that we can do with these shapes on the screen you'll see that I have some hexagons in a circle and a square in a rectangle and a star and some of them are just outlines and some of them are filled with color let's say you want to create a quilt label and you want to you know create stars going around your quilt label and you want them to be blue we're going to draw out our star let's just work with the one we've already created make it bigger so that you can see what we're doing if you double-click on the star whoops I clicked too many times you'll see that the little arrows turn to a curvy arrows you can rotate your star that way you can rotate all of your shapes just by double-clicking on your shape and I always click too many times there we go all right so here is our shape and when you draw out a shape this is ready to print let's say you're using Inkscape you don't have a cutting machine but you want to create applique templates and you're ready to go you would pull back your document properties open up your print page and you could put this onto your print page and print out your star let's say you want to add some color to your star so we're gonna go over the fill and Stroke options or your shapes okay right in this top bar here and yours might be on the right side of your screen you're gonna see edit objects fill color and gradients we're going to click on that box it's right here and a new box opens up I'm hoping you can see that and that my little picture is not covering it up within the fill and Stroke options are three little tabs the first one which is on top is your fill box you can fill with a solid color you can pick from any of the colors down here and those colors go all the way just by sliding the bar at the very bottom you'll also notice within the fill tab that you have an opacity adjuster you can make it so that your shape it goes from being opaque to being able to see through it okay so you can adjust the transparency of your color as well let's bring that back up to full color or the purpose of the video a second tab and the fill inch stroke option is the stroke tab once you select that you can alter your star by removing the stroke or you can turn it back on by hitting the flat color and that brings your stroke back and then you can also make that opaque or translucent as well your third option your third tab right here in the fill inch stroke is your stroke style this is where you can adjust the width of your stroke you can make it wider you can make it thinner there it is very very thin that you can also change it from a solid line to a dotted line that's really small let's let's do that one there we go a dotted line so that might be helpful for those of you who want to create your own patterns and some of your applique is supposed to layer over top you might want to add a dotted line to indicate that and let's bring back our solid line so again those are some settings that you'll want to experiment and play around with and that's where you'll find the fill and the stroke and the stroke settings I'm really fun things if you're going to print your graphics out on fabric or cardstock is that within the fill you have gradients and so you can play around with that you can change it from a solid field to a gradient you can also fill it with patterns and we're not going to go over that today because that's a little bit more intermediate leaning towards advanced but these are some different settings that you can play with gradients solid fills translucent opaque these that this option is where you'll find all of the ways to adjust the color in your shapes so that is if you wanted to create a shape and a printed on fabric or print it as a template okay you could bring this to your printing your printing page and print this all day long and it's going to stay crisp and clear and you can resize it as big as you want and it's going to stay perfect let's go back up to this top this first topic and go over stroke to path okay because many of you have cutting machines when you first a draw out your shape and you intend to send this to a cutting machine you're going to need to go one additional step before you save your file and you're going to need to transform your shape into a path that your cutting machine is going to read okay let's bring this up closer so that you can see exactly when I'm going to reference with your shape selected let's go right here underneath the arrow edit pass by nodes and you're going to notice I don't know what that little note is there we go you're going to notice get rid of that I don't know where he came from oh that was the gradient okay you're going to notice at your star once you draw it you only have two little dots and I'm going to zoom up close so that you can see them one is right here and one is right here that's perfectly fine if you're only one thing to print this out but if you want to cut this out with a machine you need to add some nodes and the nodes act like a road map that tell your blade and your cutting machine where to go it's going to tell all the little pit stops along the road trip to do that we're going to go up to this very top bar right at the top of our screen if you hit path and open up that box you're going to notice a whole bunch of different options come up right now we are only working with the very top one object to path and what this does is draw a straight line from point to point on your star that adds your notes your little road trip for your cutting blade now you'll see that at each one of the little points on your star is a little box and that's what we call a node that's the pit stops on your road trip for your cutting machine