hey gang it's paul with sled tech welcome back to our channel in some of our previous videos you've seen jordan i install a lot of crown molding on a lot of kitchen cabinets the method we use gang pretty popular we simply put a notch in the face frame we take our pre-assembled crown molding we set it into place a few nails and we're done it makes for a perfect seamless installation but there are a few downsides about that method number one you got to put a notch in your face frame you got to get up there with a chisel or a buzz saw if you're brave enough and if you screw it up you're gonna be really upset with yourself and probably somebody else in your life's gonna be mad at you too the second downside is for all your binocular bobs the outside corner of your miter does not line up with the outside corner of the face frame that can bug some people i get that and the third downside is it's not very beginner friendly so is there a way to install crown molding on top of kitchen cabinets where you don't need to notch it where you can line up your miter and add a couple of more details along the way we know there's a way to do it we're going to show you right now stay tuned you're going to love it all righty gang as you can see we're back at our mother-in-law cottage and we are ready for countertops now check out these counters at the bottom they were already here guys in an effort to save them a little bit of money a lot of money we were able to match them at one of the local home centers with these brand new uppers they came out great but they are screaming for some crown molding at the top now if i come up here and we try to put crown molding right here with our traditional notch method you can see if i put a notch right here we are right at the top of the door because the overlay on the doors is so great it's almost covering the whole face frame and what if you had european style cabinets you don't even have a face frame so how do you put crown on top of cabinets like that well use a nailer we've all seen it done before take a separate piece of wood and put it right there now obviously you can't really get a nail gun in here and attach that so you just open a door and you put a screw from the inside so we're on the right track so you've got your nailer on top of your cabinets you've got your crown pre-assembled you get your buddy to help you put it up here he's over there you're over here and you're both trying to get the same reveal and without that little notch to register the crown against you're going to battle it you against your buddy getting that reveal perfect so the way we're going to solve that issue is we're going to take the nader down we're still going to use it it's a great idea we're going to bring it down at a comfortable working height put it on our work surface attach the crown to it build the whole assembly slide it up there as one unit with a few screws from inside the cabinet into the nailer it's going to hold it there forever and now that we have all of our crown attached to our nailers the front and the side pieces as well we can call that a modular system can't we we can take that whole assembly put it on top get our wheels perfect open a couple of doors run some screws into the nailers from inside the cabinets and we are done the beauty of that is it's modular like i said if we ever have to get up there say we wanted to put some led up lighting on top of the camera yeah or put glass doors here with some down lighting or look over here we've got these funky pipes up there heaven forbid one of those ever breaks now the plumber can easily get to them by us just taking down our crown molding and be very easy so the first thing we got to do is figure out our reveal well what's the reveal well that's the distance your nailer is going to be hanging out past your face frame now right now i have a zero reveal it is flush with the face frame on this side of the cabinet so we can go flush or we can bring it out anywhere we want to you can go that far if you want but that would look goofy i think what we want is 3 16 from the edge of this face frame to the edge of the nailer so when we come around the side and do the same 3 16 here the miter on our crown is going to line up here now yes we have a little bit more of a reveal on the side because of this gap but that's going to be fine so our first step is to measure the width of the face frame and we're going to add 3 8 to the overall dimension why 3 8 because we have 3 16 of an overhang on each side three sixteenths plus three sixteenths three eighths let's grab the tape measure measure this face frame head out to the saw start cutting all right so now we need to measure for our side pieces these are 12 inch deep cabinets that should be 12 inches to there exactly and it is so we're going to add 3 16 that the measurement for our reveal so the long point of this miter is going to be 12 and 3 16 from a 90 degree cut at that end let's head back out to the saw [Music] all right gang we've got our pieces cut and now we're going to glue them together we're going to use our new favorite method with 2p10 adhesive but we're also going to incorporate some wood glue to get the best of both worlds check it out [Music] and there we go we got the best of both worlds we got the strength of the 2p10 adhesive acting as a clamp holding everything together while that wood glue dries and we're going to get the strength of the 2p10 with the strength of the wood glue it's not going anywhere all right we've got our nailer glued together now it's time to cut some crown and the beauty of this is that the measurements for the crown are the same as the measurements for the nailer check it out we've got 12 and 3 16 from this 90 degree cut to the long point of this side piece now we're going to have 12 and 3 16 from the 90 degree cut to the short point of the miter on the crown this is 54 and a half here on the long points it's going to be 54 and a half to the short points on the ground and of course this side is just a mirror image of that side i've got our measurements let's head out to the miter saw cut that crown alrighty guys we're outside at the saw ready to cut some crown now i didn't bring my crown stops today what's a crown stop you've seen us use