[Music] hi everyone it's a beautiful day down on the river it's about 9:30 and the tides on the way out and I've come down to see what I can find it's been a bit stormy recently so maybe this is going to have sort of disturbed the bottom of the Thames and we're going to find some interesting things to look at later so let's go see what we can find and then we'll do a roundup at the end now just down here there's a clay pipe stem but I can see that there's some lettering on it it's going give it a little rinse so on that side it says Plumstead and this is likely to be a local pipe maker and I've got to admit I can't see what it says so I'm gonna put that in my bag and take him look when I get home [Music] I've just looked down and seen this which is quite curious it looks like some kind of cat chore perhaps sir it's all the button type thing I've not seen one like that before and do you have any ideas here comes my friends hiya now look closely and see if you can see it's not particularly obvious if I get it right down nice it's just there in the middle can you see just here stem we're gonna find out you can just see the milling around the edge here of the pipe just there so let's see what lies beneath ah and we are gonna get a bit of stem look yeah great and I think yes there is a maker on there which is always good news so let's go and give it a rinse and have a look and see who it is in fact it says plumb stood I think which is just like the stem which I just found ok I'm gonna take it down to the water's edge and give it a rinse ok here we are crystal-clear waters of the terms let's give this a rinse off I wonder if there's a RJ what this is good news there's actually a design on it and weirdly oh my goodness look it's another cricket quite like the one I found the other day isn't that strange ok so there's a cricketer there uh and it's by locket w lock it now I know somebody knows all about locket my mum did a lot of research on mr. locket w I think yet William look it there's the cricketer and there's the wicket in the bat sticker that I've just found another one of these tags here looks like this one's got 45 on it I think it's slightly different it's got something else on the top that's nice [Music] okay well it's turned into pipe bonanza time and I have just seen the most beautiful clay pipe bulb again it's a little piece of art now look at this look at that it looks like a variation on the claw design and there's a little claw curling up there touching the bowl oh that is absolutely stunning stunning stunning on a minute no I've got it I've got it completely wrong oh my goodness did you see this before I did he's not a claw it's a lady her skirt and there's her head and she's bending down oh my gosh just when you think that they can't get any more inventive so there she is from behind she's bending down their central bun there's her skirt and she's looking down and there she is oh I am just utterly made up with this this has just got to be one of the best pike bowls I've ever seen oh my goodness that is find of the day and I'm absolutely I'm speechless look at it it's beautiful so there she is I thought it was a I wonder how many of you noticed before I did that is just something else that's what I call magical just magical that really is a pipe dream [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] okay I've just seen something here which is nicely camouflaged into the mud around it in fact what I first spotted was this bit of wire but then my eyes were drawn to this buckle very very delicate look rather lethal looking he wouldn't want to step a lot in the middle of the night Mooji or anytime actually part of a buckle very very delicate look this clay pipe has been river so long it's actually got barnacles on it I've just seen something else over here something nice and round and I have found quite a few of these so you'll probably recognize it now I did find out what that IR e s stands for but my memories not what it was so I'll have to look it up again when I get back refer to my own video but that's nice isn't it come to have a look and see what this is I've seen gleaming in the distance who I say what it's real special isn't it pretty modern wonder if someone's lost their keys I think this might be a piece of ammunition here now I'm spent as well which is good I'll pop it in my bag and we'll have a closer look when I get back but it looks like it looks like a used bit of ammunition there's some spent ammunition there's a pipe stem here as well but it's nothing but a stem now a minute ago at the low-tide mark palace very pointy piece of wood at the end of a pole or something it's just hit so I stuck it in the mud to pick up on the way back I'm going to take it home with me and give it a little wash up and see if I can work out what it is with your help I just spent down to have a look at this coke bottle here I don't think it's particularly old but there is a nice pipe bowl here and it's in the accordance style designed to look like an acorn yeah it's really pretty look I can also see over there amongst that group of rocks I can I can see a pipestem inand from here I can see that it's a nice decorative one I don't know if it's going to be a bowl but there's definitely a lovely stem can you see it look just down there so I think it's probably just a stem but let's go and have a look get my trowel it's such a good good job that I've got this trowel on a string or else I'd be leaving it behind right here we are let's have a look yeah