put it out man what are we doing it's crazy hey gang i'm paula stefak welcome back to the channel and we have a banger for you today gang a couple of videos ago jordan and i moved the toilet about five inches and that toilet was in a concrete slab it wasn't the prettiest job but we got it done and that video got a lot of views and thanks for all the support gang we really appreciate it but with all the views also came a lot of comments comments like hey stutt pack you could lit that thing on fire what about a hub saver gang grab a heat gun you'd be done in five minutes well they must have skipped to the juicy part of the video because we're pretty sure at the beginning of the video when i was standing in front of that huge oak tree it had just gotten blown over by a category four storm that just barreled through louisiana you might have heard of it and as a result of that storm hundreds of thousands were without power we couldn't buy gas stores were closed we were under a curfew but despite all that we got the job done with the tools we had and listen gang if i bought the perfect tool for every situation every time well i'd probably have a brand new 2022 f-150 sitting in the driveway right behind jordan and a lot of you commented in that video that you felt like it was real world and that's exactly how we felt and we read every one of your comments and it got us thinking what is the perfect method for taking a piece of pipe out of a hub well let me introduce you to peter our pipe extraction test pig and in today's video we're going to be testing all your comments to see which pipe extraction method works best is it mechanical or is it elemental let's find out we built peter a few nights ago and we didn't spare any expense for you gang let me walk you through a little bit about how we built this we bought eight four inch pvc couplings and eight four inch abs couplings and in each one is cemented a short piece of pipe and that's going to be what we extract we drilled holes through the coupling and threaded a piece of rebar through them and embedded them in 320 pounds of concrete so there's no way they can move and we built this beautiful pink frame out of some pink two by fours why'd you get pink man oh man i was at the home depot and there were some guys at the other two by fours that i wanted going through them one by one by one and i just wanted to grab two so these were next door in the next bay so i just grabbed them and i was gone so before we start removing pieces of pipe from these couplings let's ask the question do we actually need to remove the pipe in our case we did because we needed the clearance but maybe in your case you don't and you just want to get from that piece of pipe that's been cut off flush with the shoulder back to pipe now here's one idea and this only works with four inch this is a three inch coupling and it has a piece of three inch pipe in it it just so happens that that three inch coupling fits very nicely inside that four inch pipe why does it only work with four inch the smaller sizes don't work that's just how it is only one yep yeah so some glue on there and you're good to go now i'm pretty sure that that is not allowed in the plumbing code so never ever ever glue a hub inside of a piece of pipe the second option is what's called a pipe extender i've never seen these in a store i just happen to find this online this is from pvc fittingsonline.com and like i said it's called a pipe extender this part is made to be glued inside a piece of four inch pipe and this part is the same as a four inch pipe i'm gonna push it down and look at that you're back to four inch pipe and you can get the job finished and these come in all sizes all the way down an inch and a half i think in pvc and abs cool so those are two options to get you back going without removing that piece of pipe and as much fun as it is talking about hubs and fittings and pipe i want to move on to the real meat and potatoes issue on this video and start removing some pipe all right good job we can i'll get the i'll get the methods oh hang on i can't get this freaking thing out of here all righty guys here's our arsenal now what we have on my saw stop here is going to cover 99 of your comments and your suggestions on how to get that piece of pipe out of the hub let's start right here we got a wagner heat gun bought that just for you guys that was probably the most popular comment we saw i think it was yup just use a heat gun yep and if you don't have a heat gun grab your wife's hair dryer this one's kind of beat up baby i think it's time for a new one but christmas coming up don't worry i got you covered somebody also mentioned a light bulb so believe it or not i was able to find an incandescent 100 watt light bulb look at that wow it lasts for the longevity of 0.9 years so if you put those in in january your lights will be out by christmas you are but they generate a lot of heat we're going to try it out but i don't have a lot of faith in that but it might surprise us and then on the mechanical method side we got this hole saw we're going to drill it out it's going to be self-centered on this block got a hub saver there thank you robert thank you rispoli plumbing this hole saw fits inside of orange pipe we're gonna heat it up and let the heat transfer from this to the pipe we're also gonna apply the flame directly to the pipe and we're gonna put some of this on the pipe and light it on fire all right all right first up gang is the hole saw we're going to try to cut this out with the hole saw just like that now remember this is four inch pipe it has an od an outside diameter of four and a half inches so i have a four and a half inch hole saw this method also works with three inch pipe because it has an od of three and a half it'll also work with two inch pipe because it has an od of two and three eighths also a commonly available hole saw now obviously we need something to guide this hole saw because if we just go like this it's going to skate all around