I never use the rubber washers that go on the top side of a sink drain. Put them on the bottom. Use silicon on top. The rubber washer often raises the strainer just a tad (depending upon the sink design) and prevents all the water from completely draining out of a sink.

Better to use a brass tail piece on a kitchen sink. People put lots of stuff under their sinks and bump the tubular pipes. The tailpiece can be the first to fail at the upper connection. All brass is better but it costs a lot more. Leaks ruin cabinet bottoms and so much stuff under sinks it can take time before people know they have a leak.

hey gang welcome back to our channel joe and i are back here at our mother-in-law cottage for what we hope is the last date yesterday was supposed to be our last day we wanted to hook up the kitchen faucet the disposal all the drains hook up the dishwasher and the supply line to the ice maker but as soon as i opened the faucet i knew it wasn't gonna happen check that out i got half inch straight pipe threads on the factory supply connectors on this faucet and i can't change them because this end is proprietary i mean it's made to match up right here so i've got to use these now let's go under the sink and i'll show you the angle stop and why we can't use those and why it's a problem now these angle stops are existing we usually change them we always change them but we can't change them here because the water shut off of this property is about a quarter mile away buried at the street nobody knows where it is so we have to adapt this hose to that fitting and the instructions are zero help they don't even tell you what size this is now i know it's half inch pipe thread because i can tell i can see it i've worked with pipe my whole life just like that is half inch pipe thread the difference is this is tapered pipe thread that is straight pipe thread i can see that it's straight and i know that it's straight because there's a rubber washer in there tapered pipe fittings don't need a rubber washer but straight ones do now that tapered fitting will engage and i can tell it's hitting the washer it's starting to compress that washer so that's going to be fine and this is something you already have in your house tapered pipe thread to straight pipe thread where is it in every shower in america your shower head has straight pipe threads on the fitting with a rubber washer that seals against tapered pipe threads in the shower arm now granted that is not always under pressure and this is going to be so we have to do it right let's walk over to the table i'm going to show you a couple of options all right i've got two options made up for you this is the first one that i came up with yesterday i ran down to the local ace hardware and they had this fitting half inch male pipe thread by 3 8 compression i scoot it onto the end of the hose in this case the hot water line from our faucet i bought a short piece of 3 8 inch copper tubing put it in right here now on the other end i'm all set to go onto the angle stop i got my compression nut and my ferrule or as you plumbers over in the uk call that an olive how about that i read your comments now over here is option number two i thought of this this morning this is probably well it is a lot more diy friendly because you don't have to cut any copper tubing i've got a half inch pipe nipple there i always use brass when i'm working with something like this like domestic water and then i bought a half female pipe thread right here on the label half inch female iron pipe by three ace compression connector we've all seen these in the home centers in the hardware stores and in each of these cases i'm ready to put these on the angle stop i've got 3 8 compression on each end i just got there by a little different route which one do you think we ought to use jordan well the copper method is really nice because you can customize the length of the piece that way if you wanted to cut a little two inch piece slide it in that would allow you to have a shorter amount of line underneath your sink yeah your angle stop would be like where my thumb is right just a little piece of copper and you're good to go right and since it's so rigid you might just be able to like plug it in you know kind of plug and play action with this one you're not able to trim this so you're going to have more line all of this is going to be down below your sink however it is i think a little bit faster because you're not having to remount the pipe and all of that right well let's say we go with this one let's take all this apart and get our faucet ready to install all right all right guys the whole time we've been showing you this faucet we had these two hoses attached but they don't come attached from the factory when you open the box they're going to be coiled up and you're going to have to hook them up now there's a tiny picture in the instructions that say that the shorter one of these is the cold water they've got the cold water line hooked to the shorter one and the hot water line indicated by the red of course to the longer one i've already got this one tight and you got this little bitty hex right here in order to tighten it with so a crescent wrench is not going to fit in there so i've got an 11 millimeter opening wrench and if you don't have a set of metric wrenches a 7 16 will work just fine so i'm going to put that in there so you get that double o-ring seal i'm going to twist until it bottoms out and i really can't twist it by hand anymore then i'm going to put my wrench on it right i'm there got my 11 millimeter wrench and i'm probably going to give it let's see that's a half a turn maybe one more yeah you don't need to go crazy yeah i think i'm there so we're almost ready to put it in that hole that our countertop guys drilled for us but we realized this fitting is in the way it'll go in the hole but the bottom nut that clamps everything together we're going to show you that hits this and i'm glad we checked it because we found out this is only finger