hello everybody hello welcome to Thursday today is July the 2nd first I just want to say happy 4th of July everyone and this weekend happy 4th of July I hope you have some really fun and relaxing plans for this weekend today we're gonna be doing something a little bit different here on my channel I do lots of quilting videos quilting tutorials t-shirts and t-shirt quilts and stuff like that mug rugs all kinds of stuff every once in a while I like to throw in a journaling video as one of my other passions is journaling making journals keeping track of stuff kind of like scrapbooking only a little different in a handmade book right there's so many different ways that you can do that today is an informal tutorial we're gonna be making a fabric covered journal you see that recovered journal this is the one that I made as my example I wanted a little bit of a larger one so the other day I sat down and made this one and I took lots of notes that I'm gonna share with you today on how you can make one today we're making the cover so we're making what you see here on the outside next week we're gonna put the pages in so it's gonna be like a - at least a two-part series just an informal tutorial you could call it a tutorial but really I just want to spend some time with my crafting family so this is this is what we're doing today we're gonna be using fabric for this one so most of us have some extra fabric if not you could raid your closet right if you have an old vest that you used to wear back in the 80s and for some reason you're still holding on to it you could cut it apart for this you could cut a part of a pair of blue jeans all kinds of different things ways to gather some fabrics to make a journal if you want to and I'll be giving you all the measurements and all of that stuff in the tutorial and if you're watching this on a replay so glad you're here we are doing this live so that I could spend some time with everyone if you're able to make it here lockdown that it will be something to consider right Teresa you've made a junk journal before it was fun oh it's so great to see everybody I just want to make sure that I'm getting everything all the stuff that I wanted to say before we jump in I wanted to make sure I got everything said one of the great things about watching live is you do have the option to come back on the replay right in case you missed anything yes we're gonna be making a book similar to this I have some different fabrics and different laces for the journal we're making today but it's gonna be like this it's got a curved spine I'm gonna show you more here in just a second joy you finally caught me alive yay Oh Kathy yes you could make a first year memory book yes absolutely so we just recently got a camper we had a pop up we moved up to an RV and we plan on taking a lot more trips right in the next couple of years I wanted to make you know I have a travel notebook that when we go on trips I put it in my bag and I can keep mementos and stuff like that in write but I wanted one that I could leave in the RV that documents all of our trips if it's just for overnight if it's just for the weekend if it's for a week-long trip if we decide to drive across the United States I want to document all of that and so that's how I'm gonna use mine but I've made cookbooks just like this I've made scrapbooks just like this a memory first year memory book that's an awesome way to keep all of your memories and use it like a scrapbook except you're making the scrapbook the body yourself right I love that hello miss gonna go ahead and switch the screen we're gonna jump in if you have questions directly for me if you could put them in all caps that would be really helpful for me to scroll through and see the questions and then yeah tonight I'll come back and read all of the live chat because I I love to see what you write even if it's conversations with each other all right let me switch the screen over I'm gonna show you my mat here we're gonna take a good look at this journal before we get started this is a fabric covered it's got a curved east and see that curve isn't that awesome isn't that awesome and I wanted to show you a different Journal just so you can see the difference in the two this one was made it's a denim covered journal just like this journal they're both made with manila manila envelopes just like this I'll show you that here in just a second but this one has more of a straight spine see that it's very little curved to that spine and this one is curved like that so this is what we're doing today this one has elastics that hold in all of the pages in this one all of the pages were sewn in so if you want to sew in your pages down below in the description box there is links to my journals playlist and in there you'll find the cookbook journal and that's this one it's a denim covered journal the little denim pocket isn't that cute and I show you through the whole series how to make this journal with the pages sewn in so you don't have to do the elastics like I'm doing today you could sew in your pages tons of different ways to make their journals right so tutorials are on my page or on my channel for that but this one has more of a straight spine and this one is curved it's not a hardcover it's really flexible and that these are all the pages we're gonna go over how to add the pages next week so make sure you stay tuned to Thursday at 12:00 noon Eastern Standard Time do you have any journals in your Etsy shop for sale I think I have three I think there's three left they're quilted travel notebooks there's a link for my Etsy shop down below but those are quilted travel notebooks they have the elastic system like this one so you could take stuff in and take it out but they're quilted they're like little baby mini quilts as your cover instead of something like this so next week we'll go over how to add all the pages and I'll give you the dimensions if you're making this size but all of this is customizable it looks like I'm buffering no there we go y'all give me just a second that's the that's the downside of doing a live is that my internet is not the greatest in the world and every once in a while we do buffering there we go I think I'm moving now so here is the inside of the journal and it has a little elastic closure with a button on the front and that's what keeps everything inside of our journal so this is what we're making okay like I was just saying you don't have to use these measurements that I'm giving today you could absolutely customize this for whatever size book that you want to make okay now I'm just gonna put this to the side in case I need to bring it over we're gonna be starting with a file folder oh goodness Internet come on why I see my little red light on my computer keeps going in and out I'm really hoping that it smoothes out please internet please you've been good all day why you want to act up now alright so here is a file folder y'all you can get these at the dollar tree you can get these at the dollar tree there's all different size ones there and usually they're not closed on the sides like this one they're just open like a flap but yes you can get these at the dollar three so this is gonna be the base of our cover so if you want to grab a piece of paper I'm gonna put some measurements on the screen right here this is what I'm cutting my my file folder if you want to make a journal this size the size that I'm making in this tutorial I'm gonna bring over my paper cutter and the first thing we're gonna do is we're gonna make a couple of cuts okay I have all my