okay it's just been always an easy way for me to remember what that does within your nodes now that you've added them you can play around with them and change them if you want to that's something that you can play around with on your own and play with the shapes that goes into a little bit more of an advanced tutorial that we're going to cover on another day but here are our nodes and this is now what we call an SVG all of your cutting machines that operate with SVG files will cut out this star okay so we've not only created templates that we can print we have now also created templates that can be cut out with our silhouettes our crickets our brother scan and cuts and that's how we do that so let's go ahead and close this box and give ourself a little bit more room the next thing I want to talk about is the align and distribute and I feel like this is just a mind dump and an overload of information so please fill visit free to revisit re-watch take some notes and then sit down at your computer and play around okay one of the reasons I wanted to show you align and distribute in the very beginning because it is so helpful so let's go ahead and select this little green hexagon I'm going to duplicate that and we're going to work with multiple hexagons with it selected I'm going to come to this little toolbar right here duplicate selected objects I clicked on that and now I have two hexyz I'm going to move it down here and I'm going to duplicate it again and there's also a shortcut on your keyboard control D duplicates as well and so I'm going to create a whole bunch of them like that but let's just say we've been creating objects and they're scattered all over the place there we go let's bring that up closer so you can see what align and distribute does is you can line them up perfectly in a straight line horizontally or vertically you can also equally distribute all of your shapes so that there's the same amount of distance between all of them so let's go ahead and open up the align and distribute menu right here and this also might be on the right side of your screen as well align and distribute objects that tool box will open up and you can see let's make that a little bit bigger so that maybe nope not going to let me pull that all the way over you can see a couple of different options the very first one is a line and then you have distribute you have rearranged which I never mess with you feel free to experiment with that and remove overlaps which I never mess with you can experiment with that if you want within the align section there's a little white box with a drop-down menu and this is going to give your software some instructions you can choose last selected so right now we have last selected on I'm going to click on it's the last selected item when I hit center and a line it's going to Center all of my hexagons to the very last one that I selected now you can change that you can have them all align Center to your page if you want and there's a few other different options that you can play around with as well right now we have last selected so it's going to align to this last hexagon that we just selected right here we have Center on horizontal axis so we're going to select that it lines them up perfectly straight you can also which this is going to look a little funny you can Center on vertical axis that's going to line them all up but let's just do that you it'll line them up going up and down let's put them back spread them out there we go now let's say you have your little shapes and you have them selected let's go ahead and align them all in a straight whoops select them all and line them up now let's say you want to distribute them equally so there's equal amounts of space in between each one of your shapes you can come down to distribute and there's a few different options that you can play around with but the one that I'm used most frequently is make the gaps between the objects equal so we'll click on that and now you can see that they're equally spaced and there's equal amounts of space between each one of our hexagons so those are just some settings that you can play around with but yes I find that really helpful and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to share that tool and those options with you because if you're playing around and you're trying to line up a whole bunch of shapes exactly perfect with one another it can take forever the align and distribute does that for you very quick and perfectly the next thing we're going to talk about today is the Union and so we're going to recreate a snowman together and with this snowman feel free to have this tutorial open in another box and Inkscape and you can toggle between the two you can create a snowman with me and then you can print it out on fabric or send it to your cutting machine but this is using the basic shapes that we just talked about okay the circles and actually it's all circles there's no squares or rectangle rectangles or hexagons it's all circles but it's basic it's something you can do along with me with the union option what I'm talking about is if you see right here how we have the basic shape of the snowman that was created let me create let me make some space here give me just a second and if you've just joined us or joined us halfway through and you have questions just know that I cannot see them while I have this window open so I'm not intentionally ignoring you and if you want to hang around for just a few more minutes we can chat and if you're watching this on the replay or you have to leave before we're done then you can leave your questions in the comment section below this video once it's posted so this