so we just have a little block we made that fits perfectly inside the pipe with a pilot hole already in it we're going to start it off like that and drill out that piece of pipe let's talk about the drills a lot of you in the comments are always looking out for my well-being i appreciate it and i don't want to snap off my wrist with a little cordless drill right here so i brought up my big boy big right angle drill it's going to power through this four inch pvc and this abs with no problem you had a smaller pipe like two inch probably your cordless drill will work but that's what i'm gonna use today so let's chuck up this whole saw and get started [Music] i can already hold on to this guy [Music] you hear the clutch kicking in yeah yeah it's a lot of torque [Music] well that was faster than what we did it was but we didn't have the clearance in our hole for that drill right well that's not too bad no it's pretty scarred up but not as bad as i thought it was gonna be you take that over what you did to that pipe in the video what are you saying let's grab a piece of four inch pipe and see how well it fits in there all right so let's check out our fit got a piece of schedule 40 pvc pipe right here it fits really well better than i thought like i said but it's nice is it a little loose i guess if it was too loose for some plumbers you could use a heavy bodied pvc cement that is available or somebody commented you can make your own pvc paste out of the shavings from some pvc this is actually from when we drilled all the holes for the rebar so you put your shavings in a glass jar got to be glass or metal right and you put in some mek methyl ethyl ketone so i picked this up when i saw the word substitute i was like oh man but i put this in there and it did not dissolve these at all now maybe it's because this is a substitute i hate when they do that i bought some paint thinner about a month ago when i got home with it it was white i'd never seen white paint thinner before these companies that changed their formulas drives me nuts now somebody said acetone will work also but it did not affect these shavings at all now i want to go back to the methyl ethyl ketone the reason that works is because it is the first ingredient listed in your glues in your pvc cement and in your abs cement so you would think it would dissolve it but it did not in this case right so we're not going to make a paste but as far as mechanical methods go gang the hole saw really impressed me but you got to have the little block to guide it now this is the slug from that pvc we just cut out of there and it looks like it got hot enough right here where it deformed wow so maybe that's a good sign that the heat is actually gonna help us out we're gonna find out i'm gonna throw that in the trash we'll keep going now that we've got that piece removed let's try it on the abs and see if there's any difference [Music] i say it was about the same amount of pressure same amount of force the clutch did kick in more with the pvc than with the abs well let me grab a piece of four inch abs and let's test our fit there you go dude what the 50 worth of pipe just for our channel like i said we spare no expense abs isn't code where we live so i had to buy a 10 foot stick at lowe's why does it say brandon w who's that i guess he made it or he was a shift captain when they made this made in the usa baby all right i don't think this is going to fit we may have to dig out the saw all right let me cut a piece all right got something a little more manageable oh yeah that's nice that is nice abs cement would work fine on that right on now we'll have to say that this i can't even hold it this is much hotter cutting the abs than it was cutting the pvc in fact the directions say when you're using a hub saver on abs you have to cool it down or it'll get too hot all right so let's go on to our next mechanical method you asked for it we got it again thank you robert we got a hub saver and if you look this little plate right here that's taking the place of the block we made for the hole saw because this is going to fit inside the pipe and this part is going to cut it i've got a good feeling about this one man let's chuck it up in the drill and try it out now they hyped this thing up a lot they did so i've got super high expectations for this guy right here send it and so far 320 pound uh peter all right that doesn't sound right all right you're gonna put that in and so far our 320 pound test rig hasn't moved a bit all right you ready bud yup here we go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's hardening again you think that it's getting so hot that it's melting and then re-sealing the glue wow well not the glue just the plastics getting right linguine yep there we go all right all right that did it now my first reaction that was a lot more work than the hole saw but hard to tell another thing i'm noticing is all these little shavings on the side they come off but look how clean this one is with the hole saw yeah let me try this again that'll go that'll go with a few taps all right let's try the abs with the hub saver all right let's get our piece of 4-inch abs try it out yep we're in i can already tell though that this is tighter than the hole saw but with a little cement on there it'll go down to that shoulder i'm pretty confident in that okay now i will say tremendous amount of strain on the drill if this pipe wasn't secured i mean we basically have it cemented in this 320 pound test jig that was in a wooden subfloor and not attached that thing's going to be dancing all around i could see where you could spin off the pipe or break a fitting underneath you got to be careful with these big ones well if it's doing that to your drill then what's it going to do to a little cordless it'll strip you might need a right angle or something yeah snap it right out of your right yep okay well that concludes the mechanical methods and even though in this video we only did the hub saver and the hole saw in other