measurements here I don't want to lose that so we want our book we want our book ten inches tall and then because we're also figuring in one and a half inch spine we're gonna cut it 14 inches long okay cariann if this one is ten inches tall and we're cutting it 14 inches long but by the time you fold this over let me give you a measurement of the finished journal let's see one two three four five six seven inches just like this and ten inches tall so on the screen now you'll see the measurements of the file folder and the cuts that you need to make so let's see we are going to first first let's cut a seven inches and some time here's my folded edge here's the opening we're gonna cut over from the bottom of our file folder we're gonna line that up on the seven inch mark just like that and we're gonna make our first cut so there's our first cut and then we want it to be ten inches tall just like this okay so we have two more cuts to make I'm going to cut the end because mine is closed on the ends and then we're gonna measure 10 inches we'll put that cut edge right on the 10 inch mark just like that so we have some scraps so there's our first cuts of the day just like that so this should be 14 inches you could use your straight edge ruler in your rotary cutter if you have a old blade in your rotary cutter you could put that in and cut your file folder that way 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 1 2 3 4 14 inches and then 10 inches this way that's how big you're gonna cut your file folder all right and then you're also gonna want a piece of scrap fabric this could be any fabric that you want I tend to like like a darker muslin for this this is gonna go on the inside of your journal cover and it's gonna help support your spine and you could cut it exactly 10 inches tall so that it doesn't hang off the edge of your book but I like mine to hang off the edges of my book just like this here's my example see that little frayed edge it just sticks over the edge at the top and the bottom I like that if you don't like that then absolutely cut it exactly 10 inches this is going to help support the spine of your book alright and it needs to be 2 inches 2 inches wide and that's just going to help support all of the weight inside the spine of the book you'll also need 2 pieces of cardstock to line the inside of your book just like this I've put the measurements for those on this screen and I in case you're taking notes I'm gonna in here in a minute I'm gonna take that down so you can see more of my space on the table but that's for this page or the inside of your book cover front and back alright you could use fabric for the inside too right you could line at the inside of your book with fabric if you want so those are the measurements on the screen and then I also put how much elastic if you want to use elastics to hold your pages in and that the type of elastic that I'm using I got from Joanne's it's the very thin fine black round elastic and this came from Joanne's you could use any color elastic that you want though right and it doesn't have to be exactly that alright so we have the cover of our journal cut the very next thing we're gonna do is we need to score this so that we can get the curved spine right down the middle of our book okay so let's open up our file folder the file folder already has the score where it was folded in half right and when you open it up it should come right at 7 inches let me get a pen I scored mine giving myself a one and a half inch spine okay so you can kind of see that marked right here so one and a half inches means we need to come over on our scoreboard here's an inch measuring from the very center of our folder there's an inch and then a quarter of an inch or on both sides there is our inch and a half and I'm marking it on my file folder so you can see it but it's also gonna be covered up so if that helps you then by all means go ahead and mark it but we counted over one two three quarters of an inch both ways from the center and that's where we're gonna start scoring the spine of our journal okay so I'm just gonna take a little scoring tool and then each one of the little slots just running that tool right through there I'm doing this before I cover the front with my fabric so what is everybody working on what are y'all working on right now I saw stitch pennies right before we started she said she was getting her first haircut first haircut since the quarantine I reckon that's exciting just going through and making that the scores and this is gonna help curve that spine at the edge of our book I grew go through there a couple of times just like this and y'all this tutorial is very informal but hopefully it inspires you to make a journal of your own I don't know if you can see that I'll try to hold it see on the other side how it's made those scores just like that that's gonna help the the spine of our book be curved and I think we're done with this macaroni salad and potato salad Alexis Alexis that sounds delicious now that we have this scored where can you buy a scoring board well most of your crafting stores have them places like Joanne's and Michaels and if a Seymour's or Hobby Lobby any of those stores a Seymour's just closed where we are but I don't know if they're open anywhere else but I've also put a link down in the description box that brings you over to my Amazon storefront and there's two tabs there there's one for my quilt my favorite quilting supplies and then there's a tab for my journaling supplies and I have linked I think there's a scoreboard there the one that I'm using today I think I have that there in case you can't find one local to you so now we can just start folding on the score I'm just going to burnish that first one really well and we'll fold it over [Music] and burnish that again this file folder has an extra little tab where it was kind of bonded at the ends I'm just going to tear that off I don't want that extra thickness there alright so now we have all the scores I'm just gonna start working those scores right into a curved spine and that just takes a little bit of manipulation it's a score board the same as a cutting mat now if the score board actually has little little grooves cut into it and I'll show you more here in just a second but it helps give you straight lines when if you make cards if you make journals there's all different reasons why you might want to make use a scoreboard maybe you have like a Cricut machine and there is a box template in your Cricut machine the scoreboard will help you make all of your folds nice and straight so there's all different uses for the scoreboard and I can work this more in a little while but see how that's starting to take on more of a u-shaped instead of a straight spine the scoreboard let me show you that in case you haven't seen it this one is an ek tools scoreboard it has these little grooves in it with measurements up at the top and along the side so you know exactly you can make your measurements and score where you need to and it comes with this handy dandy little bone folder and then this one also comes so that you can do envelopes you can make your own envelopes so that's kind of neat so there is my file folder it's so great to see everybody it's so great to see everybody all right so we have the base of our journal done we've done the scoring right down the spine of our book the next part comes in some fabric and y'all I have a whole bunch of different textiles to use you could use quilters cotton it doesn't have to be fabric like this you could cut apart your