them a lot it allows you to cut the crown in position like this since i don't have them we're going to cut it on the flat and a lot of you would argue that that's easier and i'd have to agree a lot of the times it is easier especially with the larger crown so when cutting on the flat like this we have a different miter and a different bevel setting than we do when we're cutting like this what are those two angles what is my miter and what is my bevel well that depends on the spring angle of the crown what is the angle between the wall and the crown this crown that's 38 degrees the other common one is 45 degrees like that and since we know our spring angle is 38 degrees we can go right to our saw it already has the detent built in for that on the miter 31.62 right there on the bevel it's that mark right there that large indicator where our red pointer is set up at 30 what is it 3.9 33.9 now if you had a 45 degree spring angle your miter would be 35.3 degrees and your bevel is an easy 30 degrees on that scale in the back right here now if you had a crown with a different spring angle or you had a wall angle in other words your crown was meeting the wall at a different angle other than 90. you can still figure out your miter and your bevel on a website called blocklayer.com it's an incredible resource you simply enter the spring angle the wall angle punch calculate and it'll give you your miter and your bevel for any spring angle crown and any wall intersection it completely removes the stress or the fear of cutting wrong wasting material yep all of that and wasting material is huge so now that we're set up for this cut i've got it marked to length let's chop this miter and finish this crown [Music] all right guys we got our pieces cut now it's time to glue them together now i needed a 90 degree reference right here to get a perfect miter so i just took my cross cut sled for my table saw i turned it upside down and that's going to work perfect we're going to glue it just like that it's going to be fine let me get my 2p10 ready we're going to glue up this miter [Music] all right gang we got our crown cut and assembled our nailer cut and assembled now it's time to put them together we need to pick this up a little bit to get our 3 16 inch reveal right there and to make our life a whole lot easier i'm simply going to head out to the table saw and cut some 3 16 shims let's head outside cut those shims [Music] there we go perfect 3 16 reveal let's do the other side then we'll do the front [Music] all right game got it all nailed off our reveal is perfect and check it out on the top side to see what it looks like now we have a pretty small crown but if you had a taller crown and you wanted to make it stronger here get a piece of wood like that cut it at the right angle you can put it in right there fasten it to your nailer now you have something to either nail the crown into here or glue it right here and you get really tall crown you can do it that way and make it really strong but since our crown isn't that tall we're just going to put a bead of 2p10 right there hit it with some activator and this thing is ready to install on that cabinet [Music] alrighty gang that came out slick now all we have to do throw it up here on top of the cabinet center it get our reveals on the sides the same put our screws in it a little sanding on the corners filling some nail holes i think it's ready for paint it's going to look epic i say we screw this thing in let's do it [Music] sweet saw it pull down it's nice and tight all right [Music] [Music] nice all right i love that yeah let's take a step back and look at this sucker all right cool man i love that method that is sweet that does look really sick that extra detail you get from the nailer right you would never know that that's a nailer one more little step in the in the profile yeah let's check this miter let's see how that looks yeah they're a little fuzzy because it's mdf but wow little sanding a little paint that's gonna be great yeah of course i mean look at that miter lining up with that face frame right there love it that's awesome i'm so glad i thought of that let's do this one all right [Music] so [Music] oh i love that method dude yeah man we got to wrap this up we're running out of daylight out there we are like usual i think that's my new number one really yeah you prefer this over the notch method yeah the chisels can stay in the case i don't have to risk damaging the face frame not that you ever have not that i ever have you know what i like best what's that that i can build the whole thing on the ground and put up with some screws and if we have to paint that we are going to paint it just remove a few screws bring it down here paint it put it back up it's going to look great don't have to paint it in the air right that's always good you don't have to be near your cabinets or anything like that yeah and remember guys this is some cheap mdf that's primed from the home center so a little paint on those miters primed yeah whatever that stuff is i mean dad i'm really liking how this face frame corner goes straight up into that miter yeah i mean that looks really slick we haven't seen that on a lot of our projects right and that's the first thing i'm going to look for in people's kitchen from now on really yep going to be that guy i'm going to be that guy hey man we are loving that gang it came off without a hitch so that tells us that is beginner friendly a beginner can do that absolutely and a pro can do that and you're going to get basically the same results and we didn't have any hiccups really if you can cut crown i mean that's the hardest part of this whole thing right it's cutting crown molding but it's super easy to build that nailer like we talked about attach the crown to it put the whole thing up there as one unit put those screws in it and you're done so jordan i 100 recommend this method and you know what else we recommend we recommend you smash that like button for us build a nailer for it so you can remove it then you can smash it again and look gang if you have any questions ask them down below give us your own tips and tricks subscribe if you haven't already that would mean the world to us and we'll see you on our next video [Music] you