tight anyway so i'm going to remove that fitting that's where your hose hooks up right there but i'm going to remove it we're going to install the faucet and then put it back underneath the sink once this is all tight and where we want it so let me get this off of here we'll head under the sink now the instructions say to use one of these washers at the top between the counter and the faucet and one underneath but they only give you one so the bottom of the faucet already has a rubber washer on it so i'm going to use this one downstairs underneath the sink so the first thing we got to do is thread this washer onto all these pipes slide it all the way up so our next step we're going to feed all these hoses through here i'm going to save the black one for last put the hot through that's cold buddy okay now we're gonna go with the hot there we go now put this one through last run it all the way up this could be the hardest part of the whole thing what's giving you shovel i can't get it started i'm cross threading it i can tell do you want me to go hold the sink it might help hold the faucet yep my glasses are fogging up try that was the ticket yeah thanks that's what i needed bud so now i'm going to grab this fitting and put it back on the faucet body there she goes there we go and the black hose will just click on there you should be able to hear it click there you go you heard that yeah but don't you need to put the weight on there first no this one has screws in it man i can put it on any time i want oh even after oh okay well you got the drill for me yeah you're awesome i actually like these screws better that other type with a little latch just never seems to hold look at that even got some teeth on that's where the whole budget for the product went probably in that design what's that good yep on the hot side we gotta feed the faucet of course and the dishwasher with hot water and from the cold side we've got to feed the faucet and the ice maker on the refrigerator so i'm going to do that with what's called and add a tea that's the little box that comes in says right there add a tea and i got two different sizes they may come in different configurations but this is what i need this nut here is going to screw on right to my angle stop and now it gives me two outlets a 3 8 compression for the faucet and 3 8 for the hot water on the dishwasher standard in the u.s on the 3 8 for the dishwasher and on the cold side i'm going to put it right there oops sorry and i've got 3 8 compression for the cold water and quarter inch compression fitting for the ice maker standard in the u.s we're going to show you that later when we hook up those two appliances so let's put those on there now this is a machined brass surface and so is that so i don't need any pipe dope it's the same as the ferrule remember we showed you the ferrule it's a machine surface no pipe dope required so i'm just going to screw that on there and i've got the outlet pointed towards the dishwasher put that one on there now we're going to tighten that up i'm just using a crescent wrench or a 5 8 inch opening wrench works great too there we go one more good all right that should be good now that the two attitudes are installed our next step is to finish the plumbing side i'm just going to screw that half inch brass nipple under there and we'll tighten that up with two wrenches [Music] all right that's all done now we just have to hook these to our attitudes i'm just going to route all that tubing up above i got plenty of room up there screw on the hot and the cold i like to put a pair of channel locks right here to keep that tubing and the washer from spinning as i tighten that nut the last little go all right let me do the hot side [Music] all right faucets hooked up now obviously we can't turn these on yet right till we get these hoses connected but that's pretty sweet man that is got those hoses ran perfectly up and behind the sink so not only is it hidden but it's not in the way of your plugs here or this right yep perfect all right why don't we grab the garbage disposal and we're gonna hang it on this side start running some drains all right guys here's the disposal it's a waste king we've done a lot of disposal installations on this channel almost always and then sinker raider we can handle this one first thing we're going to do take this part off right here just like that and then all the fittings are stuffed inside there's your stopper your 90 plate and a strainer so we got to put this on the sink so it's all got to come apart because this nut goes underneath and the basket goes on top so we got to get this off how do we do that lift it up a little bit remove that rubber washer noting the orientation of it goes like that not like that we're gonna leave it like that right on our towel this will come off now we can take this nut off we're ready to go and this fiber washer goes on the bottom like that and the rubber washer goes above like that i almost always use plumber's putty right here but this is a plastic fitting and some plastic fittings don't react well with plumber's putty so we're just going to use the rubber washer that came in the kit see how it works all right let's clean that out a little bit i'm going to drop that in place remember i've got the rubber washer right there now i'm gonna get underneath while jordan holds this in place and put on our fiber washer and this big capture nut [Music] okay all right i've got that as tight as i can i'm pretty strong got two hands on there it's tight but if you don't have a lot of strength in your hands you can buy a special wrench that engages this nut and helps you tighten it you can find those at the home centers we'll try to put a link down below for that guy all right next step hang that garbage disposal all right we're gonna put this back on just like that put the seal back on there's a little groove in it just like that gang and now we're going to hang the disposal nice thing about these waste kings they already have a cord on them