own clothes if you don't have any fabric and make it but that you could use a t-shirt right and make your journal cover with that so I have a whole different array of fabrics that I picked from my journaling a fabrics - and most of them are kind of velvety see that Sheen isn't that awesome I think this is the one I want to use but I picked these two because I was undecided see that Sheen with the velvet it's so soft and velvety but here's some tweed and these were like upholstery samples that my friend Everly gave me and so I've saved on to those the last couple of years you could use all kinds of stuff I really want to use this but I don't know so much that it's gonna go with my journal we'll have to see but this was a bag that belonged to my Nana and I've used it in several different projects now but I have a good chunk of it left I really want to use it but we'll see how it looks when we get there then I have this silky silky scarf this is a hundred percent silk so I kind of wanted to use this too cuz I like the silkiness of it but we'll see I know that I really really really want to use this so you need a piece of fabric that is a little bit bigger then the insert that we just cut or the cover that we just cut and I tend to usually go bigger and then trim exact versus trying to cut a fabric that's kind of stretchy trying to cut that exact and then glue it exactly in place where it needs to go along the edges for me it's a lot easier to go bigger glue it down and then trim it exactly where you need it to be so that's how I do it today I'm gonna be using fabric glue this is my favorite glue first stuff like this y'all it's permanent it dries really quick and yes I use it in all my journaling stuff but you could use you don't have to use this you could also use like Mod Podge you could use the aleene's tacky glue you don't have to have this one oh my glory Ella you have me on the big screen you really like the blue-jean Journal yes that one is awesome there's a whole big tutorial on that journal you can go and watch that come on internet I'm gonna give it a second you on my internet it's flashing red hopefully it's done now Oh y'all are back to making masks too huh making more masks yes alright so like I was saying you don't have to have this glue you could use any of the glues that you want this just happens to be my favorite so I'm going to turn this over and we're going to glue Alexis I think that was the standard size folder it wasn't really long I don't think it was a legal size file folder all right because I don't want any parts of the front of my journal to be Wiggly with the fabric I'm gonna try to cover as much real estate on this file folder with my glue you could put the glue on and move it around with a scrap piece of cardstock or your finger but I want to cover most of the real estate right up to the edge with my glue and because this glue does dry fast I'm gonna try to go really fast with this one right up to the edge because it's clear I know you probably can't see that as well maybe you can see the sheen shiny parts of it but I'm just going over even in the spine area just like this putting that glue down with this glue if you don't want to sow any parts of your journal cover you don't have to it's permanent but if you're like me and you like to use your sewing machine with your journal making you can sew through this glue you want it to be nice and dry though first before you bring it over and because this glue does dry fast the waiting time is a lot less make sure you cover the tip of that glue because it will dry up in the bottle it will dry up in the bottle I'm gonna take this off the screen so you can see more I'm just gonna flip the glue side right down onto the backside of the fabric just like that we're gonna just put that right in place Berta you've never made a journal oh I hope this inspires you today I hope this inspires you today and they make such great gifts y'all we at work when it we're in July now Christmas is gonna be right around the corner you could make a sewing journal for your sewing friends you could make memory books for those who are going to have babies you know we just quarantine time I bet you we're gonna start having some baby announced let's start popping up right you could make them a memory book to record all of the special moments in the baby's first year or two I'm just really rubbing at that file folder right onto the fabric and I'm gonna flip it over and make sure that there's no bubbles everything is nice and flat just like that oh this is so velvety I wish you could feel it so that's nice and flat there we go now we can go ahead and trim this right to the edges of our book a spray adhesive miss Pamela yes that would work as well spray adhesive would work too now I'm just gonna start trimming where's my little rotary cutter trimming the fabric right up to the edge you can if you want if you want a really finished edge you could fold that fabric down and glue it but I tend to like the raw edge on my journals so many different things you could do but you could fold that over and glue that down too I'm just going to trim it right to the edge of my file folder I save all of this I save all of my snippets I'll show you how those come in handy here in a little while just flipping this right around and trimming each one of the sides SF 101 are you talking about the interfacing you could use interfacing on the back of your fabric if you wanted to is that fusible on both sides I don't know so just like that y'all we have our journal covered in fabric look how pretty that curved spine is isn't that pretty now you could stop here you could stop just like this but I like to dress up mine a little bit more and in my example Journal right here I've added some lace trim in a section right to the spine so we're gonna go ahead and do that too we're gonna do that - let me see where's more over this fabric cuz I really like this doesn't that go so well with that I like that a lot so for the spine if you want to cover the outside spine you could make this as wide as you want this one let's measure this because I kind of really like that one a lot one two three four all right I cut this one at four inches wide and 10 inches long so let's just repeat that process see this was a little poultry sample so for the outside spine one more time we're going to cut that four inches wide and 10 inches long so there's my four inches wide keeping all the tidbits and now we're going to cut this 10 inches long line it up straight Lisa on your mat there we go five six seven eight nine ten there we go so let's bring this over I'm going to open it up to the pretty side of my journal cover I'm going to line this up on my mat so that I can see the center right here is the center of my journal we're gonna line it up so that it's the same amount of fabric on both the front and the back just like that once you've got it lined up I'm just gonna lift this up and add a little bit of glue right in here if you don't plan on doing any sewing you'll want to make sure this is really covered with glue right I am gonna bring this to the sewing machine here in just a little bit so I will be sewing mine down but you don't have to so make sure that's nice and straight once you have one side glued down then you can just add a little bit of glue in this section and get the other side glued down I just find it's easy to do one section at a time versus putting glue on the whole thing and then trying to line it all up whoo that's gonna be pretty so there is that part isn't that pretty if you're