that's a really nice decorative pipe stem there I wonder if we can make out anything on it great if there's a name I think there is I'm going to put it in my pocket there we are what does it say it's got wool egde it's gonna be the maker so we'll have a look when I get home well I'm gonna head home now it's raining it was nice when I came down here but the rains come in now I've been extraordinarily lucky with these pipes I mean I've I've been extraordinarily lucky with pipes in general since I started mud Larkin but I think I have to say that this bowl here is my absolute favorite it just has to be it's certainly up there with my favorites I haven't had a huge amount of varied fines today but finding these pipes and particularly this pipe bowl has made me want to get all my pipe bowls out and so I thought the second half of this video I'm going to go through some of my favourite pipe bowls and have a look at the wide variety of fascinating little works of art that these pipe makers from the past have made so I'm gonna go home before I get too wet clean up this beautiful pipe bowl and get all my other pipe balls out and let's have a look to see some of these bowls which I've collected during my mud Larkin career [Music] hi everyone I hope wherever you are in the world watching this video you're keeping well and staying healthy in keeping occupied the footage in this video was made in February before the lockdown and of course there's no mud lurking whatsoever going along the River Thames at the moment we're all on lockdown and we need to beat this virus so I've been having quite a lot of fun looking back on old footage I have absolutely plenty going back months if not years enough to make lots of videos to keep us going through this lockdown at time so we will still be able to experience some pretty cool mud Larkin has see some really interesting things that the river has thrown up so here I am in my studio you might be able to see just behind me here some of my clay pipes that's the first thing we're going to do have a look at some of my favorite pipe bowls and then we're going to have a look at a few other things related to some of the objects which featured in today's video we'll have a quick look at some of the other objects I found but you might be in to help me with some research on those so without further ado let's go and have a look at some of my favorite pipe bowls this time on lockdown has given me a great opportunity to go through some of my clay pipes and I must admit it's absolutely wonderful finding them for a second or third time okay so here are the objects which I found in February's outing along the River Thames I'm going to start off with the clay pipes which I found so let's pick them up and go over and have a look over here where I've started to arrange some of my pipes this has got to be the most tidy that they've ever been I had thought about going through all of them but I realized we'd be here for about a week if we did that so what I'm going to do is give you a quick little glimpse of these before heading over here where I've got some of the more ornate bowls and many of them late 19th century and there are some beautiful ones and I thought well even if I go through all of my favorite ones we're still going to be here for a very long time so I'm just gonna choose about five the first of all let's have a look at the ones I found today starting with this glorious pipe it's going to be mid to late 19th century but I first of all thought that it was a Kohler pipe and you can probably see why because if you have a look these other way if you have a look for example at this one it's got that claw reaching up clutching the egg and it's not dissimilar to what that looked like there initially when I first saw it until it dawned on me there was a little little lady here and as it happens some of these claw pipes are my favorite and I do have a little collection as you can see here these are some of my clawed pipes are evil claws clutching an egg I think this one here has got to be my most ornate and again these are late 19th century so this of course is not an Eagle Claw pipe it is the little lady with her skirt bending over I keep having to look at it because I just think it's so wonderful so absolutely wonderful and I'm just so glad that I found it so yes let's move back on to some of my favorite pike balls well of course there is this Pike Bowl here which probably some of you will recognize which I love made by Louis phione a French pipemakers a lady sitting on a commode you've got to give it to the pipe makers they did come out with some extremely imaginative ideas there's that we'll know what else have we got here what do I love I do like this one it's like a military pipe again I wasn't short it was when I first found it but what it is is a a military cap and it's got a gun on the top one of my absolute all-time favorite pike bowls and it's actually broken is this one here it's a dog and it's so detailed if you look at it closely you can see all the little hairs the eyeballs the nostrils it really is quite stunning and it would have been something like that so it's missing sort of half the bowl but it's still absolutely exquisite so that's a firm favorite again on the animal theme this is also one of my favorite pipe bowls and it has their up the bottom a horse's head as a spur or a heel and you can even see you know the detail mane absolutely stunning cut the outside and this strictly speaking isn't a pipe bowl it's actually