hey guys matt allen here welcome back to tactical bassin today we're headed back sub surface we're going to do some underwater bass fishing and watch how fish interact and what causes them to strike different lures we're going to watch how they interact with swim baits with jigs with jerk baits and even an underwater perspective on how they interact with the top water let's go [Music] the other day tim did a great underwater video it was a handful of different worms rigged different ways with bass interacting with them and it had been a few months since we had done an underwater video that video just got my wheels turning just like i'm sure it got your wheels turning so i've been digging through underwater footage watching bass interactions with all sorts of different baits since that time and it really got me thinking because i talk about reaction so much right even in the winter time how to draw a reaction strike so i started watching clips and watching those reaction strikes and today i've got a bunch of footage for you to kick it off i want to look at how fish act when they're fired up so there's just a couple of clips here of bass that don't need to react these fish were already amped up this is a fish eating a whopper plopper this is a fish reacting to an s waiver that's doing nothing you talk about the drawing power of a swim bait there's just a swim bait in the water column and a huge bass just mauls it and then finally a small mouth just running down a jig when these fish are aggressive nothing will stop them now those three fish were fired up no way around it those are the fish that we hope to run into every time we're on the water if you guys have seen us throwing a whopper plopper if you've never thrown a whopper plopper you just watched a fired up seven pounder hunt a whopper popper if that doesn't get you pumped in the middle of winter time what will now we talk all the time about the power of glide baits the power of swim baits because of their size that they have drawing power that right there is a shining example there's a swim bait sinking in the water column with treble hooks hanging from it but it's such a big meal that that five or six pounder couldn't turn it down had to eat it it's amazing what drawing power does and then that small mouth i mean that was just that was just the small mouth right when they're angry they are angry just charging down that jig now let's switch gears because those are the fish we hope to run into but that's not always the case a lot of times it takes that reaction to trigger a feed response so here we're switching gears we're going to watch some jig footage then we'll watch some top water because it's fun then a little bit of glide bait and then we'll end with a jerk bait let's jump into it now this guy right here i remember this footage like it was yesterday this is a five pounder and this fish was just being lazy just sitting around until a jig got this fish to trigger it was all about hopping the jig you see how fast he did that sucked that jig in blew it back out watch the slow motion of this again it's all about hopping with this fish it's triggering that feed response you've got his attention but he lets it go until it hops [Laughter] boy he thought that thing was real he figured out it wasn't you ever seen a fish completely spit a bait out like that now this guy here this is a big fish this fish is probably high fives and he's skinny this fish could have been six or seven pounds so if you saw that there he just kind of came up to that jig and just grabbed it by the tails he wasn't very into it not that interested enough to kind of sample it going by but that was it but same thing switch gears hop that jig different different reaction altogether completely vacuums it up on the hop this is why we're always talking about working those jigs aggressively now it doesn't just apply to jigs this is a rover this is a top water bait man that happened quick it's a walking top water and something about walking the top water those fish just come unglued a perfect head shot on that bait and then he came off oh it's brutal this is a different clip this is a different fish same reaction though by the way we'll link all these baits down in the video description everything you're seeing because obviously you can't tell what they are in this but we'll link the exact base for you the colors and everything same thing though perfect head shot neither one of those fish ate the back of that bait they hit it right in the head now this is a whopper plopper these fish are together to school man that schooling mentality that's when those reactions just get crazy these fish play off of each other when one gets interested see that head turn the other one says no you're not taking that from me and he's on it now this next clip i put this one in here just because this is my favorite clip of all time this is pure bass aggression what's coming up is a popper okay and when this fish eats this popper a larger fish just ambushes him that bigger fish is not trying to get the bait he's not trying to eat it's a pure headbutt watch this in slow-mo he just took that smaller fish and threw it into the air because it beat him to the meal here it comes did you see that just launched him out of the water bass are vicious critters now here we go this is the s waiver totally switching gears talking glide baits now we talk about the drawing power and we talk about how we twitch these baits to get a reaction now the twitches are a little funny here because we're fishing tight quarters to that camera so it's not as natural as it would be out away from the camera but even so these fish are on it now some of these clips you've seen before some of them are brand new this is one you've seen before if you remember our older underwater footage you'll recognize this fish interacting with this bait that right there that's why we talk and talk and talk about changing hooks upgrading hardware and then that happens the first fish doesn't even hook up on a t-bone this one headshots this glide bait and gets himself hooked because those hooks are sharp watch this he ends up with both hooks that's the difference when you upgrade your hardware have sharp hooks have the right hooks huge difference now here we switch gears to jerk baits some of my favorite footage of all time is watching these fish just massacre the jerkbait right on the twitch twitch and he loses it same thing twitch twitch pause let that bait hang there twitch again it's brutal they just cannot resist that again it's drawing that feed response it's triggering a reaction look at him coming up slow twitch and it's over you can do this with jerkbaits you can do it with crankbaits you can do it with a-rings glide baits did you see that it happened fast there was a final twitch in there when that fish just all out committed watch it right before the strike that's a jackal rerange i recognize that in a heartbeat he's coming and then watch that final twitch brutal man it's fun to watch this stuff well what did you guys think were there some takeaways in there for you is there anything you can apply to your fishing um i am fascinated by how those fish will just turn on you know they're sitting there they're doing almost nothing and then you see them engage and then it's full throttle and so many times they're coming they've already decided that they're really interested but it's that last twitch of the jerk bait it's that last turn of a top water it's that last hop of the jig where those fish just say it's go time and they smash that thing their aggression when they fire off when they are going to eat is just unbelievable i mean think back on that that fish hitting the other fish from below he wasn't after that bait that bait was already eaten and gone he was aiming with his mouth closed no attempt to eat just pure aggression straight into the belly of the bass that beat him to the meal when these fish are fired up they are fired up and you want to take that and apply it to your fishing you can slow drag a jig all day long and you will catch fish you can steady crank a crank bait and you will catch fish you can slow roll glide baits top waters but if you stop you think about it and you start adding changes into your cadence you start twitching and stopping that topwater you start popping that jig you start twitching a glide bait when those fish come for that thing when it's time to eat it's no longer uh oh maybe i'll eat that it is an all-out massacre on your bait and those are the strikes i am looking for i want those fish that are committed that just smash that bait and it doesn't matter when you're triggering that feed response it does not matter if that water is 85 degrees or 45 degrees those fish will explode on that lure those are the bites that i'm always looking for because that's that bone jarring eat that's that fish that doesn't miss right when they hit that thing they mean business and that's what i'm out there hoping to catch trying to get one of those great big bass to trip up and attack so here we are still in the middle of winter watching topwater clips but i wanted you guys to be inspired i got all pumped up from tim's video started watching that footage again hopefully you guys did too but remember the next time you're on the water how different those fish's interactions are when that bait's aggressive when it's moving and when they just turn and ambush it try to apply that to your fishing and i think the end of winter going into spring will be a lot more fun for you if you enjoyed the video hit the like button subscribe to the channel and we'll talk to you soon [Music] you