a touchy-feely kind of person like me I love using the different textiles that have all of the texture in them well that a good sale at Joanns yesterday I was at Joanns yesterday I got a backing for a quilt that I'm doing or I'm reek wilting for my aunt so if you've entered this section you could leave it with a raw edge just like this if you like the little frayed look which sometimes I really love sometimes I like my journals to be very neat and proper and then other times I like my journals to have fraying fabric and rough edges it looks like it's been used right it looks like it's travelled and been used and like it's very old so it's totally up to you you could bring in some lace trims and cut yourself off a piece like that how pretty would that be there's all different kinds of lace that you could use I'm going to show you some examples look at this one we found these when we went to Luray Virginia during our anniversary like two years ago and we visit all of the antique shops and so this lace is from one of those trips how pretty would that be oh I really like that so that's what I did on it this journal just to finish off the raw edge just a little bit you don't have to but that's an idea during that trip to larae I found this doily and I really want to use this on the spine of my book so that's what I'm gonna do so let me bring this over and make sure I get it nice and straight nice and lined up just like this yes we found this at one of the antique shops when we went to larae and I think for a travel book that'll go on trips with us that's perfect right I'm just gonna flip this up and add a little bit of glue here and there to keep it in place that'll be perfect once I started making journals every time I go to a thrift shop a yard sale an antique shop I have a whole nother range of things that I look for when I go that stuff like this I'm always looking for unique fabrics for art quilts and stuff like that but since I started making journals a few years ago I'm like oh that would be gorgeous on a journal in a journal just adding a little bit of glue here and there just to really tap that down we're gonna let that sit up for just a minute there we go now one thing is that you get glue all over your fingers when you're doing this that's okay it comes off but yes look at this look at this trim isn't that gorgeous there's a whole bag of it at one of the shops we went to so I used that one on this book here both the front in the back but you don't have to you don't have to and you could just glue it down fabric is permanent but if you want to sew it now it's the time to sew it before you add your pages on the inside so we're gonna let that dry for just a few minutes we're gonna flip it over to the inside of the journal and in comes the piece of scrap fabric that I mentioned a few minutes ago this is going to help support the inside of your spine right because this is just a file folder so we want to help support the spine of our book where it closes opens and closes that gets a lot of use we're just going to support that with a little bit of fabric this is roughly two inches let me straighten that up a little bit because I just took a scrap out of my scrap right out of my scrap basket two inches wide it's going to cover these spine and a little bit extra there we go Nikki yes if you have any spare time break out your fabrics and your doilies oh we're gonna glue that right over top of that spine I know it's hard to see because of the light but there are our score marks you can see those we're just going to cover them with this fabric we've scored a section that was one and a half inches wide so our fabric is gonna extend beyond that just what quarter of an inch on both sides so I'm just putting glue right in that area and I'm gonna lay that fabric right down and squish it right in place yes putting the fabric down isn't that so easy right it's so easy do you think you could use two pieces of craft foam like the small Journal absolutely yeah you don't have to use a file folder y'all I've repurposed books book covers like Reader's Digest books you know those Reader's Digest books you can find them at thrift shops really pretty easy they have like a marbled paper covers they're hardback books but they look marbled or really vintage I had one out just the other day I'll put it back I've used those to make journals with and so yeah you don't have to use a file folder you could use the craft foam absolutely ooh Laura I'm speaking your love language you have lots of lace yes all right so there's the fabric on the inside that's just gonna help support that spine for the years and years of use that it's gonna take using your journals now I like my fabric to still extend beyond the edge of my book just a little bit but you could trim that off flush if you want in case you're just joining me I'll show you what that looks like on my example journal let's see see this little frayed little bit right there that's how it's gonna look if you leave it a little bit longer like I like to do but if you don't like that trim it nice and even with the edge of your book and then I just take a little straight pin and I pick at this until it starts to fray right that's how I get that to fray at the edge oh yeah Wanda you've used composition books yes that's a great way to use a composition book make your own journal okay now what I would recommend if you want to do any sewing of your elements on the front of your journal cover I recommend doing it now at this point if you don't want your stitches to show on the inside of your book okay so I have in my machine I have an old sewing needle I can't even tell you what kind of needle it is because I've lost track but what I do is each time I replace my sewing needle for whatever project I'm doing I put all my old needles into a little container and those are the needles that I use in my journal making I don't use newer needles I saved those for my quilting projects and my sewing projects but when they've been retired from my sewing and quilting projects I put them in a container and those older needles are the ones I use and I tend to go for the larger ones like the what is it the fourteen eighty eighteen forty something like that the larger ones that I use those are the ones I tend to use when I'm sewing in journaling projects so hold on to the needles that are retired from your quilts if you want to make journals that you're sewing with because they're still really handy you can still use them they're perfect for projects like this and then I've put in some Brown aka ting company thread in the top and bobbin of my sewing machine and I'm going to go ahead and do some sewing of this lace make sure my sewing machine is all set up yes it is yes it is I'm going to just secure this lace down on the front but I don't necessarily want those stitches to show on the inside of my journal okay so that's what I'm gonna do first is I'm gonna go ahead and sew this lace down switch it over to the sewing machine you could use any of the decorative stitches that are in your sewing machine you could use a straight stitch or a zig-zag stitch for this I just really want to secure the lace edges around of this doily and make sure that it's not going anywhere okay so for that let's see I'm just gonna use a straight stitch for this part and I don't care that I'm using brown thread on a beige color doily I like my threads to show so the more the more elements to design and my journals I love it but you could match the thread so it just disappears if you want I'm just gonna do a straight