yeah i love that one less step we got to do one less thing that people could do wrong yes all right i can't see it can you help me out a little more yeah there nice i felt it give now i can rotate this so i locked it in so that tab see that tab right there is right here at the stop it's all the way but it still gives me some movement so i can align my drain but i'm going to call that good right now i think before we forget let's knock out that dishwasher plug in here we'll get it out of there probably should have done that ahead of time but you got small hands you can go grab it right [Music] got it look at that that's much different than the incinerator design it's just like a little plug in it yup cool all righty gang i picked up this kit from lowe's it's a garbage disposal installation kit by kenny and it's for a double sink it's exactly what we have let's unbag it lay out all the parts start running this drain all right this kit really comes with everything five slip joint nuts five washers the clamps for your dishwasher hose and all these parts that came with the disposal we're gonna leave it up there but before we can start putting this in let's put in this basket strainer i also picked up one of those from the home center it's by kenny also and this one has the three screws on it instead of that big nut so why don't we try this one see how it works here's our basket strainer took it all apart first thing we're going to do further instructions is get some plumber's putty make a rope out of it apply it here and embed it in the sink all right got our plumbers putty ready to go seen some plumbers just go around the edge like that break it off but i like to make a rope it's like playing with play-doh like when you were a kid huh if it gets too thin double it up on itself and the beauty about plumbers putty you don't have to wait for it to set up a lot of guys are going to comment they use silicone right here but then you got to wait for it to dry and the silicone squeezes out to me makes a big mess so i prefer plumber's putty once this is set and done we can start running water we don't wait for anything to dry that's all ready same thing as before i'm going to set it in there push a little bit jordan's going to hold it for me and i'm going to go underneath and reassemble this thing in this order rubber washer first then the fiber washer then this ring in that direction and then this collar and these thumb screws are going to engage in that channel in that collar and check it out they even give you a little slot there to tighten them with a screwdriver nice all right let's get it done [Music] all right guys now that we have the basket strainer in it's time to start running our drain i'm going to start with the tail piece on the basket strainer what's the tail piece it is this section right here in this kit you're going to have two pieces of pipe that have a flange on the top the shorter one goes on the basket strainer in the vertical position the longer one is for the disposal so grab the tail piece get the slip joint nut in this case we have a metal one that came with the basket strainer drop it in like that then the washer that came with the basket strainer see how it's kind of a t-shape it's going to sit in there like that and we're ready to go let's head under the sink and attach this tail piece to the basket straightener all right everything's finger tight right now we're going to get it all tightened after we get it all cut to fit and dial down so i'm going to grab the tee and this section we're going to mark those to length and cut them all right again i've put a slip joint nut and a washer on the tailpiece notice the orientation of the washer you can see that but they go in that direction i'm going to show you here on the p-trap how they go this is slightly beveled in here and the washer goes like that if you put it upside down it's not going to work it's not going to make a seal and you're going to have a leak so now i've got the washer on there i can thread the tail piece on and push it all the way up till it bottoms out there's a shoulder right here i'm just going to spin that on to hold it in place now you can obviously see that the inlet on our tee is lower much lower than the outlet on our disposal that's not gonna work is it so we have to cut the tailpiece and raise this tee up so i'm gonna have jordan hold this in place we're gonna put the torpedo level on it make sure we have some fall and then i'm going to get the tape measure and i'll measure from the bottom of the cabinet to the center of this pipe and then from the bottom of the cabinet to the center of the tee the difference in those two numbers is going to be how much we cut off of our tail piece you ready bud let's do it all right all right to the center of that 14 and a half okay into the center of that look at that 12 12. two and a half two and a half nice and easy nice and easy let's take it apart and go outside and cut two and a half inches off the tailpiece you know what but we might as well measure this one over here huh might as well i can just mark it yeah you see right there in the molding there's a little shoulder i can just eyeball that right there let's go outside and cut those cool man say anything i just cut it do you want to say anything nope that's just good do you feel better yes [Applause] all right now that we got them cut precisely on the saw let's put it all back together all right we have our tail piece on there with our washer and our slip joint nut we've got the washer and our compression plate on the disposal end a beveled washer and a slip joint nut there we're all ready to go together let me get about half a bubble of fall on it all right we've got these two screws in loose and this slip joint nut and this one loose also let's put our torpedo level on there we got about half a bubble of fall that's fine i think what i want to do now tighten these two screws tighten these two nuts and this one then we can run our p-trap let's do it all right we've got