shape here was created by using the union feature and Inkscape very very helpful I would say that you can create any type of file any type of design with a square a circle a rectangle a triangle a star and a hexagon okay so those are your basic drawing tools right there let's go ahead and start creating this little snowman and I'll show you the union feature uh he's going to be purple because that's the last color that we selected let's go ahead and close that let's just make this let's take away the fill okay we showed that a little bit earlier and now it's just a circle shape no fill so let's say this is the head of the snowman if we duplicate that and you can do that right here or a bike hitting ctrl D that duplicates your circle and creates another one we can drag that down and make that bigger I'm going to hold the ctrl button down on my keyboard grab one of these corner arrows and just increase the size holding the ctrl button down at the same time it keeps that a perfect circle so now we have the body of the Snowman now you can manually adjust that wherever you like let's say he is king or ice skating for this video this tutorial he's just going to be standing still so let's move on down here if you want to make it perfect you can open up the align and distribute the tools that we just talked about a second ago you can select both of your circles and Center them horizontally but now they're perfectly centered with one another that's one of the reasons I wanted to show you that as part of a beginner tutorial so at this point we have two separate circles okay and if you want it to print it this way you could you could do that if you wanted to cut this out your cutting machine is not going to read anything we need to assign some nodes to these circles but before we even do that let's go ahead and join them and make a one solid piece or our snowman let's click and select a both circles at the same time I do that by holding down the shift button we're going to go back up into this top menu called path and open that up this time we're going to drop right down to this option that says Union we're going to click on that and just like that we've gone from two separate overlapping circles one a complete shape of our snowman up body at this point let's go ahead and assign some nodes to this so let's go back up to path object to path and just like that we have our cutting nodes so there is an SVG you can also do this and still print this out as an applique template or print this on fabric as well and you can still adjust the colors if you wanted to but we have all of our nodes are assigned next we can just create some circles for the eyes again I'm holding down the control button so there are perfect circles have that selected I'm going to duplicate that and make a second eye just like that I'm going to push on select and select them both and we can move them both at the same time so there's his two eyes I'm going to go ahead and turn that into a cutting file or add our nodes object to path now we can create his nose and I'm going to do that with the basic circle shape as well this time I'm not going to hold down the control button I'm just going to draw a little bit of an oblong shape like that you'll notice you have three little points on your shape you can add whoops go back go back what you want to do at this point to really fine-tune your carrot nose go up to path object a path that's going to add your nodes and at this point you can alter them it's like this you do have little handles that you can experiment with we're not going to go over that so much in this video but just like this we can alter the shape of our nose you can play around with that until you get a shape that you're happy with and then you can adjust the size of it if you would like so there is I don't know why it did that of course give me a say oh there we go okay I clicked on the wrong sitting earlier here is our circle shape give me a second and so much talking in the morning here's our circle shape let's go ahead and add some notes to this as well and now we can pull this top one down and create a mouth for our snowman if that outline is too thick for you you can go into the villain stroke which we covered in the beginning of this tutorial go over to stroke style and make that thinner if you would like to and once it's selected you can move that over and put it right into place now for the buttons that go down the front of the Snowman I'm just going to come up here and copy one of his eyes just duplicate that and duplicate it again and again and again and again now because we created nodes all along the way this is a cutting file you could send this straight to your cutting machine and cut out all the pieces for your snowman let's show you how to save that and before we move on how to save it as a print file for those of you who want to save it as an applique template or to print it out on fabric we have our cut file let's go ahead and select all of our objects because I don't want to confuse this system I'm going to right click on my mouse I'm going to copy everything that selected my entire snowman I'm going to go into a new document I'm going to paste it so here's our snowman and a new document and now we can save this as an SVG onto our desktop to do that we're going to hit file we're going to go to save as a new box opens up and at the bottom of the box right down here it is shaded blue if you click on that you get all of the fall extensions that you can save your design as I like to save mine as a plain SVG and we can name this snow man SBG you can say that in your folder you know where you're going to save that I'm saving mine directly