stitch all the way around the edges of my doily it doesn't have to be precise and beautiful one all the way around I feel like I should be talking about something it's not really complicated sewing so I know many of you have already made journals how about the rest of you is this the first time you're seeing a journal tutorial coming back around the last side and then when we get back to where we started we'll just do some back stitches just to lock that in place I'm gonna go ahead and break thread and I am going to do a line of stitching right down the center just to make sure this the set of motifs in the center are really anchored in place too so there we go that's all the sewing that I'm gonna do at this point so let me switch this back over but we will be coming back to the sewing machine here in just a second so here's my doily all stitched down the little edges are still loose right what - kind of like that but I just stitched right on the inside all the way down just to really lock that in place so that I can use this for years and years and it's not gonna go anywhere so great to see y'all so great to see you so the stitching shows on the inside right and that's kind of messy looking so we want to cover that up and that's why I say if you're gonna do any stitching to the elements on the outside of your cover and you don't want them to show now it's the perfect time to do that cuz we're gonna cover that up we're gonna cover all of that up that's not the best stitching job I've ever done but it works right and it doesn't have to be perfect so that's where we are right this second yeah it kind of looks like a butterfly right okay I just want to make sure I don't miss any of my steps cuz I wrote everything down yes I'm glad I did alright so the next thing we're gonna do is we're gonna do the closure of our journal just like this one I used a button but you don't see on the inside of the cover where I've secured that and I kind of like that to be finished so let's go ahead and put in the button for the closure and where's my button I also look for antique buttons and trinkets when I'm at the thrift shop and antique stores for this one I'm gonna use this button isn't that pretty won't that be so pretty on there I'm gonna use my all and I'm gonna poke a hole so let me get a piece of cork because I don't like to poke holes and my good cutting mat for my quilting I brought over a piece of cork you could get this at the Dollar Tree too you can find sheets of cork there but you could also use open up an old book and use that underneath of your journal cover so that you're not poking holes into your cutting mat okay you need something there to protect that so now we're gonna figure out where we want the closure to be the little button and I know that I want it to be halfway down on the cover of our book that would be five inches right because our book is ten inches tall let me get a little piece of chalk one two three four five so right there's the center it's gonna make myself a little chalk mark I don't yeah you can see that good okay so now we have marked the center and we can just poke a hole right there right through the fabric right through the file folder I'm just poking a hole all the way through miss Laura there's so many different ways you could do a closure you could use lace just like this right if you don't want to use a button on the front of your journal like I'm gonna do with an elastic you just want to do some lace ties you could cut two longer pieces of lace and glue them right now just cut that and glue that right there and then do the same thing over here leave a little bit like this and glue it and make your lace about 12 inches long and then when you close your journal you'll have two long lace tails that you could tie oh that is so sweet when you do that so there's another idea if you don't want to use a button just making this hole a little bit bigger you can see I'm coming through to the other side this button has a little bit of a big little knobby hole on the back so I need to make that hole pretty good-sized like that I think that's pretty good then I'm going to take some Baker's twine I'm going to cut off a section and try to get that little knobby thing I need to make this a little oval instead of just round there we go I want the knobby part to stick through the back so I can put that twine through the hole you do not want your button right up to the edge of the edge of your book I need to snip this fabric a little bit because we're gonna stitch the edges of our book and you don't want the button to be in the place snip snip snip snip snip the fabric also gonna trim some of this away - here we go of course I picked a button that's really thick on the back side there we go so now it's poking through to the inside I'm just gonna try to get this Baker's twine right through there just like that I'm gonna go ahead and tie a knot like that actually not even not just one time like that I'm gonna put a little bit of glue here like this and like that to make sure that this button doesn't ever pull through and we're covering this with the inside lining as well so this will be all hidden but now it's the time to do this if this is the direction you want to go in like that [Music] glue everywhere snip the extras off and then I just like to cover that with some tape do you have tutorials on covering three-ring binders I do not although I did put a link down in the description box to a playlist where I've made several different journals and so maybe one of those videos will show some good ideas that you might be able to incorporate into a three-ring binder Journal but I do know that I've seen videos from other content crafts for those kinds of journals so they're out there I was gonna cover that with some tape so it is glued in place and it is taped in place now I can sort of poke that button right back through so that this is a little bit flatter so there's our button it's in place isn't that pretty so there is our button oh I'm so glad I'd use that button doesn't that pretty so that's where we are so far I just want to make sure I'm Stan I don't forget anything let's say glue down that lace trims on there front do the button I showed you the lace ties if you want to go that direction instead of a button now we're gonna go ahead and cut the inside papers again you could cover this with fabric wouldn't that be awesome you could lay some silky fabric right down on the inside and glue that down if you wanted to wouldn't that be pretty whoo that would be pretty do I want to do that decisions decisions think I'm gonna go with paper but that's just an option if you wanted to cover the inside with fabric you could do that let's pick out some pretty papers so I already know which ones I want to use that's why I'm gonna stick with the paper this is a paper pad I found at Tuesday mornings the last time I went which was like January wasn't in January y'all look at the price of this paper pad $6.99 they had it was the lost-and-found there was like six different ones so I got all six different ones let's see this paper right here this is kind of the color scheme inside my camper so I kind of really wanted to use that paper on the inside so we're gonna pull that paper out so let's find that there it is this paper is a little bit heavy it's not it says it's designer paper pad cardstock so yeah it is a little bit heavier than just regular pattern paper but it's not super super SuperDuper thick isn't that pretty and we're gonna cut the inside papers let me bring my cutter back over I'm gonna pull