our p-trap on now we're going to take our wall tube and connect it to this part of the p-trap now no washer is required because as you can see it's already beveled right there that surface is made to mate up with the surface on inside the p-trap and form a seal so let me put this on here and we'll show you our next step we're almost there guys let's check it out no matter what i do with this p-trap this pipe and this pipe in the wall are not going to line up for two reasons one this one's too low but that's an easy fix right we can just cut our tee just like we cut the tail piece but now we've got to get them lined up this way so i have a 45 i'm going to glue it to there with a piece of pipe and we'll do something like that all right as you can see that's where i want to be now i've got about a quarter inch gap between this fitting and this one so i'm going to go outside on the saw and i'm going to cut a short piece of this pipe an inch and three quarter inches long that's going to be a three quarter inch inside of this fitting three quarter inch inside the fitting in the wall plus that quarter inch gap an inch and three quarter let's go outside cut that glue this up and we're almost there one more fitting dude all right we've got our 45 in there now we need a trap adapter to adapt the inch and a half tubular fitting to the inch and a half pvc fitting and actually have a trap adapter already glued on this piece of pipe this is from a temporary sink on another project i'm going to go outside cut it off three quarters of an inch and glue the trap adapter into the 45 shoulder to shoulder let's get it done you got to be very careful with purple primer in a finished room they make a clear primer i should get some just for that because i'm pretty messy huh all right we're ready dude let's glue this on you know what this pipe is made from eh yeah pvc hey but you know where it's made eh no where canada cool we love our canadian viewers all right cool man i think our last step is to cut this tee because we're a little a little low huh yep we could probably make it fit but what do you say half an inch all right and we got plenty of room for adjustment so let's cut it off three quarters of an inch okay got our slip joint nut and our washer on the tailpiece into our trap adapter get that lined up too there we go all right we're home free just tighten everything up we'll connect the ice maker and the dishwasher get this water on and give this thing a leak test now we got a few parts left over but that's okay it just depends on your situation we've got it all plumbed in we'll throw these in the supply box for next time but why don't we pull out the dishwasher in the refrigerator and drill some holes in these cabinets all right the dishwasher comes with this style of hose clamp but that plumbing kit we bought with all the p-traps in it came with this style i much prefer these style so we're going to put these in our plumbing supply box for next time and use these and then you see these lines that are molded into the rubber i put this clamp right in between them we'll get our 5 16 nut driver on our 10 and 1 climb right there tighten this up that should be fine one more all right that's it let's stand it back up i think we're ready to put it in there all right [Music] oh where's it coming from big leak on the drain it's just a drain cycle it looks like it's coming off that hose clamp yep it does all right let's pull it out all right let's take that off and redo it still leaking all right it's fixed all fixed up so originally we put this type of hose clamp on it because we thought it would be stronger well it would be stronger but sometimes stronger is not better what we found was that this hose clamp actually started to crush this piece of pipe right here this drain line so we took it apart reformed it made it a circle again which is pretty easy and put the manufacturer's recommended hose clamp on there and we're fine we could have taken this out of the video but we know a lot of you guys like us because we show you what's real i've actually never tried this kind of hose clamp on here i've always used the manufacturer one but i love these i think these are a lot stronger but in this case like i said stronger is not better and i think i said when i was tightening this down i said not too much right yeah but i went past the threshold but we're back in business let's put the dishwasher back in the opening hook it back up i think we're done all right all right all right gang we're all hooked up quick rundown of what we did we are gfci protected here on the disposal on the right and the dishwasher on the left i got a high loop here in the drain and jordan get a shot of it that's actually got a uh a tubing clamp a pipe clamp connected to the bottom of the subtop so we got that going on for us and we got all the wires and hoses tucked all the way in the back this nut right here that's what i'm calling the bonnet nut some people call it a packing nut let's see if i can tighten it oh yeah see that that should stop it check the hot side [Music] oh yeah yeah that was it yep all right let's get some paper towel all right that did it one last thing we want to do we might have some trash in the lines and we don't want to clog up these tiny holes in the faucet so we're going to unscrew it right here turn the faucet on and purge that line all righty gang that looks fantastic we got it all done and we did have that one little leak my mistake i'll own it but there are a lot of plumbing connections on there you got the hot and cold water plus the drain all the electrical to do it's a ton of work we hope that helped you out if you ever have to hook up a sink with a dishwasher and a refrigerator and if you like video be sure to smash that like button for us if the like button is kind of leaking use the right hose clamp on it don't do what i did leave us a comment ask a question and subscribe if you haven't already we would really appreciate that and we will see you on our next video [Music]
