all right welcome everybody to another lesson here today and everyone's just joining i'll give everyone a minute to join the lesson and turn on their camera turn on their microphone and we are live on we're going to talk about what people do so it's a little easier than our previous topics and uh what does it mean if we ask someone what do you do right what does that mean it's usually about someone's job it's usually about their profession their work their job and so usually we ask this question right say what do you do what do you do usually this is about our job and if we ask this question to a student like a university student then this person might say i study right this is also like a job like what do you do um so let's quickly just talk about what we do for example me i am an english teacher what do i do i teach english right and so we can we should also remember if it's if we have one person then we need to add s at the end of the verb and if we have many people then we don't so for example teachers what do teachers do what do teachers do teachers teach but if we say a teacher what does a teacher do what does a teacher do a teacher teaches a teacher teaches right so teachers teach but a teacher teaches great nirvana what do you do [Music] hello confusing prayers in uh retreat retreat spiritual yes uh-huh so uh this is what you do full time yeah do you have and yes but i used to work at the restaurant yeah i used to work at the restaurant at the hotel when i used to live in portugal and here i used to work at the italian restaurant yeah but i thought you were a professional grandmother now yes in that case i work as a first i work as a mother right now i work as a grandmother good professional difficult profession yes difficult but pleasure more pleasure i think pleasant yeah my pleasant it's pleasant yeah um great thank you let's talk to marina marina what do you do hi chris i'm an economist on this station electricity station and and what does an economist and electricity station do well actually we have a lot of economists i i work in a investment department so it's it's like exactly i i do everything concerning investment i'm economist so we invest money uh in under power energetic or how to say equipment so we are restructuring modern this equipment do do everything for to how to say yes for making work for fixing for restructuring yeah something like that okay so you have to predict if it's a good investment or yes and uh yes i count this money how to invest this money much better [Music] to maintain this equipment in good good condition great it sounds like a very complicated job well actually yes we need to have a lot of experience and you have how many years of experience doing this i've been working in this department since 20 20 11 i guess 2011. wow so about 10 years yeah you're an expert almost yes great thank you marina let's talk to uh safa hi safa yes how are you nice to meet you how everyone and i am really happy to meet you well we're happy to meet you too so where are you where are you joining us from uh actually i am tunisian but i live in france so i live in paris and i am happy to have the opportunity today to attend your lesson because i work all the time monday and friday and uh today i have the opportunity to attend the lesson so i am very happy wow great well welcome and what do you do for work uh i am a pharmacist uh i uh yes i work in the pharmacovigilance fields so i work in uh medicinal product security so we are assessing uh medicinal products uh security we collect adverse events about medicinal products we manage all data in relation with medicines and after that we will uh make declaration to the regulatory authorities oh wow yes it sounds like a very big important job yes it's good but i am i want to to have more uh job opportunities so i want to really uh improve my english level because english is really important in our field so you speak arabic french and english yes i start speaking english yes yes wow well you're doing you're doing great i think thank you that's very interesting okay let's talk to colleen colleen what do you do chris well i work in oil industry i am a reservoir engineer reservoir engineer yes and part of my job is to evalua to make production for a cast and to evaluate the oil reserves that the company have has [Music] and this way your uh the company can estimate the profit uh it is going to have estimated profit okay that's interesting so so as an engine you're also working with the budget and we are a team and we work with biologists and um an economist and production engineer cool very interesting okay let's uh go to amira amira what do you do hi great how are you so what do you do great and what do you think are the difficult parts of being a housewife because i think when when you're a housewife or house husband many uh all of the people in your household they depend on you a lot right [Music] [Music] [Music] i um okay so it's a it's for you this this is about planning making plants and and organizing these plants [Music] interesting great and very not really not how about you what do you do hi chris hi everyone hi oh so i am an employer and also teacher employer and teacher employer of who and teacher of life uh you know we had our own store you know shop store uh-huh a little little stuff okay and i mean at school i'm working a teacher you know as a teacher at school as a teacher yes i'm trying to be a teacher i'm trying to be a teacher but right now you work as a teacher uh yeah yeah yeah it was just like joke i'm trying to be a teacher okay because i don't want to be a bad teacher i want to be a good good teacher like do you remember if f u t future do you remember this yes i remember this so you want to be this kind of teacher i want to be a very very very good teacher that's great i think it's important teaching is a good job um okay great thank you aisha what about you what do you do hi hi everyone uh actually