my measurements back on the screen because I have those measurements for you we're cutting two pieces of paper for the inside lining and we're gonna cut those at six by ten okay so this is 12 inch paper who we can get both of them from one piece yay so let's go ahead and cut this one at six inches [Music] and then we're gonna cut them going ten inches the other way why is that not even ten inches long let's turn that little smidgen off that's the only thing I don't like about this paper cutter I'm gonna tell you this paper cutter cuts cuts really good but the six inch mark I don't know why this paper cutter it's missing a like from five and a half to six inches I'm just gonna cut them so that they're both both the same there we go I save all these little tidbits of paper I have a great big stash of those is that an ice pick this is a wooden all I got this and jo-ann's yeah Joey ends I think we're gonna bring this back over now we can glue our inside papers down and cover up all of the stitching OOP that's alright I'll cover that up I don't want to waste this paper where do you get the paper cutter I got mine on Amazon Theresa on Amazon I have put a link to my Amazon storefront in the description box and so if you click on that link it pulls up my storefront and there's my quilting section in my journaling section I put a link to that paper cutter in the journaling section if you want to check it out it cuts layers and layers and layers of paper and cardstock and and it's self sharpens so I really like that I'm going to take some fabric glue and just cover the backside of my lining paper and then because I really want this to be glued down right to the edge there we go you're gonna flip that in place put that right to the edge of my book I shouldn't have trimmed it see that should've left it pooey that's alright we're gonna glue that down see how it hides up the stitching from the front and then we're gonna flip this over and do the same thing that's alright I'm going to show you what I'm gonna do to fix that little overlap section I'm gonna tell you once you have made a journal or two these go by really fast but when you're done it looks like it looks so complicated right it looks really complicated your friends will be like well you made this they make really really great gifts now I'm just gonna cover up the little twine that holds the button on the front and the rest of this stitching from the doily on the front there we go now because the buttons on the front it's not going to lay down exactly flat let me get that extra glue off and then we'll flatten it from the other side just like that yeah an icepick would work if you don't have an all I've used uh pencils to poke holes with before so just get creative in what you have you don't have to have all the tools you just have to be creative and use what you have right so there's the inside lining papers isn't that pretty doesn't that look old and vintage now I have a little gap right here and I don't want that gap to show even after I put all of my papers in my book that'll still show up so where's that lace that I had just a few minutes ago here it is you know what I'm gonna do whew that'll be pretty too I'm gonna cut two pieces of this yes that'll be pretty and we'll just disguise this little opening right here I shouldn't have trimmed it but I did so yeah if you mess up there's always ways to cover it up right Oh that'll be pretty once I get this glued down we're gonna let this sit for just a few minutes and chitchat with the glue to dry and this glide this clue dries really fast because the next thing we're gonna do is bring this to the sewing machine and we're gonna do a stitch all the way around the edge of our book cover because I've used fabric tech you don't technically need to do that but I like the extra stability that the stitch offers and I like the look of it so we're gonna stitch all the way around the edge of our book cover here in just a minute we're gonna let that set up and dry for just a few minutes so great to see everybody today so great to see you so in case you've just joined us let me show you the example journal that's actually on the thumbnail of this video this is the one that I made the other day it has the curved spine it has the elastics and so you can take the pages in and out next week I'm going to show you the measurements for your pages and how you can slide them right in the elastic see there's one of the elastics and these books slide in and out I'm making this journal for our camper one of the reasons why I love the elastic systems for my books versus sewing in the pages like I've done with this journal I love this too but that's more permanent right if we go traveling anywhere and we get little like inserts from our trip you can just put them right inside and they become pages of your journal right I love that I love that I could take a page out and write on it and then put it back into my journal so those are some of the reasons why I went with the elastic system for this book you don't have to you could sew your pages in just like I did with the cookbook journal isn't that so cute oh it's almost dry hello miss hazel hello oh it's so great to see everybody so great to see you now I will sit here and pick glue off my fingers for the rest of the day because this glue is permanent it does come off you could wash it off but it's a little bit harder to get off so I just sit and scratch it for the rest of the day that's the only downside that and it has a little tiny bit of a smell to it but if you're working in a little bit of a bigger room it's not that bad and once it's dry the smell goes away but yeah when it gets all over your fingers just sit here and scratch it off guess what it's dry just like that though I love that and okay so if you are into paper crafting and you've glued pages to Paige's paper to paper and it wrinkles you know how that happens sometimes because the glue is wet did it wrinkle your pages when you're doing paper crafting this glue does not wrinkle your pages so it dries nice and flat there's no bubbling that happens so I really love that about this glue it is Fabri tack you can find this it is at Joanns i saw it there yesterday I order mine on Amazon but you can buy it with a coupon at Joanns to Hobby Lobby Michaels all those places I have seen it at Walmart too all right now if you want to stitch the edges of your book you can use any of the decorative stitches in your machine I predominantly like to use like a zig zag stitch or an over locking stitch or even like a blanket stitch just to stitch down all the edges of my book hello I'm is Vicki hello it's so great to see you Dollar Tree does have the file folders you get like five for a dollar five file folders and they come in the standard size and I've also seen them legal size too at the Dollar Tree so I'm gonna go ahead and stitch this down there was one more thing I was gonna do let me make sure I'm checking my notes Oh ink the edges yes alright so this is also what I like to do because we've used file folder look at the very edge of that book you see the little white edge from the file folder before I sew it I usually like to bring dark colored stamp pad and just see that to that little edge I like to ink that up and just camouflage that and that's just me you don't have to do that but I kind of like it to blend in see how it covers that edge up I'll show you the difference one side to another so I like to go ahead and ink my edges and I do that at this stage because I've used velvety fabric that's gonna rock it's gonna