a pipe stem and again it features a horse and this is another of my all-time favorites just look at that horse galloping for eternity along a pipe stone that most amazed look back legs don't look too comfortable this Pike was also a recent find and I love this it's so detailed this is also a Louis feel a French pipe and I mean there's just so many here that I absolutely love and I think hopefully over the coming weeks I will go through some more of them oh I must have forget these Turks head pipes here I love these with their little faces they're all such little characters and then over here we've got a collection with anchors and galleons on the other side so there'll be the anchor on this side and on this side the ship in full sail all of these are pretty much similar you can see that the ship on that one there this one's nice and defined a real naval themed anchor and ship these are also some of my favorites these sports themed Pike balls but this one here with the foot kicking a ball again so very detailed so imaginative I actually have a stem here with the ball missing but again it's such a beautiful little boot kicking the ball so we'll have a closer look at some more of these perhaps over the coming weeks so that's my lady pipe anyway currently my favorite but that could change but really I have to say that at the moment it's my favorite now during that outing I also found an acorn pipe and a called pipe ball now where did I put it oh here it is yeah the Acorn pipe Bowl it's a relatively common design actually and I do have some others here ooh these are also acorn designs this is my most complete one really ornate this one here which is a little bit discolored and then the other pipe I found was made by William Luckett a nineteenth-century pipe maker here with the cricketer on that side and the wickets stops at his name and I do have another one pretty much identical which I found back in December I think it was and it's just here exactly the same so I wonder if it's the same person who smoked this pipe and I do have a few other cricket themed ones I've got a nice bowl here I found that one day about to see and this one is also very nice and it has a figure of a man here and now I'm going to give myself away here with my slight ignorant but I think it's is it Gracie Fields on the cricket so it could well be him so those are today's pipe Bowl and pipe fights and I also found some nice stems and if you do have any time or inclination and you want to do a little bit of research on the makers then please please be my guest I'd love to know anything that you find out so now let's move on to something else what do we have here ok let's have a look I've got this this looks very much like something that would have been on the front of a military jacket correct me if I'm wrong but if you do know then I'd love to hear from you but it does look like something that would have been on a military naval jacket perhaps here is my spent ammunition it's certainly seen better days just about make out a little bit of the writing here that's got 39 on there what else have we got we've got this buckle and we've got this brother Audie skull it's really curious because shortly before the lockdown I went through a little spate of finding quite a few skulls let's go over here and have a look at some of them you probably are going to remember this one which is a ring I found when I was out with the ladies who Locke and this plastic skull I found up on the Thames for sure a few weeks ago as well and I also found a very large plastic skull when I was out for a walk on the Thames Estuary a few weeks ago before the lockdown now we've also got these tags here which I found like I said I found a few of these this one is marked or stamped with IR es which I believe stands for inspector of royal engineer stores some of these were used as tool tags and this one here obviously belonged to the company or kunis limited of Willa Chand thanks to Tony who used to live in one äj-- years ago he hasn't let me know that William R Kunis was a barge owner a rather like this one has got a nice bit of detail and it gives us the possibility of finding out a little bit about the company because we have the name on it I do have some other tags sitting here in this little pot in one of my drawers I really must get home together Fox for buckles I'm sure if I reach it around long enough I'd find one similar to see this part of buckle which probably comes from the late 19th or mid to late 19th century I should think oh good I'm looking forward to slicing through this here I've got a nice selection of butter sort of things gonna be fun going through order this box here I've got some bags and in them are pipes which have evidence of tobacco and ash in them I've kept them separately in bags just in case one day somebody comes along and says that they will analyze them to see whether tobacco came from several other drawers here full of things which I'm doubtless going to get the opportunity to sort out so that's something to look forward to more pipes here in these boxes that I need to sort through that's nice one back over here and the only thing left I think now is this rather nice pointy piece of wood it's got the nice detail here and I'm thinking it's probably the top of a mast what do you think well I hope you enjoyed that little visit to my plank collection and if you have any information about any of the other signs then please do comment below or get in touch and let me know I'm always thrilled