videos we've done we've used a jigsaw a drill a chisel other things like that right so out of all of those methods what do you think mechanical the hole saw was cleaner and i i think we get a better fit but you know a four and a half inch hole saw is pricey yes these are not so much now it wouldn't be fair if i didn't say i actually ordered a third tool made by reed manufacturing i have some old reed plumbing tools i love them the one that reed makes the pipe extractor they make is a block of aluminum that's machined for in here it has a step in it and then it has a cutting tooth on it that removes this i would have loved to have seen how that worked i think that was going to be my favorite it's also the most expensive it was almost 90 online i ordered it almost two weeks ago it is stuck on a fedex truck somewhere it spent a week in houston on a truck and now it's stuck somewhere in baton rouge we would love to show it to you like we said guys but maybe they'll show up here in the next few minutes but i don't have my house don't count on it i think fedex is in shambles right now they are but that's enough of the mechanical means you want to light some of these on fire bud let's get some heat involved in the equation i'm ready the sun is setting so i can handle a little more heat all right we are ready to try some heat on these fittings and we're gonna start with the heat gun a couple of reasons for that number one we think it's probably the most controlled method we have a lot more control over this than a flame and then number two we want to see how hot does this need to be before it starts to come out and we're actually going to use an infrared thermometer for that and that's going to help us when we do the other methods so that we know when we're in our target range now this is a 750 1100 degree heat gun we're just going to crank it up to 1100 start on this one right here see what happens yep i see some discoloration down here at the bottom which means it may be hot enough to start to come out let's try it it's pretty soft isn't it maybe a little more a little bit more i think that glue is hanging on yeah all right the pliers went all the way through i think we're there i'm just going to start twisting them like a can of tuna all right or a can of spam there we go let's see if i can get it off the pliers come on nice wow look at that how hot we got it was right at 400 wasn't it it's cooled off quite a bit yeah and that's the back side right i think the front side was at 400 degrees and here we go that's hardly even warm and that's the cleanest so far it is and the lowest effort yep wow you want to try the abs now yeah all right something the other one yeah nope so i'm going to say that heat and the abs is not going to work so on the abs the pliers simply go through and then they come through the pipe like that i can never get them all the way through i'm starting to soften the hub right here so i'm just going to say that the heat on the abs is a no-go you got to use the hole saw or a hub saver interesting yeah yeah that means that we got all these set up for nothing then we'll play pong or something but now we know what our target temperature is 400 degrees so we're going to move on to our next test which is 100 watt incandescent light bulb sitting in the pipe just like that i kind of have my doubts on this one we're going to plug it in and let that light bulb start warming up this pipe while we move on and do our other test let's plug it in and there we go while that cooks let's bring our hair dryer over there and try that one [Music] i overheated it i guess i'll have to buy our new one we'll let it cool off but uh we weren't even at 200 degrees so and we need to get to 400 about yeah so i don't think that's the ticket so as far as the hairdryer is concerned like i said we're gonna let it cool off my wife did say this thing gets very hot and the temperature of the air not the actual hair dryer and she can't use it on her clients but maybe if you have a bigger one it might work but it's taken quite a while by the time you get that pipe heated up with a hair dryer you could just run to the store and get yourself a heat gun or a torch that's actually going to be our next method we're going to light this and warm the pipe with the torch i'm going to try not to light it on fire that's not my goal i just want to heat it up enough where i can peel it out with the needle nose ready bud yes so the next method to be clear is just direct flame to pvc all right [Music] are we there yet yep you're sitting in the upper 300s a little more all of the bubbling around that you know that happened on the heat gun so i think that's a good indication that you're ready i say you grab the pliers and try it out not quite not quite it's not quite as malleable all right all right way over 400 yeah and i'm black on the inside yep a little toasted marshmallow action that's right okay the pliers were through see it tore it right someone's just spin it off that way come on there we go oh come on oh man you almost had it does it start to get harder even you know after you release the heat i don't know i don't have any sense for that i think the heat gun was a much more even heat so it it heated evenly where this had its hot spots okay that makes sense yeah but that wasn't too bad it got it off of there all right all right now what are we going to do we're going to heat up that hole saw and put it in there i think so and let the heat from the hole saw transfer to the pipe right because your thinking is that the hole saw is going to evenly distribute that heat right so maybe it's going to be the most efficient way to distribute the heat without burning the pipe but i don't know right we'll try it all right is our light bulb going what's the temperature over there it's like 150 man and the surface of the light bulb is only about 180 so i'm pretty sure it's physically impossible for that to work all right yeah let me grab that whole saw and i'll start heating it up all right [Music] [Music] it wasn't that tight before it expanded it must all right let's see how hot this guy is right around 3 30 dad so we know that's not hot enough to get it out so you're probably gonna have to keep the torch on it all right so it's already given up some heat to the pipe and the reason we're doing this method is because a few people commented to like heat up a pipe and then stick the pipe inside this is the closest thing we had to a pipe but it's the same concept right then you don't get all that that's the idea yeah but if you're trashing that anyway then you know what's a marshmallow pipe right right right i mean it's possible that the the hole saw could get stuck or whatever right right you're dealing with a big hunk of metal that's hot right you don't have to do all that like you have trouble right yeah and this plastic now the plastic oozing through those holes it's going to harden oh and i'm not going to right well try and get your whole cell out of there all right yeah this plastic has expanded through those slots and now it's all one piece all right all right this turned into a hole saw recovery i just have an extra mandrel took the bit out screwing it from the inside now i have something i can grab on to with these vice grips let's see if i can pull it out time to king arthur this thing man man oh it's coming oh yeah not worth it i don't think so nope nope that's a fail all right gang we saved the best for last we're gonna put some regular clear pvc cement on the interior light on fire with the torch let it burn out take the temperature with our gun and see where we're at it's the most visually appealing you'll get a big wow factor on this one but is it the most effective we're about to find out if i can get this cap off hey hey it's like fondue yeah 360 480 569. wow how long does it stay on fire for i don't know did you get it it's just not there yet huh so that was probably surface temp i think the heat gun works because it has so much time to heat through to the outer hub interesting you wanna do it one more time and i think we can get it out okay it sure is fast though and i could just see all the methane comments right what was that movie was it christmas vacation yeah yep 652. let's try it it's the right sound it makes it it makes it like a squishy sound when it comes out here we go hey not as easy as the one with the heat gun but it is working yeah and this is probably a great method for a lot of guys because they got lighters on them yep a lighter yeah what are you gonna do with the lighter you what do you mean you stick it in there that'll never work why not it's not enough heat no i'm saying they light the glue like the glue okay yeah i was thinking all right i got you there we go all right it works i'm glad that worked i wanted that one to work looks like a little uh purple dessert all right dude let's clean up and regroup and kind of go over the results alrighty gang i was just telling jordan man i learned so much doing that and we hope that you did too watching this video that was really fun and it was very interesting for us so let me kind of walk you through all the methods we tried and what we think is the absolute best the hole saw worked great on the pvc and the abs left a nice smooth interior but on the pvc it did leave a section of the old pipe right here but that's fine you're gonna put the new one in you're gonna be fine on the pvc and the abs with our hub saver they both work fine also now the hub saver did leave kind of a rough surface but the pipe does go in there you can glue it and salvage your fitting the heat gun man that worked fantastic look at that pulled out in one piece no shavings and the absolute best interior out of all of them now heat does not work on the abs so if you have a piece of abs you got to get that piece of pipe out you're going to have to use the hub saver or hole saw the light bulb and the hair dryer simply couldn't get to our 400 degree level to soften that pipe soften that glue enough to get those out so thumbs down on those two over here on the other side this one was the torch worked great you do get some fumes this one was the hole saw that we heated up and put inside did not work at all that thing's still in there and this is the one where we lit it on fire it came out as well so take a look at these three there's the one from the heat gun all in one piece here's the one from the torch on the pipe did burn the pipe a little bit but that's fine it came out after it did break right there this one's probably the worst shape but in the end it came out too and it looked the coolest it did look cool so mechanical or elemental in our opinion for removing a piece of pipe from a piece of pvc the heat gun hands down is the winner you get a nice smooth interior it comes out in one piece there's no open flame and one thing we didn't talk about you don't have all these shavings that are going down inside your pipe probably need to put a rag in there anyway if you're working vertically but you don't have all the shavings to deal with and like we said earlier if your pipes not totally fastened very well like these are that heat gun is still going to work that pipe's got to be rigid if you're going to try to use a hole saw or a hub saver in our opinion and now i got a heat gun i've always wondered one of these the box says it has 101 uses and maybe now 102 uses is getting a piece of pipe out of a hub i wonder if when they make that they know that that is the best possible way to do this job they'll know now if they watch our video so go out and get a heat gun now you can fix that pvc pipe and once you fix that pipe now you bring your heat gun in the kitchen and flambe the crust on that creme brulee and have a little dessert after all your hard work so we hope you enjoyed the video take your heat gun flambe that like button for us we'd really appreciate that ask us a question drop a comment down below subscribe if you haven't already and we'll see you guys on our next video [Music] you