fray all my edges but that's okay I like that it makes it super messy though and this is just a chestnut cup colored ink pad you could use any ink that you have it'll just help blend in the edges of your file folder see how it just blends that right in it is making a huge mess with my velvet though that's alright that's okay there we go alright now we're ready to sew this down I'm gonna pick a blanket stitch let's see a blanket stitch on my machine is a number six six I like it to be a wider blanket stitch so I'm gonna set it and let's see four yeah let's do that and the stitch length I'm going to set at a three that sounds pretty good of course all those settings might be different for you and your machine I'm go ahead and trim some of this off so it doesn't really go down inside my machine too much cuz that's a mess all right I'm gonna bring you back over to the sewing machine there we go it does make it really shabby right ooh a metal dog brush freeze the fabric can you please post your notes so we can print it out I'll tell you what I'll take a picture of it and put it on my Facebook page would that be helpful they're kind of messy they're kind of messy if you don't do Facebook I'll tell you what here in just a minute I'll hold them up to the screen and then you can come back on the replay and copy them that way I like to keep a lot of the tutorials free so if I start taking time to type everything out then yeah if you can pause the screen and take your own notes we can keep the videos for the most part free there are some paid patterns on my channel but if we can eliminate some of the time and keep them free that would be awesome all right I'm just gonna start right up here at the top edge bring my needle down and I'm just gonna sew all the way around the edge I'm gonna make that a little bit longer there we go this is one of the reasons why you don't want your button too close to the edge cause you're gonna have your presser foot if you want to sew around the edge you're gonna have your presser foot right coming right next to it so there's the first side bring it over we'll come down the other side still going still going but like I should have a story to talk about I don't have a story today I guess I could talk about this so we'll be coming live next Thursday to do the pages I'll show you how I do it we're gonna do that we're on the third side and this is the last side we have love to do all right we're done with the sewing machine we're done with the Sun machine so now I'm going to send the longer bits off I don't mind a little bit of shabby but not that much not that much there we go I am gonna take this little needle now that we've stitched this I'm gonna pluck this fabric so that that frees a little bit oh that's so shabby looking that's so pretty there we go and fray this one out just a little bit like that one thing's for sure is make sure you have a trash can nearby this is the inside lining so we covered up the stitches from the outside doily and the lace right so that's nice and finished and we covered up the twine from where we put the button on and this is the outside of our book just like that that pretty I love that I love it so one last thing I want to show you in today's tutorial and we're gonna add the little elastic on the back okay just to finish the closure of this journal we're gonna go ahead and add that where's the little marker here we go we put the button right at 5 inches so we're going to count up one two three four five and we're gonna mark the center right there can you cpad just a little tiny bit I'm gonna bring over my crop-a-dile this is a crop-a-dile - any way to poke a hole in here and set an eyelet you don't have to set the set an eyelet but an eyelet will help preserve your journal for years and years and years to come but you don't have to use one this pokes holes and it sets eyelets so I'm going to set it at the 1/8 I have some little tiny eyelets I'm gonna set right into my journal cover it will tates these little containers you don't know right side up or not I have these little tiny eyelets just like that see how small that is it's the 1/8 eyelets that's what I'm gonna use for my closure so I'm gonna go ahead and poke my hole right where I marked it right in the center make sure it went all the way through cuz we got that velvety fabric on the back as soon as we set this eyelet I will hold up my notes and then you can come back on the replay and cut and just put it on pause and write everything down with the fabric when we poke it through the other side it creates these little nuggets then I just like to trim nice and flat there we go now from the front side we'll put the little eyelet right in the hole just like that see how it creates a finished hole right through the cover and then we will set the eyelet and squish it down [Music] and just like their that it's it's in there see how finish that looks from the inside and then I'm just gonna take one of these scrap pieces of elastic that's why I don't throw away anything when you cut off some elastics and you have these little tidbits I save them because I use them in my journal making as closures now as far as far as how long that you want your piece of elastic to be for the closure you're really gonna have to eyeball it until you get your pages then you can always replace this with a shorter one or with a longer one like this one's almost a little bit too long because it's a little loose right but this is a it's just the beginning of this journal as you start adding stuff to this journal it's gonna get thicker and thicker right and so I wanted some room to grow in so I don't mind it being a little bit loose right now it still closes the journal really well if it's too tight then you have a hard time fitting more stuff in here right and then yeah you don't want to put too much stress on the edge of your book so I like it to be a little bit longer but you know it's just scrap elastic if it's not the right size or if you grow out of the size you make you can just replace it I'm just taking both ends like this holding those and we're gonna just tie a knot loop it and form a little knot just like that and because we put the eyelet in the journal cover this knot it's not going to pull or put any stress on our book cover ooh Kathy you're looking for a quilt show in Florida so there we go it's got a little knot both ends are tied into a knot and then I'm gonna take the loopy the closed section and just feed it right through from the inside just like that and that's gonna hold our journal closed so there we go nice and finished it blends right in there I love that button so there we go there's our journal cover isn't that gorgeous I wish you could feel it of course I have all these fuzzy bits I'm gonna have to clean up that's okay that's all right but it isn't that so pretty so here is the example one with some pages in it so next week right between now and next Thursday I'm gonna be coffee dyeing some paper outside because I love the vintage look of the coffee dye paper I might even use some tea to dye some papers if you've never seen that done and what it looks like and what you could do with that check out the description box because I've put a link to a video where I show you how I coffee dye lots and lots of pages all at one time and I like to do it outside so right now when it's hot and sunny it's a perfect time to do it I do it first thing in the morning by lunchtime they're all dry and nice and crinkly and aged looking ready to go in my journal but for this one I'm giving this one to my mom I