i am a teacher uh i am a biology teacher biology i i teach in the university uh so a professor that i still um celebrate for the for phd to be a professor okay so at the university that you work at all professors must have a phd yeah because you must don't stay in the same level and after maybe four to sixth year you have to join your foreground for phd okay yeah and in some places you can be a professor and not have a phd you can have a master's degree and also be a professor yes but you know if you uh you keep your master only you have a lot of work and less salary and some of uh people which have uh phd they begin higher than uh higher level than you and that's good for some people yeah yeah i understand great great thank you ayesha um so yeah so let's talk a little bit more about about jobs when we when we ask what do you do this is of course for you if we speak about another person what does he do what does she do we can also ask this question about an object this is a marker what does it do what does it do what does a marker do a marker a marker writes markers right markers right a marker writes that's what it does that's what they do markers they one marker it great so this is very simple but let's talk about some some mistakes that people usually make with these simple things in these simple rules and some other rules that we have like when we want to talk about what we do we can say uh we can say i work as a teacher can we say i work like a teacher no it means something different it's different i work as a teacher this means i am a teacher and i do the work of a teacher if i say i work like a teacher it means i'm not a teacher and my work is similar to a teacher to a teacher's work i work like a teacher right like for example what does a consultant do a consultant works like a teacher a consultant teaches people they consult people sometimes right or a trainer trainer works like a teacher so uh right this is something similar but it's not a teacher and this is this is important too because um in some languages and in some places when you study at a university and you finish your education then you say i am a doctor for example someone studies for four years uh pre-med before medicine before becoming a doctor right they study the first part of becoming a doctor it's their first year of university and and someone says oh what do you do they should say i'm a student i'm studying to be a doctor right but but sometimes these people answer they say i'm a doctor but it's their first year of university they're not a doctor right or uh or another example somebody studies at university for four years to be an engineer after these four years this person cannot find a job as an engineer a job as an engineer but uh but this person finds a job as a teacher and someone asks what do you do it's not correct to say i'm an engineer he doesn't have a job as an engineer he has a job as a teacher he's a teacher right he studied to be an engineer or he studied as an engineer or he studied so we could say something else about this but we don't say that he is an engineer if he doesn't have a job as an engineer if he doesn't work as an engineer so education and and profession are different right um great a person who a person who paints pictures what do we call this person anybody can turn on their microphone and answer the person who paints pictures is else artist okay cool we have some different answers a drawer an artist a painter okay interesting so what's the difference so he um he is interested in that business and he gained money but painter or a drawer maybe it's a hobby so he is not working as an um an artist okay what about picasso pablo picasso picasso i think it's an artist because he he sells his um painting he gained money with that okay he gains money with that he's not just a painter he's a painter and also he is an artist because you can be an artist and you can be a bender but if you can't if you can be if you are a painter sometimes you can't be an artist okay okay so so usually what we how we think of it is artist is very very very general yes like many many things can be art and a person who makes this art is an artist right so for example people who who dance there's a choreographer who organizes this dance right and so choreography is like an art and this choreographer is a type of artist and the dancers might be like artists right uh art artists can be a very big term like a musician a singer these are artists also they have a different type of art their art is music right so uh so yeah so painter is specific about one type of artist a person who paints like picasso right we so usually when we read something about picasso it says the famous painter picasso yes he's also an artist and and yes he's also a famous artist but if we speak specifically about his art form then we can say that he's a painter right drawer this is an interesting word we don't we don't say it a lot a person who draws but yes there they could be a drawer uh we might also use words like sketch and when we don't have a good person word a good word about the person who does this thing then we can always add the word artist so a person who sketches um to to sketch is like to draw something basic to draw the first version of something right uh so a sketch artist might create this then you also have comedy sketches a sketch in a comedy right and this is also a sketch artist and but they're also a comedian right so sometimes it's difficult to understand how to create the word of the person who does this thing like for example we have comedian but comedy comedy and comedian the the stress the stress and the word changes right another good example of this is politics political and politician politics political politician it changes in each of these words right politics is this general idea this general topic right someone can study this at the university what did you study i studied politics i studied history i