on the desktop so now we have an SVG that I could put straight over to my brother's skin and cut you can use whatever cutting machine that you want to use let's say you don't have a cutting machine and you want to create a traceable template to cut out applique width and you want to trace and use some heat and bond light or any other kind of fusible product or let's say that you want to print this little snowman on a quilt label or some fabric and make a mug rug let's go ahead and color in our snowman and give him some color going to select first on his body and it doesn't really matter where you start I have his body selected each one of these objects is a different object that you can select I'm going to start with his body first and let's go and choose a color for our snowman let's make him up blue now we can select the eyes and let's go ahead and make those white we can select his nose and let's make that orange we can let's just make his mouth black like it's made out of coal right and then let's select all of the buttons all at one time and we will make those red so here's our snowman he is ready to be printed on fabric or on cardstock whatever however you want to use this as a printed image you can also let's duplicate everything before we get too far ahead of ourselves I've selected everything I've duplicated it I want to create an applique template with no fill so let's go ahead and go to fill and Stroke which we covered earlier while everything is selected I can unfill everything just like that okay or my applique templates let's scoot over some I like to separate my pieces so you can bring over the face just like this and you can bring over the buttons by selecting them all and sliding those over and so now you have separated all of the elements for an applique pattern imagine all the things that you could do now right but let me show you how we could go about printing this either on fabric or printing out an applique template let's get rid of all of this because we've gone over all of that in the very beginning of this tutorial we hid the printing a page let's bring that back we're going to go back up to file we're going to open document properties and [Music] I am printing on eight and a half by eleven well I didn't mean to do that eight and a half by eleven so I'm going to click paper size us letter eight-and-a-half by eleven and I'm going down here to display and I'm going to unhide that box so there is our printing page you can select all of your items and move them this way I like to group mine so that I don't accidentally move one of the selected move one of the pieces around to group them you can hit control G that groups all of your objects together and now it's one complete piece well first let me show you this so let's say you want to print this on fabric I like to save mine as a PDF but let's say you're going to print out this snowman and you can go up to file save as that menu opens up we can call this snow man print on a fabric and then under save as type I like printing from PDFs so I'm going to save that as a PDF and that is saved another menu pops up I do not change any of these settings I just hit okay and now that filed the blue-colored and snowman is saved as a PDF on my desktop you can also save this and export it as a BMP we're going to cover that in another tutorial whoopsies somehow i ungrouped him now let's say we want to print out all of the pieces for our applique as an applique template we do the exact same thing you can move all of your pieces let's say you want to put his face up here his buttons down here and his body here you could add text and put the word face underneath the face pieces you could type 'button underneath of the buttons and give a little bit of instructions and the word body underneath the main portion of the Snowman you could write tracing instructions you could whatever kind of instructions you could use the text tool and add text to your page and again we're going to save this as a PDF and today's video we're gonna call this snowman applique template we're going to change the type to PDF we're going to hit save and we're going to hit okay and now we have created a three files together with basic circle shapes let's go take a look at what that looks like and a closed-down Inkscape now on our desktop here we have our first snowman that we're going to print on fabric I use Adobe Reader to open and view my PDFs so here is our colored and snowman you can see look how clean all of the lines are now we can print this on cardstock we can print this on fabric you can create quilt labels you can design your own fabric and print it out using Inkscape with colors the appliquéd template file and now here is our PDF that you can share with your friends and you can all create little snowman mug rugs quilt blocks all kinds of stuff with a tracing template for your applique if you've ever considered making patterns as a quilt designer then this might be something that's helpful for you now let's go ahead let's go to the Internet I'm going to show you the cutting file let's go to my brother canvas work see I can't forget I have a dentist appointment this morning or at 12 o'clock so with your cutting file you'd open up the software whichever software you use for your cutting machine I happen to have a brother scan and cut and I use the canvas workspace and so we're just going to open up a working document for that and we can comment to this menu right here open up an SVG we're going to choose the file and we have saved it on the desktop as the snowman SBG will head open and here is our SVG let's bring you in a little bit closer so you can see that and I usually save