did not coffee dye these papers so next week I'm gonna show you how to run the elastics through the journal cover okay and then I'm gonna give you the measurements for the pages that go inside this journal so you'll get all of that next week too but these pages have not been coffee died there nice and pretty and white and clean looking mine are gonna be grungy and old and antique looking it'll look like my journal has traveled and traveled and traveled but it'll be brand new so yep I used map papers I use time to travel I thought that was really neat but yeah with all the different kinds of paper pans out there you could really customize this someone earlier said they thought about making a journal for the baby's first year memories you could they have paper pads all for that you could do that so yeah and I'll show you some examples of other different papers that I like to use in my journals besides just patterned paper I'll show you some examples of that I'll show you how I do my little fabric tabs on the edges of the paper that's why I keep all my little snippets because look how pretty that is from the side of the journal to have all the different little textured tabs on your pages so we'll make some pockets we'll put the pages in the elastics in and yeah and we'll do one of these on my journal kind of optional right you don't have to do a book plate but I kind of like the look of it you could also add metal book corners to the edges if you wanted to - right if you have those so yes that's what we're doing next week but that did not take that long right to make the fabric cover plus we had some chitchat in there and we covered up a boo-boo I think that'll actually look really pretty once the pages are in and purposes I've coffee'd out a lot of papers but it was by accident save Barbara save them because they will become treasures in your journals you have no idea oh so pretty in a journal to have the coffee accidents in your journals she said okay yeah save them I want to thank all of my moderators for sticking through and just keeping an eye on the chat making sure that no funny business happens y'all are such a lifesaver I don't have to worry about no silly wonky stuff happening in the chat when I see y'all here so thank you so much for that oh I wanted to hold up my notes okay y'all if you can read my handwriting let's keep this tutorial free if I have to sit here and type all this stuff out and make sure it's organized and all that stuff and no typos then uh time is money right and I'd rather give it to you for free so pause the screen I wrote them in order okay let me pull up on the screen the measurements too so you can write that down there's the measurements and here's the order you want to pause the screen let me open it up just like this so you could see everything yeah no you can't anyway all right sorry I'm gonna hold that up you could pause the screen and then I'll move it down so you can see seven eight nine and ten seven eight nine and ten and this is the order that I did everything today so pause the screen take some notes and let's keep this tutorial a free one and then let's see yes here's 12 and 13 so you can pause the screen again and that's how we did the elastic on the back we have not done number 13 we're gonna do that next Thursday but you can write it down now we also did not make the inserts but there's the measurements for those if you want to get a head start so there's that that way we keep everything nice and free and you can take your own notes if you want to write this down this is where we scored our file folder here was the very center right here we went three quarters of an inch three quarters of an inch it should total all together an inch and a half and I scored every single line in between there to do a curved spine so you can write that down too and I know my hands are shaky so if you just pause the screen on the replay it'll stay nice and still Thank You Regina thank you I like to keep it down if I'm real I'm not professional for certain y'all there are so many professional quilter videos out there there's so many much more knowledgeable journal makers out there book makers y'all if y'all have ever seen know you don't have to make this exact journal you don't have to make it exactly the same size or do exactly the same steps feel free to alter it anyway but yeah I hope you've been inspired I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna tell you just the weight of this book and the feeling of it in your hands it feels scrumptious and maybe that's just me maybe I get excited over silly things but I'm gonna tell you I love the way that this book feels I love the curved flexible spine I really love that so I cannot wait to finish my journal we're going to the Eastern Shore not this coming weekend but we're going weekend after next and then at the end of July we're going to Indiana because my mom was approved for her surgery so she's gonna have surgery for essential tremors so we are doing a convoy to Indiana I might be doing a live from Indiana I don't know what we'll do but I think I am bringing my sewing machine with me and so stay tuned for those updates but yes I cannot wait to put my journal and bring my journal on those trips I can't wait to use it it's so pretty and I love that we found this lease on an anniversary trip two years ago because that's sentimental to me right Laura you just got some new paper I would love to see it are you on Facebook thank you Miss Vicky I always get excited when I see you Thank You dort how are you doing right Sheila it looks antique it looks old right it looks like an old form right I'm gonna make a page out of this it looks like an old form yeah there's two of each one of the pages and of course I love that looks like dictionary pages for old book pages that's pretty that looks old that looks like old tweed yes I wanted to see your journals - Laura thank you for their prayers for my mom we've been waiting for this phone call for a good while now so we were so relieved to know that she can have her surgery and get quality of life back right she has essential tremors and they're able to fix it on one side so she's picking her right hand because that's predominately dominant hand ooh that's pretty - and so she'll be able to do her cardmaking again and she's wanted to learn how to play piano so she's been waiting for this surgery so we are super excited for her Indiana that's where we'll be headed I like the polka dots yeah look at that see I'm all about the vintage looking stuff y'all I don't know why that's just maybe I have an older soul that just loves the vintage rulers in a quilter that is relatable so I really like that lined paper for journaling our trips I even love the darker pages because you can post photos you know of your trip or of your baby or your grandbaby your dog all kinds of stuff that's pretty - that's that's the colors I'm looking for see that's the inside lining pretty yeah I found this paper pad like back in January I think at Tuesday mornings I can't wait to go back there I haven't been there since January and we're almost to the end that's the same page we used it the lining that's pretty little green polka dots ooh I like that one too stripes and then some skin gum with some checks on the back and that's the last of it so that's a pretty cool paper pad that's the paper pad I'm using predominantly to fill my journal I can't wait Barbara somewhere in time oh my goodness that's one of my all-time like that's in my top 5 movies of all time somewhere in time Laura Tuesday mornings yes