studied geology geography politics right it's a subject political is an adjective about politics and politician is the man or person man or woman who engages in politics who does politics right great okay who are some other important people we have for example a person who designs is a designer how many different kinds of designers can you think of designer of clothes designer landscape designer okay computer grab how to say graphic computer graphic designer we could have a web designer interior and exterior designs interior exterior designer toys designer or a video game designer what cake designer cake designer yes yes nail designer architecture so um so a person who designs architecture has a special name right usually they're an architect an architect yeah so cars and transportation cars and transportations what about cars and transportation designer okay yeah so we can have designers of many meetings and so the designers kind of like artists we can use it about lots of things an academic program for for teaching program designer right i mean you can say it about lots of things what about musicians a person who plays music is a musician musician and a person who plays the violin violin violinist a composer writes music yeah but he is a musician uh is he usually he's also a musician right yeah uh okay great what about what about someone who plays the piano [Music] how to drum trumpeter yeah uh the drummer a drummer yeah who plays on the drums or we might call them a percussionist percussion it's this group of instruments like drums there are many different instruments like many different types of drums uh things that you hit and they make sounds this is percussion instruments so sometimes a drummer is also a percussionist yeah what else um the twist is corrected the person plays floats is floatiest they are uh they can be a flutist and some people also say floutest they're both correct great okay what about uh any other so so we talked about uh instruments i think we understand what about just when we have a verb sometimes we use a verb and we change it to be about a person and you can see that sometimes we say ist sometimes we say er and sometimes we have other endings but usually usually it ends with o-r and e-r usually right so this is the actor or the doer of something we can take any verb really and add this ending and even if it's not correct people will understand us because everyone knows that it when you add this at the end of the verb then it means it's the person who does this so uh like flutist or flautis is correct for a person who plays the flute this instrument but if i say he's a good fluter it's not correct it sounds funny but everyone will still understand what i want to say right um so if you don't know you can always add this ending and the person will hopefully hopefully they will understand right so we can take any verb like um like if we say jump a person who jumps a jumper right uh swim a person who swims swimmer person who runs runner person who walks walker so this is a very easy way for us to create new nouns about people what about [Music] what about sports players football player football player okay and also in british english they often say footballer in american english we don't in american english we say football player or soccer player defensor striker midfielder yeah defender striker midfielder goalkeeper yeah so all these are positions in football right different positions that someone might play [Music] who plays basketball basketballer basketballer or basketball player what about a person who plays tennis tennis player tennis player yeah so we can always sorry and exist tennis no no okay what about hockey hockey player hockey player hockey player yeah also a wrestler wrestler yeah wrestling wrestling good example uh sometimes we do have these like to pl when someone's playing golf golf golf player yes golfer swimmer swim swimmer right yes great great great okay um what about a person who does science science scientist yeah scientist all right great i think you get the idea here there's a lot of different uh words that we might use to talk about what a person does and when we talk about uh what a person does sometimes we talk about their career right so let's talk a little bit about i'm just going to turn off mics for now uh let's talk a little bit about the career ladder the career ladder the steps of the career right so a person first starts working and they are you know they're in employee or you might say worker right and then we also have well we have manager or maybe we have a supervisor right and then we might have more managers and more managers and um and then we also could have for example a department head someone could be self-employed right right this is in uh this is in a situation where a person is employed has a job through someone else yeah uh so all of these different levels they tell us what the person does right the names of these positions it tells us what the person does the manager must have something or some people to manage the supervisor what does a supervisor do this was our question from the beginning of our lesson right our simple question gigi what does a supervisor do supervise something awesome a supervisor what supervisor devices job or employees so yeah yeah the department or supervisors yeah uh-huh great what does a manager do colleen a manager he manages manages something some people yes right um what about do you have something like this in your job yes yes the do you have man the carrier letter it's exactly how you write uh-huh how i how i have written it here yes uh-huh and what department are you in um it's a production department so creating the product okay great excellent so sometimes um we also have other interesting positions in in work situations and they might have special names for these special positions um so how do you tell people what it is that you do right there's a lot of different ways that