my SVG's separated sometimes grouped together like this but within the software you can select these and separate them so that you're not cutting holes in your snowman from his nose and eyes and mouth and buttons his whole background will be one solid piece and then it will cut out each one of these other pieces individually so just like that we have an SPG cutting file to cut out paper fabric all kinds of fun stuff now I know that that was a lot of information and that's the beauty of YouTube is that you can always revisit you can take notes you can ask questions better than I can okay and so please do not feel limited to only my tutorials there's so many helpful creators out there who make really great content very helpful content and this is how I learned how to use Inkscape a long long long time ago was by watching tutorials and just really hands-on experimenting what the software and I do think that it's going to require lots of experimenting and actually working with it to be able to navigate easily through the software it's just like if you buy a new sewing machine and you look at all of the different stitches you look at all of the different settings and you don't know where to start you have to play around with the Machine and learn how to use it and this is no different yeah it's just going to take some time and practice and experimenting so if you have some questions I have let's see just a few minutes before I have to go get ready for my dentist appointment and if I happen to miss your question please feel free to ask it down in the comment section below again I feel like I've just dumped all this information on you and I'm just gonna walk away but I'm always here to help if you need the help so ask in the comments section you know the terminology is a little bit different I feel like each software has its own terms and its own you know tools and functions and they might be called the same thing or something slightly different but yeah once you learn the operation of the software you're you know pretty much you can navigate through it Cheryl I'm so glad I was able to break that down for you again it was a lot of information feel free to revisit that let me change my screen I'm still on that sharing screen let's see a full-screen YouTube screen there we go let's do that because I feel like that screen is screwed crazy screen the version of Inkscape Tracy that I have that works best for my computer and there are several to choose from the one that works best for me and then when I'm using is 0.91 a couple of months ago I did upgrade to the newest version and it bogged down my system I had to uninstall it and go back to 0.91 and my operating system goes freely and doesn't hang up or bog it down so 0.91 is the one that I am using you lot of information in there so feel free to take notes when you watch the replay and revisit this tutorial at any time this tutorial is easy to find there's a playlist for my Inkscape tutorials it's going to bring you where they're all grouped together you can save the playlist and walk through each one of the tutorials as many times as you need to okay I am off to get ready for the dentists and then I'll be working on a quilt this afternoon and then I'll see everybody this evening at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time if I've missed any of your questions I'm deeply sorry I don't see a lot any questions that I can answer alive so if I missed it I'm really really sorry I'm not ignoring you and I love you Jennifer my very first software that I started with was Inkscape before I go just a short history of my experience with Inkscape like 12 years ago I was doing some airbrush work for my uncle who was repainting a harley-davidson motorcycle and he wanted to get a vinyl cutter so that we could make stencils to create a decal so that I could airbrush that on to a tank of a motorcycle so he said if I buy this vinyl cutter will you learn how to use it and I said sure so he bought in a great big Roland vinyl cutter we had no experience with it and I had to learn from scratch lots of research later I came across Inkscape on the internet I downloaded it 12 years ago I didn't know that there was a lot of tutorials and actually there weren't a lot of tutorials on Eastgate back then but I found a few and I just spent hours working with the software learning what it does and I created a stencil that helped me airbrush some graphics on a motorcycle and then we did restoration on a very very old bicycle and I recreated the original graphics that went on the bicycle and so I just dived in like the most one of the most difficult things you can do that's how I learned and that's usually how I approach most things as I just usually pick the most difficult thing you can do and I start there that's what I do but I'm hoping that with these tutorials we can start more basic and learn from the very beginning and move up from there because starting with something so difficult like that is just so overwhelming but we're gonna start at the basics with these tutorials and progress our way to things that are more difficult okay I hope this was helpful I can't wait to see you all tonight questions leave them in the comment section I would really love it if you gave this video a thumbs up if you found any of this information helpful if you thumbs up my video thank you and if you haven't already subscribed and you want to see more make sure to hit the subscribe button if you click the bell notification and hit all you'll be notified when I make live videos like this one here and until we see you next time have fun experimenting with all of the things that we covered today hi everybody