we can answer this question what do you do we might tell them about might tell them about our hobbies and activities we might tell them about our position at work we might tell them about we might tell them about a project that we are doing now right we might tell them about our studies we might tell them about our lifestyle we might tell them about our responsibilities and how do we know how do we know which of these things the person wants to know right because every time it's what do you do what do you do what do you do it's the same question so usually if it's not clear the person will will say for and then tell you one of these topics right like if i want to know about your job and maybe it's not clear i can say what do you do for work what do you do for work but my maybe somebody tells me about their job wow it sounds so stressful what do you do for fun what do you do for fun after work uh yeah abdo good exactly what do you do for a living what do you do for a living this means what is your work what do you do to get money so you can live so you can pay for things in your life what do you do for a living mm-hmm like how do you make money basically um we could ask what do you do at work right like someone was someone told me oh i do this job and i said okay so what do you do in this job right so i asking for more information about that thing yeah uh gg um i can i can ask what job do you do sure but remember that job is not only about a professional job sometimes is at home like it's my job to wash the dishes because sometimes when i ask what do you do and and think about job that the person can answer like i am i'm watching tv like that uh something like that that doesn't connect with my question and then but it's possible if i ask what job do you do it's um in general people connect money you know or something yeah like a professional job usually um you could also say what do you do all day [Laughter] like a person says like uh oh one time this happened to me i was interviewing a student and it was uh she was a teenage girl and she said i said what does your father do she says he's a boss and i said uh boss of what she's like boss of the other people in the company and i'm and i say uh but what does the company do sells things okay so uh so yeah sometimes you have to ask this question and ask for more and more information abdo uh you have a question too right yes uh is it accurate to say uh what's your profession when we ask about jobs we can but again profession is like a high level job right this person this person is something like an expert they know more than the average person so a person who makes hamburgers at mcdonald's probably this is not a profession yes yes we are talking about maybe high levels of work right agents doctors professors something like that yes accountants bankers things like yeah thanks yeah great great question uh yeah so we could also say um like what are you doing at work right now what are you doing at work at the moment right so this might ask about this period of work and the project that they're doing now or the work that they have now i might my brother is um studying physics and i might ask what are you doing in your in your classes what are you doing in your in your courses at the university right and this means what are you studying what are you learning about right or lifestyle we could say like what do you do at the weekend you could say what do you do when you go on vacation like usually you go on vacation and what do you usually do what do you do on vacation chris you said you said what do you do for your profession it's correct you can you can say this but but you can also just what do you do for work or what do you do oh for work uh-huh okay yeah great any other questions for today yes teacher um sorry we are we are talking maybe about uh slang so sometimes um when i watch movies they say how how do you gain money these days so someone talked to his friend and he says how do you gain money these days so is it the same meaning for what you do uh gain money gain or get get probably yeah this just means yeah like how do you make a living yes so how do you get money these days yeah these days is the same as for example nowadays it's it's comparing to the past like we have 10 years ago people nobody drove an electric car nowadays many people have electric cars for example but these days uh you could also say these days many people have electric cars you might also say these days when you meet your friend when you see your friend after a long period of time you didn't see him you ask him like what's new what has changed what are you doing these days yeah or or maybe um maybe our maybe i always meet my friend at a specific restaurant the rest of my our favorite restaurant and now this restaurant is closed and i asked him where do you meet your friends these days so it's like now right cool nirvana has a question is there some difference between presents and gifts huh great question presents for gifts which one should we say so uh there's no difference there's no difference that they're both nouns they're both things they are different when we use them as a verb right gifts and presents they are the same but to present and to give are not the same so for your birthday i will give you i will give you a present and for your birthday i will give you a gift give a present give a gift i will not present you a gift i will not present you a present um i will present you this marker right now this marker was designed in taiwan and shipped across the globe until it came to my door it's black it has black ink and it's very cheap there i've presented this marker to you i'm not going to give it to you i've but i've presented it do you like it so this is the difference right to present something like a presentation and to give a gift to give a present yeah please and when i introduce someone i can say i i present someone as well it's the same okay let me
